I wanted to come here more than once before I wrote my review since some of my friends have given them a less than stellar review.  I've been here twice now and I was not disappointed in any way.

On both occasions the food was spot-on delicious.  I've tried the Short Ribs with Risotto (melt in your mouth!) and last night had the Pistachio Crusted Grouper - oh soooo good!  Hubby had their "Farm Grill" which consisted of a bleu cheese crusted beef tenderloin medallion, a maple/mustard/pretzel crusted pork tenderloin medallion, and a parmesan crusted lamb chop.  He said it was amazing and the lamb chop was his fave.  Both our meals last night came with mashed potatoes and asparagus - you can't go wrong with those.  If you are wanting something special to start the meal I would skip the appetizers (though they have some good ones) and get the lobster bisque.  A creamy bowl of heaven.  Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the warm pretzel bread they bring to the table.  It doesn't even need butter it is so good!

I've enjoyed several of their wines and all have been very good.  Last time I had the white wine flight and last night I tried the Winemaker's Barrel Reserve - a wonderful red wine blend.

Both times the servers and entire staff were quite friendly & helpful, offering suggestions as needed.  The only reason I didn't give them 5-Stars is because of their little store area when you first enter the building.  I find it annoying and unnecessary.  I expect and enjoy the general store when I'm going to Cracker Barrel, but not when I'm going to a high-end restaurant.

The food and sweet/sparkling wine selection is just okay.  The stars here are the reds and whites.

The staff is pleasant but usually slow and not necessarily knowledgeable.  If you order a flight of anything make sure they have placed it on the table correctly and have given you the correct order.  Sadly, this has been a problem more than once.  I don't know enough about wine to distinguish different reds for each other right away so imagine my disappointment when I have to send the whole thing back because I don't think they got it right.  I'm learning but I expect the staff to KNOW.

I like their wine club for the discounts and monthly bottles of wine but I don't make eating or drinking in the actual restaurant a priority.

I have not had a chance to try their food yet but I had a good time doing 2 wine tasting flights back to back. The service at the wine bar was sufficient and informative. We ended up buying a rather expensive bottle of dessert wine that just sits in our cupboard.

This is just a preliminary review and I hope to try eating here with paired wines in the near future. Hopefully they can justify the prices that I saw on their menu.

Went for a late lunch with a large family party, 16 people, so we had a private party room.  Good thing with 6 little kids running around.
I'm not a wine drinker, at least when my kids are around, and by no means any level of knowledgeable about wine, and supposedly wine is Cooper's big deal.
Appetizers were pretty good, a wide assortment were ordered for the table.
I was not terribly impressed with the tenderloin sandwich.  Fries were cold; always a risk with a large party order, when a place waits for all orders to be ready at the same time.
The short ribs & grouper were raved about.
    Didn't get dessert.
Probably wouldn't be a regular type of place for me and the immediate family.

I guess this place is known for the wine, huh? It can't be for the food. I ordered one of the chicken dishes, made with panko bread crumbs, tomatoes, basil, and a lemon butter sauce. It doesn't seem like you could mess up those ingredients, but somehow they did.

When I first tasted my entree, there was this strange, bitter, metallic taste in each bite. I couldn't really tell if it was supposed to be like that, so I ate a little bit of it before pushing it away in disgust. Then I had my husband try a bite just to see it if I was imagining things, and he could barely swallow, it tasted so bad.

I have never had that happen to me at any restaurant, let alone one that is fairly pricey for the small portions of food. Sorry, I can never go there again. They did take the entree off of our bill, but going back there would just remind me of how terrible that dish was.

    My wife is crazy about this place.  Although I too enjoy going here, the food just tastes bland to me.  Don't get me wrong it's a great atmosphere, awesome wines, it's just that the food is as exciting as Chili's, Applebees, etc;

Not a die-hard fan but they will still get my business....

After the horrible experience trying to get reservations before I can say that when we actually got to eat at Cooper's Hawk is was a nice meal.

