    DAMN, Gina!  What a gem!

My colleague returned a favor by treating me to a fish and chips lunch.  She lives in the area and had never been so it was a first for the both of us.

The fish was absolutely one of the best fish on a chips plate that I've ever had - top 3 for sure!  The breading didn't slip off, it was nicely seasoned and the fish itself was sweet, succulent and not overly flaky.  FRESH! FRESH! FRESH! Tartar sauce was very nice too!

Decor is no frills - pretty cool B&W photos of fishermen and all things mariner on the wall.  The menu is posted above the counter and the specials are hand-written on the adjacent wall.  Order up, sit down, pick up, chow down.   The ladies behind the counter are also a delight!

The prices are also very reasonable - in fact, cheap!   For fish this fresh, they can charge a $5 premium and I would not argue!  If you wanted, you can grab some fresh seafood from the market two doors down and they'll cook it up for you!

Definitely coming back here for my seafood fix!

This is just for the Clam Chowder (to-go): It was a 48 degree and rainy May day in Boston so it seemed like the perfect day for clam chowder. I took a 15 minute drive to Court House Seafood on my lunch break to get some clam chowder to-go and it was pretty disappointing.

The chowder was pretty bland and wasn't creamy at all. It was definitely lacking clams-they should throw way more in there. I'd rather go to Legal Seafood next time.

On the plus side: when I stopped by, the place was pretty busy during lunch and the fried seafood smelled amazing so i'll go back for that but I wont try their chowder again :( Parking wasn't too bad but Cambridge St. can be busy and definitely bring quarters.

I LOVE little hole-in-the-wall restaurants that turn out to be a fabulous find :-)  It's definitely not a fancy sit-down seafood restaurant, but the food speaks for itself. Our party had a mixture of food... New England clam chowder: good, but needed salt; fish and chips were very good; the whole-bellied clams were excellent; the lobster roll (my entree) was delicious. This little place is definitely one that we will visit again. Excellent food at affordable prices.

Oh! One improvement: they need to serve beer! LOL

As far as cheap, excellent seafood goes, this is the best around.  It's a cool little counter-type restaurant in East Cambridge.

I tried the fish and chips and the crab roll.  Both were excellent.  I left feeling stuffed and happy.  ;)

I will be returning and telling all my friends and family about this place in the meantime.

Highly recommend by fellow yelpers, so I gave it a try. Good local place, nothing fancy, that's ok (self seating), just here for fresh fish. :) I got the haddock'n chips, a generous amount of haddock for the price ($9.95), lightly battered, and golden brown. Crispy! Not over fried or dry. Tender fresh fish, so sweet. So good! I wasn't a fan of the chips, just a bit undercooked for my taste, but not a problem, again just here for the fish. :)

A no frills place but it has great lobster rolls and crabmeat rolls.  French fries aren't that great but the seafood rolls are a must-try.  Ambiance can also be improved but it's the food that really counts so 4 stars.

Happened upon this place quite by chance about a month ago and have been coming back regularly ever since. Its very no frills, but in a good way. The restaurant side of a fish market two doors down, the fish has been uniformly great. The cooking is definitely straightforward, so I can see why some reviews say its flavorless. The quality of the fish redeems it. Not to mention the surprisingly large menu and extremely reasonable prices. They go beyond simple fried food to offer a nice selection of broiled or steamed dishes and daily specials that have kept me coming back.

The staff has always been fantastically friendly and they keep the place spotless even during their very busy lunch rush. As soon as someone gets up from a table, a staff member is out to clean the table almost immediately. They clearly care about the restaurant. Thrilled to find this place and plan on making it a regular stop.

Weeeeel---I was in Boston for my annual trip to see the family and of course needed to get my "seafood" fix. Where to go? Out and about in E.Cambridge, we found the Court House Seafood Restaurant. I was really expecting something WAY more than what I found------at least according to all the 4 & 5 stars from Yelpers. **scratching head**

It's a small place, well located in E. Cambridge-- seating was quite limited but we managed to snag a table right in the front at the window. with a nice view of E. Cambridge St. This was a  PLUS.

The place was filled with suited professionals, local blue-collars, overweight tourists and burly cops from the Court House--a nice motley arrangement of hungry folks----------Ok so far so good....

I always regret eating "fried food" about 30 minutes after I eat it...BUT....when in Boston do as the Bostonians do----------------I couldn't resist the Fried Mussel Special for $9.00. My dining partner opted for the Fried Schrod....weeel....

