I've been to Coffee Cat at least 10 times since my last review, and it's been great every time. They use organic locally grown fruits and vegetables in most of their food offerings, and have a wide range of treats and lunch items. One of my favorites is their yogurt/granola/berry parfait. I just wish they'd package the granola separately, so it wouldn't get mushy.
I believe they are tied for the best coffee in town. It's a toss up between Coffee Cat and Heather's. But since Heather's in a drive through, and Coffee Cat doesn't have a drive through, it's an easy decision where to go. If I have time to sit and/or need to work, I usually stop at Coffee Cat these days.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Becca N.
Santa Cruz, CA
Since I've been patronizing this establishment for a year and a half, I figured I'd throw in my two cents. After the reading the other reviews, I feel most comfortable settling on a solid three stars.
I've never met the owner. From what I've read on Yelp, though, it seems as though Sauron himself, once evicted from Mordor, decided to re-evaluate his career and set up coffee shops in Santa Cruz County. You see, I go to Coffee Cat almost exclusively on Thursday nights and there's usually one barista on staff. Presumably, the owner is shepherding ring-wraiths at that hour. I don't know.
I've had time to try just about every pastry they have. The muffins, scones, bars and cookes are all pretty good. The prices are a little wallet-rapey, but no more so than any other food-distributing coffee joint. Still, ouch. The espresso drinks aren't really my favorite. They always taste burned to me, somehow. The coffee, however, tastes fine. I almost always order the coffee.
The service is usually top-notch. I've never gotten something I didn't ask for, and the baristas have always been friendly and attentive, except for this one girl, that one time. She was so angry and surly that her legend looms large with me and my friends. She wasn't there for long, and customer service isn't for everbody. I get that. But all the other baristas who've helped me were swell.
This last little thing is going to sound nit-picky, but it just bugs me: when I leave Coffee Cat, my clothes smell greasy. They smell like I've been sitting in Denny's or some other greasy spoon for hours. I don't get it.
So, I knocked off one star for the prices, and the other one because I usually only see one person working the place at night. IMO, I think there should be two people on staff at all times for safety purposes. I've heard too many stories about someone being attacked at work while they were working alone. Safety first, guys. And thanks for the coffee. Really. I like it. -

As a small business owner myself I am extremely surprised and completely dumbfounded at the extreme lack of customer service this business has. And let me clarify that when I say that I am talking about the arrogant and rude owner. So this one star is for him.
I would not frequent any of his locations. Which is too bad because I have had some really nice experiences at this establishment but his treatment of his customers has made me anti his establishments for life.
I would also like to note that I did try to give this place one more chance and the blonde working actually let my coffee drink sit behind the counter while she shamelessly flirted and blatantly tried to get a job from a patron who seemed to be an architect or contractor
of some sort, apparently that is what she is studying.
Well that's nice but can I have my coffee. (which is not very good anyway) -
Review from Carissa L.
San Martin, CA
I wish there was a 2.5 rating, its not as bad as a solid 2 but, there is no way I could justify rating this coffee house with 3 stars.
First off, I have been here numerous times. At least twice a week. So, my review is not based off of a one-time judgment.
My orders are never complicated. Yet, the over-cheerful (or sometimes plain rude), pretty little baristas always seem to mess up my order. Only three or four times have I had a decent latte. The service is so hit and miss!
How hard is it to make a Vanilla Latte, non-fat, no foam (or "flat" as they call it), with whip cream?
They sometimes forget to put in the vanilla syrup, or simply not enough making the latte too bitter to drink. Rarely ever do they remember "no foam" and not once have they remembered the whip cream! Why should I have to remind them of something they charged me for? Then, when I do remind them, they pour out a third of my drink to put the tiniest amount of whip cream.
Honestly, I don't know why I keep coming back, maybe because it's close? Or maybe, because I want to experience the wonderful coffee and service again I had received the first time I tried Coffee Cat?
Whatever reason it may be, I think I will just start going to Starbucks in the next shopping center over... -

tip for the owner:
firstly 10/10 for the cute skinny barista .. someone with her looks could be a real bitch.. she was actually quite nice.
ok, here's the problem ... your coffee is weak, i'll try occasionally but can't go back to weak insipid flavorless coffee after drinking Peet's ...
considering most american's like starbucks or diner coffee , hey no worries but not for me....