    Pro:
Bar Staff is very nice - we stopped for a drink since we were early
    Waitress knew her stuff
Everyone including the floor managers were helping out
The tuna - Hubby loved it, the Lettuce Wraps - I loved those and the pretzel bread

    Cons:
Walking into the bar/gift shop is annoying.  It's like a high class Cracker Barrel
The restaurant is small - no wonder it is hard to get a reservation
The Gnoochi - one word, Meh
They have those annoying half circle booths, I can't stand those and of corse we sat at one

My husband and I just discovered Cooper's Hawk about six months ago and we really like this place!  They have a great selection of wine (both reds and whites).  The food is great too and since I'm a vegetarian, I was impressed with the many delicious vegetarian options they have to offer!  My favorite is the gnocci pomodoro and the pretzel bread they bring out is soooooo good!

As for reservations, make them in advance!  This location fills up quickly so it's best to make a reservation at least a week or two out for a Fri or Sat night (earlier if you have a larger group).  Even with your reservation, be sure to get there 15-20 minutes before it so you actually get seated at your reservation time (you shouldn't expect to arrive right at your reservation time and get seated - once we waited for 30 minutes).  If you call the week of, the only times available for Fri or Sat will be before 5pm or after 9pm.  They do take walk-ins but the wait can be up to an hour or more.  If you do find yourself waiting around, what's great is that while you are waiting, you can do some wine tasting (which definitely helps the wait go by faster!).

Planning in advance for this place is key.  Otherwise, it's a great experience, with delicious food and wine, and good service.

Coops, ohhh coops...you've started to disappoint me. I've been a loyal fan for years and my past couple experiences have been less than spectacular. Alas, I won't give up on you just yet!

Typically, the food is fairly good. Although I think it's a little pricey for what you get. They have great burgers and sandwiches, tasty pasta dishes, and a variety of really good salads.

    Pros -
    - Large menu with many choices. Steak, salad, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, chicken, seafood. You name it, they have it.
    - Paired wine and food
    - Wine sampling
    - A small wine store to buy booze on your way out
    - Fantastic deserts
    - Great ambiance
    - Killer complimentary pretzel bread
    - Complimentary chocolate covered strawberries & truffles on your birthday - woot!
    - Great for a date (A first for mine and my bf - awwwwwwwww!)

    Cons-
    - Slow service. Be prepared to sit and drink for a while. (I suppose that's not a bad thing though!)
    - TERRIBLE service. The servers seem to run around frantically, but somehow I've never been able to find mine. Water is slow on refills. The servers don't seem knowledgeable about their menu
    - Last time the gnocchi were overcooked. The time after that, it was my shortribs. Major disappointment
    - Portions appear to get smaller - yet prices get higher.

Overall, my last few experiences have brought my rating from a 5-star to a 3-star. I'm hoping with a couple more visits, I'll get to write an update with better comments and a higher rating.

Wife and I frequent the South Barrington Cooper's Hawk. We enjoy the casual atmosphere. Sunday's dinner was equally as good. The warm pretzel bread is always tasty. Had intentions of having dessert so we skipped the appetizers and went directly to the chicken piccata and Dana's Parmesan crusted chicken. Portions are relatively big and as you may guess, after coffee had no desire for dessert. Maybe next time. Our server was polite and attentive without too many interruptions. There is another new Cooper's Hawk in Rolling Meadows which we would like to try. Prices are moderate and wine list is encouraging.

I am updating my review for this Fine Dining establishment.

After my initial experience I was contacted by Matteo the GM and he handle the situation extremely professionally, and eased my concerns regarding the service.

Due to unforeseen circumstances our party size was reduced to four instead of eight and my wife and I were able to secure reservations on short notice to dine on Friday the 27th of January. (when I say short notice, I mean the Wednesday before)

From start to finish, I just want to tell you that our experience was stellar! The ambience, the service and the food were spectacular! The reason I gave only 4 stars was because Brad our server wasnt quite sure where the Walleye on special originated from and when it was delivered to the restaurant. Also,  although my entree was cooked to near perfection, my Walleye was a tad under seasoned. I believe that the food should come to the table ready to eat. I shouldn't have to add anything to it.  Other than that... PERFECT !!!

