I found this Marriot to be clean, very well decorated and I felt like it was a great bargain for the price I paid. My family was staying at the other Marriott down the road on Qualcomm Ave, but I found a better deal at the Courtyard. I figured I would be in a slightly crappier room but save some money. After hanging out at the Marriott on Qualcomm Ave then coming to my room, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Courtyard far surpassed the other "better" Marriott. The Courtyard is a brand new hotel, so everything is really nice and new. I was particularly impressed by the lobby, which look more like a trendy lounge than a hotel lobby.

Full recommendation for Courtyard Marriott in Mission Valley!!

Over 20 day Business stay here:
-Worst Internet Ever:  Just like Dialup days; consistently slow and jenky wifi made business travel extremely difficult and frustrating.
-Thin Walls, Eager-to-Clean-at-8am staff bangs on doors and opens any door without a Don't Disturb sign, even if it's fallen on the floor, which it will do.
    -Exercise room = 1 star
    -Pool/Hot Tub = 3 stars
-Room & room decor = 3.5/4 stars:  pleasantly pottery-barnish & not-garrish.  Crappy coffee-maker creates only a tiny dixie cup of joe; however free good coffee in lobby, so paddle on down in your jammies and fill up, but only until 10am, when the free coffee disappears.
-Convenient store is not convenient and only has candy bars and soda - no handy items like batteries.
-Awesome free lotion at the front desk.
-Ridiculous paper-parking pass:  I lost mine countless times, it got wet, shredded and everytime I needed to get out of the parking lot, I had to get a new pass, wasting time and resources:  Entrances have gate with bar and charge outlandish prices for overnight parking, unless you are validated.
-Staff is mixed:  some are great and helpful, some are the rudest, crankiest un-customer-service-oriented co-eds ever.
    -Good location, near Hillcrest.
-Great baked goods at the bistro:  get the $2.50 Coffeecake - outstanding and good deal.
-Sexy lobby area, with sleek sitting nooks.
I would give this place 3 stars, but the horrible internet connection drops it down.

We stayed here earlier this year for Valentine's Day weekend, and if I wrote a review then it would have been 4 stars easy. But, this past weekend my experience was unfortunately just not the same.

Our room was hot when we first got inside, and it didn't get much cooler the rest of our stay either. The mini fridge was also warm. I prefer that the room be ready by having the thermostat be set to a more comfortable temperature and having the mini fridge switched on and ready for the guest prior to them checking in. So, we set the thermostat to a cooler temperature and unpacked all of our things to settle in for the weekend. The room never got cooler. We called for someone to come up and fix the situation, and they unlocked the controls on the actual a/c heating unit and told us to control it from there and left. Still, the room stayed unpleasantly warm, making it a rather uncomfortable stay. The hallway was much cooler than our room.

I went to make coffee the next morning in one of those single serving coffee machines that I have used at several other hotels. I set it all up and when I came back to get my cup of coffee I found the cup about 1/4 full and the rest of the hot coffee was in a pool around the bottom of the coffee machine. Since I've used these machines previously, and they aren't exactly rocket science to use, I can't blame this on user error.

I really like the location of this hotel, and the first experience I had here. Dear Marriott, please make sure everything works in your rooms before your guests check in. Thank you.

This hotel is a great bargain!  I'm not sure why all the bad reviews?  The hotel is decorated nicely, it's very clean, they have grab and go food 24/7, nice rooms, and FREE WIFI!  The location isn't super convenient to touring San Diego unless you have a car.  I can't think of anything bad to say about this hotel.  For the price you can't beat it and this is coming from a hotel snob.

    OVERALL RATING  = 9 / 10

    The LOCATION = 9
The hotel is right off the 8 FWY between the 5 FWY and the 163 HWY. You would be able to get to downtown SD, SeaWorld, or SD Zoo within a 10-15 min drive (no traffic). It was nice to stay so close by to downtown without all that "downtown" fuss.
Also located directly across the 8 FWY is Fashion Valley Mall.

