My trips anywhere wouldn't be complete without a trip to Costco! Damn I love costco, wholesale prices for bulk items! I'm so jealous of this location! This location has fries and poutine! Ours in L.A. doesn't have any fries. That's a just the beginning of the many things they carry that our locations don't. Great costco, okay staff but awesome products!

Parking is congested and scarce. Finding one is like winning the lottery. And why do people walk so slow with their carts in here. It's like online shopping with dial up. I just want to scratch my eyes out. If it weren't for some of the bulk items with great prices, I would just as well buy them elsewhere. I have to admit though, their produce is high class and I secretly love their soft ice cream.

Push your way to the middle cash out line. I don't know why people herd at both ends?

This is not my favourite Costco location.

I got a membership at Costco about a year ago, mostly because I now have 2 puppies, and we go through paper towels like it's no body's business.  When shopping here, I totally have to be careful about what I buy, b/c the cupboards really start to fill up and I can't find anything - a la any pack rat-ty type person.

This Costco, I can never seem to get to in at a reasonable time, mostly b/c it's hard to find, you can't find it off the highway.  And I hate to say it, but I prefer the location in Brampton (probably b/c it's close to work, and as one of my friend's says - I'm the most efficient lunch break taker around.

For anyone who wants to go to this place, it's east of Islington, down a small street that starts with a T - you see the gas station first...then you can't miss it...

On the plus size, they really do have good prices on cheese, dish washer tabs, etc - I typically pick up cleaning supplies.  I'm not a huge meat eater, but if I could ever fathom eating 5 pounds of anything, I might pick up some meat here.  It's also good to shop here if you're preparing for a dinner party, and have a close neighbour to share with.

Why should any self-respecting downtown gal have a Costco membership?

Reason #1: I'm a small business owner, and Costco offers the BEST deal on credit card point-of-sale terminals.  The offer is through Elavon and the service has been outstanding.

Reason #2: Costco is one-stop shopping for my business supplies.

Reason #3: We entertain a lot.  I can buy good/great quality food at reasonable prices, which enables me to serve my guests fab eats.  They also have the cheapest propane and gas.

Reason #4: Costco has deals on lots of services; from painting to custom kitchens.  They also have furniture, flooring, and some appliances.  My rule of thumb; check Costco first, you never know!

Reason #5: They take EVERYTHING back... So easy to return stuff.

Reason #6:  They have the BEST Amex card... 1% back on all purchases & 3% back on all restaurants!  You get a voucher at the end of the year...mine was $50!

    :)

What can I say? I love Costco. I am a city girl with a suburbanites bulk food shopping habits. I put on my mom-jeans and shop till I drop at Costco. What do I love about Costco...
Is it the kilo of real Parmigiano for $23? Yes!
Is it the kilo real Grana Padano for $16? Yes yes!
Is it the massive bags of nuts practically being given away? Yes! Who doesn't love cheap nuts.
Is it the cookbooks marked way down, begging for me to buy them? Hell yes.
How about the 10 kilo tub of mayo? Not so much.

I truly enjoy Costco. I'm not too sure if the membership fee is worth it mathematically but they carry lots of brands not available at other stores and their own brand, Kirkland is pretty good too.

The customer service is always great and I've never had any problems with returns and exchanges.

They recently opened up a Costco gas station available for their members at a lower price.

My only complain is why they do not accept visa, I for one get charged for transactions on my debit card!

I was a long-term Costco customer in Chicago and then transferred my membership to Canada.  The Canadian stores are similar to those in the US, for the most part.  Of course, prices are more, even after currency conversion, and there is no booze, wine or beer (Illinois allows these to be sold by any food merchant) but mostly it's the same stuff.

Don't go expecting an enormous variety of choices.  Their stores are big because of the breadth of categories and because of the amount of inventory, not because of depth of selection in any category.

Another thing to remember is not to be intimidated by what seem like long lines - they are not actually that long as folks buy a lot of large clunky stuff which makes the line stretch out.

As for service here, the checkers are excellent - much better than the ones at my former Chicago Costco.  Very friendly and helpful.  I'd like to see the folks at the Pharmacy have a bit more command of English however.

Also, be aware that they have a lot more online offerings if you join.  It's good for electronics and computers assuming they happen to carry what you are looking for.  Furniture, however, even the more expensive stuff, generally looks a bit off or cheesy.

