Vancouver, BC
Not surprised by these ratings, but still went, why, b/c it's convenient and nice to find free parking for once on Cambie, lol.
Went there early morning as it opens 8am, surprisingly. within an hour, it was half full!
Just ordered some oatmeal, came w/ a drink, for just $5. But most of the menu seemed reasonable, typical for HK-style food but considering the area, impressive.
I'll still be back just for the quieter nature compared to Gouchester a few blocks down north on Cambie. Nice here, comfortable seating, and a good place to work in the morning.
Though can't compliment on their service, just no smiles ;( -

The food & the service is equally bad.
I rarely get disappointed but this place as worse as it gets for chinese food.
The vermicelli that came with beef had loads of oil, and the beef was very hard to break apart when chewed. The bacon and the eggs were covered in a shiny coat of oil. I got a stomachache shortly after the meal. There was so much oil that my intestinal system can't handle it.
The service? The waiter & waitresses had really lousy attitude towards its customers. I felt intimidated by their service, with complete lack of respect. They were not passionate, caring, considerate servers that you'd see at a typical chinese cafe/restaurant. (I've been to a lot in the lower mainland, and this is probably the worst place to encounter this) They were middle-aged ladies who gave customers the feeling of being inferior.
I would not recommend this place to ANYONE and certainly not returning. -

For the most part, our family goes to HK cafes as a compromise - older folks wanting Western food with a Chinese flair. For this purpose, Copa does alright! Service is quick and efficient. I don't think you really come to these places to have friendly chats with your server.
If you want all your dishes to come out at the same time, excellent service, and your steak cooked perfectly the way you want it, you're lookin' at the wrong place. For decent "Hongcouver" food, it serves the right purpose, and the seating is pretty comfortable. Personally my biggest con is the veggies which do taste of the previously frozen, cheap, variety. -
Review from Odie O.
My family are regulars, their Hong Kong tea and set meal is my favorite. Their baked seafood and rice is nice but calamari is always too chewy. Their russian borsch is great but their scallop truffle pasta made me sick later although it tasted good, it was not worth getting sick over. Service is also not that great either.

Is it just me or are the people who work here just plain mean? To be fair, I have heard from the older Cantonese generation that that's just how HK Cafe service is in the motherland. [But we're not in the motherland anymore....]
If you can take the abuse, like being ignored or just simply can't make it to Richmond, they do provide decent solid HK cafe food (although a bit pricier). Check out their breakfast and lunch menu deals if you do decide to dine at Copa. You'll get a drink with your combo meal, but not service with a smile. I'd give this place a 3 star rating, but service is consistently terrible, so I have to drop a star.
Free parking in the back, folks, but that's the highlight.Listed in: HK Cafes

Okay, unfortunately I have to downgrade this place by 1 star. Came back for more food, and my dish (satay beef with rice noodle) was WAY too salty. I had to keep my plate tilted so that all the sauce would ooze to one side. Oh, and there were weird crusties in my cold Horlicks.
The service today was a bit strange too. My friends (who ordered 1st in the group) got their food last. And by "last" I mean "20 minutes after everyone else". Our food was cold by the time their stuff showed up.
On the flip side, the roast chicken fried rice was pretty tasty. This dish I can recommend.
This place seems to be hit and miss. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did today.1 Previous Review: Show all »

mini meals. thats all you go here for. that's lunchtime and after 8PM.... get the western style food over asian style foods (exception: eel stone pot) and a "dong ling cha" -- great "pang lang zhang" (cheap tasty awesome!) HK style cafe! Don't expect outstanding service or anything though -- i'm a fair regular and they still studiously ignore me... *sigh* if only my chinese was better.

