I love this salon - the Queen St. W. location (haven't been to the other to have an opinion). I've been a loyal customer for at least 6 years. I've had experiences with three stylists.
First, the atmosphere...clean, modern, smells amazing. Aveda products are the studio line here and they have a nice selection for purchase up front. Your hair treatment starts with a brief stay on their couch at the back where you are offered coffee, juice, etc and can peruse a magazine or hair portfolio if you wish. Then you are treated to a really nice scalp massage/relaxation by your stylist. Your choice of three essential oils. I love this part - here's a tip - I find this is the best if you go earlier in the day as stylists have all their energy and aren't running behind in any way yet so you get more attention. Then the luxurious hair wash and off to the cut/style. I find the process quick but not rushed which is perfect as I'm usually ducking out of work to get it done.
One of the things I like about Civello is that they encourage you to change stylists if you're not happy. It's smart business of course to keep a customer but I like that they promote it. And we all know that stylists often hop shops so it's smart that they encourage you to stay should that happen to you. It did happen to me, the stylist I had been seeing left and I asked for a recommendation for someone else. They introduced me to the hair-stylist-love-of-my-life - Cheryl.
I have had the best haircuts of my life - consistently with Cheryl. She has and therefore understands my fine yet curly hair and has this amazing ability to cut my hair so that just when you think it should be time for another cut it grows out so beautifully I get more compliments three months in than three days in. She's professional and very talented. As much as I enjoy Civello...have to be honest...if she left, I'd find her.
I haven't had any other treatments there so can only comment on hair styling but based on those experiences I would definitely try the spa/hand/feet treatments some day. Reasonably priced with a good selection for any budget, a junior, medium or senior stylist as per your preference. Civello has something for everyone. -

One of the best hair salons in Toronto. I have been going to Civello for 4 years now and each time I go I am treated like a Queen! The staff are very friendly and you are given beverages while you wait for your appointment to start. It is a decent price for wash, cut, dry, and style - I am also able to book an appointment with the same stylist (Mae) each time.
I am really happy with this location and the staff is great! I am also happy with the result of my hair cuts every time! -

I have had cut and color by Allison several times now and she is a true pro!
My hair was box dried and many different shades of brown when I ended up in Allison's chair. She was able to bring my locks back to life in my first visit!! I now have a lovely shade of brown.
Would highly recommend her for both color repair and cut for thick hair.
Also, the salon it self is very nice! -

I've been getting my hair cut and coloured here since I moved to Toronto a few years ago. Aveda salons are usually a safe bet and so is this one. Overall, really happy with the service and would recommend it!
Really great:
- each appointment starts with an aromatherapy scalp/shoulder massage
-when you get colouring done, they often offer hand massages while you wait
-the 'chair' where they wash out shampoo/dye is a fully horizontal lounge chair
-as soon as you arrive, you put on a robe (to avoid getting hair all over your clothes)
-you're always offered tea/coffee/water on the way in, and a 'lip gloss' touch up on the way out
Not-so-great things to be aware of:
- If you're paying by credit card, you can't 'add a tip.' I don't understand this and almost every time I go in, we have a discussion about it. Tips can be paid in cash or added to the total on debit.
- they require a credit card to book your appointment and if you don't cancel with enough notice (24 hours I believe) you're charged for the appointment. I understand the concept, but it sometimes makes it difficult to make appointments. My job isn't really 9-5 and sometimes things happen beyond my control. Makes it pretty difficult to make appointments during the week. -

