I have to start this review with the lesson I seem to always forget:  don't judge a book by its cover, or a restaurant by its facade!  I have passed by this restaurant for YEARS.  About 11 years in total actually.  Almost daily for a while as I walked to and from work on Whyte Ave.  It didn't stand out to me and I pictured the food to be not to my taste, simple because I tend to like more exotic concoctions than I picture European food to be.  I stand corrected.  Big time.

I came to Continental Treat to meet my mother for lunch.  It was recommended to her by a friend who lived in the area so we decided, after all these years, to give it a try.  We were pleased to find they had a "Healthy Choices" menu.  We found ourselves ordering identical dishes.  We both had the healthy option Schnitzel with greek salad.

Our food arrived quickly and it was delicious.  I was very impressed with the "healthy" schnitzel and the salad was not overly dressed.  We cleaned our plates!

The service was friendly and prompt which is the one thing I absolutely expected from this place.   We will be back!  I am intrigued by the pickle soup which I hear they are famous for in the city!

The menu was a lot pricier than I expected when I walked into what was obviously a restaurant in desperate need of an update. Although their menu was extensive, upon further inspection, it was clear that they listed the same thing several times but with a different sauce (eg. filet mignon was listed 4 times).

When we got our appetizers and main (a lengthy wait for both), they were all bland and over cooked - everything from the trout to the lamb chops.

I definitely wouldn't go back for anymore flavorless food, particularly at their prices.

I have eaten here 3 times and every time the food has been fantastic and the beer menu is quite the treat compared to the macro beers you find elsewhere. The beer menu has about 90 bottles on it with a large Trappist component but sadly only two taps (Warsteiner and Koningshoeven). I am not a wine connoisseur but they have quite the wine cellar with over 100 different bottles. The food is expensive, but the beer is reasonably priced.

My last visit was for one of their beer dinners. It's $75 (which includes tax and gratuity) for a 4 course meal with 5 different paired beers (one beer served by itself as a welcome). The beer isn't incorporated into the meal, but paired as a complement to it. They also have (as they generally do in the evenings) live jazz to accompany your meal; this is a nice touch. They also have wine dinners in the same manner for the same price.

Visit the restaurant, but try not to visit the web site. It's straight outta the early 90's with repetitive music, browser incompatibilities, clickable books, and my favorite, MOUSE TRAILS. And this is the only bad thing I can say about this restaurant.

Continental treat is a bit pricey, but its worth it, you're worth it. Treat yourself sometime.

    Oh, Continental Treat.

I LOVE coming to this restaurant. It's not inexpensive, so it's an infrequent experience, but it always is, just as the name suggests, a treat.

    My order here is predictable:

I always like to start with the Pickle Soup. It's a creamy, tangy and flavourful broth loaded with potatoes, carrots and shredded pickle. The concept initially struck me as strange and unlikely to be a hit with me, but after one spoonful I realized this would be a must-have for me at this restaurant.

First, they have a great selection of European beers - I forget the name of the Polish beer I tried the last time, but it was very good.

For a main, I love to order their chicken schnitzel. It is always so thin and tender, and the crispy coating is consistently perfect. All the schnitzel needs is a little lemon juice squeezed on top - truly delicious. The schnitzel is accompanied by delicious pan-fried potatoes and yummy cabbage.

Dessert usually consists of their "Furst Puckler Torte," a layered cake containing chocolate and white sponge, lemon and strawberry buttercreams, marzipan and chocolate. Heaven on a plate and the perfect way to round out the meal.

The atmosphere is very traditional - candles, and European decor. It's cozy and intimate. It's a great place for a date or a family dinner.

I can't say enough good things about Continental Treat. In fact, writing this review has me hankering for a plate of schnitzel. Stop by the next time you are on Whyte Ave!

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was really romantic. The food was excellent too, and the cocktail I had was the best I've ever had (order a citrus sensation if you go! ).