In saying that, I would also like to give a special mention regarding our server Brad. Although he was initially a little slow getting to the table he was pleasant,  knowledgeable on the wines and the parings with menu items, and in fact accomplished something that I have been trying to do for years, and that's find a glass of wine, that my wife actually enjoys drinking. (we bought a bottle on our way out!!) Restaurants should have their staffs set the bar based on his level of service.

All in all our dining experience was near perfect, regardless of the initial faux pas.

Lastly, we went in under reservations that the GM nor anyone at the restaurant knew we were coming in. We did this intentionally, because we did not want to receive any preferential treatment whatsoever. We wanted our meal and service to uninfluenced !! Based on this meal we cant wait to be back !!

Really surprised to read about all the negative comments about the service and wait times for food. I've been here multiple times, during the week and Friday/Saturday nights, and have been nothing but impressed with the service and food.

Wine Tasting before dinner are a great way to get the night started as well as a good way to kill some time because you will usually have to wait around a half hour for a table.

The food is delicious and I've never tried anything I was disappointed with.

One time my steak was a bit over done, the waiter happily brought my filet back to the kitchen, brought me out a new one and the manager came out and gave me coupons for some cash off my next meal. Mistakes happen especially in a busy restaurant and they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable.

I highly recommend the Trio Medallions. Easily my favorite item on the menu. The prices are obviously a bit higher, but you expect that going in. Great place, will continue to come back.

At last we made it! Been trying for over a year to get in here, but the wait is always ridiculous and reservations are booked up more than a week or two in advance for a Saturday and we don't plan that far ahead.

Finally, I thought of it in advance enough and opted for a Sunday dinner. Place was full. Atmosphere was special occasion but casual. Saltimboca and Madeira chicken entrees were delish!

We're NOT wine enthusiasts, so ordering a $9 glass of wine is usually more gamble than we want to try. But the servers can help you choose and even allow two samples before committing to a full glass, which was a pleasant surprise so you can order with confidence and find something you like!

Only reason for not 5 stars, was so hard to get in for a Saturday dinner without major advance planning. Definitely not an impromptu dinner out.

The last time I went here about six months ago, I hated the gluten-free bread. I was angry with the changes they were making with the gluten-free menu, and I canceled my wine club membership.

My mom and I went here during the holidays because it has become her new favorite restaurant, and being the good daughter I am, I gladly joined here.

I must say, the food is better, but still not the best. I got to eat my bread before my meal arrived which was good. I ordered the Zin Burger because I wanted to test out the gluten-free bun. The bun was too soggy and broke apart as I ate the burger. I miss the old buns from last year. Those buns were sturdy and tasted good. The burger itself was delicious; however, I want the whole burger experience. I don't really get that anywhere, and this restaurant was no exception.

The wine is good, and the chocolate covered strawberries are good. If you are near the area, and feel like drinking wine, come on over! If you want good service, come here! If you want soggy gluten-free buns, come here!

Food is really good and the reserve wine from the barrel is always a treat. We enjoy going to dinner here regularly with our entire family. We have 2 small children and they place is very accommodating to kids. One downside is the wait time. If you go on a Saturday, no matter what the time is and if you have a reservation, expect to wait.

Went here for a wine tasting only.   It was a pleasant experience, but very crowded on a Saturday at 5pm.  Wines were great, got to try 8 varieties, they had 2 tasting menus to choose and they would graciously swap in a taste of your choice if you preferred over one on that day's offering.  Service was friendly.  Tasting was $7.00/person.

Excellent food!  I am not a drinker, so I did not have any "tastings."  But my friends did, and they all liked what they had.  We ate lunch, and I had the half chicken salad sandwich croissant, with the house salad and fruit.  Delicious!!

But the main thing I want to mention is that the hostess seated us (and other early-arriving groups) SPREAD OUT through the restaurant, rather than clustering us all close together at our tables.  This was wonderful.  So many restaurants do this "cramming" thing where, no matter how empty the place is, they will seat everyone all close up at adjoining tables, even when there's plenty of room to spread groups out around the restaurant at other tables.  But Cooper's Hawk did it right!!

