It's been seven years since my first review, and the place has held up very well.  The ambiance is still the same.  Service is very casual and not always efficient, but sweet and friendly.  As others repeatedly complain, the table-side guacamole isn't table side unless you insist.  The menu seems to have simplified, for lunch at least, but all the dishes are big, filling, and tasty.  Salads are all nice, especially the jicama.  Their homemade salsa trios are good, and the green (tomatillo, no red chile)  pozole is solid.

I've probably been here a dozen times over the years, it's a solid, comfortable standby and an excellent non-touristy option for anyone going to the theaters across the street.  Every time I come my eyes are glued on the monitors where they show old black and white Mexican films with magic wrestlers, tragic damsels, and singing cowboys.

Margarita Avion: was very crisp, with herbal notes of mint and rosemary.

The Mojitos were very aromatically stimulating burst of fresh mint, and limes. And It felt like a fully encompassing experience of euphoric bliss, as I heard birds chirping, and the sound of growing foliage upon each savory sip.

Sope Surtidos: were the perfect sharing-portion for 2 people.. very flavorful shredded pork, greens, topped with creamy crumbled queso fresco.

The Ceviche Camarones served with plantain crisps wasn't as acidic as some other's I've had.. I think due to the added orange juice, mango, and tomato and you can lightly detect these flavors as you're eating it.. there was also a nice flourish of sunflower seeds to add some earthy flavor to it.

The standard tequila flight was great, and honest with a variety of: Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo.. I don't know my minority liquors that well, so I'll refrain from writing more in-depth.  On a sidenote: I made a mistake of sipping the tomato chili chaser in between, so I couldn't really taste much after.  I was perplexed by how satisfying some of the discomfort felt as I was sipping on this until the chili chaser was gone, then again I don't drink enough tequila to truly understand this phenomenon.  Our server Camilla was great though, very playful, upbeat and had a lot of great energy and charisma.

I will probably pass on the rich chocolately Mexican Coffee next time (with tequila and Kalua).. it is a bit too decadent for me, and I haven't really developed a taste for coffee with a spicy mouth/throat feel quite yet.

I am not so much a fan of when it comes to the chop and dice places like the ones located in the Mission.  However, this place is really exceptional.

Union square mexican?  I went in with low expections, they were confirmed by the end.

Most bland cheeseless chile relleno I've ever tried.

Only saving grace for this place is $10 bottomless mimosas for brunch.

If you want real mexican food--go to El Faralito on 24th and Mission.

Guac was great.  We asked for one spicy and one mild and they tasted similar.  Had to add more hot sauce to mine but the taste was good.
A bit pricy for Mexican food.  I can get similar food from a taco shop for half the price but the ambiance is what you pay for.
Looks like they have a fully stocked bar so drink up if you must.
Didn't try a margarita but they had a variety to choose from.
    Friendly and efficient service.

I have always been a fan of this place...

That is, until my last visit a few days ago.  Their table side guacamole is always something to look forward to.  Unfortunately, this is only fun when they actually make it for you table side.  This did not happen.  It's okay, we still had the entire meal to look forward to.  We were armed with margaritas and ready to go.  As usual, the rest of the meal filled with carnitas, prawns, chicken, and fish was excellent.  We even ended it with dessert after!

The unfortunate turn of events came after we received our bill. $325 meal for five was not a high price to pay when you are sharing it with longtime friends whom you have not seen in over a year.

The server kept coming by every two minutes to ask if we needed anything else.  She cleared the table a little each time she came, first the plates, then our margarita glasses, next our napkins, and finally our water.  Okay lady, we get the hint!  It wasn't even 30 seconds after she cleared our water when the manager came by and asked if we needed anything else.  This prompted me to yell out, "we get the hint and are leaving now!!". Two hours and over $300 later, this is how Colibri treats us.  The ironic thing is that there wasn't even a party of five waiting for our table.

Note to Colibri - perhaps I'll return when your staff learns some proper etiquette!

Note to other Yelpers - go for the food but don't expect good service!