For the meal, we started with the fried mushrooms with tartar sauce (Gebacken de Champignon). They were crispy and juicy, which was an odd but tasty combination. My boyfriend had the beef stroganoff with spaetzle and I had the Hungarian goulash with spaetzle. Both were really comforting and homey, although personally I preferred the stroganoff as the beef was more tender. The vegetable medley of beets, carrots, and red cabbage that was served with our meals left more to be desired. It was a little plain and outdated, but I also don't like beets or red cabbage, so that could be my bias.

Overall the ambiance was really romantic and intimate, and our waiter was really helpful.

I have to agree with another reviewer, this restaurant did not stand out to me on the outside at all and I never would have picked it if it wasn't recommended to me. It is very small on the inside so reservations are a must on the weekends. We just squeezed in at the last minute. The decor is horribly outdated, but it matched the food for me. The menu is basically Eastern European inspired and smelt exactly like my Oma/Baba's kitchen. So the decor from way back when fit in perfectly with the food choices. They have dill pickle soup and perogies on the menu. Where do you see perogies on a high end menu anymore? They also have a VERY extensive beer list so for any beer lover you are in your glory!

I ended up deciding on the duck which was SO good. Other then in Paris it is possibly the best duck I have had so far. It came with tiny dumplings and on top of red cabbage. The server was very nice, but the food did come out a tad slow. The entire menu looked like comfort food. Don't come here expecting to get a light meal! Most things are fried, starchy and have a lot of sauce. If that is what you are in the mood for, yum!

We first checked out this place while strolling along Whyte Ave. shortly after moving to Edmonton.  We looked at the menu int he window and saw high prices and no vegetarian options, so we didn't go there, and never considered going there.

Fast-forward a few years.  I saw an online coupon for the place and clicked through to the restaurant's website.  Lo and behold, they have an entire vegetarian menu!  And it looked pretty good.  So I snagged up the coupon, and looked forward to a trip there.

We finally dined at Continental Treat this past weekend.  We made a reservation, which was necessary since the place was full and remained so throughout the evening.  We were seated in the room with the bar, which allowed for a great view of their magnificent Belgian beer selection.  The large picture window also gave us a lovely view of Whyte Ave. and the wonderful opportunity for people watching it afforded.

But let's get to the food.  I started with the Dill Pickle Soup while my partner ordered the tomato cocktail salad.  The soup was delicious.  I wasn't expecting a creamy soup, but this was creamy, savoury, and interestingly delicious.  I really enjoyed my partner's salad - scrumptious dressing, although a tad on the salty side (and as one who LOVES salt, when I say that, I mean it was very, very salty).

For dinner, we had the funghi and spaetzel, which was outstanding, by far the best thing we ordered.  The spaetzel was cooked to perfection and the flavours of the mushroom sauce were delightful.  We also had the spinach and mushroom crepe with dill sauce.  It was quite good, but didn't hold a candle to the spaetzel.

We finished off the evening with dessert, the apple strudel and the torte.  Both were fine (I don't care for cooked raisins, so I didn't particularly like the strudel), but neither spectacular.  I wish I had ordered the creme caramel or the napoleon.

Overall, it was a very pleasant evening.  Good food, excellent service, and a non-rushed atmosphere.  It's a pricey place, so we're not likely to return often, but it's certainly a worthwhile restaurant at which to dine on those "special" occasions.

When I drove by Continental Treat for the first time, I didn't give it a second glance because it really doesn't stand out in any way.  It wasn't until I had a chance to walk past the restaurant that I noticed a sign on the door indicating they offer both vegetarian and gluten-free options.  As a vegetarian, I found this incredibly appealing.  It can be difficult to find a restaurant that caters to my dietary needs so when I see one proudly advertising it, I HAVE to try them out.

It looked like they were going to be busy so I called ahead to make a reservation and I'm glad I did.  Even on a Sunday evening, there wasn't a single free table.  I mentioned the sign on the door and our server was excited to tell us that they actually have a separate menu for vegetarians.  She went on to explain that she is vegetarian herself and recommended that I try the "French Onion Soup" and the "Funghi and Spaetzle".  My mom decided to go for both of her suggestions while I opted for the "famous" pickle soup and the "Wild Mushroom, Sauerkraut Pierogi".