    The ROOM = 8
View =  7  (overlooking the 8 fwy. not much noise though)
       Bed/Bedding =  7
       Bathroom =  8
WiFI =  10  (free and had no connections issues)
TV =  9  (LCD flatscreen w/HD channels and free HBO)

    The PARKING = 8
Lot situated directly in front of the hotel and easily accessible.
    Gate access only.
$16/night with in-out priviledges (only for staying guests). I thought this was kinda steep, that is, until I saw what the hotels in other areas were charging for.
Lot was on the smaller side, but I didn't have any issues finding an open space.

    The ATMOSPHERE = 7
    Clean and seems renovated.

    The SERVICE = 7

    The APPEAL = 9
Paid $126 total for one night stay. As long as the rates don't change, this hotel will be my first option for all SD visits.

While this hotel appears to have been renovated within the last couple of years - pretty bathrooms and lobby -  the carpet in our room was filthy on both (separate) stays! I have never seen this in any other Marriott property. Dozens - no, hundreds - of stains throughout. Phone and Internet reception was poor. Woman at front desk apologized and said it was due to hill behind the hotel, and suggested I go to the back parking lot for the best reception. I had multiple calls to make, and calls to wait for, and was not going to spend the morning in the parking lot. When checking in, I asked, "Can you see there that we requested a room near the elevator?" and the woman checking us in responded impersonally, "We will do our best to meet your requests." How about looking at your computer screen and responding "Yes", or "No", with eye contact? Then...surprise...$16 per car to park (we had 2). I should have read the reservation details more carefully, but this is not typical of Courtyards. And lastly, when leaving, the self-service parking lot gate wouldn't open when either of us inserted our parking passes as instructed by the front desk. Wake up management! You've got problems here!

OK.  I qualify this entry with the following:  I travel a LOT.  I am a major frequent flyer with almost a million miles flown and months of nights in hotels spent per year.
I say BEWARE to this hotel and all Marriott chains.  Why?  I was charged a $260.00 "Smoking Charge" after I checked out.  The problem with that is that I don't smoke.  I've NEVER smoked in my life.  No one smoked in my room.  When I talked to the hotel Manager Art Colliente, he was rudely adamant about it and I was informed that the charges would stay.

Now, I HATE people who smoke in nonsmoking rooms.  I always have.  I have had issues with other hotels about this.  I am an international Opera and Musical Theater Performer with Asthma.  Does that put it into perspective?

More and more hotels (Marriott is the biggest one of these BTW) are now making those who check into their establishments, sign a few little boxes...one of those boxes is a "smoking clause" that states that if they find you have been smoking in your room, they can charge that exorbitant fee.  The problem with this is what I experienced.  What happens when you check out and someone comes in there and smokes and then leaves?  A service person, maid,,,who ever?  Now what?

I looked all over the internet and found some very interesting comments and exposes by local and regional TV and newspapers across the US about this very issue.  All pretty much say you are screwed.

I write this to say..."Beware" of this hotel and possibly of other Marriott Hotels.  Don't say I didn't warn you.

We recently ventured to San Diego as my wife bought me a Dolphin Interaction at Sea World for my birthday.

I travel a lot for work and usually stay at Marriotts. Fortunately I had accumulated enough points to score three free nights and the Mission Valley Courtyard. It was in a great location. It was within walking distance of many restaurants and shops and about a 5 minute drive from Balboa Park and Sea World.

The accommodations were pretty decent and exactly what you would expect from a Courtyard. The only room they had available was right in front of the elevator. However, we didn't have any problem with noise. We enjoyed our stay, and I'd readily go back.

    Overall - 4/5
    Departure experience - 2/5
    Free internet
    Complimentary coffee in AMs
    $16 self parking per day
    $250 cash/debit deposit on top of RM/TX

This courtyard was recently renovated as I'm told. The lobby area is really nice, a lot of seating with outlets. There's a free business area with printers, as well as a boarding pass station. They also serve complimentary coffee by the boarding pass station in the AMs so grab your free cup before heading out for the day.

The room was nice, but didn't get to use the pool or enjoy the bistro. There's also a "Market" area for snacks and sundries and its easily charged to the room.

The location is easily accessible to restaurants and Fashion Valley Mall. It's also about 10 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, which was why we stayed here.