As for the food, look for bargains on cheese, yoghurt and other dairy items.  Ignore the produce - you can generally buy it both cheaper and better at local product markets.  Their frozen pasta is very good.  Costco always has excellent meat, especially beef.  Another recommendation is their sheet cakes, which are quite good, very reasonable and only require a one-day turnaround for decoration.

Remember that they don't take Visa or Mastercard.  Bring cash, a debit card or American Express.

Costco is great. Of course, you need a car and either self-control or money in your bank account, cause the portions are huge and they don't take normal credit cards.

Good things to get at Costco: The meats, beverages (except, of course, alcohol, in Canada. boohoo), cheese, snack foods, cleaning and paper products.  All are much better priced and equal quality to your regular supermarket.

Things I don't get at Costco: veggies or fruits. For one thing, you have to buy way too many for a small household, and for another, I am quite sure they are fresher elsewhere.

Don't trust the store hours. According to the website, and the sign on the door, this Costco was not supposed to open until 10am, but when we got there at 9:45, they were open.

This particular Costco is pretty well organized, although today there was one worker who seemed a little crazy and who kept plowing through the back section of the store on one of those mini-tractor things. He scared me. The check-out people are AMAZING. They have one person scanning everything so quickly it's crazy and a teammate loading the cart back up. Very efficient.

I'm not too sure why no one has reviewed Costco that much.  To be honest, I LOVE Costco.  But yes, you will need a car and a membership (or go with someone who does).

I thought Costco was only if you had kids because everything is in bulk.  I do a lot of shopping with my husband and it's just the two of us in a small (under 750 square feet) condo.

    Things I love about Costco:

    - Bulk freezable items.  For meats, just portion them off in smaller freezer bags and freeze them.  The prices for boneless chicken breasts are ridiculously cheap.  If you're a big smoothie fan, buy their huge bags of frozen fruits.

    - They're cook books!  They have a good selection of cook books for cheaper prices.  They're even cheaper than online as you don't have to pay a shipping fee.  I've become a bit addicted to buying my cook books from there, I've bought 6 from them already.  The books range from lesser known authors to Martha Stewart, Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver, and right now they've got Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking there for $27.

    - Special deals/promotions.  Every week they have promotions like every other grocery store, but sometimes they'll have people in like Vitamix and they give store specials.

    - High end items.  You can sometimes find Miele vaccuums there and there are always high end cheeses available for cheaper and you get more.

    - Generous return policy.  If you don't like it, return it.  If you don't like Costco, you can get a refund on your membership at any time.

    Things I don't like:

    - Frequent rotating stock.  Did you grab a cheese you really liked and want to go back for more?  It might not be there again.  Same with the cookbooks.  Items you see may not always be there when you go there again so the store has cleverly put you in a position to "buy now".

    - Not enough organic stuff

Overall, it's definitely worth it to check it out if you can.

It's not that I'm against the underlying premise of Costco--buying cheaper in bulk. It's just that, without a huge family and a huge car to haul them and all their crap in, I don't have much use for a five-gallon drum of Pine-Sol and all the other oversized quantities Costco sells. So it doesn't make sense for me to get a membership (yeah, you gotta pay to get in) for something that's not in my demographic.

Anyway, I was here the other day helping a friend buy a NordicTrack elliptical trainer. It was a good deal at around $900, but it weighed a ton; and I was the one doing a fair amount of the heavy lifting. The supplied dolly was just barely big enough to hold it, and while an employee helped us get it on it in the warehouse, we were on our own for hefting it into the back of the van in the parking lot.

Monica said it all.  But here is what I will add to her list of awesome things to buy at Costco:

    Pellegrino
    Starbucks Frappacino
    diapers
    wipes
    parmagiano reggiano
    gruyere
    Williams-Sonoma cookbooks
    biodegradable laundry detergent
Dim sum (only available 4 time a year) Sui Mai and Ha Gow is the best (according to my meat eating husband)
Roomba (robotic vacuum cleaner, I no longer get into fights with the husband over who has to vacuum!)
    Electronics (SD cards and cameras)

I actually never buy baby products from Costco as my baby does not use disposable diapers or wipes and I have made very good use out of my membership.

If you host a lot of parties, this is the place to go.

Just keep in mind that they only accept cash, debit or American Express.  You have to show your coupons BEFORE the cashier rings in your purchases.  Be patient as there is always a line, and they have odd hours.