A few months ago I made a very important discovery that would end up changing my life forever: I got my first blowout. And suddenly, those ladies with the lustrous locks in the shampoo commercials had nothing on my strands, which took on a bouncy life of their own! Having lived for so long with rather boring straight hair, this was a revelation!
Prior to taking the stage in front of a bunch of strangers in Toronto, I figured a blowout might give me an extra pinch of confidence (you know, in case imagining everyone in their underwear didn't work.)
Mai went above and beyond the call of blowout duty for me (which I am grateful for because several hours later an unexpected on camera interview opportunity came my way and my hair still looked awesome!) She even put some makeup on me before sending me on my way.
I'd gladly put my mane in Mai's hands again!
Hot tip: Civello opens early so if you want to get your hair did before work, they can hook you up! -

yep five stars. Ask for Genevieve Gayer for color, she is a rockstar in the world of all things color, or as you spell it here in Canada... Colour.
Coming from the land of uber expensive cut and color San Francisco I can only praise and thank my lucky stars to have found Genevieve. Aveda products round out the experience, and the experience was enjoyable from the expert advise to the finished product. Tell her the Urbanfirefly sent ya. -

A girlfriend and I had appointments to get waxed here last week and I gotta say, the girls did a FANTASTIC job.
Stephanie was the one who took care of all the unwanted, and not only was she extremely efficient and fast, but she kept me distracted so I wasn't focusing on the pain.
In less than half an hour Stephanie had 'taken care of business' and had me on my way. During our session, she even suggested some tips so that I could get a good deal when I went to pay.
Both my girlfriend and I had an EXCELLENT experience here and Civello was the perfect stop before heading out for a night on the town.
Thank you Stephanie, Thank you Civello! -

One of the best salon/spas I've ever been to. The atmosphere is welcoming and utterly relaxing! The service is impeccable and well worth the price. Since it's an Aveda spa, you know the products are quality. The senior colorists are genius and make the most out of your natural beauty. They are consist with the services and I'm utterly pleased every time I leave the salon/The make-up touch-ups at the end of your service are the cherry of your beauty service sundae. Hands down, I recommend Civello to anyone and everyone.

I've been going here for 4 years and they know their coloring and cutting. Prices are on par with other nice salons. Unfortunately, my people here keep leaving or cutting back on hours. All the nurses I work with went to Joy for coloring- well they convinced her to go into nursing... Why? She was the best highlighter ever! I can't give you any names because Jed left, too. Linzee does my cut. Love her for long hair. Check it out.
For the spa part, I had a life-changing massage here. The therapists are more than just a nice afternoon. I learned more about my sports-related pains and aches and how to stretch it out before going for long runs. The front is full of Aveda products with nice smelling potions and split-end curing oils.Listed in: Welcome to the neighborhood!

Civello owns my hair. I've been going there for a few years. I used to go to the Rosedale location but now I go to the Queen West location exclusively. I use & love aveda hair products and I love my hairstylist. The staff at Civello are awesome - they are all friendly, professional and its like every 2 seconds, someone is offering you tea/juice. They also do amazing mani/pedi (they have massage chairs for pedicures) using essie nail polish (my fav!) I've also used their hair removal service and they use hard wax so the pain is totally tolerable.
Around Xmas time, they usually run a promo that give u $200 gift certificates for spa services when u buy $200 GC for hair services or products...how awesome is that?!? -

I couldn't be happier with my experience at Civello. I am always weary about decking out the money to pay for a haircut, but I can say with conviction that it was well worth the $60.
I was recommended by a make up artist to ask for Stacey. She was very sweet and attentive. She started off by giving me a back and head message (lovely!). I brought in a reference picture and she was happy to work with it. The cut is just fantastic and I am overjoyed that it turned out so well.
From the minute you walk in, staff are very kind. No one tries to sell you any products or convince you of miracle cures, although the people who work there are very happy to answer any of your questions.
If you are looking to get a great cut in the city, check out Civello! -
Review from Cat L.
The only problem with Civello is that I might have to move to Toronto so I can keep dealing with someone who understands thick, full, wavy hair.
This haircut is the first one I've ever had that manages to be edgy while working WITH my hair's natural texture rather than requiring a bunch of maintenance to go AGAINST it.
I'll plan my next visit when the exchange rate is favorable. When I went in 12/08, a haircut with tip was under US$60.Listed in: Because of Yelp!