I went to Cooper's Hawk with some friends over the weekend. I wasn't really sure what to expect. The parking lot was packed....cr@p!!! Its gonna be a while. When you walk in the restaurant, it is overwhelming. A wine bar exists to the left and to the right with all kinds of things for sale in-between. I slowly drift  towards the larger wine bar to the right when my wife spots the hostess station and tells me to focus.....

Ok, our party of 4 is on the list and it will be 45 minutes. Thats fine, the wine bar looks inviting and is packed with people. We order a bottle. (Bottles of wine in every price range 12.99 -100.00 plus.)

The wait ended up being a little over an hour (its almost 9:00 pm) but I hardly noticed. My fellow wine drinkers were extremely friendly and I was surprised by how young the crowd was. Never had any wait for a table been so enjoyable and intoxicating :)

After we were seated we were brought pretzel bread which made me very happy (or maybe it was the wine). Our waitress was on her game and we never needed anything. I ordered the seared tuna which was on the smaller side for $23.00 but was cooked perfect.

I will point out that the couple we dined with were from the city and were somewhat anti suburb. They were very impressed by the decor, crowd, and food and stated that they would be back.

I don't think you can go wrong with this place, but if your not a wine drinker, make a reservation.

I went here for a work team celebration/wine tasting.  They have good wines and we were able to taste 12 of them!  I enjoyed the overview of each wine and suggestions of what to drink it with yet the lack of cheese and real food to go along with the wine tasting was a bit disappointing.

Wine tasting was done out in the lobby area, so we couldn't order food at the bar and bring it out to eat at our wine tasting event nor could we do the wine tasting at the bar where we could eat.  :(

I hope to return to try the food this time around, since I've heard it's good.  Just an "A-Ok" for now due to lack of food provided to a group of 25 people who were tasting 12 wines...even though we were willing to purchase food (we just didn't want to leave our party to eat).

I love this place!  We moved to Hoffman Estates about 3 months ago and I've been a couple times for dinner already.

Definitely love the pretzel bread!  I'm not a bread person AT ALL.  90% of the time I pass on the bread served at restaurants altogether - it's just going to ruin my appetite for real food.  But I make an exception for pretzel bread :)

My entrees have been good so far and my husband loves the seafood bisque.  They have awesome sangria.  I hear the wine is good too... I'll get around to trying it soon I'm sure...  They will let you sample any wine you are interested in ordering, which is a nice touch.  They also host wine tastings, so I'm hoping to make it to one of those soon.

SO over it.  Over and done.  Not going back.

This place is just downright stuffy.  Get over yourself.  You're an overrated chain.  Our server this last time was a condescending jerk.  Yeah we had a gift card.  But no, we're not morons--we know to tip on the overall total...and it's totally rude of you to feel the need to school us on that.

But, most importantly, the food was tremendously disappointing.  This time my husband and I both ordered dishes that our overly cocky "veteran" server suggested.  And they sucked.  Total snooze.

We're not going back.  If we get another gift card...we're going to re-gift it.

I have been to this Cooper's Hawk location for dinner and drinks twice.

The first time was a solid three stars.  The food was ok, but our waitress was terrible and had an awful attitude.  Plus, we never saw her.

Last night, however, redeemed this restaurant for me.  We were there with a group of 8 people.  We made our reservations for 7:30, but we arrived to drink in the bar area a little earlier at 6:30.  We were called for dinner around 7.  Yay!

So we were seated in the back area at a round table with a lazy susan in the middle.  It was SO helpful.  I loved sitting there!  We ordered two appetizers--the Sweet Chili Calamari (NOT your normal calamari--it looks nothing like you're expecting it to look/taste, but it was very good) and the southwest egg rolls.

The appetizers came out, and we got the calamari and the sampler platter.  Which wasn't what we ordered.  They took that back and came out with your actual appetizer lickity split.  The eggrolls were VERY good!

We all got different kinds of meals--some got pasta, some burgers, some salad.  I got the Angel hair neopolitino (sp?) and it was very good.  I tasted my husband's jalapeno burger, and that was quite delicious as well!  I didn't really care for the fries, though.