Only big downside is if you put down a cash deposit without a card on file, they have to call housekeeping to check your room before cash is refunded back. I understand the theory, but it makes for a delayed check out experience, which I didn't mind, but the 5 people behind me probably did. Sorry.

    Would stay again.

The only negative thing about this hotel is that you have to pay for parking. 16 dollars a night! =(

it's relatively new and modern.  the staff are friendly and because we are Marriott members we stay loyal and have certain expectations of Marriott hotels and this location matches those expectations.

    free wifi in your room

free coffee and water for you.  Marriott is going green so help save the earth and don't wash your sheets and towel if you are staying for more than 1 night!

Still has the same impeccable service that I had received from my last stay a few years ago. The hotel is close by to most of the places I visited during my trip, and also had easy access to the freeway. Seems like it's a very family friendly hotel too, as I saw several of them go in and out during check-in. In town for the Chargers vs 9ers game, maybe? I was a bit hesitant at first to book my room here mainly because of the parking fee, but they were able to accommodate 2 cars for the same daily charge. Nice! My chances of returning here on a future trip are very likely.

We were presently surprised by the very new, modern decor of this hotel's interior.  The lobby and adjacent restaurant were particularly eye-catching and offer multiple outlets, an accessible business center, and free WiFi to cater to business travelers while also providing comfortable couches and TVs for those looking to just relax.  The cafe was reasonably priced and our salad and coffee cake were tasty.

We opted for the late checkout for a nominal fee so we could stay until 4:00pm and essentially use the hotel as our office for the day.  They even cleaned our room once during breakfast.  The only cons were pricey overnight parking and not many restaurant or entertainment options on its nearby Hotel Circle.  Overall, the staff was accommodating, the room was comfortable, and we will definitely stay here again.

I was not pleased about the $16 a night parking with no option to park anywhere else. The lobby is lovely and being a Platinum member I recieved a top floor room, 2 VIP drink coupons, and a "bonus" which I'm not alowed to tell you about, you need to stay 75+ nights a year to find out!

I typically stay at the full service Marriott off Qualcomm way. It was booked so this was my second choice. I'm not disappointed. I like the new lobbies and this place is hopping. It's a bit more difficult to get in and out and around from however nothing a little home town GPS can't solve.

I must warn you though, the parking issue is... how shall I say? Unfortunate.

They've remodeled, the lobby has the "new" Marriott bistro vibe/lobby vibe for those who travel and stay @ multiple Marriott locations. The standard rooms are very nice, it's quiet and not too far from the gaslamp. Tip included = 20 cab ride to the gaslamp. All the hotel staff is extremely friendly, however, if you are going to get your starbucks fix in the AM, give yourself plenty of time. They are packed in the morning and due to only having one machine, the drinks don't come out right away. The pool/jacuzzi is nice and open till 11pm daily. Make sure if you call a cab to use the front desk and one of there "preferred" drivers. Other cabbies are quick to attempt to rip you off going to and from this location. Parking is $16/night even for plat/elite members, but I would suggest this hotel for people looking to escape for the weekend or even families, I was very satisfied with our stay.

I'm a Marriott Rewards member, so when booking a hotel room, my first choice is always a Marriott property.  The Courtyard San Diego Mission Valley did not disappoint.  Newly remodeled, the hotel is chic and classy.  Our hotel room was beautiful and extremely clean.  Housekeeping was friendly and accommodating and never once did we have to wait longer than 10-15 minutes from the time we placed a request to obtain additional towels and toiletries.

During our 3 night stay, we took advantage of the very cool and newly remodeled bar and bistro area.  To our surprise, the prices were very reasonable for both food, snacks and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic).  There were very modern conversation-friendly sitting areas and open, but private seating areas with flat screen tvs great for catching a sporting event or the news.  The front desk staff was helpful and pleasant.

The pool area was a little small and situated along side a driveway leading to the front and back parking lots.  That was probably the biggest downside.  The workout center was well equipped with the latest and greatest cardio equipment and weight machines good enough to give you a good workout during your stay.

I definitely give this hotel "two-thumbs" up and 4 stars -- I had to minus a star for the odd placing of the swimming pool and its size.  But other than that, I can't think of any other place I'll stay when I'm in San Diego.  The staff, location, the facility and the reasonably priced rates are worth coming back for.