My oysters had been pre-fried and left to sit---------& you know what that means---cold and "clammy"....pardon the well intentioned pun.....BUT.....ya gotta have fried clams and oysters RIGHT OUTTA THE PAN, know what I mean??.... French fries ok, tartar sauce good. I tasted the fried fish and it was superb---flakey, tastey and moist--a  good sized portion.

All in all an ok place but not representative of Beantown's BEST seafood by any stretch.

I have had the fried haddock & chips, the fish cakes, loved the lobster roll & fried clam roll!  Great portions! THe best tartar sauce!
Everything is so fresh, service is quick & always friendly. Prices are reasonable and you walk into a place with generations of this family working here! love it!

Ah, this place is perfect for when you're craving beach-day-at-the-Cape food but don't want to sit through all the traffic and actual hassle of going to the beach. Not to mention the sunburns and sand in your ears! Who wants this??

Courthouse is a little "cafeteria" with a market right next door. The dinners are really large, and they come with cole slaw AND fries. I would recommend splitting among two people, and then getting a chowder or something.

We ordered the clam strips dinner ($10), large bowl of chowder, and lobster roll ($13, but priced daily). Extremely reasonable prices but a bit too much food for 2 hungry people! I was definitely pushed to my limits. The clam strips are divine and I still dream about the batter till this day. The chowder was quite good and standard New England-style with no real twists. The lobster roll had an absurd amount of lobster in it for the price, and tasted very fresh. Our friends got the same dinner along with a side of onion rings (which wasn't really a side... could have been a dinner on its own!) Next time, I'll try the fish and chips!

This is one of those restaurants that makes me love being a cheap graduate student living in Cambridge. I'll come back, again and again and again.

Their broiled haddock and the fries were well cooked (fish was flaky and fries were crispy), but flavorless. Have we heard of seasoning, folks?

Is there any alternative to buying bottled water (which costs them $0.10) for $1.88? Like a cup o' tap?

So excited to have an awesome homey seafood restaurant in the hood. We had (4) people in our party and we got soft drinks, crab cake and four entrees, and it came to only $60, which is unheard of for a large seafood meal. I got the diet special, which was baked scrod and sides. Amazingly fresh and tasty. Everyone was so happy, no one spoke.

I was hoping for more and got less.

It is right down the block from my house and I love deep fried seafood.

It was ok.  I wanted more though.

Everyone who works here is great but the seafood is just not that spectacular and i want amazing.

Work on your fries because they are not good.

But for the price and the fact that it is 5 minutes from my house I will go again.

Great prices, and terrific home-style seafood that you know is fresh. I loved the fried clams and oysters. Fish and chips were generous and tasty. Everyone who came in seemed like part of the neighborhood--and eating here, you felt like you were, too.

My only objection is their store hours--closed on Sundays, closes very early on Saturday for dinner, etc. I understand this is a family-run restaurant, but I wish they would expand their hours!

    Hours:

Great tasting, fresh seafood. I love the baked haddock plate, and the fish and chips is very good (although I think it's just their tartar sauce - I could eat a pint of it).

Minus one star because they close at 7 p.m. Otherwise, I think it's reasonably priced and pretty good quality seafood.

Was next door trying out Cambridge Street Cleaners, which was a yelp recommendation. Asked the owner to recommend a good place to grab some food. He said "next door (Court House Seafoods" has great food. It looks like a traditional restaurant from the outside. Its actually more a take out environment with indoor tables.
Tried the Fish and Chips ($6.99 Saturday special), clam chowder, and baked salmon. Everything was good! The Fish and Chips was had a very light batter, moist, flaky and provided great portions, Chowder had a great stock, not as creamy as traditional chowder. The salmon was perfectly seared! Total was $27 with a couple of sodas. The service was great; the place is maintained well, with constant customers.
Would defiantly come again to try the rest of the menu! Someone order lobster with mussels that just looked Ridiculous!..coming back to try.

i like court house and i like the rotund man-pies that litter the dining room on a regular basis, chuckling and masticating lobster rolls and speaking in spite of mouth fulls of onion rings: WHE'D YUH PAHK THE FAHCKIN CAH MAHTY? LAT'S GAT AH ASSES OVA TA THA PAHK SOON.