Colibri has me wrapped around it's little Mexican finger. After the incredibly awesome meal I had here, Colibri can do no wrong in my eyes... or mouth. Hey, I love a great hole-in-the-wall that bangs out the most bad-ass burritos in town just as much as the next guy, but this place seriously rocks. The mole chicken is finger lickin', but everything here pretty much is.  I need a moment in silence for the tor... the torrr... the tortillas!! I get goosebumps just thinking about those warm perfect bundles of perfection. It's just a tortilla, right? Wrong! It's the best tortilla I've had in any restaurant and makes whatever you chose to stuff inside it taste so good you'll wanna sneak off to the darkest corner and do whatever you do in dark corners.

Take your family. Take your friends. Hell, go by yourself. Just make sure to make rezzies and order... everything.

This may be one of my new favorite restaurants (behind Alexander's, of course)!

Three types of salsa served with seemingly unlimited piping hot tortillas, I knew this would be good but even my expectations couldn't imagine what was in store.

We started with the Panuchos de Cochinita Pibil.  This was the low-light of the dinner, really, the worst of the best.  The shredded pork was moist and the other ingredients fresh but the dish wasn't exactly anything "special."

The filet was one of the most tender I've had in awhile.  It was the accompanying ancho chile stuffed with seasoned goat cheese that helped me decide on this particular entree though.  Plus, mashed potatoes with sautéed spinach and chipotle chile sauce, I knew I couldn't go wrong.  Boy, did I do right!

My dining companion ordered the carnitas, which I had to steal a taste of.  There was a citrus outer layer that awakened the taste buds, different, in a good way, than what I'm used to.

I will undoubtedly return soooon, especially since they have a Happy Hour!

Yeah the food was interesting and the wait staff were nice and helpful. It's in a touristy area without making you feel like a tourist. I'd go here again if I had the urge for Mexican food in SF, and I 'd try some of the other dishes. We especially enjoyed the freshly made avocado.

I ordered the scallops, corn meal and peruvian mashed potatoes. It all worked great together in a very strange way....fun stuff.

My friends and I came here for a friend's birthday dinner on a Saturday night. We had a reservation for our group of 8 and were seated quickly.
The menu was very interesting and varied. Our group ordered:
Filet Mignon (served with pashed potatoes)
Tostadas de Tinga (little tostada appetizer with chicken)
Pechuga de Pollo (stuffed chicken breast)
Fish tacos (appetizer of little tacos)
    Scallops (served with mashed potatoes)

Before our food came, we got the "chips and salsa" of Colibri- fresh-made tortillas served with three salsas. Delicious!

Our waiter was nothing special, but we were also not trying too hard to interact with him.

    Food impressions:
Small portions for the price (our 6 foot something guys left hungry)
Scallops (what I ate) were well-cooked, one was a little undercooked. Served with mashed potatoes and avocado sauce. Good flavors.
Tostadas were nice and spicy. Good balance of hot, creamy.

Had heard great things about this place and was disappointed as was our group. Perhaps it was because we went for brunch and not lunch or dinner? I had the eggs benedict and it was dry and lacked flavor. My buddy got a chile releno and wasn't pleased either. The guac was proly the highlight next to the bottomless mimosas.

Looking for some delicious Mexican fare? This place has it goin' on!
From phenomenal guacamole (some of the best I've ever had), cheesey quesadillas, fresh seafood dishes, and a tequila list longer than most, I say that this place deserves a solid five stars from this gal!

The staff is friendly, the food is fresh, the drinks are delicious, and their margarita selection is impressive! Come on a date or group dinner, they have room to fit larger groups in their comfy booths. Gotta love a good booth! No matter how small or big your appetite is upon arrival, I highly recommend getting some of their guacamole along with their delicious complimentary chips and sauces (they give you 3!). Very very good.

Hmm I want to give this a place a 3.5 considering it's pricey for the relatively small portion you get, but the food was SO good, and fresh.

Not your tex-mex fare -- this is more traditional but yet, in a classy setting, which is a big change.

The restaurant is really nice :) great to chill with friends or a group. There's an add $5 to your meal to add a margarita, LOL, wish more places were like this :)

I didn't get any drinks but they sound really good. Apparently there's a chile margarita or something?? Might come back to try it one day.

Food: preeeeetty pricey and the portions are small (AKA, just right, where you won't be stuffing your face and feeling like crap afterwards)

Guacamole: pretty good, but again, small. Chips were made in-house I THINK, since it felt warm..? Haha..

I got the mole poblano (chicken with a black sauce that included chocolate and some stuff I don't remember..) The chicken was suuuuper tender and the sauce was really good and unique.

