So many cars with Ontario license plates in the parking lot that you'd think that they were having a fire sale. Beer cases stacked high on pallets near over-priced bags of milk (by Ontario standards) are a magnet for shoppers, especially those from Ontario. At savings of $6 to 20 per case (more so for premium brands) the purchase of beer from out of province visitors is extremely popular. Federal law makes it a crime to "import, send, take or transport" liquor into any province. But the law, which carries a maximum $200 fine for a first offence is, apparently, rarely enforced. I had no idea that my beer purchase was illegal. Sorry. But what I find really difficult to understand is the reason for the sharp price differences in beer between Ontario and Quebec and why milk, a more important part of our diet, is more expensive.