TRANSLATION: Where did you part the f*cking car, marty? let us get our asses over to the park soon.

i wish i were one of them. rather, i am woman doomed to fat-free food. for the time being anyways.

nevertheless, a pristine piece of broiled, salted, peppered haddock, cod, or scrod with a generous side of steamed veggies does the trick. i love love living around the corner from a no-frill seafood restaurant like court house, with fresh fish, chattering mens, and an affordable, simple menu.

yum! also check out the fish store next door- sometimes i pick up cod or shrimp there, good stuff!

Ideal little fish house. If you like fish like me this place will be the best. A hidden gem appropriate outside the Boston City Limits. The fish will be the freshest for the reason that the owners also have a fish marketplace next door to the restaurant. The staff is friendly and quickly, the portions are Big and the location is sparkling clean. My only complaint is that they needs to be open for longer hours, just a little later for those of us who work late.

I had a big ol' tub of clam chowder from Courthouse today for my lunch and it was fishy-fatteny-gorgeous. Look at me becoming all New-Englander in my final days here. What next? Flippin' cars when our sports teams win? Saying wicked pissah and pretending I'm Irish? Wearing boat shoes, khaki shorts and a backward Sox cap when taking out the boat with Murph and Danny at the weekend?

    ...the possibilities!

This place is FANTASTIC. The seafood here is wonderfully tasty, and they have a really great variety with daily specials. My boyfriend is a chef and worked with seafood for over a year, and he considers eating here a treat. They cook everything extremely well, and they don't overdo anything - they let the good quality seafood speak for itself.

The restaurant itself is small, but the people are super friendly. A lot of locals go here regularly - it's definitely one of the hidden gems of East Cambridge. And the best part - if you want something that's not on the menu, you can buy something from their seafood store next door and they'll bring it over here and cook it for you!

Also, if you like tartar sauce, you MUST TRY the tartar sauce here. It's homemade and to die for. The bf and I have been known to lick it off our fingers after the seafood is all gone because it's just THAT GOOD.

I grew up in the Midwest, where it's hard to understand people saying things like "the fish was so fresh, it didn't taste like fish!" Courthouse Seafood Restaurant taught me how that works. Really, really good low-key food; take your out-of-town guests along if they won't mind plastic silverware and cafeteria trays.

Good points: Terrifyingly fresh fish, tasty fish cakes, will fry anything on the menu if you ask.

Bad points: Closes before 7pm, poorly insulated in winter, will fry anything on the menu if you ask.

While my folks were in town they had one mission: eat as much seafood as possible.  Luckily I live steps from Court House so off we went.

Shortly after opening for lunch they weren't very busy and that allowed for some awesome banter with the crew and my family and eventually some picture taking.  This made for a great experience before the food even came out.  Luckily, the food maintained that pace.  The fish and chips were perfectly fried and the baked haddock was delicious.  We left stuffed and happy to have eaten here.

So happy in fact that the 'rents decided that dinner too should come from Court House.  Seriously.  We went back for dinner.  The same day.

This time around I got the shrimp saute with rice which was simple and delicious.  The folks got more haddock and continued to enjoy that as well.  The standout during this trip was the clam chowder.  Wicked step-mother ordered a cup and we sampled.  Shortly thereafter I was up at the register buying a few more.  Including one for the old man who HATES clam chowder.  Yes folks, theirs is that good.

I like that the place is low-key (paper plates, Styrofoam cups, etc) without getting ghetto.  But most of all I like the staff.  They're fun, friendly, and they whip out some mean seafood deals.

Why bother going to Legal when you can get better quality and personal service here?

I'd been wanting to try Court House forever because of the raves on Yelp, but every time I passed by it was closed. And no wonder. They close at 7 on most days, 6 on Saturdays and 3 on Mondays! Absurd! But on Fridays they're open til 8, so four friends and I gave it a whirl.

It's all 70s wood paneling and senior citizens, and you order at the counter. The bf got there early enough to get a clam chowder and recommended it, but apparently he had the last bowl because by the time the rest of us arrived (around 6:45) they were out. Then he had the shrimp scampi, six delicious jumbo shrimp swimming in garlic and butter over rice pilaf for $11.99. I got the pick any two fried seafood platter, a great value at $12.99. It was a heaping plate of fries, tender scallops and fat, savory clams. Yum! But like at many seafood shacks, the fries were gummy and bland. Why are so few people capable of frying up a juicy clam and also a succulent potato?

The baked haddock special and the broiled salmon were fresh and delicious as well. Better hours, better fries and this would be the perfect seafood spot.

Got here on a Thursday afternoon, and there were hardly any customers. But I trusted yelpers on pointing me to the right place for Lobster Roll.

