One word: SCONES.
Coconut Lime and apple cheddar.
Put in mouth, chew, swallow, die and go to heaven.
That is all. -
Review from Wendy Y.
When I was here last time I was 10 minutes too late as they now close at 4:30pm instead of the usual 5:00pm. So today I seized the golden opportunity on my unintentional walk in down town to check this place out.
I walked in, and was surprised to find how small this place is. Claustrophobics, you are not going to like it here. The baked goods and food items were limited. I saw some scones, croissants, one square of carrot cake, and some sandwiches. That's it. They do sell beverages.
I paid my $2.75 (before tax) vanilla bean and pear scone and left. Service was friendly. The girl who helped me out was cheery on this snowy March day.
This is a good scone. Appearance wise, it looks dry. The whole treat has tiny black "dots" all over. I am glad to find the grounded vanilla bean was mixed very evenly in the batter. Taste wise I like the dry crunchy crust. The cubed pears further add texture to this alredy-complex delight. The scone is soft on the inside. To my second surprise, the scone was not doughy or floury (but a little on the dense side). I've never had so much texture in one single scone - it's like lighting a small fire cracker. I like how it's not too sweet. This scone is definitely unique.
I personally like the scone from next door better (Tree Organic Coffee). -

I've taken from yelp for a year, and now it is time to give back with my first review!
Crème de la Crumb is set up for take-out in that there is no indoor seating and outdoor seating is limited to two or three tables.
Baked goods-wise, I've had their cheddar and apple scone. Real cheddar! Real apple! Made on-site! Delicious! And once (only once!) I was sinful and ordered fresh baked cinnamon rolls. Holy. Mother. (Actually, I ordered three and when I got back to the office the folks I share space with were not around, so I ate them all. Don't tell.)
I try to avoid too many yummy baked goods (haha), so I often eat their salad (not made onsite). The Arugula, watermelon, pecan, cheese with a tangy (balsamic?) dressing is filling and very tasty. Highly recommend. The lox and cream cheese bagel is just ok.
Their lattes are almost as good as Artigianno, but mostly I drink their green tea (they serve Two Leaves and a Bud)--a very nice cup of tea.
The same two friendly faces greet me each day, and offer efficient service. I look forward to trying their catering menu for a work event! -

I'm updating my review to give it the same rating.
I expected an improvement over the month since it opened. Expecting the coffee to eventually come into its own after the growing pains had waned. I don't see much improvement. The pastries are still crazy good on occasion, but the coffee - still a long way away.
On a positive note, try the cherry and dark chocolate scone. What is this amazingly decadent thing I'm eating as I turn into Cosby eating it?Listed in: Vancouver Americanos, Yelp's 30-day Challenge

Oh pear and vanilla bean scone, I will follow you to the ends of the earth. My husband will follow your apple-cheddar counterpart, but what does he know? The oh-so-gooey vanilla bean cinnamon roll is also a clear winner, but I wasn't really a fan of the mango coconut scone (who would've thought right? cuz that combo sounds like a clear winner! le sigh), and the chocolate cardamom pear cake.
But regardless, I've already been back twice this month (mostly thanks to the fact that this location is very transit friendly), and look forward to more summer days where I'm wandering downtown holding my beloved pear and vanilla bean scone. swoon!Listed in: 2011 Best Of

Stopped by this cute tiny shop to try their lavender latte. It was quite perfect-smooth, hot, and just the right hint of lavender.
Didn't get to pick up a scone, but the flavours were unique, and I'd love to come back to try some of their scones! Vanilla bean and pear, lime and coconut, cranberry and white chocolate. Will be back!! -

Good things come in small packages! In the space the size of a walk-in closet, some of the best scones and cinnamon rolls I have ever eaten are crafted. As soon as you walk in the mouth-watering smell will render you speechless and you will regain speech only momentarily because once you've tasted one of their scrumptious treats you will likely be reduced to making the noise "mmmmm" for a few hours thereafter.
We ate here an astonishing three times on this trip as we became slightly addicted after the first visit. The fresh out of the oven cinnamon roll was heavenly, sticky and wonderful. My lox bagel and cream cheese was equally delicious. And the scones..... Oh my. I'm gonna have to figure out a way they can ship them to me here in Portland. The cheddar apple scone is the stuff that dreams are made of. Fluffy and flavorful. We had a moment of weakness and near tearfulness at the thought of leaving without eating just one more of them, so we went back after already being there once that morning and got one more for the plane before we left.
Thanks Creme de la Crumb, I haven't been able to concentrate all day at work today because I've been without your delicious treats..... -

Although I partly blame owner Lydia for my recent weight gain, I can't get enough of her drop-dead delicious Crème de la Crumb treats!
Lydia runs this petite bakery, located in a tiny storefront at 466 Granville Street, with hubby Ryan. The couple opened the business, which includes a separate commercial kitchen for events catering, in December 2009, hocking gooey vanilla-bean cinnamon buns, sunny lemon poppy seed loaf and, when in season, pineapple and dark chocolate scones.
Lydia and staff bake fresh each morning, from scratch and in small batches, using local ingredients without any preservatives and absolutely nothing artificial - just like mom used to make, but with variety, so people won't get bored.
Lydia tells me she is about to expand to a second location - likely before year's end. -