I used to be a regular at Civello for years. ( And by regular I mean I was there every 6 - 8 weeks for a cut/trim) And then little more than a year ago I stopped going. Cold turkey. The reason for this was that the stylist I frequented and one hundred percent trusted with my hair, suddenly left, and informed me that she would no longer be working in the industry. I was crushed. This girl had been my hair guru for years, and now she had deserted me. I tried another stylist after her, but the results were so unsatisfactory that I gave up Civello.
After trying other salons a couple of times, I still hadn't found what I was looking for, but for some reason last week I decided I'd give Civello another try. And boy, was I glad I did! I hadn't realized how much I missed sipping tea while I waited to be seen by the stylist, or the head and shoulder massage you get before your cut. I was once again, excited about getting my hair did.
This girl was very good at listening for what I wanted, and did not take any artistic liberties with my hair, which I appreciated. She also gave me some tips on how to style my abundant hair, and avoid breakage, but only after I asked her, which means she had to anwer my questions or ignore me which would have been akward. So why four stars instead of five?
Mostly because of the stylist. She was talented and I'm happy with the job she did, however, I don't think she's the girl for me. She was pleasant enough, but not very friendly ans seemed almost as if she didn't want to be there. AT $75 a haircut, I'm expecting someone friendly and happy to be doing her job. But maybe, its my fault, and Im just spoiled from my past experiences at Civello.
Also, they are currently undergoing renovations, so expect your relaxing experience to be interrupted by jack hammering noises (seriously) and LOUD banging. The girl did say that these renovations were suppossed to be taking place after hours, but they were having problems with the contractors following the agreenment.
I will return to Civello ( I already booked another appointment) and give this stylist another try. Maybe she was having a bad day, with the renovation noise and all? After all, she did do a fantastic job. -

Hair is important - you have to wear it every day of your life (unless you're Patrick Stewart or Dr. Phil). That's why I don't mind paying a bit more for a cut if I know I'm getting my money's worth.
That's why I love, love, love Civello. For a hair cut, I pay about $70 with tip, but I have never, ever left feeling dissatisfied. I go to Trin, who specializes in shorter hair and she is fantastic. If I have a specific request, she does what I ask. If I'm not sure what I want, she'll give me some suggestions, I'll go with it and my hair will look fantastic.
The Civello experience is also great because you get a complimentary oil massage for your head before your cut and they use yummy smelling Aveda products that leave your hair feeling clean and fresh. Finding a hairstylist you trust is hard so that's why I'll fork over a little more for someone who's good at their job. -

This place doesn't need another good review, but whatever I'm going to write about it anyway!
The salon itself is awesome, I felt like I could have just hung out there all day. It smells nice, they play cool music, and they are offering you tea, water, etc. constantly.
As I was sitting down waiting to be seen I was offered tea, but the tea I asked for was being brewed. At least two different people apologized for the tea wait. When it was ready they brought it upstairs to me in my chair where my hair was getting colored.
I am (was) a color virgin and my colorist was really nice explaining all of my options and what he thought would be best for me. He mixed up the perfect color for me and it looks great.
As I was waiting the shampoo boy (sorry if thats not the correct term- I mean it lovingly) gave me a hand massage then a lovely head massage when he was shampooing/conditioning. He was so sweet- I wanted to be friends with him after about 30 seconds.
My hair was cut by Jason. He was great, I told him what i liked and what I didn't like about my current hair cut and suggested some slight modifications to my current cut to fix my current hair woes. The hair cut seemed to take no time at all but he did a really thorough job.
Both my colorist, the shampoo boy, and stylist gave me styling tips and tips about how to style my hair and what products to use. What i really appreciated was that while they recommeded the products in the store (Aveda) I didn't feel pressured into buying them whereas at most nicer salons I almost feel like you have to buy the products, sometimes they are even sitting at the register when you pay which then makes it super awkward to say no to buying the product. This may just American thing thought...
They have a nice selection of merchandise. As mentioned earlier its mostly Aveda, but they also sell Essie nail polish and it looked like they had some other goodies as well.
Every person I came across- there seemed to be a quite a few in there- was soooo nice and friendly but not fake nice- actually geniunely happy to be there which made me feel good about getting my hair cut there.
Best of all it won't break the bank. I got out of there for about $140 for my color and cut and my hair is long so that made the dye a bit more expensive.
Definitely check this place out! -