I'm supposed to write this review a couple months ago, but I got sidetracked. My girlfriend and I stay here for two nights for labor day weekend, and I have to say, that we have an awesome long weekend.

Pros: Good size bedroom with flat screen tv, sofa bed, and very clean bathroom.
Breakfast was awesome, it felt like I went to a restaurant to have breakfast, but the good thing is its FREE. They have everything that you want, feels like being home. Cereal, bagels, bacon, eggs, and pancakes. You can also create your own omelette, pick whatever you want and they'll cook it right in front of you. Again, its free... Isn't that awesome? Just don't forget the tip after you guys!

The staff were also nice and very helpful. For the room price, I think we paid around $120 a night. I think its pretty reasonable because the breakfast itself cost about $15 per person, so that's $120 - $30 so that's like paying $90 a night. They also have a good size swimming pool and jacuzzi, and we sat on the gazibo after. Wow! writing this review makes me wanna come back again.

Cons: I'm not really sure if I have anything to put here.

    I would recommend this place!

Had to attend a wedding and needed a place to stay and this hotel had a great saturday rate of $107.00 and was near everyplace I needed to be.. Room was clean and the hotel is very nice. Lobby, bar, pool, etc. Think they did a make over. I did not eat at the hotel or use the bar for drinks. Went to the 24/hour mini store. $14.00 for two beers. Ouch. Oh, well. Parking is $16 a night. Kinda steep? Just like the massive hill in the back of the hotel. Hope you have good brakes. Beds are comfy, good plumbing. Lots of hot water. Now some things that made me think....I got a king delux room but received a two bed room. When I asked they told me that the hotel was at 100% capacity. I booked the room in advance? Why all the cops and vagabonds in the back lot? Why do you only get one coffee for the coffee maker for a room booked for two people? Is it due to the Star Bucks in the lobby? Nice overnighter, not an extended stay for me.

Whenever my boyfriend and I come to San Diego, we try to stay at Marriotts because of his points. Now, I'm starting to think we should stay at Courtyards because the renovations are so chic and contemporary, they add another star to their overall rating (and value!).

The comfort level is already high because it's a Marriott but the dark cherry woods, brushed steel, angular furniture and ample lighting and design really bring out its potential. It brought the Courtyard from a mid-level inn status to the level of a 3-4 star hotel. The linens and bed were so comfortable I never wanted to leave (I have a thing for hotel linens bc their thread count is higher than what you would normally buy!), and the swivel flat screen LCD TV was a nice addition.

Customer service was good, as it usually is at Marriotts, and the parking lot was spacious. Hotel Circle was the easiest road to maneuver because everything was literally in or around the circle so you couldn't possibly get lost. The freeway is also a few paces away so convenience was at an all-time high.

There's really not much else I could say about this hotel other than that I was extremely pleased with my stay and would love to return (the only thing better would be a comped stay...).

Enjoyed a recent stay at this Hotel. I enjoyed the location... not very far from downtown, and the airport. A ten minute walk to the train that will take you to most spots worth seeing in San Diego. Rooms were clean and hotel was very quiet. Lobby had computers for printing boarding passes, and internet with printers. Nice area in the lobby to grab some coffee, light breakfast in the morning, plus a cozy bar for the evenings. Only down side was the 16.00 a day for parking. Other than that I would stay again in the future.

This is an excellent hotel. It is in a great location. Not far from downtown and many of the other area attractions.

It was updated recently. The lobby looks great and is quite functional. This is one of the few hotels I have stayed at where the lobby is actually a hang out place. There are always people hanging around in the lobby. The energy level is usually pretty high as well.

The rooms have been updated as well. They have hi-def flat screens. They are pretty good sized.

The pool area is a cool hang out place. My only complaint is that there is no waiter service or bar by the pool. A short trip to the lobby fixed that problem though.

This hotel is also usually competitively priced for the area. It is well worth it.