In the summer I end up spending alot of time in Scotty Valley for various reasons and that means lots of trips to Coffee Cat.
As others have said there are lots of reasons to like Coffee Cat over the big guys. More personal service, cut decor, pretty good quality drinks and a nice selection of foods to eat.
Can be crowded sometimes with the people who hang out for hours on end. But most of the times you can just sit down and relax if you are not grabbing and going.
Try the salads, the egg burritos and the Mocha Chai. All highlights for me.Listed in: Caffeine Fix

First off they roast their own beans, if I walk into a coffee shop and the first thing I see is a roaster it's a good sign. They have very good espresso an abundance of different style seating, outdoors, indoors, two different bar type of seats and a lot of seating in back.
The music is good, but not crazy loud like some of the coffee shops in San Francisco and the super cute barista had a smile on her face the whole time. -

I dig The Cat because:
1. the coffee is pretty darn good
2. they've figured out how to provide hassle-free 802.11g wifi to paying customers -- you buy some coffee, you get to surf the Web for awhile. Buy more coffee, surf more Webz. Simple. Nice.
3. Atmosphere there is mellow and not hipster-obnoxious
4. Electrical power there is RELIABLE -- when the juice frequently conks out at my house in the Scotts Valley Sticks, I head to The Cat.
5. Lastly but not leastly: THEY AIN'T STARBUXX.Listed in: Restaurants

First-I really like most of the staff here and I really want to give a good review because I like to support local businesses BUT I've been coming here since Coffee Cat opened and their service and drinks and food are inconsistent at best.
I used to order a soy latte every time and it was different every time and sometimes undrinkable. My sweetie used to love the vegie breakfast burrito but they usually ended up placing it in their warming oven on top of burned crumbs which ruined the taste. Then they were out of them, then they changed the contents, or they gave us the wrong burrito....like I said-inconsistent.
I really am a local business supporter and hope that Coffee Cat takes a cue from big coffee places and works on consistency and putting out a good product every time. -

I dont know if I come here because I love the coffee and atmosphere, or because I have a mad crush on the cute barista (Sheena). Anyway, its a great place to get my studying done since I have like 20 books to go through each week for school. Its tough to find good places to study around town, but Ive found this place to be suitable. The atmosphere is pleasant, the coffee is pretty good, and the customers aren't annoying. Its very comfortable and the WiFi is great. The food could be better but thats probably my only complaint. And maybe I should ask Sheena out!

My boss always raved about Coffee Cat's coffee being his favorite, and after trying a vanilla latte, it might be my favorite, too. Presentation, temperature, taste - 5 stars all around. Plenty of room to sit, plenty of outlets for your laptop, even a large community table in the back. Somebody thought this through.
It's a little loud with the roaster in the front, and abstract indie music playing - some of which is too repetitive for my liking. With a purchase, you get 188 minutes of Wifi, which is plenty for almost anything I'd want to do.
Friendly staff too, professional, but still conversationally adept.

Coffee Cat, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...
In my opinion this is the penultimate coffee shop. Their coffee is amazing, largely because they do all their own roasting. (Those huge machines aren't just decorative!) Plus their baristas are true artists, as evidenced by the high level of craft in each and every drink - see foam art pictures below.
The food is incredible, not only delicious but perfectly suited for Santa Cruz with lots of vegan/vegetarian options.
Lastly the atmosphere very original and fresh (evidenced by the rotating art work) Cheerful bustling staff and baristas who are very attentive to patrons- most of which are small business owners either conferencing here or meeting clients, or they're students meeting as a "study hall" or doing some late night cramming- all taking advantage of the free wifi.
This was for many years our late night hangout, as they're open 'till 11, either playing games or just talking. Many great memories, hour-long gaming sessions, and memorable parties. Coffee Cat will always be the bar to which I measure every other coffee shop. -

I was a bit surprised when I came to this coffee house. I only expected to eat a bagel and cream cheese. However, they served rigatoni, lasagna, breakfast burritos, to name a few. The vegetarian breakfast burrito was really good. The service was great!. The coffee, which they roast themselves, is really well done.
They use only organic ingredients! The location, the ambiance was nice, and the internet was exceptional. Well Done Coffee Cat! I will be back again soon! -

I was visiting the on Friday, February 10 and stopped in for coffee. I purchased a bag of whole beans and paid with my credit card. They were "having trouble with the computer" and swiped my card twice. Both charges went through, resulting in my having paid $31.50 for 3/4 pound of coffee. I have made numerous attempts to contact them by phone to get the issue resolved over the past three days, and no one ever answers the phone. With customer service so poor, they do not deserve to be in business.

