Our family of four are bicycling self-supported from Penticton, BC to Newfoundland.

Usually we don't mention all the motels or hotels we occasionally have to stay at, because we don't want this to be dubbed the "credit card tour" but we have to tell you about the Courtenay Bay Hotel at Haymarket Square in downtown Saint John.

We'd arrived cold and chilled, hungry and tired, and needing a bed. Mark, the front desk clerk, was our bike angel last night. His warm smile, eagerness to offer the Waterloo Conference room for storing our bikes and trailers in, and his overall friendliness, sure ended our day on a posiive note.

Brenda, in the restaurant, was personable and made us feel very welcomed. Aurella (sp) the bellman/houseman seemed to know exactly what we needed before we even realized it ourselves.

After dinner I spent three hours on the lobby internet and before Mark and Brenda ended their shifts they came over to wish us all the best, and Aurella sent me to bed with half a dozen cookies for the boys! At least if we are in a bind and have to stay in a hotel, it sure is nice when the service is to high standards. Friendliness is of such key importance.

This morning as we approached the front desk to check out, the new bellman went to unlock the room before we even had to ask. One step ahead of guests.

I complimented the General Manager, Craig Nickerson, on his valuable employees. The Courtenay Bay is tops in our eyes - an asset to this city of 89,000 people.