My wife and stayed at the Courtyard Marriott and had a pleasant stay. We were on the 9th floor with a room facing north. Out the window there was a view of the golf course, the hills, and freeway.
There must have been some kid event because there were tons of kids everywhere, but they were well behaved so there was no issue there.
The room was clean and comfortable. My only gripe was that the cleaning service started a bit too early for me, around 9am. We countered the cleaning service by placing the do not disturb sign on the door so crisis averted. My other issue was with my TV in the room. It kept saying no signal so I first called the front desk and they sent a maintenance person over that pressed some buttons and got it going, but after I turned off the TV I would have to get and press the buttons on the TV to get a signal. A little irritating but manageable.
Overall,  my wife and I enjoyed our stay. The hotel is family friendly and is centrally located if you want to go anywhere in San Diego. The beach is a 5-10 minute drive, old town about 5 minutes driving, and downtown SD is about another 10 minutes away., and less then 5 minutes away to the shopping malls fashion valley and mission valley. Oh and did I mention that the wifi is free!!! Great place for the price. I will definitely be coming back.

This is probably one of my favorite inexpensive places to send relatives to when they're visiting (my couch is certainly not up to par for some of my family members).

This hotel is relatively new, and gives people a lot of bang for their buck. Nice rooms, good work out center and pool, and very nice staff.

Also, a little random, but really comfortable beds.

This is definitely a no-frills type hotel, but for what you get it's great.

Courtyards are always awesome for business traveler's and this one is no exception.  They remodeled this one and it is beautiful.  The thing I like the most is the abundance of electrical plugs in the room....you won't find that at La Quinta or Holiday Inn.  Some rooms even have a stereo you can hook up your iPod or smart phone and stream music.  It's also nice to have a decent restaurant and bar in the lobby as well as a little store to buy waters or snacks. State employees and law enforcement with ID get a discounted rate as well.

This is my first time staying at hotel during Comic-Con. The hotel is far enough from the convention center but not too far. What also was cool was that we were able to pick up our badges at the Town & Country, which is right across from the Courtyard Marriott. You have to walk underneath the freeway to get there. Hotels cost a lot during the time around Comic Con but if you have a travel agent you can get a better rate than Comic Con's price. Our room was $189 a night!

Don't forget to use your Courtyard Marriott reward account when you book your trip!

My friend and I arrived on Wed at 3pm (check in time). This hotel does its job and serves its purpose. There is plenty of parking around the hotel and the parking lot extends to the back of the Hotel as well as both sides.

When you first arrive, the hotel looks like it has been modernized. On the right are three kiosks, with the hotel workers manning each station to check you in/check you out/ etc. On the left is their Bistro restaurant and their business center. Their business center has internet, a printer for you to print and other things that you might need if you're staying there for business. Behind the business center is a HDTV and a Nintendo Wii so if you need to kill time in the lobby, this is the place to go. There is also a convenience shop for you to buy drinks and snacks (I didn't buy anything so I don't what their prices are).

The rooms are quite nice. I was put in an end room near the ice machine. We couldn't hear the ice machine at all. The rooms are roomy, with two beds, a desk, one big lounge chair, HDTV, cabinet w/closet and a night stand. You also get free WiFi which is a huge plus! Only problem with that is the network is unsecure so make sure that you have a anti-virus program running to safeguard your personal info!

Other things about the hotel include the pool and jacuzzi, which you can't be in there after 11pm. My group was in the pool till 12am one night but the security guard was really nice, simply informing us that we couldn't be in the pool. Their fitness room also rocks. Unlike most "fitness" rooms, this one had a weight set and a multi-purpose weight machine. There were also four treadmills and a exercise ball. Like everything in this hotel, there was also a HDTV in the fitness room at all.

The only thing that is preventing me from giving this place 5 stars is that this hotel charges per night for parking. Parking was $48 for three nights. You get a small tag that goes on your windshield or rearview mirror.

Checkout was easy. You can checkout any time before 12pm and if you need to check out later, you can pay a fee to extend your checkout time to 4pm.  You can check out in your room or downstairs. I tried checking out through my room but I guess because I was in the last 30 min before checkout time, I had to go downstairs to do it. It wasn't a big problem since you have to pass by the kiosks anyways to get to the parking lot.

This is a great hotel! They have great services and friendly staff!