OH, get the pretzel bread if they ask you if you want it.  It is amazing!  Between the 8 of us, we ate four loaves of it!

I got the bannoffee pie--it was good--the best part of it was the crust.  Graham cracker crusts are amazing :)

This time our service was stellar, or drinks were great (try the cranberry wine, it's delectible!) and they even served my husband's favorite beer--Matilda.

Stopped for the first time and shared bottle of the Lux Cabernet Sauvignon. DELICIOUS DELICIOUS DELICIOUS!  I'm a wine lover so I love when restaurants tell you they make all their own wine and it's actually good. Coolest looking decanter I've seen and our waiter was very helpful. We shared a cheese plate which was on the smaller side, but that worked because we didn't want anything too big. All in all I loved our wine date, and will return again, next time to enjoy the food!

Coopers Hawk is a fun restaurant that is a blend of midwest food and Napa Valley style. Six of us went for a birthday this week and the group all enjoyed the experience.

The restaurant has a wine focused menu with wine pairing suggestions next to each dish. CH is different than other wine focused places such as Bin 36 in that it only sells wine from its own production house located in Countryside, IL.

They purchase grapes from vineyards in CA, WA & OR and truck them in each fall to crush and create their wines. I would say the wines were very blended and safe meaning all of them were nice drinkers but none had any sharp defining characteristics.

The restaurant offers a variety of apps from crabcakes to potstickers to sliders to lettuce wraps and even a lobster corn dog all of which pair nicely with their wines. For main courses our group liked the mixed grill, the parmesan encrusted chicken and parmesan encusted lamb chops.

Entrees came with a vegtable and a potato the best of which was called Betty's Potatos and were shredded hash browns baked in a small baking dish with cheddar cheese and topped with breadcrumbs, tasty.

This is a family friendly wine focused mini-chain of restaurants that offer good value and fun atmosphere for a night out.

Coopers hits on every point: Amazing wine, great atmosphere both in the bar area and dining room, fantastic food, terrific service. My mom and I first came here because of an Arboretum coupon booklet that had an offer for Complimentary Wine Tasting for two. I know some people cash in these free offers and move on, but in our case this one really paid off for them! We are now Wine Club members and look forward to our monthly tastings. Sometimes we stop in just for the tasting and to pick up our two bottles, sometimes we stay for lunch. Try the steak sandwich! And the fries are just amazing. Also features a wine boutique with great gift ideas.

I'm a wine club member here and it's definitely worth it!

My boyfriend and I come here on occasion and he's a fan of the trio medallians. We recently tried their lobster bisque soup and was really impressed by it. Very rich and had great flavor! You get chunks of the lobster and crab for sure!

The viogner wine is a must-try. You get a sweet after taste without feeling like it's too much.

Service is great--the wait, not so much. If you try to call to make reservations on a Saturday night, you might as well walk in and wait because they're booked dfrom 5PM-9PM almost every weekend!

Needless to say, the place is very good.

I don't see how you can enjoy this restaurant that much unless you're a wine lover. The food there is good, but nothing that will persuade me to go back and pay the moderately expensive price. The parking and the wait time are normally bad. I guess most of their patrons (wine lovers) will take their time enjoying their wine as opposed to having a shorter meal.

    Menu (7/10)
Plenty to choose from, but nothing that's spectacular for me. Their wine selection is impressive though. If it's just rating their wine list, I'll give it 9 out of 10.

    Price (7/10)
It's a bit expensive for my taste, but I have nothing to complain about.

    Ambiance (6/10)
Too packed and the tables are too close to each other. The people there talk loudly too and they probably get louder after their second or third glass of wine. The wait time is bad but the parking is worse, unless you're willing to park far away and walk in the open mall sidewalk.

    Service (7/10)
The service is average because the waiters and waitresses have so many patrons to attend to. If the restaurant is a bit emptier, they can probably provide a better service.

    Location (10/10)
It's in the middle of Arboretum Mall at South Barrington, just 10-15 minutes from our home. We can go there whenever we want to without dealing with a single traffic. For those in the downtown area, it's gonna be quite a drive of course.