Lunch in a typical Hong Kong diner in Vancouver or should I say Hongcouver..
My Ox Tongue with tasty goooy cheese on rice was nice and lite full of flavour, my dining friend had the roasted chicken and very tasty and tender but on a bed on previously frozen veg... I hear good things about the rest of the menu so i will be back for more, the service was friendly prompt and food came as expected.. -
Review from Eva G.
The baked pork chop on rice tasted right, but the amount of gravy on top of the rice leaves much to be desired; I just wanted to swipe that ketchup bottle next to their cash register (Yes.) and squirt some on the dish.
We also had Hainanese chicken on rice, which is great, with all the juices permeating into the rice. The Singaporean fried vermicelli was good, and actually much spicier than expected.
Portions are large, and the restaurant is clean and modern. It's just a drag to go here if you do not have a car. -
Review from Andrea P.
Sooo let's just say I've given Copa Cafe a few times to redeem themselves and they have failed my standards miserably.
The first time I went there, they were having all these problems with their debit machine, wouldn't accept our Visa because our bill wasn't over a certain amount and my friend and I were basically forced to take out cash to pay which was kind of annoying. I was not impressed when they could have just accepted my Visa.
The waitresses seem to hate their job and don't look happy at all affecting the service they provide. I had to ask for water/ tea more than twice to finally get a refill. And you try to flag them down and when you finally do they give you a stink face.
The next time, I found hair in my food and I was just unhappy with my food. The food is average. They do have a nice selection of combos with HK style milk tea or HK style iced lemon tea. After my last Copa fail, I told myself I was done with this place. I'd much rather spend my money next-door at Corner 23! -
Review from Annie W.
For breakfast, this place is not bad. I believe I made a review before about their dinner menu...Dinner was decent, but their breakfast menu is much better. For $8 you can choose from a variety of western or Asian combo meals that include a drink. For that price, no one can really complain. The portions are large and I always leave happy after eating breakfast.
My brother and I started going here for breakfast a last week just because it was close and no one had the energy to cook that morning. I was surprised to see how large the portions were. I ordered congee and the bowl it came in was too big for one person. This combo also came with pan fried rice noodle rolls. By the time the rice rolls came, I was already getting full.
The food on the lunch and dinner menu is good, but you can find the same food else where for cheaper.
Parking can be a hassle around this place. Best to look for street parking in the inner streets. They do have a parking lot, but its quite small and sometimes difficult to get out of if driving a big car.Listed in: Cheap Asian Meals

Review from Larry L.
After another successful CMYE we were a hungry bunch of Yelpers looking for some grub and most importantly, bubble tea. Where to go, what to choose, What is still open after 10pm?
Gloucester Cafe was one choice, but sadly they didn't have bubble tea. Copa cafe was it. Thanks to the quick witted decision of Simon K and Vincci L et all (funny it took all of us to try to figure out where to go next).
we made the trek from Chinatown to Cambie for the Copa Cafe.
What? They close at 11 and it's 10:45 now? Yikes! Order fast and eat fast! The past reviews of this place all said it was pretty slow and the service was,,,meh at best. Well, tonight, it was quick. CHOP CHOP!!
We got our food faster than you could say "her name was Lola she was a show girl" (In Chinese).
Trying to navigate a Hong Kong Cafe menu in a minute and ordering it in less than that is a true test of skill and HK food knowledge. Don't forget about the drink. what kind, hot or cold, pearls or Jelly? Did you want soup? Cream or Borscht? OMG Decisions!! try defusing a bomb in less time than that and you'll know the stress we all suffered.
But not to worry, it was fun and they fit us in and we got our bellies filled.
My dish, the Ma po tofu was, average. I hate to say it. but It could have been a rushed dish that made it, just ok.
I have to say one thing. The prices are AMAZING like Captain Marvel. My meal with drink was under $7.00. Beat that price at McDonalds baby!
The place is new, it's clean and the staff was attentive that night.
I'll have to come again and see how it is the next time.
Maybe I can get a 10% off discount card for being Asian?
Gotta try....
And to the folks at Copa, We'll be back! -
Review from Vincci L.
Never, ever been so pressured to order food. Ever.
We came here after the CMYE hoping to grab some late night eats and some BBT. We arrived at 10:45pm, and apparently now they close at 11:00pm. The waitress came to us and reiterated that fact, but she didn't say that she couldn't accept us. We would have been fine if she told us that she couldn't accomodate us. Anyhow, upon seating, within 5 seconds, she hounded us to order. I had just taken off my jacket and didn't even get to look at the menu yet!
I had to do the quickest scan through (maybe like for 3 seconds) and I needed to decide what I wanted. I decided on a unagi stone bowl rice, because the picture of it on their menu looked good. Got a taro BBT as well. She then hounded the others to order, like NOW. It was like playing Jeopardy, where you only had a certain amount of time to give them your answer. It was intense.
Food came out within 5 minutes, and my sizzling hot bowl was, very hot and sizzling like crazy. It took about ten minutes before I could take my first bite. Hmm. One piece of unagi on a bowl of rice. Not too impressed.
Taro BBT was ok, a little bit too powdery.
Quickest meal at a HK style cafe ever.Listed in: Bibimbap Crazy!

