Sigh. Coburg Coffee House. Every time I walk through your welcoming doors, I'm met with warm memories of my university days, and my time spent inside your cafe during these years. Enjoying my morning cuppa joe (cappucino actually), chowing down on one of your delicious sandwiches, chatting with friends while relaxing in your ample seating between classes...cramming like mad and losing my mind studying for an imminent exam or frantically working on a paper 3 hours before it was due...
Er...anyway, the point is there were lots of good times to be had...
I may no longer be a crazy, stressed out, strung-out-on-caffeine young student, but I can still enjoy what this charming spot has to offer. As mentioned above, the drinks are quite tasty, especially their cappucinos and lattes (aka, my life's blood). I also have an extreme fondness for their smoothies: thick, blended well, and very tasty.
Some of their food can be a bit hit or miss (some of the soups I've enjoyed, others I've found rather tasteless), but I have to say, their sandwiches are where it's at. Especially their paninis. My favourite is their grilled cheese.
Inside is actually fairly spacious, with lots of seating, which is helpful during its busy times.
Staff are always laid back, friendly, and just seem...content. Which really fits with the vibe of the whole place I find. It's relaxing and comfortable. A good place to kick back for a bit and read a book while you sip your beverage, or catch up with a friend. Or try not to tear out every hair on your head while wondering if having a nervous breakdown will get you an extension on that 25 page term paper you have due that afternoon. You know, whatever's your thing.
One last tidbit, they also have an open-mic here on Wednesday nights, for anyone who likes to perform, or just sit and watch. It can get a little loud, so I wouldn't go at this time expecting to be able to engage in a quiet activity such as reading or studying, but other than that it seems to be a good time, with a decent crowd turnout (the two times I've been, anyway).Listed in: 30 Days of Yelp!, Livin' La Vida Local

This is a pretty popular spot in Halifax, located close to Dalhousie University. I went here on Jan 2nd and it was still pretty busy. The interior is nice and the staff are friendly, and there's a lot of room for lounging and surfing the web.
I came here with a friend for some coffee and ended up buying a grilled chicken panini as well. It wasn't anything special. Coffee was moderate in strength (only offered me one kind of roast) and the panini looked pretty but was small and tasted rather boring. Both came to $10.50. Definitely not worth it.
I might come here again to give them a second chance considering their popularity, but I don't see that happening any time soon.Listed in: Hot Drinks

Ok, I didn't like the fact that the utensils weren't clean properly. Always check the knife and fork before you use them when you are here. Coburg, I am ashame of you, you should know better :(

Coburg Coffee is definitely a cool and unique spot in the city. Tucked just on the outskirts of Spring Garden Road, this is one of the few places with real street cred as a 'university café' given its close location to Dal.
What does that mean? Well, there are always people coming and going, it's great for everything from dates to exam cramming, and it's got a good community feel. No industrial elements here, just a good ole java hideout.
No complaints about the drinks but I find the food a bit uh...missable. Nothing to get too excited about. Focus more on a hot drink with great company and you'll be good to go!Listed in: Coffee Shop Stops, Outsourced Workplaces, Best Local Lattés

My daughter and I popped into the Coburg Coffee House today for lunch. This hopping spot set in an older building close to Dal has lots of seating. We arrived right at noon when the place was packed and were able to squeeze ourselves into a couple of seats at the window.
The line to order seemed to take quite a bit of a time t seemed to take a bit of time to order, but once we placed our order the food wasn't long being delivered to our table. The system of being given a number when you order so the waitstaff can find you seemed to work well.
Confession: I am a bit of a clean freak and this place was spotless. Even with the high volume and turnover, the place was spotless. No stray dishes hanging on tables forever. Tables bussed fairly promptly. Even the bathroom was impressively clean.
The menu has a wide variety of standard coffee shop fare--paninis, custom sandwiches, bagels, baked goods, hot and cold drinks and smoothies. But the food is much better quality than your average coffee joint.
I had a greek vegetable Panini which was vegetables and feta cheese and the butternut squash bisque soup. The soup was kind of bland but the Panini was very tasty. My daughter ahd the special which was a ham, cheddar, apple and mango chutney Panini. That was delicious. Both the cheese and meat were "real"rather than being processed. She also had a very impressive hot chocolate, generously topped with mini marshmellows and whipped cream.
Yes, you'll pay more than if you were buying a sandwich at Tim's, but the food is freshly made, the service pretty efficient and the surroundings are very pleasant.Listed in: 30 Day Yelp Challenge

I didn't go to university in Halifax, so I come to the Coburg Coffee House whenever I have a craving for my old life as a student.
Everything about the vibe in this place screams student - from the open mic style entertainment that seems ad-hoc, to the student servers with oh-so-student fashion statements, this place is heavenly when I want to reminisce.
I've always enjoyed the spacious setting, the quality of the coffee and knowing that when I leave, I'm one of the few that doesn't have a paper to finish by 8AM tomorrow.Listed in: Coffee is my life blood