In addition to their food menus, Continental Treat also offers extensive wine and beer lists (with the beer list boasting to have the largest selection of European beers in Edmonton).

Overall the service was friendly and attentive even though they were quite busy.  She made sure our wine glasses were never empty and that we were made to feel welcome.

When the food finally arrived I was slightly underwhelmed.  Had this restaurant been at a lower price point, I probably would have been able to give them an extra star.  For $22, I expected more than just 8 pierogi on a plate.  Not to say I didn't enjoy them, but I have had equally good meals for a fraction of the price.  At least the pickle soup was reasonably priced.  I will say that our server was right on her recommendations.  The Funghi and Spaetzle was delicious and I wish I'd chosen it for myself.

Overall I did enjoy the experience, but probably won't be returning to the Continental Treat anytime soon unless I come across a coupon.

I have walked by so many times just thinking it was another overprices fancy restaraunt, and then a coupon hit my screen.

Of to the Continental Treat I went, can't pass up a good deal.  Upon entering the decore and wait staff is very oldworld eruocentric.  My sandals were definately out of place, but the waiters didn't blink and eye or make me feel underdressed but promptly seated me with efficiancy.

In general the service was fantastic, now the entire place was serviced by 2 waiters when we were there and it could just be 1/2 the staff was great, but I noticed the service and for once in a long time it was in a good way.

The food was great.  With a group of 4 we managed to try quite a bit and everything was excellent.  Just a warning it is very meat and potatoes, nothing overly exotic but everything very well done.  I never new a perogie could taste that good.

BEER - yes they have beer and not just any beer but a very large selection of trappist ales.  If they had a bar I would frequent this place just for the beer, it is very well priced.

So why with all the praise only 4 stars?  Value.  Way too expensive, for 50.00/head I can get the exotic and interesting.  Don't get me wrong I will be back, but at those prices it will be to use a coupon.

Sure, yeah, This place is great. We know the owner is authentic - born and professionally trained in Europe. What are these people trained to do? They are trained on particular mannerisms, consistency, tradition, AND reusing their bread, AND using the cheapest ingredients possible (No Name Escargot), AND being nauseatingly pretentious to their staff and customers.

I must admit, I enjoyed their escargot dish, despite the fact that what I paid was 99.9999% profit. The sauce was very nice.

My friend worked here for a while and when I went to the bar to visit her one day, she was removing slices of bread from one of many bread baskets and transferring them into other baskets. I asked her about it, and she said that after they cleared the tables, they had to remove any intact bread slices and place them into the others for the next tables. (This is the complementary bread at the beginning of your meal.) YUCK!

My friend worked their for about a week, and I never returned.

    Enough said?

Sorry for the lapse in writing...work and a trip have gotten me behind in my writing....but I digress....  On May 13th, we ventured to the Continental Treat to which we haven't been since we moved here in 2003.  As always, I love the location and how the windows just open up the restaurant. There are two areas, one is the restaurant and the other has a bar to which we didn't go...MAYBE next time.  However, onward and forward with the dinner we go....
We were seated quickly as we had reservations, though I am unsure as to needing them since the restaurant seems to be a "neighbourhood" spot and the background of the people seems to be more Northern European to begin with who more than likely enjoy hearty and solid food, which is what you will get here.
On this night, I ordered the "special" since the "Beef Stroganoff" was featured and my companion ordered the Rainbow Trout.  Before I go any further however, I should mention that on the website they mention that they have a "Vegetarian" Menu (which we weren't given) and they do have a wine list (another thing we weren't given) until the waitress came and we had our questions about the menu.  Now, the Vegetarian menu I get not bringing straight away, but the Wine List?  Our waitress was very cheerful and chatted with us when she came to the table...wait, wait, I didn't tell you that we ordered an appetizer, did I?  Well, we did....it was forgotten until we mentioned it and for the entire dinner time (and even when we left) we were offered the appetizer anyway or to get "to go" since it is "amazing"....we had ordered the "Homemade Perogies".  In truth, the waitress was apologetic, so I won't be sarcastic anymore ;-]  Instead, I'll tell you about my BEEF Stroganoff....I say it in this way because, unfortunately, I was SO looking forward to having it:  Beef, mushrooms and homemade spaetzle...anyone who knows me knows I am putty in their hands with homemade noodles and saucy beef.  Tonight was not the night for me....it was more Mushroom Stroganoff, which had a wonderful flavour and the spaetzle was really well made.  The salad that came with the feature dinner was quite nice.  My companion's trout on the other hand was very good and very well prepared....tasted like lake trout :-] and it was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.
Oh, yes, we did order wine...well, champagne...they have the Henkel which is commonly referred to as " Mrs.'s " Champagne since they had a regular customer for many years who would start with one spit and then order a second....it was a cute story actually as told by our waitress.
I have to say, my  dessert was MUCH more appealing than my companion's, though his had such a description that when he got it, he was quite disappointed:  the Torte....trust me, you don't want to order it....it sounded like it was to be a huge cake and then, it is a simple layer cake...  Mine, on the other hand was quite good...the "Picrnik"...an apple spice cake which was moist and tasty (Not to be confused with the apple spice cake I had at the Wildflower Restaurant--hard as a rock).
In all, we had a pleasant evening....however, if I return, I will order something else since having read some other reviews of CT, we should give it another shot...but for now, my opinion is what it is....okay in a serious pinch, but not on my top 5 list....