There's a couple better than average things about this hotel. The first floor is very open, it includes the check-in desk(s), lot's of seating for conversation and lots of casual meeting space. There's a nice cafe that has a variety of food options ranging from snacks to things a little heartier.
And yes, they have a pretty substantial coffee menu.  They were even able to make a soy latte.
...and the bar, yes there's a bar in the lobby.  I stopped by after dinner and the bar was pretty full at 11:00.  Plenty of people to strike up a conversation with - if you'd like.
The room was comfortable and recently updated. Lots of pillows, comfortable mattress, modern bath - really everything you need in a business hotel.
One complaint: the parking lot is nearly impossible to get out of.  When arriving, you'll enter the parking lot and get a ticket. You'll need to take that ticket to the check in desk and get a card to get out.  Each time you leave, and then come back, you'll get a new ticket... throw it away; you'll need to use the original ticket.
      All-in-all, a great business hotel.

Warning - They charge $16/day to park your car in the parking lot! What the heck?! Maybe that is customary in San Diego (I live near San Jose), but how do these people sleep at night? I'm not talking valet parking, I'm not talking VIP parking spots. There is a parking lot in the front and back of the hotel, and when you check in they charge you $16/night to park your car! They give you a small tag to hang in your mirror or place on your dash.

There is free wifi, but no free continental breakfast. They have free coffee in the morning, but that's it. There is a cafe with breakfast foods and my sister and I got a yogurt parfait, strawberries, bagel, and bottle of water for $12. The hot breakfast buffet was $14 for an adult and included scrambled eggs, bacon, french toast, and some pastries.

The rooms are nice, modern, and clean. The hotel is close to the free way for easy on/easy off. They have a pool with cool trendy lounge chairs and couches around it. There is also a hot tub. I feel safe here and I'm not worried about my car getting broken into. For $16/day they better have some freaking surveillance. Next time I come to San Diego I'm looking for a place with free parking and free wifi.

Agree with Malena D.  Customer service sucks.  I was having a drink at the bar....no one else was there.  It was 5 pm.  I'm reading a book, and all of the sudden the female bartender turns down the lights .  Now I can't read because I need light.  So I said to her, "why did you turn down the lights?". Her response was " I'm supposed to do that when we re 'officially' open.". So I said, "but no one is sitting here except me, I'm reading a book and need the light."   She said "if I don't turn them down, my manager yells at me.". She also spent most of her time flirting with another employee (male) and texting on her iPhone.

People at check in acted like I was nuisance when all I wanted to do was check in.

About the room...only two coffee packets...one decaf and one regular.  Give me  break...this is individual coffee packets.

I wouldn't recommend this place nor will I stay here again.  I should add, I was here on business, and this is probably a great place for families with kids.

I am a Marriott Rewards member so i always look for marriott hotels first. This courtyard marriott did not disappoint. It looked completely renovated in the pictures and i was not wrong. I stayed at this hotel over 5 years ago when it was a crappy holiday inn, but man did they do a good job on the remodel! From the lobby to the room, everything is almost brand-new. The service was attentive and while this is not supposed to be a 5 star hotel type of deal, it is still very very very good for it's price. I bought this room for 90 bucks a night? ridiculous. I especially love the convenient "online check in/boarding pass" complimentary print center in the lobby. You can check in online for free at most major airline websites and print out your ticket at the printer in the lobby.

Other pleasurable experiences including the staff nice enough to print me out a few copies of my resume for free for a conference. They did not even take my offer to pay for it.

This hotel comes highly recommended by a tough hotel critic + frequent marriott guest.

I loved my stay @ the Courtyard Marriott Mission Valley/ Hotel Circle in San Diego. It was close to everything. Sea World, the Zoo & Downtown. I love the Gaslamp District. I was just so fucking amazed about all the clubs & all the beautiful woman. Pacific Beach was cracking too. San Diego is the shit. I'm coming back. Yeah Buddy !!

Stayed here this past weekend for one night. It was my second visit. Convenient location in Hotel Circle. The new renovations throughout are nice. The room was clean, but I felt a bit cramped. The only minor complaint was that the elevators were very small, and it was difficult to squeeze the luggage dolley (is that the correct term???) in and out.