I don't drink coffee. Yet, this is one of my favourite coffee shops.
Oh Coburg, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways:
1) Free wifi. The code is posted on a chalkboard by the door.
2) Samosas. Some of the best veggie samosas near Dalhousie. Make sure to ask for chutney!
3) Smoothies. A delicious blend of blended drinks.
4) Power outlets. Plenty of them for your laptop or other devices.
5) Seating. Lots of seats and a variety; benches, chairs, bar stools. Whether I'm alone or with a group, I can usually find a spot.
6) Staff. Friendly and fun.
7) Other customers. Everyone seems happy. And there's eye candy for all tastes.Listed in: Coffee shops for a…, Dal

Coburg Coffee House has been a favorite of mine since my Dalhousie days. It isn't a large venue, but what it lacks in size, it compensates with a huge dose of personality.
This cafe is a very lively place with the frequent hustle and bustle of students socializing, poring over books and tapping away at their laptops while siiping a cuppa Joe. (It's worth mentioning that there is WIFI access here, which is a definite plus for students and business folk lolling to catch up on work or update their Facebook pages)
Another thing I love is the outreach that this cafe provides for local talents. Open mic nights have been a frequent, popular affair, and the catchy artwork depicted on the walls are the handiwork of local artists. Fabulous concept.
Is the coffee the best I've had? Honestly, it isn't, but it's fair trade (which I like), it has more flavor than what you might find at the SUB, and it is reasonably priced. Plus, I don't hit up cafés exclusively for the food and beverages- I look for a great experience, and Coburg Coffee House certainly has that -

Ahh, Coburg Coffee House, many a last minute essay was cranked out within the confines of these walls; I almost feel tense even thinking back to it.
The best part about 'Coburg' is that it's a healthy alternative if you're up on campus and hungry. Despite Dal's attempts to incorporate a few healthy choices they just don't seem to have expanded beyond pizza and coffee. This makes Coburg a much needed (close to) campus feature!
I highly recommend their chicken sandwich! You can get it with any of your favorite fixings. Coburg does a very good version of a 'london fog' too. Think early gray tea with steamed milk.
Get to Coburg in the afternoon if you're planning a study camp out since it gets busy in here after dinner. -

Coburg has it all: deliciousness, nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and a close proximity to where I sleep and school myself.
I must also remark individually on the deliciousness; I am referring of course to the hot chocolate and various squares. Coburg's hot chocolate is possibly the second best I've found in a coffee shop (but nobody could ever beat the beanery, http://www.yelp.ca/biz...). The drink itself is tasty, and they also include optional whip cream and marshmallows. The squares in the display case, be they brownie or the new mystery caramel-like variety, are fantabulous. Until I get back to Vancouver, I will go here to dream of the Beanery's awesomeness whenever I crave hot chocolate. -

Daily haunt for morning coffee - for four years running. Great staff with none of that plastic cookie cutter franchaise crap. Don't forget to try a bella sera and a cinnamom/apple swirlie thingie. And check out the artwork.
All round a great stimulant to start the day. -

I think the Coburg Coffee House is a-okay. I don't really have any dire opinions waiting to burst forth and onto the screen, but I shall proclaim that it's a fine café to grab a cuppa-joe.
I don't find that their bevies are prepared with much finesse or attention to detail, but they usually taste good and get the job done. Their sandwiches can be pretty good, especially if you get the veggie fully-loaded, but the prices are a little high since none of the ingredients are of the gourmet variety.
One thing that I am a fan of is the space, or perhaps more aptly put, the people filling the space. There is a constant hum spilling from this café; the sound of student energy, people tapping out essays, and projects being planned and prepared for classes at Dalhousie. It's a great place to park for a few hours, grab a snack and a drink and get work done without having to sit in a formal, educational setting.
If you're in the neighborhood and it's a sunny day, you can always have a seat out front and enjoy your purchases as you watch the university traffic pass. It's a great place to meet friends and catch up on gossip or school work. -

The Coburg Coffee House is tops in my books. I was working close by here the other day and stopped in for a hot cup of Joe.
I took Liz's advice and got a "shot in the dark" in my coffee, I needed it that morning, I also grabbed a bagel with cream cheese.
The line was not too long that day, but I can tell this is a very popular spot and the inside is very nice. I would like to try one of their panins next time for lunch and actually be able to sit and enjoy it.
The staff is quick, friendly and young as well as most of the customers which makes since because of it being so close to Dalhousie. -

Here is a spot that attracts a wealth of student traffic but caters to a much larger audience.
With an abundance of lattes and baked goods to choose from, Coburg Coffee takes care of the basics that you would expect from a venue like this. However Coburg Coffee steps it up a notch with freshly made sandwiches, paninis, soups and salads. In addition to the food selection offered, my personal favorite menu item is the cherry flavored ice cold Italian Soda.
Open mic nights here have become an increasingly popular destination for amateur musicians who are looking to play to an open minded audience.
Coburg Coffee offers free wi-fi, a selection of local newspaper publications, and local art and photographs on display. So whether you're crunching out an essay, meeting friends for lunch, or just looking to spend some relaxing time alone, Coburg Coffee provides the comforting atmosphere you're looking for. -