Came here last nite with some of the crew. It was around 10:30pm when we entered and we were quickly notified that they were at last call for food. Hm. Guess they've changed their hours. The stressed looking waitress rushed us through our orders (though I'm thankful they took us in at all) and within minutes we had hot piping bowls (or in Vincci's case, sizzling) of HK eats. Simon called it the new fast food! So true. The food looked great for the price, but our bubble teas took a long time to make... and then they informed us that they were out of pearls. We were all ok to have coconut jelly as a substitute but the teas were all powdered and meh. The service was bad but that could be just because we were rushed.
But I had a blast with the peeps anyway! -

Not sure what it is about the service in Chinese Restaurants in Vancouver BC. I went to 3 Chinese Restaurants last weekend up there. And, the service was not good.
For Copa, the traditional chicken soup was the best! The food was ok! The service was just bad! Was it because I don't speak Cantonese? Or, was it because they assume Asian tip badly? I am really disappointed!
I should have listened to my friend tipped 10% instead 15% for lunch since the service was that bad! -
Review from Simon K.
For HK Cafe style restaurants in Vancouver, I rate this one pretty high, and good competition for Gloucester's down the street. The place itself feels more new age than the latter, and has got way more parking, in terms of back lot, and free street parking.
Sometimes the service here is lacking, but the food itself is pretty good, especially there cheap menu, with lots of selection. You can honestly get by with $10, and that will include the meal, the drink and the tip at times. I find that there fried rice is really good.
They also just play 103.5 music when your sitting there. So it's quite relaxing, not too bright, and nice and spacious. They are only open till 1:00 AM most nights, but it also seems like this place is never too busy, or loud, which is great.Listed in: HK Cafe's in the GVR

This nouveau Hong Kong-style cafe sits in the south end of Cambie village. Food, not bad, service was prompt and effecient (but only because they wanted us in and out because they were closing).
I had the curried beef brisket on rice with was a sold 3.5 our of 5 stars in my book (better at Mui Garden on 28th and Main, but you can read about that later).
We came here after HRH Cyndi H's official CMYE at The Brickyard (see my review). It was clean, cool layout and full of young Asian folks. Personally I like to see a lot of Asians in my HK style cafe's, not only to satiate the fetish but as a mark of some good food.
I can safely say the food is pretty good. Not the best I've had in Vancouver, but solidly decent.
Anyways, this makes my list of places for curried beef brisket on rice in Van.Listed in: Curried Beef Brisket

We came here because we were craving for soup noodles and milk tea.
Lady #1 assigned us our table but DID NOT give us the menu. We had to walk over to grab two for ourselves. (Minus customer service right here!)
We were ready to order but Lady #1 decides that she is going to move her car to a different parking spot so she left the restaurant for that. We waited for over 10 minutes for Lady #2 (who seemed like the boss) to take our order but she seemed like she was in a bad mood and ignored us for the longest time, probably she was waiting for Lady #1 to come back, or maybe because we didn't speak Chinese to them.
Lady #2 finally drags herself to our table and took our order in a very rude manner. Lady #1 comes back and yells to Lady #2 "I JUST BOUGHT A LOTTERY TICKETt!!". -- Excuse me, but shouldn't you be serving your clients instead of slacking off?"
The food is decent with a reasonable price but customer service sucks.
If you want to go to Copa Cafe, I highly recommend the one in Coquitlam by Coquitlam Centre instead. They are nicer and more useful. =) -
Review from Andrew C.
The food was a little blahzy blah. Nothing really special. Typical Hongcouver food. It was crowded when we went. The service is a bit strange since our meals came out at different times. So we ended up staring at each other while waiting for food.

I've been here a few times and the service has always been indifferent at best, and downright surly at worst. Today I ordered the usual baked pork chop on rice with a friend and it took about 10 minutes longer than my friend's fried rice dish to come out. No surprises with the food, the pork chop was ok, but the rice was lacking in the fried egg and veggies that other places use in their recipes. So much for their 'Gold Medal Pork Chop on Rice'. The other dishes I've had here before were average.
What really did it today was this - when the bill came I put my cash down and waited 5 minutes for someone to get change. Nobody bothered to, even after passing by several times, so I had to hand it to them. When it came back they had actually rounded down instead of giving exact change. On top of that they gave me the largest denomination possible so I could not break it up. I've seen places round up the change before, but rounding down is akin to my previous #1 pet peeve about restaurant bills - assuming they can keep the change without my saying so - which has now been replaced by these cheap tactics designed to extract as much from you as possible for lousy service. -

I think it sucks that Yelp doesn't let you give half stars, because I'd give Copa 3.5. 4 is a bit high but 3 is too low. Copa is pretty solid, but really I only order 2 dishes and they are all you need. Portuguese Chicken Baked Rice and Thai Chicken Fried Rice. The staff has pretty bad attitude but it's pretty much the same in all Asian restaurants so it never shocks me. The only thing that deters me from coming here more often is the lack of parking; if you try to come here for lunch, you basically have to circle a few times in lots of traffic before getting a spot. And don't try to park in the residential, they're always giving out tickets.

