Coaster's has become a mainstay among seafood lovers in Ottawa for decades. Unfortunately, its repuation as the best has outlived its actual quality. While it can still be counted on for good food, fair prices and decent prices, perhaps it was too use to being the best, took it for granted and became complacent in its solid reputation.
Still, I like to visit every now and then, and the service still remains to be one of the friendliest and quickest around. However, the server did mess up orders from our group of 7 during my last visit, but was rectified by an apology and a 25% discount from the manager.
As for the food, fish steaks are the safest bet and expertly done over a barbecue. For non-fish eaters, try their underatted and unheralded pizza's (a salmon pizza is also available - excellent), while the shrimp and scallop brochette is still liked by many, in my eyes it is not quite as top notch as it used to be.
Overall, coaster's is still a good place to go and have good seafood, though it has since been surpassed by newer, more edgier establishments. -

It's the Victoria Day weekend, and we are in Ottawa for the tulips. That was the first mistake as the tulips are all dead. The second mistake was going to a travel website for restaurant recommendations instead of Yelp. Yikes! So this website had glowing reviews of Coasters, and gullible tourists that we are, off we go.
It wasn't *terrible*, but we've had better. First the bread was so cold, it felt like it came from the fridge. The steamed fish basket was OK - it was fresh but very bland to my taste. The haddock fish and chips - nothing special, but I felt it was undercooked. I think maybe what made the whole experience worse was the service. Not once did she smile; plus no welcome, no thank you, no goodbye. Which is weird for a touristy place. Everybody else was cheerful, though. Maybe she was having a bad day?
So anyway if you're in Ottawa, suggest you get your seafood elsewhere (and go to Yelp first!).