Civello is pricey but it's worth the expense. I've used their spa services (hair removal, massage & facial) as well as salon services (blowdry, glossing treatment) and they were all excellent. I adore Aveda products and often don't know which ones to use so the esthetician or stylist can guide you since they use the products all day long. The staff is very professional and courteous and you can tell they're used to dealing with megawatt clientele and celebrities in the way they treat everyone!

diversity disclaimer: i have silky and asian hair, as opposed to coarse and/or non-asian hair.
there IS a difference folks, and the hair dresser here only pretended to know it. make sure that - wherever you go - they know your hair type.
i don't have a problem paying a fair amount for a 'do. but when i could easily pay 500% less at a place in chinatown, markham, or yonge & finch for a style by someone who knows my hair type well, i will forgo the sex appeal of salons such as this one.
this cut particular cut ended with my asking for the blow dryer to set my hair on my own. not cool in temp, nor when i'm paying
two stars: for prettiness of the salon and pretty cuts on the head of my friends' heads (read: white). -

Of all salons I've tried over the years, Civello on Queen has definitely been the best (and consistently so). I've been going to the same stylist for almost 3 years and have loved everything he's done - and the pre-cut and blowdry head and shoulder massage and post-styling makeup touch-up are fantastic "gifts with purchase". The service from others in the salon is fantastic and attentive as well...everybody takes care of you and makes you feel relaxed and welcome - from the greeting when you arrive, to setting you up in the lounge-y waiting area, to checking in with you to get you drinks or magazines, to just engendering a really friendly and laid-back atmosphere instead of the pretentious and exclusive one that some pricier salons cultivate. Everyone is also very knowledgeable when it comes to the Aveda products available and will answer any questions you have but don't put pressure on you to buy.
I've also recently started going to the spa (located on the second floor). I've only been going for the 30-minute massage so far but it's been a great experience...my masseuse is kind, responsive and excellent at putting you at your ease. It's also not a bad price compared to some of the other quality spas in the downtown core. I highly recommend trying out their spa as well! -
Review from Seema M.
Always such a relaxing and enjoyable experience at Civello... their staff is professional, tidy and friendly. I have had three different stylists and they have all been great- from skill to personality. I have never used their spa services but will in the near future. The location is ideal as it is close to subway, streetcar access and street parking available.

I'm a huge fan of Aveda and Ray Civello's salons (i.e. Tonic in Montreal) so not surprisingly, I'm also a fan of Civello. Great haircuts, nice and attentive staff, relaxing atmosphere. Love the scalp massage too!

I am a big fan of the Aveda concept: earth friendly, natural ingredients, etc. so of course when I first moved to Toronto I looked up Aveda salons in the area. I am glad that I decided on this place. The prices are what I would consider standard. Yes, they are expensive as my roommate constantly points out, but for most salons outside of Supercuts, I have found that they charge a rate that seems relatively standard for Toronto. Anyway, normally I try to bring in a picture or have a precise idea of what I really want because the stylists cannot read your mind, but when I went in for the first time, I gave a very vague description of what I wanted to the colorist (as dark as I can go, but still look natural) and the color came out beautifully. I brought a picture to the hair stylist and described how I would like it a little differentlyl and she did a very nice job as well. I stayed with them for over a year, when in my quest to find something a little cheaper (I'm an every six weeks kind of girl) I went to the Aveda Institute (which I had been to in different locations and liked) and found that they were open on Saturdays! What luck! So, I'm a convert, if only temporarily. If I become disillusioned by the Institute, I'll go back.