A taste of mitteleuropa on Whyte Ave, Continental Treat is a reliable spot for schnitzel and goulasch.  The menu is longer and more expensive than it needs to be and the decor is terribly dated, but the schnitzel is golden, tender and never greasy. Likewise, the goulasch is rich and filling; I recommend ordering it with potato dumplings. There seem to be a number of strong opinions floating about regarding Continental Treat, but I have yet to be disappointed.

Always consistent, one of my favorite restaurants in Edmonton. I have only dined there for lunch, and get the same thing: tomato avocado salad with spicy chicken (specify), along with (the best anywhere) french onion soup. Don't let the 'dated' interior fool you, the food here is outstanding.

I want to give this 3.5 stars.  We had lunch here on a Saturday.  Excellent and attentive service, not rushed.  Server was friendly, polite, but not 'gooey bff' kind of friendly that you see in some restaurants.  We had the Weiner Schnitzel (golden and crunchy) with potato salad and the Polish Cutlet (tasty dill cream sauce) with pan fried potatoes.  Both were very good and we enjoyed the meal.  The only slight downside is the entrees for lunch are $20 which is a bit pricey, but you're paying for the very nice atmosphere, real table cloths, fresh flowers on the tables and the service.  The menu is available online including the small vegetarian section.  Our server offered us a complimentary taste of the dill pickle soup which was tasty.  It was a thin, creamy broth with potato, celery and slivers of dill pickle.

Skeptical at first but once I tasted the food I knew I was coming back. Service was excellent and prompt. Atmosphere was a little like my grandmothers house but it matches the home cooked food. The only slightly negative thing was the lack of German or polish beers..... Until I was at the payment counter and saw all the bottled selection. It was hard to decide if this was 4 or 5 stars.

If you want to get adventures and try some Polish food then Continental Treat Restaurant and Martini Bar is the place to venture to.  We've known these guys for far too long and this is the one place my family goes to for big occasions.  The Polish side of my family reserves half the restaurant to have weeding receptions at or big birthdays.  The food has been consistently great since I was a child and the servers are actually like family (actually, come to think of it, a part of them are family!).  Anyways, according to my brother this is a good place to impress a date if you can speak Polish; you can order in your native language and come off as the "international type."  If you are going to have the soup the pickle soup is really good.  The next time I go there I really want to try there French onion soup (I never liked French onion soup when I was younger so I never tried it from here).  My mom lives by the Steak Tartare (there are two sizes, small for $16.95 and the large for $22.95.  My favorite dish that I always order is the Polish Cutlet that is $22.95.  The desert menu has changed so I can't tell you which one is good.  The next time I go I will investigate!  The servers are really great and the food is delicious.  You pay for real home cooking!  The atmosphere is romantic so it's a good place to bring a date.
