I've had my hair coloured by Byron 3 or 4 times now. the first time it was a bit of a mess. He highlighted it, did an overall colour and toned it. total cost came to ~$120, which is a GREAT deal. since then, i've simply been getting my roots bleached out & an overall toner. i'm usually in & out in 2 hours. the cost is $80 plus tax.
Civello has an upscale feel, with quality Aveda products, talented stylists, and a moderate price point. If you're looking for someone to help upkeep your fabulous blonde locks, Byron is the man. he's sweet & easy to chat with. -
Review from Meena A.
Since moving to Yonge St. Clair, I searched far and wide for "my spa". After trying 6-7 other places, I have settled on Civello. It is a nice walk from where I live and I look forward to seeing my aesthetician every month. I come here for a brazilian and eyebrow wax.
My favourite aestheician here is Julie, she does the quickest wax I have ever experienced. In half an hour, I am out of there. And somehow, she still manages to be detail oriented and perfect. I'm not entirely sure what kind of wax they use. I've asked a number of times and have always received different answers. What ever it is, it is the least painful wax I have ever encountered. Even if it wasn't for their service, I would keep coming back for the wax. I don't know if I can ever go back to the pain of regular wax.
They're also great with handling cancellations! No guilt and no hassle. I once cancelled an appointment one hour before it was meant to take place, and there was no cancellation fee. The lady was kind on the phone and she rebooked me for the next day without guilting me even the slightest.
AND you get a gift certificate after your first visit. AND the upstairs is like an Aztec sanctuary. Why wouldn't you come here! -

Talk about service to the nines!!
I came in for an ELEMENTAL MASSAGE for 90 Minutes, and I thought I was in heaven for 90 minutes plus... To be fair, I have to preface my bias, I work for a different location doing something completely different, but come on, the best is the best!
I came in and was very warmly greeted by the staff, who did not know me in person, but they greeted me warmly and escorted my upstairs to hang up my coat and to choose either a long or short robe. I love the ambiance of the Civello at the Rosedale location, it is old charm meets Indian healing. I changed and was brought to the sitting area where they offered me my bevvie.
I was greeted by Courtney who was so nice and spoke in such a calm manner, very soothing voice, that's the kind of voice I want to hear after a long work week! She brought me to the room where she allowed me to choose my aroma. I know from previous massages that I love Eucalyptus and Citrus - which she found for me, in Earth 12.
The rest of the post is not very long, because I fell asleep, HARD. She had the perfect amount of hardness to work the kinks out and the perfect amount of softness for the relaxation factor. After 90 minutes in heaven, I got up and felt so relaxed, to the point where I think I may render myself "addicted to spa massages".
The whole experience was great, I know I worked for a great company but to get to enjoy such amazing massages by great people is even better!
I highly recommend this location to anyone. Civello Queen will be my next spot to conquer, so stand by! -

I've switched to this salon in the last 6 months. I've had my hair washed, cut and styled. I've also had my eyebrows waxed and my makeup done (for business card photos). I've been super satisfied with all the services. The two different hair stylists I've used (Becky and Antonella) were both great. They were very helpful in giving tips and suggestions. And can I just say the head massage you get before having your hair washed is almost too good. I half expected my leg to start twitching like a dog's! My makeup looked great when I had it done (I believe her name was Lucy) and she gave lots of comments as well, but the conversation was a little awkward sometimes. The overall atmosphere and little touches (like the robes and drinks on offer) are great.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is price. It can be on the expensive side for sure, but quality. Also when I came the first time they gave me a $25 gift card, which seemed great and very thoughtful. However, when I got home I looked at the bill (it had seemed pricey) only to realize they had charged me for the "courtesy" gift card. -
Review from Julia D.
I have been seeing Julie for YEARS to do my wax. She is professional, quick, friendly and acts as my psychologist from time to time, while pretending that taking hair off my nether regions is no. big. deal.
I haven't lived in Toronto for over a year now and I still try and squeeze in an appointment with her because I know it will be WELL DONE. And the rest of the staff is reasonably civil too.
So yeah, it's not the cheapest wax but they use an excellent quality wax and it is as close to painless as they get. (I do not do the Brazilian though, I just do the bikini contour). -