My co-workers got some tacos -- that they said was super fresh and tasted good, but it was like, $12 for 3 widdo tacos -- AND I DON'T LIKE TO USE THE WORD "WIDDO" when I have to pay for something. LOL.

Anyhow, pretty solid place and the price is justified by how nice the restaurant looks, the service, the presentation, and most of all - the food.

Tasty, well executed upscale Mexican fare.

I'm a big fan of homemade tortillas so they get high marks from me off the bat.
We had their guac, fish tacos, and Yucatan pork. Everything was delicious.

Had a michelada (Mexican bloody Mary) from here a long time ago, that made me a fan. Haven't had a better one since.

An exceptional place. Food was very fresh and clean. How do I know it was clean? I can tell these things in my gut. Salad had fresh mango and edible flowers that you really enjoyed eating. Guacamole served with small, warm tortillas. This alone would be worth the trip.  Waiting now for the molten choc cake which will probably put me happily over the edge. It did!! To die for - and I mean that almost literally.
Do make reservations here, or else you won't get a table. We ate at the bar, which was fine, and the bartender was very attentive. Man, this place is really, really good.

We visited this place as a group of 4 adults and 2 children. We all loved the food. We had the reservation, so got the seating timely but the main course took a little time to arrive at our table but the food was very good. I would recommend this place being expensive and do have reservation as it is usually crowded.

Maybe coming from SoCal my pallate for "fancy" mexican food isnt as refined but Ifound this place to have okay food. I went for the mole since I couldnt justify a $15 burrito or whatever it was. Chicken was tender and mole was good but a tad pricey for what it was.

Downtown Mexican Bistro on Geary street, located 1.5 blocks from Union Square Park. Bistro feels a little tourist. Food was nicely plated, but super dainty and a little pricey.

    Ate:
    * Guacamole $12 Made fresh just tell us how spicy you would like it; served with fresh handmade corn tortillas. Add chips $2. (4 of 5) It was really fresh and delicious. The corn tortillas were delicious. But rarely do people eat guacamole without chips. So it was $14 for fresh guacamole and chips! And too bad, the bowl was so shallow. Dipped the chip in for a scoop of guacamole and it broke off when it hit the shallow end of the bowl. And the chips for $2, not stale, but not great either. Found some chips where a stack of 8 chips were fried together. Not really satisfied with $12 guacamole or $2 chip bowl. I think I like Chevy's chips more. However, I think the $2 add on charge is for unlimited chips. I cannot confirm, but if I go back, I will double check.
Mole Poblano $17 a legendary blend of spices, chiles, nuts and chocolate made into a rich and flavorful sauce,in the traditional Puebla style, served over chicken. (3 of 5). Tasty mole sauce, but only got three pieces of chicken nuggets.
Pato en Mole Verde Pipián $20 pan seared duck breast in a delicious green mole sauce made with pumpkin seeds, tomatillos, nuts and spices. (3 of 5) Duck was nice, but not juicy. And the flavor was mellow for a duck piece. I was really confused when I saw spaghetti on my plate. But it was spaghetti. I think this dish needs some re-design, no spaghetti please.
Churro with Caramel Sauce Filling (2 of 5). I thought this was a great idea, but I don't think it was executed right. The churro was hard and the caramel sauce I expected to flow out or at least be soft, was nothing like that. Oh, I would like to try a creative new twist on Churro, but this was not it.

Next time, I would try Chamorro de Cordero $20 (lamb shank marinated in a paste of Muscat wine and spices, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed to perfection). Someone else ordered the dish and that seemed the best bang of meat for the buck.

This restaurant left me somewhat unsatisfied. I was expecting a filling or tasty Mexican dinner. But all the dishes were just presented nicely, they did not fulfill my hunger.

Colibri is mexican food crack.  You crave it!  Your mouth waters when someone starts talking about their guacamole. You twitch thinking about the carnitas or chicken mole dancing on your tongue. Then you start to think about what you would do for another napkin filled with their homemade tortillas made two seconds before they arrive at your table.  Just typing this review has me sweating a little as my mind wonders into a colibri margarita memory.

Seriously this is the real deal.  I love this place.  Outside of Tommy's out in the avenues, this is the best mexican restaurant in SF.

