For some reason I'd never noticed this restaurant until I read about it on Yelp, and I've been by the Commodore several times.

This restaurant is nothing fancy, just simple, classic comfort foods. The decor looks like it probably hasn't been changed in 50 years. This isn't a new restaurant, trying to look like a classic diner. This is a classic diner that (from what I gather) looks like its stayed the same for the last 50 years or so. Even the bill was handwritten. I haven't seen that i a restaurant since I was a kid.

I ordered a mushroom burger, fries and a can of coke. The burger was $3.50, fries were $2.50 (side items are priced separately, they don't come with the meal) and the coke was $1.35. With tax I got a simple and filling meal (I actually couldn't finish the fries) for $7.35. Word of warning - they don't accept debit or credit, just cold hard cash.

Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant isn't very large, and I have a feeling with the low prices they have that The Commodore is probably pretty busy throughout the day.

I came here on a Sunday morning with a friend. We waited near the entrance for a while before we were acknowledged. We were asked to sit wherever we liked. The place was about half full and the tables where nobody was sitting were all dirty. (Newspapers sprawled, dirty dishes etc...) We sat at the least dirty table. When people say it's nothing fancy they aren't lying. After waiting for menus for a couple minutes we weren't offered drinks to start. After quickly deciding what to eat we placed out menus near edge of table to indicate we were ready to order. After waiting yet again a couple minutes we decided to walk out. The place was clearly understaffed. I'm glad we didn't stick around to see what the food was like.  I will not be back.

As far as greasy spoons go, Commodore Restaurant delivers decent fare, both fast and cheap.  I've only been with a friend during lunch, but can see how this unassuming diner would do well during the weekends for its breakfast specials!

If I were to use two words to describe the Commodore, they would be "fast" and "cheap."

If I had three words to use, I'd throw a "friendly" in there as well.

A fast, good-quality early-morning breakfast here is always great. And the service (I'm assuming the owners run the show) is always first-rate. The last time I was here, they kept bringing me sections of the newspaper as other patrons finished with them. And my coffee was never empty or cold.

You aren't going to get gourmet eggs and bacon here - it's a greasy spoon in the truest sense, although not as greasy as all that. But the Commodore delivers on its promise: fast, cheap, and - hell yes - friendly.

Hope they're open for a very long time!

The Commodore is my go-to place for a quick, cheap breakfast downtown. It doesn't look like much, but the food is good, especially for the price, and the service is quick and very friendly. It is cash-only though.

It's also not a great place for a large group... I went there one Saturday morning with a bunch of people and we managed to just barely fit... the waitress said we were lucky we didn't come in on a Sunday morning.

I discovered the Commodore with friends after shopping at City Market last summer and have made several subsequent trips. The decor is dated, but I don't go to restaurants to be wowed by the furniture. The breakfast foods are better than the lunch items, but for $5-6 you really can't complain.

It's best to come by in groups of four or less, as it can it squishy on the weekends.  And remember to have cash on you!

The Commodore is as stark and plain as greasy spoon diners come - it's apparent lack of character is what gives it its character. If I didnt' know it were 2008, inside the Commodore I might not be able to tell what year it was, unless I picked up a newspaper or a particularly fashionable person happened to be dining there.

It's got tables and chairs, chrome and green vinyl stools at a bar counter, and the specials posted up on the wall. Coffee's $1.25 and refills are 25 cents. Two eggs, toast and hashbrowns are $3.25. It's been around 50 plus years and the servers are casual, friendly and fast on their toes. No surprise lots of regulars were here, flipping the pages of the Sun and drinking refill after refill. You can get a milkshake here for three dollars and change, a glass of juice for $1.25, Toast with jam for $1.50 and there are a bunch of hot meal specials for under $8.

The Commie's a fixture in E-town that's seen it grow and change, without changing much itself. But old-fashioned diners aren't supposed to. Cash only - just like in the olden days;)

If you are looking for an authentic, old-fashioned greasy spoon restaurant in Edmonton, head to the Commodore.  The small, sparsely-decorated and furnished eatery has been around for decades, with a menu that matches the atmosphere -- all day breakfast, burgers, entrees laden with fat and gravy.  The prices are low, the portions decent, and there seems to be a loyal crowd that hangs out here.  The bathrooms are kind of nasty (at least the last time I checked).  Bring cash, expect reasonably quick service, and visit this historical eatery.

Walking through the doors of the Commodore is like stepping into a time machine. It's kind of freaky! The classic stools at the counter remind me of milkshakes as a small child when I had to climb to sit. This place has been around since the 40's quite literally and the decor hasn't changed much since which is really cool. They don't take credit or debit cards either, only good old fashioned cash.
