This bookstore is basically great for people who work in the downtown core. I know I spent quite a bit of time here on lunch breaks, alone or browsing and chatting with a friend.

I can say that the selection is better than, say, the similar sized Coles in Kingsway Mall. They just seem to have more variety and better titles. They also have a good magazine section and a small wall of journals and notebooks. Even though it's a really busy and small store, it's quite well kept.

The staff are usually quite helpful. It gets really busy at lunch time, of course.

Coles sucks, right? That's what I thought, and that's why I hadn't even bothered walking into one for years. Until I was tempted by a 2009 Hello Kitty calendar in the window and discovered to my delight that Coles is now owned by Indigo, thus ensuring both a killer selection, lots of sale items and discounts with Chapters cards.
It's not like it was before; you won't only see the New York Times bestseller list, mediocre contemporary fiction and science fiction/fantasy on Coles' shelves. The transformation into a mini-Chapters in the mall was actually kind of astounding, and I'm super excited that this part of downtown actually has someplace promising to purchase books.
Okay, okay. Check Audrey's first and support independent business... but if you're lazy or you don't find anything there, then there's always Coles.

I find that Coles is an 'okay' alternative to Chapters. I find this location to be lacking a lot of selection, however considering this is downtown, you do not have much of an option when it comes to bookstores. If you need something quick to read like a magazine or a popular book title, I would recommend this place. They do have a decent selection, just nothing comparable to Chapters. It is extremely  convenient to pick something up for downtown professionals. Otherwise, there is not much in this store that would attract me to this location.

The staff here were quite friendly,  and gave me some good recommendations on fantasy/sci fi books to read from their current selection, which I found quite helpful. I often find myself amazed that Coles is still in business whenever I pass by this location, but there must be a steady stream of customers to support this business through.

Personally I think Coles is a Dying breed. People would much rather go to Chapters when looking for books. Coles is the kind of place people stop to browse at magazines when they need to pass some time or need to pick up a book to pass the time. Chapters takes all the customers that are looking for specifics because they are pretty much guaranteed to have it. This makes me feel bad for Coles because I am totally guilty of just using it and abusing it.

They have started to stock more books and larger variety but I don't think they can ever compete with Chapters.

I was at City Centre the other day and was bored and had time to kill, so I decided to browse around Coles. It's small, but nice -- a standard chain book shop that fits neatly in the mall. Great selection, lots of bargain book tables, and friendly staff that say hello to you and ask if you need any help. Their prices are generally the same as Chapters (aren't they within the same big company?). They've also got cards, journals, calendars, and I think magazines too. A good place to browse through if you're bored at the mall, or shop at if you don't care that it's a chain.

While not on the grand scale of Chapters, Coles has a reasonable selection of books and magazines on pretty much any topic. There is a decent selection of books on sale, and Coles also carries gifts like journals, calendars, bookmarks, and other small literary-related trinkets. The best-sellers and new releases are at the front of the store, with the rest of the books arranged by topic throughout. I would not come here specifically, but if I am near City Centre Mall and need a book, I would definitely drop by. That is what I did a while back when I needed some Spanish language instructional materials.  I came, I saw, I bought.