Been here a couple of times as it's the favourite HK cafe of a few of my family members. Down the street from Gloucester, it's in a convenient location and is open until 1AM. Like its rival, Copa is more 'upscale' than your typical HK cafe with its fancy interior and the prices to match. However, the quality and portions are pretty good (again, like Gloucester) and I've yet to be disappointed.
On my last visit, I finally sampled their 'house special' baked pork chop on rice - my standard HK cafe dish and my litmus test for HK cafes. It was about $8 late-night and it's $0.50 extra for a cold drink and $1 more if you want the extra-large drink (which is only slightly bigger than the standard glass). Yup - again, even the annoying drink pricing is exactly like Gloucester.
I didn't see why this dish was a 'house special' but the baked pork chop on rice was pretty good - tasty sauce and plenty of baked cheese and mushrooms. However, the pork chop was a bit weird to me as it wasn't deep-fried like most places - the pork chop was juicy, but I missed the deep-fried goodness.
The service was so-so on my last visit as the waitress was busy chatting with a table of her friends but it is usually pretty good. When the bill came, there was a coupon for free lobster bisque on the next visit I spent $10 or more - and they apparently have a location in Coquitlam.
Overall, a decent and consistent HK cafe with solid quality and portions - it's a wee bit pricier due to the fancy decor... exactly like (say it with me!) Gloucester. Not the worst formula to copy but not anything outstanding either. -

A co-worker & I were on training today at 25th & Cambie and really this was our only choice for lunch - quick & in walking distance, so we had a wander in. We looked at the menu briefly outside & I didn't want to go as I wasn't in the mood for Asian, plus, it was totally packed! But looking around Cambie we decided this was it or nothing! There was a mostly - ok 99% Asian clientele. When I got home today I had to google the restaurant because I couldn't understand what the food was about!!! Hong Kong cafes? I guess I don't get out much! lol.
When we walked in, I was surprised how BIG everyones dishes looked, and they looked good too! When we started to look at the menu, I guess that's what I didn't understand as it was a mix of Asian & Italian? Asian & Thai? Asian & Portugese? Asian & American/Canadian? Anyway, there were way too many choices to look at and I changed my mind about 5 times! I really wasn't in the mood for Asian so I ordered pork chop with mushroom sauce & linguine and I was very leery about doing that. My friend ordered Minced pork with Thai fried rice. Both were $7.95 each and included a drink. But before the drink we got hot tea in large water glasses to start.
It was pretty darn good. I got an ok pork chop with a great mushroom sauce - almost a white gravy, good linguine & a side of vegetables which was broccoli & baby carrots. My friends dish was super spicy & really quite tasty. The only thing was is I got my dish way before my friend was served his and that was a little uncomfortable but I eat way slower than him anyway so it wasn't a bad thing really. After tax, bill was $16.50 or so. We have another day left of training & I'm actually looking forward to going back & trying something different tomorrow!
Went back again today & I had the Baked seafood casserole with linguine. It had shrimp, scallops, squid, white fish & fake pollock crab but was actually pretty good. My friend had a spicy black bean beef over fried noodles. He said it was also good. After reading about what Hong Kong cafes are about - their take on western foods, it was easier looking at the menu. I have to admit I was really kind of put off by it yesterday! -

Stumbled upon this place after warming up in the conservatory in QE Park. After being seated by the glum looking waitress we were then overwhelmed by the amount of choice on the menu. It's nice to have options but halving the menu would still provide plenty. Anyway, the four of us eventually decided and soon one order arrived. After five minutes the rest came. Apparently, this is common here.
The food itself was pretty tasty. Curried chicken, pepper beef on fried noodles, prawns with egg on noodles and won ton soup were all liked. The portions were generous and so doggy bags were required. This resulted in some styrofoam containers being plonked on the table and some DIY packing up. I've never experienced this before and it provided some amusement but still seemed somewhat lazy.
If I was hungry and in the area I would go back for the food but maybe get takeout as the staff seem to really not like working there. -