UPDATE: I don't go to Coffee Cat because Scotts Valley is not my scene, but I want to retract my criticism of the owner, Manthri. His other place, LuLu's, has since put back their electrical outlets and instituted a time limit on their WiFi, which I think is a fair solution. I appreciate him making an effort to create a good environment for people studying without letting it get out of control. I don't know if Coffee Cat still has no WiFi but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
The 1-star review is for the owner, not the coffee shop.
Mr. Srinath seems to think that there are enough people who care that his coffee beans are from Costa Rica to offset the people who want to hang out in a pleasant, happy space and study, work, or just pass time on their laptops.
I'm a software engineer, and this attitude reminds me of a pathology we have in my industry, where engineers develop awful products that people hate to use because they spend all their time creating nerdy, esoteric features that geeks love but regular people find useless.
Similarly, Manthri wants to show off for the tiny but vocal coffee geek crowd at the expense of the regular folks who care about the complete coffee shop experience, off which coffee and wifi are equally important components.
This is a bold risk he's taking, and I assume he knows his market well enough to feel that Coffee Cat can survive it, but personally I am rooting against him. I hope he learns a painful lesson that prevents him from attempting a similar stunt at LuLu's.
In the meantime, I give my business to The Abbey, a coffee shop that cares about the complete coffee shop experience, not just one narrow aspect of it. -

Stopped here on our way back from camping in Big Basin to get something warm and yummy in our bellies. Their "Real Honey Chai" is pretty dern fabulous. It's what I am accustomed to when I make it at home by brewing the tea and then adding milk and sweeteners as I see fit at the moment. I also tried the banana walnut muffin and it was fresh, not too dense and very wonderfully banana-y... delightful.
Any place that has their own roaster in the shop gets an automatic extra star from me. This place was also freaken immaculate, and set up really yuppie cute. I wish they had a shop in San Jose... say... right in between my work and my house... yeah... that would be just about perfectListed in: Where's My Coffee?

In a world where there are two Starbucks for every one person, is it really a crime to employ the Starbucks terminology every once in a while?! Ok yeah its annoying that small is now tall, medium-grande and large veinte... but get over it. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last ten years you know what I mean when I order a grande non fat latte so don't give me those discerning eyes and that "what I'm so confused" act.
Other than that, this place is ideal for doing homework: large tables, lots of outlets, nice music and free WiFi. Plus the drinks (apple cider is the best I've had) and food (really good, fresh) are tasty... just DON'T forget you aren't in Starbucks anymore..... -

I see that wifi is now available for a a fee according to one reviewer here. I have to concur that the overpriced food still and isn't worth the trip. $6 coffee and wifi, I think not!
Until your food is as good as Gayle's or your place as interesting as The Farm, then and only then, can you start charging prices that reflect quality. The Coffee Cat is not worth it on all accounts.1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Jose, CA
I currently have mixed feelings about this establishment.
Early this year, I was unemployed and would leave my home to sit in Coffee Cat with my laptop. I did this approx 3-4 times a week, spending on average $10.00 each time.
The draw to this places with a clean shop, pretty nice people, the wifi, and nice group of customers, some of which i came to know well. With no job, this gave me a place to go and a reason to get out.
But recently I went into the shop, and this is when i found out they removed the wifi. I was very disappointed. I like to go there to work and enjoy a drink and some food. Without internet, a big reason for why i would go there and spend $$$ was no longer there. For me, the experience came from the food product, environment, and extra services. It was a package deal.
But then I saw this response from coffee Cat's:
"When I see our lobby empty because we have no WiFi, I realize just how little this clientele values all the effort we put into our products, and how much work we must now do to rebuild our brand."
I was kind of taken back when i saw this. Ever heard the saying, "The customer is always Right." Well the customer was saying that they want coffee and Wifi. The reason you have an empty lobby is because you stopped listening to what the customer wanted, and took a drastic move to completely eliminate the issue of freeloaders. This was a bad and short-sighted move, and as a former customer, its kind of insulting to read that response.
I did value your products as an entire package, but then you eliminated a valued service, you still expect people to pay the same outrageous prices and feel that they are still getting good value for their money??
Dont blame the customers. Take a better look at improving your product and listening to the people that spend $$ keep you in business. -