I thoroughly enjoyed this place both times I went.
First off, I liked the communal water jug offered to parched customers (like me) who don't find coffee all that refreshing. That's not to say that I don't like coffee- I LOVE my coffee, but not after I've sweated out all of the water in my body from walking in the hot weather... This has never happened on a voyage to Coburg, but it could (if I was so unwise as to want a coffee on a 30 degree day)! I also feel like noting that because of my excitement about the free water, I accidentally walked out of the cafe with one of their plastic glasses, I didn't return it because I realized about 5 minutes after we started walking to my friend's house (I am lazy and I am sorry, Coburg Coffee House, but I'm sure my friend appreciates having an extra glass).
I can't really remember whether or not I was like "wow- this is a good cup of coffee". I am sure it sufficed since I know that i didn't say "wow- this is a crap cup of coffee". I didn't try any of their specialty coffee, but upon asking my friends about how their selections were, the responses were generally positive.
I really enjoyed their Italian Soda, they have a really good selection, and it was quite tasty. And I am happy to say that they have disposable glasses for this, I walked out with a cup, free of guilt.
I would also like to note that this place made me discover the wonder that is a bagel with cream cheese, tomato, and cucumber- you have provided me with the recipe for many a homemade breakfast. -

From the outside Coburg Coffee House looks like a cute little cafe, it disappoints me that that vibe is nowhere to be found once you step inside. The decor was mainly art from a local artist, and the paintings were all kind of unsettling. It was difficult to enjoy my bagel and espresso macchiato while a fluorescent alien painting stared back at me from the wall. Far from a comfortable place to grab a cup of Joe with friends, the small, uncomfortable seats and tiny tables that are difficult to manoeuvre around make me feel uncomfortable.
The food and drinks are decent, if anything just a little bit overpriced. I've had problems with the condiment tray (specifically cream for my drip coffee) being empty. One treat that is delicious is the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I had one for breakfast the other day. Don't tell my mom.
Hot Hint: They sell organic and fair trade coffee by the pound and they will grind whole bean bags for you in the store. -

Great coffee, food and pricing!
Coburg Coffee is a great place if you are near Dalhousie University or the Robie Street and Coburg area. They have great bagel's that you can add cream cheese to or dress up to make a sandwich. I also like their muffins and cookies. The coffee itself isn't bad. It isn't impressive but it gives you what you need. The coffee house itself has as many chairs in it as one could fit. But if you need to "plug in" to use your laptop, there are only two or three strategic locations. This has, at times, forced me to leave and go to another Coffee shop because I needed to charge my batteries. That being said, they also have free wireless internet. A staple, in my book, to a good coffee shop.
The staff are friendly and sometimes smile. When they don't, they still have a pleasant, welcoming voice. The system for serving the public is simple and easy. If there is a big line-up for orders to be finished, they give you a number that you take to your table. They will then come, find you and give you your order at the table when its ready. A simple but great idea!
The seating isn't the most comfortable I have seen in a coffee shop but its not a turn off either. The coffee house itself is great but one word of warning is called for. If it is the summer and you need air conditioning, don't bother heading to Coburg Coffee. They have it but the windows are open and the air conditioning doesn't even make a dent in the summer heat.
I never shy away from Coburg Coffee. Its a great place to meet up with some people and have an informal meeting, the prices are fair enough so that you aren't going to break the bank having lunch, and the staff are very helpful and sometimes as quick as one would want. It definitely deserves its four stars but I hope, once air conditioning is better and they install a few more plugs or a power-bar, I can turn it to a five star. -

I really like the feel of this shop. Something about being on the edge of a university campus and filled with students deep in their assignments or discussions or just enjoying a bit of a break gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Maybe it's because I know I don't have to do any homework myself, I don't know. Anyway, I do feel at home whenever I'm here.
Lineups for service can be long, because it's popular, but the kids at the counter are usually pretty easygoing, so it never gets to the point of being irritating. The tuna sandwiches from here are my favourite thing. Nice, thick bread and tons of Mayo-y tuna.
Great place to sit and read or think or just daydream. -

I haven't seen this mentioned, so I'll add this: they have a delicious and filling treat called Pakora that is gluten-free! They are also conscientious enough to note that it is not made in a gluten-free facility, for those celiacs and others out there who are highly sensitive. I really appreciate that.

Worst "smoothie" I've ever had. Tasted like a 99 cent Needs slushie, and cost over 5 bucks. Never going back.

Another place to be tempted by cupcakes, damn! But I'll let it slide, because Coburg is one of the only good places to grab a bite or a coffee if you're in the Dalhousie neighbourhood. I don't know what it is about this school, but it's like a decent-food desert. A real tragedy for the students there, a group which includes my poor boyfriend, who frequently eats sandwiches at Coburg. Too bad they are a bit pricey ($7 or so for a panini), that's the main downside. Coffee here is really good, too. As proof, take the fact that the place is always packed with students. There are plenty of places to get coffee on campus, but this is one of the only ones that matters.