We've been here twice for lunch - Canada Line makes it easy for me and my office mates to venture out of the downtown core.
I will agree that service is OK and it is clean (but I wonder if, it survives long enough, it will start to collect a bit more grime that place like this tend of when they're either too busy or cheap to properly undertake regular cleaning and maintenance). We all tried different rice or noodle dishes for variety's sake. I like a bit of spice and tried the "Fried Kiteow in Malaysian Style". The translation leaves a bit to be desired as did the dish. Flavourless and missing some key ingredients. Heck, there's even a wikipedia page on this signature dish:
http://en.wikipedia.or...
Next time, I tried rice in a stone bowl. It's a nice dish, especially for the winter, when well executed. Again, flavourless. No spice, no salt, nothing. Adding hot sauce only made it taste like hot sauce.
There are far better options - for stone bowl, we liked the place atop HMart at Robson & Seymour. Banana Leaf (various locations) makes a pretty tasty Char Kway Teow that blow away Copa's weak rendition. -

I had never heard of Copa Cafe but a friend works nearby and I find the Hong Kong-style cafe food fascinating. We stopped by for lunch and I loved it. The baked seafood casserole had scallops, fish, mussels and a "lobster" sauce over linguine. Very decent indeed. The choices are endless and the decor is pleasant enough. The Japanese-style breaded pork chop on rice with egg was really tasty, too. Just imagine what delights are awaiting me.
Reasonable prices, good food, fast and pleasant service...what's not to like. I'm definitely a fan....and will be back. -

My family just got off the ferry from Vancouver Island and wanted to find a restaurant that opened late. So we decided to stop by Copa Cafe.
I ordered the braised beef with chow fun noodles. The meat was AMAZING and the BROWN brothy sauce they added was TO DIE FOR.
My daughter had the THAI fried rice. That was 100% addicting. I couldn't stop eating it.
Also avoid the novelty of the CHICKEN/PORK/SHRIMP bowls. My spouse and children ordered that and it was average at best.
I am HAPPY that I encountered this place in BC. This will be my BEST 2009 food encounter in my memory.

Great food, better service than most other HK-style restaurants, and much much cleaner than your average Asian eatery.
We go there frequently and so far, our faves are any of the fried rice dishes, as well as the tomato or portuguese sauce pastas. The fried rice noodles have been great, but have also been bland a couple times. Not a fan of the soup noodle bowls. We've either had overly salty bowls or flavourless bowls, never a decent one. Their stone pot bowls are tasty but small. The kids meal is HUGE; definitely enough for a full meal-sized doggy bag.
Great value - the regular menus have huge portions, mini menu (afternoon or late night only) has great prices ($6.95+ with hot drink). We've sent food back a couple times - once there was a fly (ew, I know - but only once!), another time they didn't leave out something we asked for - and both times, they were apologetic and gave us a full new plate of food. -
Review from Carmina B.
Came here with my extended family for a weekend breakfast. Beware of the macaroni soup. The greens (bok choi) are not washed as dead plant insects, wings and all were found in our food. I got the sausage and egg combo with toast. The eggs that were ordered sunny side up were overcooked. When I happened to flip it on its underside, grey residue from what appears from a dirty grill appeared. By then I had entirely lost my appetite. If you're seeking low quality, MSG and sugar in your meal, this is the place to be...

I thought I would check this place out since it's on my way home from the King Ed. sky train. Definitely one of the weirdest restaurants I have been to. The service was kind of slow, and we had to holla at anyone to get anything, which is frustrating. I ordered Won Ton Soup because it was the only thing on the menu that I felt comfortable ordering, and I do enjoy a good Won Ton Soup. My friend had ordered a sandwich and salad, and when he got it he didn't even touch the salad. It was covered in a thick mayo that at first glance we thought may have been a whipping cream, but was not. And his sandwich also had a generous coating of mayo on whatever it was that he had ordered and looked revolting. Don't think I would be going back to this place any time soon.

I rate restaurants more on the food side rather than the service side (service is bitchy btw). With that said, the food is excellent, baked pork chop rice, baked beef tongue rice, macau style pork bun, and even their fries are excellent. This is a more upscale hk style cafe, so expect about 10 bucks a pop. On food alone, it's probably the best hk cafe out there. I would put this joint on a plaza instead of on cambie.