Got my hair did!
Last Friday, I called in and was booked for an appointment within the hour. A walk down Bloor checking out the shops made the time fly and soon enough I was in Civello. The space is gorgeous and I was greeted immediately. Everyone was very excited that this was my first time. I was escorted upstairs to put my coat away, asked if I needed to use the restroom and given a robe. What a way to begin!
Back down the stairs, I was offered coffee, tea or water while I waited. I had some water and a few minutes later I was greeted by my hair expert. We went to her chair, talking about how I found out about Civello and what I wanted. She gave her honest opinion of what I wanted/what I had and I really appreciated it. She offered some suggestions I hadn't even thought of like softening my layers, how to deal with my long bangs situation, how I should part my hair and more!
Wow, I haven't even gotten to the haircut yet. That's because first I smelt three different fragrances for the head and neck massage she gave me. Yum. Then my hair was washed very well, no drip drops on the face.
Then the haircut! I told her that I liked her shoes and the conversation took off from there. No awkward silences and fun times. At one point I had to stand up so she could cut the length off because it went past the back of the chair. I've never had to do that before but my hair hadn't been that long for a while either. I got three inches off! She seemed surprised when I asked for this, apparently a lot of long-haired ladies would rather sacrifice health of the hair for longer length. But not me! I went for it.
The results? Still decently long with cleaned up bangs that are just long enough to put into a ponytail but short enough to look like sweeping, side bangs. Soft layers, just like she said. She used the round brush to finish it off so it was nice and bouncy all day long, even the next day! Leftover hairdo, I'm a fan.
All of this service and great haircut for something like $56, tax in! I tipped like crazy though. How could I not? Have some cash on you because that doesn't come as an option when paying with a credit card. You also get a 25 dollar gift card for being a first-timer. SUCH a good experience after I fell out of love with my past salon.Listed in: 5 Star Toronto******

Ooooo.
Walking in here is like walking into a different world. A european sanctuary of sorts.
I got my hair cut today, but I'll probably be back. Their sales scheme to bring me back worked.
It starts with a head massage. After a wash, she cuts my hair. I had asked for curly, except she did it too much more curly than I wanted. She spent more time in fixing it for me, essentially straightening it out again. It was my fault in not communicating my style properly.
After you get a make up touch up , light foundation and lip gloss. ($85 for a senior stylist)
They sucked me in again with a $25 gift card on my next service, which if I pre book I'll be entered into a draw for $100. AND then I got suckered into buying 2 shampoos and getting a free styling product for free.
Sigh.
My next appointment is a facial, and I'm looking forward to it.Listed in: Unexpected Delights!! (Perks!)

In my search of a moisturizing and restorative manicure, I booked an appointment to get the Caribbean Therapy manicure. I was surprised and ultimately disappointed with it. The aesthetician mixed a good amount of masque and then barely used it. When I remarked on the waste of masque left over, she said, "oh, we'll probably use it later". The available colours were limited in selection, although I was able to settle on a coral and after much hesitation.
I had an opportunity to give a more detailed opinion of my experience to the lady at the front desk. Perhaps she was a manager because she understood the impact of the poor experience I had just gone through.
I am glad I went and did the Caribbean Therapy but it's not worth the price. -

I've had my hair done at least 50 times in my life and I think this is the first time I've come home and cried out of sheer frustration. All I asked was to have my hair dyed a medium warm brown almost blonde, was very insistent that I didn't want dark hair because of my complexion and I got dark brown (almost black) hair. Then with the style all I asked for was it to be straightened, and she started doing it all flippy like an 80s newscaster woman even when I asked her to stop doing that half way through. SO FRUSTRATING and a waste of my money, I literally am going to another salon in the same day to get it fixed. Sad thing is that this is the second time I let Civello's have at my hair and both times they just blatantly ignored what I wanted (even though I brought pictures) and did what they felt like.

This will be updated as I go along, as I'm taking my bridesmaids to Civello in just over a week. Yesterday I had my hair rehearsal.
The atmosphere is warm and soothing and they pamper you a little -- take you upstairs to hang your coat, get you a coffee or a juice while you wait for your stylist.
I worked with Antonella and she was very helpful. I have short hair and wasn't really sure what to get done, but she let me look through a book and I found something. She knows what she's doing and it turned out gorgeous. (See my profile pic as of October 2010.)
I love it when I know from the start that a stylist knows her stuff. If I'm not sure, hairstyling can be stressful. When I am sure, as I was here, it's the most relaxing thing ever (soft lighting and incense notwithstanding).
The price is pretty much what I expected for a bridal party deal. The bride hair (mine) is more expensive than I expected but the quote for the rest of the party was pleasantly affordable.
More to come...
EDIT 28/10/2010
Right, I was going to update this. They did an awesome job with us on the morning of the wedding. We were all gorgeous and we actually got out of there earlier than we thought we would. There's not much to tell, we were not disappointed and it's still five stars. -

