Review from Christine R.

I agree with Cameron that Companion Book could have used some help in the naming department. However, in all other aspects, it rivals Pulpfiction for selection and organization of used books - plus, the store kitty is one adorable monster.
Though I normally find it hard to pass up a bookshop without going in, this one suckered me in with a sidewalk bargain table stocked with 4-for-$1 vintage teen romance novels like Sweet Valley High, Silhouette, Sweet Dreams and even the super-cheesy Caitlin series. Serious impulse control was required not to grab them all. I think I have a crush. The clerk at the counter sweetly let me swap out a couple of titles in the pack because I already had them.
As a bonus, I was also able to find a copy of Little House in the Big Woods that matched the Little House set I bought awhile back at Brown's that was missing the first book.
Thank you Companion Book, for the books of my childhood. You're my new bestest best friend.Listed in: Store pets

Have I ever mentioned how much I love book stores. And have I ever mentioned that I have a theory that all good bookstores have a cat? Have I ever mentioned that I repeat myself?
Well organised. Informative staff. Constantly moving stock. It's the kind of place you will always find something or things good.
And they have a cat.Listed in: 365-Day Challenge - Review A…, Books

Contrary to it's godawful naming, Companion Book actually carries more than one book. Quite a few indeed considering its relatively small size.
Just a few blocks from the unbeatable selection at Brown's, Companion really had a struggle on its hands to get my attention. They do have quite a lot of newer used titles, which is always something commendable in a store and the physical quality of their titles was up to snuff as well. The usual non-talkative person working, buried in a book was there too, which is fine by me. I'm always impressed with their rotating window displays though so clearly working there isn't all enjoying a book.
What really hooked me though is their entire shelf of Penguins. I'm one of those gauche people who insists on collecting vintage penguin versions of my favorite books for their cool old covers and I was overjoyed to find some rare and great little books there. A 1960s copy of Melville's 'The Confidence Man' and for less than 10 bucks. Yes please! If you're looking for something a little rare and vintage and are in the Burnaby area I'd definitely suggest checking out Companion. -

Firstly, and most importantly, they have a cat. (I am of the firm opinion that no good bookstore is without a cat.) And not just any cat. A large, friendly, fluffy cat, often found lounging near the till where it will inspect all of your purchases and trade-ins.
The selection is great, the prices reasonable, and the books are stored in a neat and in well-ordered fashion.
I would give them 5 stars, except that, in the grand tradition of surly, introverted book sellers everywhere, they never seem happy to see you. (Perhaps having customers simply impedes peaceful stretches of book reading?) -

this is one of my most favourite used book stores.... cuz they have such a wide selection of topics - particularly in the healing natural themes.... and a warm, friendly atmosphere to hang out in... love this place!!!