Awww, totally bummed about the no WiFi news. Sometimes it's nice to go in and do a little work there. I always buy something when I come in--either a cappuccino or a hot chocolate and a pastry. I may not be coming in as often without the WiFi, however, since it was a nice place to connect and be around people.
The cappuccinos always good and beautifully made (you should see the artistic froth!). The pastries are also quite good. Most of the staff is friendly and warm. -

An independent coffee shop thriving within a coupla stones throw from a 'Bux AND a Peet's? I had to try it. And I'm not a Scotts Valley native.
I must first confess I didn't have a chance to try out their espresso. I bought me a bag of beans (they roast their own coffee, yo) which earned me a free medium drink. The barista convinced me that getting a blended drink was a better deal than a straight espresso. So I obliged, cus I'm Chinese like that. I got the espresso chip freddo...which was a mistake because while it tasted good (and the fresh whipped cream even better) the espresso chips just felt like a bunch of coffee grinds in my coffee, which is basically what they were.
Had a sandwich...yum. Half turkey, half ham with pesto on a pretty decent roll of bread.
Everything's organic, if that's how you roll. Meaning the milk, the cheese, the bread, the salad, the pies, etc., and of course, the beans.
Plenty of tables and outlets, if that's also how you roll. But wifi didn't seem to be giving me internet access while I was there. Oh well, I guess that means I had to be productive. -

Reviewing the place: It's clean and the drinks are good.
I'm not likely to return though. Because I'm one of the customers that the owners chose to alienate by nixing WiFi. I'd make the trip from Santa Cruz to study there because it had ample outlets and an excellent atmosphere. I'm not really a coffee drinker either, but I would always order a couple drinks while I was there. Compensation for services used.
But really it's not worth the trip now, I need WiFi for my schoolwork so I'll just find a closer place and save the gas money.
UPDATE: Looks like wifi is back in some form for paying customers. -

Is there anything better than a perfectly crafted espresso drink?
Or anything worse than an unskilled barista?
These lovely people saved me from total despair with the best pulled espresso shots I've had since relocating from the Bay Area.
All of my other visits to local coffeehouses, even the chain gangs, left a terrible, bitter or watery taste in my mouth. The best way to test a barista's skills without learning their life story- that comes with time- is to ask for two single espresso shots, pulled in succession. The uneducated counter people often ask if I want a double (no), or they just pull two shots through the same grounds (not what I asked for). I take these puzzled looks and sloppy work as an indication they didn't know **** about coffee and just assume I'm a pain in the ass. Fine, sure I admit I have been spoiled.
But to my detailed request, I did not so much receive a blink of shock out of the lovely baristas at Coffee Cat. They are a truly passionate roaster seeking to please your palate with their favorite beverage.
A cozy interior, free secured WiFi and welcoming, knowledgeable staff are just a few reasons to skip right over the carbon heavy chain roasters and taste some real, fresh, local coffee.Listed in: la creme de la creme

So far I love their Black Cat Italian roast... strong, smooth, dark and rich... and they were very friendly to me, as a first timer... helping me choose what whole beans I would like to take home. Their drip coffee is divinely made and though I've yet to try anything else on the menu I enjoyed chatting with the baristas. Good folks here. Seems like a nice relaxed place and I like that they're open til 10 on weekdays, 11 on weekends.
I've tried other local roasters and I'll defintely visit here again. Vastly superior. -

There are two coffee places in Santa Cruz county worth going to. This is one of them.
Coffee Cat offers a standard menu of espresso based coffee drinks. The standards are extremely well done. Frau frau drinks also available. Coffee Cat has a lot of room, comfortable chairs, a good number of tables. Wi-Fi is free and always working at least in my experience.
The coffee here is very well prepared. These are barista who know their stuff and take pride in what they do. No minimum wage slaves here. The coffee is roasted on site and available for purchase. This the only place in Santa Cruz that I will buy coffee from.

