Booked this place based on good reviews on http://hotels.com and good price, then was appalled when the fiance commented on the awful Yelp reviews.

All I can say is, what are you people complaining about??

For what it was, this place was awesome. It was in a beautiful historic mansion. It was across the street from a subway stop. The room was clean, and it was cleaned daily. The window air conditioner worked like a charm. The bed was comfortable. The room size was totally adequate. There was free breakfast. No sign of any small crawlies.

Unbeatable for the price and location.

My girlfriend and I spent 4 nights at the Clarion and the stay was a very pleasant one. After reading many bad reviews we were really worried what hell we might experience but we were surprised very positively. We stayed in a newly renovated kingsize bed room on the 4th floor and it was great. AC, nice bathroom, flatscreen TV and this awesome bed. The young  staff was very friendly and always helpful. The breakfast, which is included in the very low price, wasn't the best but with croissant, muffins, toasts, eggs and apples good enough. Located directly next to the subway trips in Toronto are no problem. Most of the interesting stuff was in walking distance (under 5km).
I would stay there again and can recommend it (make sure to get a renovated room though).

    UPDATE:
    BED BUGS.

I wrote the review below first and upon leaving the hotel realized I had been eaten alive by bed bugs. I would not have known, except the friend I was travelling with had gotten them in NYC before. Perhaps they are not everywhere in the hotel, but who cares? Gross.
And if you DO happen to get bed bugs anywhere - go to Chinese pharmacy and get this cream called Piyan Ping - Camphor and Menthol. Cleared everything right up after trying other remedies.

    Shabby Chic fo' sho'

Well, at least in the basement rooms where we have been relegated to spend  three nights.

Upon check-in the clerk verbally noted that we had 'just made our reservations'. Which we did, via hotwire - somehow I feel this is why we were given the, ahem, SMALL subterranean rooms. They call the basement floor, floor 1, but they ain't foolin' me. It's BASEMENT, baby.

Meanwhile, in the SMALL lobby there were a gaggle of people crowding out the whole room which was, in a word, ANNOYING. Not the hotel's fault.
    But still. ANNOYING.
Especially after a looong day of travel

    In short:

PROS: Sort-of cheap- but not really cheap, decent location which I did not find scary at all, Next to a Tim Horton's for coffee, Good showers- hot and decent water pressure, decent Wifi. Meh decor overall and needs updating especially in areas like CARPET, and wallpaper. Nothing says WELCOME like peeling wallpaper, right? Quiet - at least in the basement level. The pillows rocked.

CONS: Basement-level rooms. SMALL rooms. Basement hallway smells like a** and the basement hallway carpet is slightly horrifying.

Would I stay here again? No. Not after the bed bugs.
No one puts baby in the basement!

I've stayed here twice and unless I hit the lottery probably will again. The neighborhood is colourful (ran into a cracked out rasta & a tranny within 15 mins of my first visit, sweet!)  Across the street I found some of the best patties & samosas you could ever ask for. It's very very close to the train station and shopping.
My first room SUCKED the second rocked!  If you need a place to shower & grab a bit of shut eye I'd say ok...

My friend (who stayed in a separate room next door to me) ended up getting bed bugs here.  Ick.

Full disclosure:  I did not get bed bugs, thank God.

We stayed here because we read Hemingway stayed here (about 90 years ago). It was not so great then and it's worse now. There wasn't much sound insulation to the next room and the room itself is not so great. The whole atmosphere is sketchy.

Toronto is one of the best cities in North America, for a place to stay, you can do much better than we did!

If you are interested in writing, you can stop by to just see. And if you are a cultural adventurer, it's an adventure.

The neighborhood where this hotel is located is scary. Yes. Scary. And I'm from Brooklyn, NY! My first night here, I decided to wander around to see where everything was, and I swear I saw a crackhead pop out of the bushes.

But, while the neighborhood was a bit shady, a plus is that it was located right next to a train station... and there was a McDonald's and a few other eateries nearby. Plus, it was in short walking distance to some great shopping!

The rooms could've been a tad bit bigger. The bathroom was decent... but I could've have done without the big ass spider that tried hiding in one of the corners. Hotel rooms have refrigerators and coffee makers. Overall, I didn't have any problems with the place. It was cheap, so you get what you pay for. Continental breakfast was included... and although it wasn't THAT GREAT, it was nice not having to pay for breakfast. The people at the front desk were very pleasant.

The halls smell like death. The room was tiny. Despite a lot of other promotional things I've seen on this hotel, there is not a microwave and fridge in every room.  There was construction outside our window that overlooked a massive hole.  The air conditioning was loud, the room was hot, and there was no way to open the windows (we could open the bathroom window, but again there was a massive, and loud construction pit under our window).  The staff was disinterested.  The wireless internet did not work for me at all.  I was not impressed with the breakfast which was packed of carbohydrates, there was little fruit or protein.  The parking lot was tiny and overpriced.  I had a difficult time getting my car out without nearly hitting several vehicles.

The only real redeeming aspect of this hotel is that it was easy to flee, close to the subway, and we didn't have to stay there all day.

The hotel is moderately priced, but I don't think it's a good value for what you do pay.