    Overall score: 7.5/10

This place is OVERRATED.  What you see on the menu is not what you get; the description of the food is awesome, but what you receive is disappointing big time.  I had the ahi tuna.  Sounded GREAT while reading it, but totally different when eating it.  It was gristly and bland. I asked for some wasabi and soy, which the waitress brought some in the ketchup ramekin. The wasabi was dark green and hard, and didn't even melt in the soy.  Out of the 9 that went, I think 2 liked their food.

I've been here several times for wine tastings and dinner. The service is always exceptional and the wine is divine. When you first enter the store there is a gift shop and a wine bar with all the varieties of wine on the back wall. If you are waiting for a table, you can shop for gifts or do a wine tasting. I love doing the wine tastings! For only $7 you get to sample eight different varieties of wines, including whites, reds and sweet wine of some kind. My favorite wines are the Zinfandel, Malbec, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz. I'm not a huge white fan, but I also really enjoy the Unoaked Chardonnay.

I've eaten in the restaurant and in the bar. Both are fabulous. One of the coolest things about the menu is that each item has a recommended wine pairing. The pairings are really spectacular. And, if you order a bottle of wine, they pour it into this really cool decanter/dispenser thing that sits on your table top and properly aerates the wine, then you put your glass under it and it dispenses it.

The service and the food have always been top-notch. One time, I ordered the salmon and I didn't like the way it was cooked but I didn't want to complain about it. I had it once before and liked it that time, but for some reason the texture seemed different. The bartender knew without me saying anything that I didn't like it, and immediately insisted that I let them re-do it for me. I felt guilty but obliged. They brought me a new one, but I was still a little turned off by the salmon. I ate all the sides that came with it (which were awesome by the way) and ate maybe a little bit of the salmon. I really didn't say anything and completely intended to pay for my meal. The bartender didn't want me to be less than completely satisfied, so she comped the whole bill. I couldn't believe it. They went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied and I was extremely impressed.

All in all I love the wine, the food, and the service. If you are less than pleased the staff will go above and beyond to make sure you leave happy. :)

This place was impressive and as of now, I have yet to find it's equal.  The thing that really sets it apart from other restaurants is the wine.  They have an entire wine shop in the restaurant.  The service was really great, the ambiance has dark and rich colors and textures and the food was simply amazing.  I grabbed the Cooper's Hawk Farm dish and it came with a few different meats that were simply deliscious!  Cocktails were made just right and the wines that I got to sample from my friends and wife were also really deliscious.  One really cool thing is that that suggest certain wines with each dish right on the menu.  Now that's awesome.  Granted, I wouldn't go with some of their suggestions but that's because of my own tastes.  If you're relatively new to wine then this will come in handy as a great starting point.

I'd strongly suggest this as a date night as it's romantically inclined...some of the tables are in more open spaces so you may want to request something in particular when you're making a reservation.  Last, you need to try some of the desserts.  Talk about tasty! We had a little stick of the Snicker's Cheesecake and a White Chocolate thing-a-mabob...can't remember what it was exactly but it was damn good.  Enjoy it!

I don't think I have ever had a bad meal at Cooper's Hawk.  And that encompasses 5 times or so being there.

While they are known for their wines, don't let that stop you from ordering a mixed drink, the bartenders are skilled and can make anything from a dirty martini to a fantastic mojitto.

The food, meats are always cooked as requested, and actually the prices are very reasonable for what you get. The lobster bisque is one of the best in the area (I've only had better in the East coast and it was marginally better - could have been purely psychological to be honest).  One of my favorite entrées is Aunt Lynns Asain Pork Chops that come with baby bock Choi and brown fried rice - YUM!  A good desert is the key-lime pie, it has a amazing crust too!

If you go a reservation will spare you from waiting a few hours at the bar, which might not be a bad thing, just depends on how thirsty/hungry you are...

My favorite restaurant in the suburbs. Amazing food, drinks and atmosphere. This location should be used by Coopers Hawk as a benchmark of excellence.