Like the Queen Street location, Civello Rosedale is pretty swank and attracts sophisticated clientele, but still manages to be relatively affordable and results in a wonderful experience each time.
This location in particular might be the most beautiful (though I have read great things about the Oakville location - it's a bit far for me to try) - when you go upstairs to receive your spa treatment, you're literally confronted by a Mayan empire of beauty. Brick walls, stone flooring (can be a little uneven to walk on with the paper flip flops they give you to wear!) and lots of torches and lanterns. Plus, the entrance to each spa room is a horseshoe shape (not sure if that's the right term) and has saloon doors.
Try their hair removal services - they use hard wax, which I've never encountered before, meaning there are no messy cloth strips to fuss with. They apply a liquid wax to your body, then wait a few seconds for it to cool/solidify and then tear the whole thing off, throw it out. It's fun and less painful than the paper method! Lots of precision work here.Listed in: Treating Your Body Right In…

After my recent drastic haircut (yes, folks, I now have bangs), I was taught the trick to maintaining your new 'do -- FREE BANG TRIMS.
Civello offers free bang trims between your cuts.
Yippee skippy!
This means no more late night 'trims' in the bathroom mirror, trying to duplicate the perfect bangs I always quickly get at the salon.
*May I add, they make it look so darn easy, who'd know it would be so tricky with those gardening shears I was using. sigh/
No appointment necessary, just walk in, and they'll try and squeeze you in with your fav stylist, but if you're not choosy like me, just pick the hottest stylist avail, and get him to do it!
You can go to any Civello location, too - not just the one that gave you your original lovely cut.
It's a little thing, but an awesome one.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I've had 3 different services here: a wax, a pedicure, and a haircut.
Wax: I notice that some reviewers have lauded the different wax Civello uses, which doesn't require strips. I found it to be more painful. WHereas with a strip, you would take off a large amount of hair in one go, with this wax some would inevitably be left over. It didn't seem as "thorough". The waxer was somewhat awkward as well- usually they will leave the room when you take off your clothes, but she stayed... It didn't particularly bother me; I just found it a little different.
Pedicure: quite good, no complaints here, and they were very clean and nice about letting me stay longer to let my toes dry. Pricey for what it is.
Haircut: Not the best haircut. I don't think the stylist cut my hair according to the type of hair I have.. it is shaggy looking and too "piecey" at the ends. I have a grown-out perm so the ends just don't look good being layered to this extent. I was quite clear that I didn't want too many layers, which I thought to mean I didn't want it to look very piecey or shaggy. It doesn't look good having grown out a little bit (a month, or less). It's not terrible, but again, I would go elsewhere for the price (higher expectations).
I liked the decor, but Civello is a little too busy for me. The spa is not as relaxing with the bustling salon below.
As a note, they do give you a 20 or 25$ gc upon your first visit, which is nice. But I will probably look elsewhere for my "beautifying" services! -

The hairdresser I got wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. She had absolutely no idea what hairstyle I wanted even though it was a very classy and common cut (the very same cut I had gotten for FREE from a student at Vidal Sassoon, who did an awesome job). It never occurred to her to shake the blowdryer when drying your hair so it won't burn your scalp. She would move the blowdryer up and down my head slowly so it would burn me.

I love this place...LOVE. It is my happy place. I've been getting my hair cut at Civellos for years (since high school, which was sadly quite awhile ago). Never, ever have they screwed up my hair (knock on wood). Everything about the place is luxurious and soothing and the stylists are pros. They're able to give you honest assessments of what will or won't work with your hair, what colors will work with your skin tone, how hard your hair will be to maintain post cut etc. And there's NEVER a hard sell on products (even when you go to the spa, which is a rarity). Customer service is excellent - they take the time to learn your name and after a few visits they know you. It begins to feel like you're visiting an old friend as opposed to your stylist.
It's definitely pricey though. You're looking at at least $60 for a haircut (prices are the same for men as they are for women). But it's worth it - you wear your hair everyday!