No internet? Who does Coffee Cat think they are...Starbucks?
I used to frequent coffee cat all the time, buying great soup and drinks, it was a great place to study while listening to pandora. Now i cannot do that... which means pure and simply ill go to a coffee establishment that has free wi-fi like "surf city coffee" where im at right now writing this review.
I am very concerned with the huge mistake this establishment has made. It totally insults me as a costumer and many of my friends. They wont be getting any word of mouth advertising from me, or my friends.
Honestly i have to say im not a coffee lover but i would buy soup and other drinks because i loved the atmosphere at coffee cat until they got arrogant about the wi-fi issue.
I have to say their spicy chicken soup is amazing! They need to improved their bagel selection its kinda lacking. -

For a small town, Scotts Valley is jam packed with coffee houses. We even have the distinct "privilege" of being home to (count them) 3 Starbucks!! Though that fact makes me want to cry, I'll hold my head up high and do a little dance of joy as Scotts Valley is also home to the Coffee Cat.
The layout is fun - offers comfy stuffed chairs along with your basic table and chair set up. There is free WiFi and plenty of space to sit and work on your laptop. There are many more food selections than your basic pastry/muffin options and they work hard to ensure that their ingredients are organic. The staff is always friendly and great about remembering the drink favorites of repeat customers.
Great place to go for breakfast or lunch; you can run in and out or kick up your feet and stay awhile. A cemented favorite of mine and my girl friends!Listed in: My Backdoor...

I want to update this review to mention that Coffee Cat is now using a very simple system (http://linemonkey.com) to allow access to WiFi. You can either go to http://linemonkey.com and order on line to start your WiFi access or buy something at the counter and use the code on the tag. Super easy either way. Hope this quiets all the people who have complained about the WiFi access in the past. If not that then the awesome drinks and food should!
As an out of town consultant I have enjoyed Coffee Cat for years. I tried out all of the other Wi-Fi enabled coffee joints within a reasonable drive and not found one with the same atmosphere, skilled and friendly barristas, and quality coffee. As a web-application developer I often need to be near a customer so I have worked from a lot of coffee shops. Coffee Cat is hands down my favorite.
I am amazed at the reviews that complain about the Wi-Fi situation. I could not imagine walking into a business and consuming their resources and not buying anything. If you have shred of morality (or capitalism for that matter) you should be cheering the decision of the owner of Coffee Cat to ask customers to buy something before they receive free Wi-Fi. Yes I said FREE Wi-Fi. From what I could tell I did not have to pay for the service but it came free with another purchase. I also love the decision as it is now a lot easier to find a seat. Previously there were so many non-paying customers using Wi-Fi that it was very difficult to find a seat and the service was slow and unstable. Hence 5 stars.
I love coconut. I dont do sugar like I use to. I need sugarfree drinks. And this is the only place I can get a sugarfree coconut latte!
Really, the coffee is great too. The quality is better than starbucks and petes. It has good aroma and no bitter aftertaste at all (what's up with Starbucks coffee lately anyways.. weird. I still go there though).
They also serve sandwiches, quiches, and other neat stuff to eat. People are friendly. Their logo is cool. I always stop in there when I'm in the area. -

I'm really surprised by some of the hostile reviews on this list. I guess there are some out there who believe in getting something for nothing.
Coffee Cat is by far the best coffee and espresso I ever had in my forty year quest for the best coffee.
The coffee is so fabulous that I have it shipped to me in Hawaii.
To me, there is no finer bean or roast than espresso classico.
As to the owner's demeanor, I have always been treated with respect when visiting Coffee Cat, even with three young kids in tow. Before moving from California to Hawaii, Coffee Cat was a required stop by my wife and I and it was worth the three hour drive to get there!
The owners have extensive knowledge of coffee and it shows in their fine product. Any queries made about the coffee are gladly answered thoroughly and with a smile.
Keep up the good work! -

They have a touch-screen menu that gives you 10% off for ordering without engaging socially with anyone. The problem with this is how do the workers make any tips? I guess they accept this on taking employment there.
The Kool Kats (or are they cool cats? Maybe I made them more cute than they are?) are just Frappuccinos with a themed name. I had the Oreo one with soy. (No extra charge for soy!) It was fine.
The big plus is that they are open late enough that I can stop there on the way to Saturn Cafe. I'll update this review when I've had an actual coffee drink that involves skill. -