Scone baby, scone.
As I swallowed the last of the crumbs that I collected from the bottom of the paper bag and stored under my fingernail, I started to shake.
I needed more.
I took a cautious sip of my cappuccino as I tried to conjure a justifiable excuse for what was about to happen next. Nothing.
See, it's been months since I've tasted even a kiss of such a tender, wholesome scone-- or woman, for that matter. They're all too often flaky, dry, and overdressed with powders and the like. And I just felt it was about time I got my just desserts-- breakfast, rather.
In short, like my cappuccino, my pear and vanilla scone was exceptionally handcrafted. But my sights were now set on the pan that was emerging from the oven. To crown it all off, I ordered one of their acclaimed cinnamon buns.
To go.
Because I'd rather perform the coup de grâce on my heart somewhere where my fall from grace could not be witnessed knowingly. Somewhere where they'd all think it was just an accident. Somewhere near a hospital.
And there it was, gone. But the chaste, hearty flavour and warmth lingered long enough to mask the fleeting guilt and minor heart palpitations.
My heart races like it did that day whenever I think about what to have next. And then what to have after that.
Yours,
Murdoch -

YUM!!
The best scones I've had anywhere, anytime. Warning!! They are addictive :) Be sure you know where their second location is BEFORE you become addicted and show up on a Saturday morning expectant only to be plunged into desolation and disappointment.(based on a true story)
I haven't wandered from the Vanilla bean pear and the apple cheddar scones and their mochas - but I'm sure everything must be just as fabulous. -

I kept passing by this boutique coffee shop with the intention of going in, but never got to for whatever reason. I finally tried it today!
It's awesome that the creative chef, Lydia, freshly bakes everything from scratch, and she does creative pastries including waffles, carrot cake, cinnamon buns, and scones! Yum!
Tons of unique sandwiches, but didn't feel like having any of that today. Instead, I had a Cobb Salad, with creamy dressing, egg, chicken, bacon, blue cheese, and red onion. I don't think I've ever bought a salad that wasn't in a restaurant, but this one appealed to me. Mmm...loved the mix of flavours.
Looking forward to going there tomorrow for their grand opening! Hopefully I'll feel like trying their pastries - they looked good!
Edit:
So I did go back, and tried the Carrot Cake (with pineapple and coconut, topped off with vanilla bean cream cheese frosting). Soooo delicious. The frosting was a nice alternative to the too sweet ones from other places.
I also had the Oven-Roasted Turkey Breast sandwich with havarti, gig marmalade, and mixed greens. The bread was a nice touch with cranberries and walnuts (I think) in it. Mmmm! -

Every time I walk in this small bake shop, it smells delicious. There is always something in the oven, and something fresh out of the oven so if you are like me and *love* fresh baked goods, you must try Creme de la Crumb!
The turkey & havarti sandwich is yummy, with cranberry/nut bread giving it a delicious touch. I love all the scones, and often get whichever is fresh out of the oven. Notables include cheese & apple and dark chocolate & pineapple. They also have cookies, salads, coffee and other small treats, all made in house and fresh on the day!Listed in: Baked goodness

I won't go in here because I hate the unreadable sign. Sorry, it's just the way I am. If I am annoyed before I even walk in the door, it's all over.

Just what I needed this morning. Super cute. Tiny. Three tables outside. I got a breakfast bagel, sticky bun, double espresso and (!) an americano. They were really nice, fast, and it was the perfect way to start my day.

Oh, yum! I wandered there with kids this morning after reading reviews here, and the pastries we bought were very, very nice. They were also nicely priced. We had coffee at neighbor Trees Organic, and the kids also got very ordinary slices of lemon bread. For the same price, one gets something fantastic at Crème de la Crumb!
I hesitated between 5 and 4 stars because there were not many choices when we strolled by and it was before 9 a.m. But the pastries are what we are rating. -

Amazing fresh sandwiches with quality ingredients and fresh baked breads and sweets. Where some places have dry, hard to eat breads, these are soft, tasty and guarantee no leftover crumbs. Both their turkey & salmon sandwiches are highly recommended as is their moist, sweet (but not overly so) chocolate brownies. SOOO good!!

In this tiny coffee/bakery shop tucked away on Granville street which is unfortunately too easy to not notice, you will find - hands down - the best frosted cinnamon bun in the lower mainland! Moist, rich, sweet and delicious. Wow! Make sure you have it served warm. Then, step outside in the cold weather, sit on one of their small patio chairs, and enjoy your little bit of warm heaven on earth as you watch humanity walk on by. A Vancouver delight. Don't be intimidated by the small size and hefty price ($3.25). This is a treat in every way, and well worth it.

I've been to Crème de la Crumb a few times and came in with very high hopes with all the 5 star reviews. Perhaps my expectations got in the way of ability to fully enjoy the experience. I do have to say that the apple and cheddar scone was 5 stars worthy. The coconut-lime scone, not so much. I found it to be dry and heavy, more the consistency of bread than of a scone. Perhaps it was just an off day for this particular scone? I've had a few of the sandwiches (the salmon and the mozzarella/tomato) and thought they were pretty average. They do grill them for you which is a nice touch.