The Lobster Roll ($12.95) was pretty tasty, the bread was nicely toasted, with chunks of lobster meat in it, the only complain I have was the mayo might be a bit too much, since it covered up the flavor of the lobster.

Clam Chowder tasted okay, wasn't very creamy~

Definitely will stick with the Lobster Roll next time!

After all the great reviews, I was pretty disappointed with the reality of this place. Chowder was blah - tender clams, but overall pretty tasteless. I got my order to go, so couldn't even add any salt. Lobster roll was decent for the price (I think $12.99?), but nothing special. Good amount of meat, but on a cheap grocery store hot dog bun that quickly fell apart.

Boston Chowda Co. was soooo much better

I can't speak about the restaurant as I've only visited the fish market. It's right down the street from New Deal, so you owe it to yourself to come here as well to do some comparison shopping.

I might be mistaken but it seems the selection here at Court House is a little larger than at New Deal and the prices are slightly lower -- perfect price range for if you want to bake up a honkin' big fillet of something, which I usually do.  They also carry a lot of Portuguese staples that you might need to go with your fish, as well as any sausages (linguica or chourico).  I got some pollack from here, absolutely fantastic, and should go without saying that it's tons better than anything you can get at a supermarket.  Spoil yourself a little and get your fish here :)

Best fish & chips in the area!

Ask my fish & chips aficionado husband - he will tell you that this is the way all fish & chips should be made - with dry batter!
Their fish are fresh and portions huge!! If you go on a Wednesday for fish & chips day, you'll pay $6.99 for a ton of fish & chips. But if you ask me, you should go for the haddock & chips, it's worth the extra $2.

They have weird hours though, so make sure to check before you go there.

my only gripe is that a good 75% of the menu is fried food.  ...but who cares about eating healthy when on vacation.
the chowder was delicious...i also had the scallops and crab cakes.  those were very good as well.

I live around the corner from Court House Seafood.  Their simple fish dishes are absolutely fresh, always well-prepared.  It's not fancy, but it's honest, clean food.  I've eaten here dozens of times, never had a bad piece of fish.  They do have iceberg lettuce-type salad (also always fresh), and cooked broccoli, otherwise the sides are a narrow selection of the usual NE suspects -- fries, onion rings, baked potato, etc.  It's a family-run establishment where warm efficiency is the order of the day.  I have a virtually endless appreciation for this place.

PS:  no alcohol, and to be honest I'm not sure what they'd say about folks bringing their own bottle(s).

Don't be put off by the lame decor, Styrofoam plates, and plastic cutlery.  If you transported the food this place produces into a swanky back bay restaurant, halved the portions, added a little garnish, and called the french fries "pommes frites" , then you could easily double or triple the price.

Courthouse seafood gives the customers what they want: fresh seafood, cooked perfectly, for a decent price.  They have daily specials that range from $7 for the fish and chips to $11 for the baked stuffed haddock.  For those looking to spend more, they have lobster as well!

No nonsense, great seafood on the cheap = happy lunchtime costumers.

I am loving East Cambridge these days. One reason is the amazing  number of small, family owned businesses that have been around this neighborhood for years. The restaurants in East Cambridge may not look like much from the outside, but I am finding out that portions are huge, quality is unparalleled and you make new friends quickly. There are some very nice people working hard and trying to make you happy. No attitudes here.

Even though I am not a big fried food fan, I stopped into the Court House for lunch the other day and ordered fish and chips, substituting onion rings for the chips. I arrived at noon and every table was already taken. It was a very typical East Cambridge crowd. I heard three different languages and saw a conservatively dressed man with a briefcase, two elderly couples, construction workers, cops and a table filled with some lady friends. Fortunately, I was prepared for take out.

I placed my order at the counter and paid my 6.95. Within about 8 minutes, my number was called and I was handed an amazing meal. Five generous portions of fried fish, lightly crispy and perfectly cooked, two containers of tarter sauce, about a dozen onion rings, ketchup, two napkins and a fork. it was so much food- especially in terms of the fish- that I couldn't get it all in and saved half for dinner. Reheating it didn't change anything....a nice leftover meal, enhanced by a fresh squeeze of lemon.

Next time, I may get there earlier so I can snag a table.

I really love this place.   You really can't go wrong with anything in the restaurant.

What I dig more than the restaurant is the market...  the seafood is excellent, they treat you like family and will get you any special request.