We went here on our last night in San Francisco.  The restaurant was busy but we were seated promptly.  The service staff was quick and sincere in wanting us to enjoy our meal.  We ordered several apps and each had a margarita.  Everything tasted great and arrived quickly.  My wife's drink had a fruit fly in it and when I pointed this out to our server he quickly replaced the drink.  We had a good time and would come back again.

Oh Colibri, you broke my heart. I've raved about you for years!  Your happy hour, bartenders, and dinner service have always been great. Love your salsas and tortillas! Your food is great, but requires good service to be worth the price.

Then came a brunch experience. Service was slow yet there weren't many other patrons, 2 of 5 of us got the wrong entree, and our drinks were empty most of the time we were there.

Loved the pechuga ranchera chicken. I have generally negative feelings on fine dining mexican food but this place pulled it off. The orange sauce was very flavorful and the chicken was cooked perfectly. It was like a high class enchilada without the tortilla.

I agree with previous yelpers that it's not enough to replace the beautiful simplicity of hole in the wall mexican food, but it would be nice to indulge yourself here if you're in the mood for a nice sit down dinner.

I went here on a Friday evening around 7pm.  The restaurant was not really busy, however they have a back part of the restaurant that seats a decent number of people.

The service here was superb.  The waiters were very nice and helpful.  It made the experience good.

The food itself however, wasn't the best or worth the price.  You'll see a lot of reviews about the 'tableside' preapred guacamole.  They don't advertise it that way, but dumb yelp reviewers here do.  First of all, it's not tableside.  It's done at a stand in the middle of the restaurant.  Second, the guacamole is already prepared before being brought out.  The stand is just to mix some ingredients such as tomatoes and onions into the mashed avocado.  Third, what really got me, was that it came in this massive mortar and pestle-type bowl.  I thought we were getting a massive amout of guacamole for the price.  However, they put a shallow dish on top of the opening such that it was actually a disappointing amount of guacomole.  I'd say 1.5 avocados at most.  And I'd put the taste at normal compared to other mexican establishments.

I make guacamole every two weeks, where a large avocado is $0.99 at a grocery store, so I know volume and pricing.  Was it worth $12 + $2 for chips?  No.  Not even the labor justifies it.  Also, shame on you yelp reviewers who don't know what good table-side guacamole is.

Also ordered the Carnitas ($17) and a special of the day Pork steak ($17).  They were both good.  They also give tons of tortillas for free, which is great.  The carnitas dish is probably the best.  Pretty tasty, although a little dry.

Overall, give 2 stars are for the great service plus 1 star for the carnitas.  Not enough to make me wanna come back.  Skip the appetizers.  Go for the entrees.

Best. Guacamole. Ever. A fresh, house-made tortilla to accompany the green goodness is even better. I have been here twice and delighted not only in the phenomenal guac, but also the chile relleno and the pechuga ranchera. Both dishes are so tasty that I am salivating a bit just typing this review. The ambiance is pretty cool, too. With the food being this superb, I would let it go if the service was just alright. But even the service is top-notch. When in the mood for Mexican, I naturally gravitate towards hole in the wall taquerias that serve up big burritos.  But I suppose we all have to be civilized once in awhile, so I agreed when some friends decided on dinner at Colibri.

I knew nothing of the restaurant, other than my friend telling me they make a good table-side guacamole.  So, we got some guacamole, chips, and toritillas/salsa for the table, while I ordered the Pechuga Ranchera for myself.

The  Pechuga Ranchera was described as "tender chicken breast smothered in a creamy guajillo chile sauce, over mashed potatoes with sautéed spinach and garlic" on the menu.  I wasn't really sure what to expect, but what I got was delicious.  The sauce was flavorful and the potatoes were smooth and delicious.  The guacamole was good, but not outstanding.

Overall, it was a good experience, and I'm glad I ventured outside of my comfort zone.  But I probably need to eat about a dozen burritos in a hole in the wall before I'd come back for any sort of sit-down Mexican.

Walked by this place on a Tuesday night around 8:30. Almost every table was full. We went in. The hostess immediately sat us, we had menus in hand, waters and drinks placed before us in minutes.

The guacamole was made fresh in front of us and served with chips and warm tortillas.

My husband ordered the stuffed chicken. I ordered a pork stuffed  pepper. Both dinners were perfectly prepared! We ate every last bite!