For a basic, no-frills hotel, I would stay here again.

Love this hotel. Rates are usually pretty good, location convenient if needed to get around all areas of SD, while keeping out of traffic.
Decor is new and modern, so once entering the lobby, it feels like you're in a chic modern hotel, not a chain.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I did not stay here. However, I did call Marriott USA to set up the reservation, came by early to check the room out, leave a few gifts and make sure it was up to par and of course, paid for it. So... if that's not enough for you, read a different review.

So the back story is this: My sister got married over the weekend and had no plans whatsoever on where to stay the first night of the married life. They had some plans to stay with family but THE HOOT (if you don't know her, I won't explain) had the bright idea a few days earlier to put them up in a hotel. The question was which hotel? Weddings should be as much of a party as a formality and that typically means people are getting a little tipsy. Up in this club. Or up in the backyard after the reception, as the case happened to be.

So of course, some questions ran through my mind.

How dope is this hotel supposed to be?
Are they going to be too drunk to remember it?
How drunk am I going to be in terms of logistics to drive them?
    Etc....

While I know our economy and unemployment rate is supposed to be shit right now, you sure wouldn't have any idea by looking at the hotel industry. Rooms at any of the various hotels in downtown San Diego were all $350+. I thought no one was traveling? How about some deals!?

So instead of dropping $400 on a room at the Omni, I opted for a familiar face. The Courtyard Marriot is typically where we're instructed to stay for work travel. The hotels are decent, not four star of course, but far from a Holiday Inn.

Without using any discount websites, I found a king room at the Mission Valley location for $119 a night which is the market rate for most Courtyard Marriot locations. After an awkward reservation on the phone (with a different department of Marriot hotels, not the hotel itself) a reservation was set up in the husband's name with my payment information on the room.

We headed over to check out the hotel a few hours before dropping them off and I have to say, for a seasoned work traveler, I was pretty impressed. Shit, I was really impressed. Apparently I'm missing the higher end Courtyards when I travel. Now that I know they exist I don't think I could go back to the locations in the middle of the burbs in Anywhere, USA. The lobby was really nicely laid out and flowed easily into a bar and restaurant area that didn't look too contrived (even for being in a hotel) The front desk wasn't just a pale white bar with an unhappy looking attendant standing behind a lone bell and some tourist maps, either. The whole hotel had a more modern look to it which was a nice change from many of the other locations which focus on that goofy "elegant" look. You know, lots of green carpet and dark woods. Blah. This must be some new paradigm of Marriot hotels - a hip version.

While I tried hard to ignore that either the ceiling, or the fire exit door was crooked (it was one of the two, I guarantee it) as we walked down the corridor to the room I was again impressed by the hall space. Too often hotels neglect their hallways. Smokey smelling stained carpet, dirty walls...etc. Not here. Maintenance goes a long way.

Inside the room the modern theme continued on with reds and browns being the main color scheme of the entire place. The king room (just king size bed, don't get too excited) came with a mini-fridge, decent view (from the 9th floor) of the golf course across the street and the most elaborate desk I've seen at a Courtyard location, anywhere. There were plug ins for HDMI cables, RCA cables, computer monitor cables....etc. Now, I'm not one to travel with a DVD player or anything like that but I thought that was an awesome addition to the room, especially a room for $119 a night. Perhaps this is the new world. iPod dock clock radios and now any kind of plug in you could ever need in the room, projecting to the nice and large flat screen HD set.

When you're traveling for work, especially in a place that is unfamiliar, it's nice to be in a place that feels somewhat like home, or at least in the same decade. The age of boring old hotels with their elegant wood molding and uninviting entries and rooms are over. That all said, I'm glad the Marriott has entered this new realm in the Courtyard line of business. A division of the hotel chain that caters specifically to business travelers. They've now made their more affordable rooms more appealing to the leisure traveler, as well. Maybe even two newlyweds who don't spend too much time in hotel limbo.

If you're looking for a hotel in San Diego that is close enough to the action (with a rental car) but don't want to break the bank in the process, this is definitely a worthwhile spot to check out.

Oh yeah, and they loved their stay.