The folks were in town so it was time for Lobsterfest.  A quick 10 min drive yield 9lbs of lobster, 5lbs of mussels, 5lbs of steamers and 1lb of Uni (I serve it with lemon juice and olive oil).  Everyone, including a family member that is never happy (we all have one), was raving about the quality of the seafood.

Anyway...  if I didn't marry a non-seafood eating wife (not sure how that happened), my only two stops would be Courthouse and a produce stand.

EXCELLENT.  You can't go wrong with either the market or restaurant.

Synopsis: Great seafood, friendly staff, cheap

Fish & Chips for $6.99 on Wednesday & Saturday?? That's what first got my attention.

The fish batter is crispy & tasty, the fish fresh, and the fries plentiful.  Ask for extra tartar sauce when you order, it's an extra 25 cents... but it's fish & chips for less than ten bucks, so I don't mind an extra quarter.

The people behind the counter are always nice, we once got free onion rings at the end of the night just because the girl heard us talking about them and had some extras on hand.

The lobster roll is superb!  Huge chunks of lobster, grilled bun... drooooool.

Conclusion: Go if you're starving, you're waist band will be busting and you're wallet won't be left feeling empty.

Buy your sushi fish here. This place and New Deal two blocks down are the best places to buy fresh fish in the Boston area.

The decor of the fishmarket and the smell might put you off, but they are the best. (Well, on an even par with New Deal.) Ask them for the sashimi grade fish and they will direct you to some quality stuff.

And D. A. is correct about the quality. I imagine that the expensive restaurants send a man out here to get their fish.

You know what makes a great seafood restaurant? Access to fresh fish. Well lucky for you, Court House has its own fish market right next door, guaranteeing that whatever you're served is straight from the sea.

This is my kind of place-- very clean and unassuming-- simple menu and the kitchen's out in the open. I ordered the clam chowder, my two companions the clam strips roll and haddock 'n chips. Haddock rated a 9/10, beautifully white and flaky, and the clam strips were damn good, some of the best I've ever had. They were light, despite being fried, so Court House must use good oil.

Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with the clam chowder-- it was thick but it lacked the richness that comes from the best clam chowder. All in all, it was average for clam chowder, but being in New England, you expect a little better.

I will definitely attend this fine establishment again. One thing that impressed me beside the food was when one of the guys behind the counter (possibly an owner?) came out and opened the door for a customer he was familiar with. I got the feeling that this restaurant knows its neighborhood and takes pride in serving its clientele.

Good prices. Can't wait to return and bring some friends.

About 8 months ago I started working in East Cambridge right across the street from the lovely Cambridgeside Galleria Mall, and while this is great for x-mas shopping during lunch hour and picking up my friend's b-day present in the 30 minutes between work and her party... the food selection is well... let's just say you have your choice between chinese, japanese, indian, mexican, pasta and pizza all in one circle- oh yes- the food court.

After about four months of switching between taco bell, sbarros, and the occasional high class venture down first st. for a burrito- I decided to head in the other direction up Cambridge St. and came across Court House. I'm from Michigan so I was immediately impressed with a place where you can order 30 different types of seafood for under $10. It was Wednesday, the day when fish and chips are on special. They were excellent and ready in less than 10 minutes. Friends from work and I sat together at a table in the crowded, small space. I have been back twice and gotten crab salad roll to-go, both times it was excellent (highly recommended). The best part is friendly service, good food, amazing selection, and affordable prices. Probably better for lunch than dinner- but if you are up for dinner try the market next door and cook for yourself.

OMG the BEST FISH in Metro Boston.
My friend is a local from this neighborhood and took us here for lunch.  Wow i cannot eat fish anywhere else and find it this good.  I am so glad they call it a Restaurant.  When you walk in it is like a deli or a take out spot.  You order and then have to watch as everyone gets some of the best looking food everywhere.  I have tried a lot of their menu.  DEFINATELY a 5 Star Restaurant.  Wow they could charge so much for the quality they provide and the nice and thorough staff.
This is the best place to take someone who wants fresh fish and a new england experience.

This was the first restaurant we went to when we were getting acclimated to our Cambridge neighborhood after moving out East from the West Coast.   The people were friendly behind the corner and the food yummy and we knew that our move was going to be fine.

Two years later and the food is still great with the seafood so fresh (it couldn't be fresher coming from the seafood market next door)...the fried seafood platter is wonderful as are the broiled fish dishes--a perfect mix for dinner to share so you feel not to guilty at the end having a healthy dish and a fried dish to satisfy your cravings :).