Dimly lit restaurant, modern decor, quality food and comfortable environment.

I would go here any night of the week. Yum!

I've been to Colibri a handful of times and all in all, it's a great (slightly upscale) Mexican restaurant.

Most recently I ordered the Ensalada Flor de Verano which I loved. It was a lot bigger than I expected but as a fan of edible flowers, I very much enjoyed it. I had that with the Tortilla Soup which was underwhelming. Maybe it's because my mom makes an amazing Tortilla Soup but it was nothing spectacular.

I've had the Queso Fundido con Chorizo in the past and it is superb! It's a lot of cheese so be ready to go a little crazy with the calories but I highly recommend sharing this with the table, it's a winner.

Rather than chips and salsa, you are served tortillas and salsa. The salsas are very good and cover the bases in terms of spiciness. I do with you could select chips rather than tortillas without paying extra.

GREAT Mole! And I love the fresh Guacamole and Tortillas. The food is very good and every dish that passed by I want to try. They also have some grade A tequila that's really smokey. I can't remember the name, so sorry. But I'll find out and update.

This place is nice inside, although almost hard to spot from the street. Make reservations if you can. Might be best on a weekend. It was really busy. I really enjoyed it here.

Mexican food is hard to mess up. This place had very fresh food at a reasonable price. I was solo and I was litterally seated in a corner. It felt like I was in second grade all over again. Main thing, I was able to get reasonably priced, fresh mexican food. I ordered the Carnitas Omelette. It was awesome. Served with black beans and I think potatos but I forgot that minor detail. $10 bottomless mimosas were perfect since I needed to kill time before getting out of town. Great place, great food.

There are several positive things to say about this restaurant but the overall experience was mediocre.  We came here to have brunch/lunch with a group of people and while this is a nice restaurant, it does not accommodate large groups.  They have "large" booths but in reality, the booths fit 5-6 comfortably for average and not large people.  It's a gigantic square table with no leg room.

Service was terribly slow, waitresses and waiters lacked personality and didn't seem friendly and could barely understand English. When we buy $10 of all you can drink champagne, they better keep the champagne flowing, otherwise don't call it all you can drink.  I don't care if we down a glass every 5 minutes for however long we're there, keep it coming! Water refills were a disaster.  Expect to be thirsty during meal.

The food was relatively good, at least what I ordered.  I ordered the Mexican breakfast or "desayuno."  Do you get the bang for your buck?  NO.  First, I specifically asked for no beans and sausage but to add extra rice and potatoes to make up for it.  WTF did I get?  5 pieces of potatoes and a bird size portion of rice. At lease they got the no beans and sausage right.  I have to give them kudos for the guac, it was effin delish!  But freaken $20 for guac and you got to pay an additiona few bucks for a small tray of chips.  Ridonkulous! Bottom line, food was good, not exceptional besides the guac, and extremely overpriced.

If I would do brunch/lunch over again, I would walk right pass this place.

Went here a week ago with some friends from SF. I love going to the mission district to get Mexican food, and I really should have forced my friends to. The food here is very good, very high quality, but very overpriced. You don't get that same stuffed to the brim with cheesy goodness feeling you get when you go to the dirty dirty. Do yourself a favor and get in a cab and go to El Farolito -you won't be disappointed.

This is the place you go with your stuffy aunt who is scared to go to the mission, but loves Mexican food, and is picking up the bill.

The salsa trio soft corn tortillas is awesome. The $14 for chips and guacamole crazy but it is a huge portion. But then I think $14 in the mission is my whole meal plus beer.

I had the chicken mole and it was TASTY!! But it was small and came with only chicken, that's it, no sides!! WTF My friends had the salads -both which were very fresh.

Overall the food quality is extremely high, but the service is super super super slowwwwwwwwwwwwww.  Pick up the pace guys! We are not in Mexico!

My favorite part: TEQUILA!! They have an incredible tequila list.

This place is TASTY. Been here a few times, and love the atmosphere, the food AND the drinks!

You can specify how hot you like your guacamole (it does have onions in it) and fresh made tortillas (all there salsas are amazing). I've had numerous small plates, and cannot say much about the large plates, but I have no doubt they are delicious.

Great spot to come by for a drink before a show in the area, or have a date night with a friend or sweetie! Strawberry basil margarita was amazing!
