Review from Vincci L.
Yes to boneless Hainanese chicken! Who would have thought, an inconspicuous restaurant would serve such flavorful, delicious, juicy chicken?
A cozy small space, this place was quite full on a Wednesday night. We shared an order of the individual sized Hainanese chicken and an order of the curry beef brisket, with a substitution of roti over rice for $1.00 extra.
The chicken was perfect; I can't complain about boneless chicken! I would say it's on par with Prata Man. The grated ginger dip and the sweet chili sauce were great complements.
The curry beef brisket had a decent amount of soft brisket; there wasn't too much fat like briskets from other places. The curry wasn't too spicy, which was perfect for me. I particularly enjoyed the roti- crispy on the outside, and a soft and fluffy on the inside.
Great service and a casual atmosphere, I'll definitely be back here for more Hainanese chicken! -

I came to City 1 Cafe, being enticed by their Hainanese chicken and affordable prices when compared to Cafe Delight. While the rice was leaps and bounds ahead of CD, the chicken just didn't hold up. Mine wasn't boneless, and was a bit fattier than I liked. The skin had a good texture, but the meat was a little on the dry side. The green onion ginger sauce was not as flavourful as what my parents could make.
The other dishes we had were good though. Five of us ordered half a Hainanese chicken (with 3 bowls of rice) to split, and a beef curry and some satay skewers as well. The restaurant was busy, but they never rushed us out. The refilled teas frequently, and the servers were always friendly. The bill came out to $11 per person, a great deal for lunch.
The place itself is pretty clean, but a bit hidden inside a plaza. While the curry and rice were winners, I think I'd still head back to CD for their chicken, even if it's a bit more expensive. Accessible via the #17 or 25 bus.Listed in: The Underdogs

Another great find thanks to the infamous Marc D.
The interior is super plain and the piano music is almost annoying, but the food is decent.
Get the Hainanese chicken and oiled rice. Likely the best I've had. Not sure what the oil in the oiled rice is (maybe chicken broth), but it sure beats Uncle Ben's.
The roti was nice and flaky, but the curry dipping sauce was not quite what I'm used to. The satays were alright.
I'll be back for more.
Be careful parking here though. Putting angled parking stalls within tight lanes is ridiculous.Listed in: Chinese Chowdown

Thanks to my fellow Yelpers, I decided to try this place based on their reviews. The food was good, but not to die for. The Hainese chicken/oil rice is comparable to Prata Man (Richmond) & Cafe D'Lite. The upside is that you don't need to drive across town to get your Hainese craving. The location is very convenient with easy parking as it is located in the Safeway plaza on King Ed/Oak St. The spicy green beans & roti canai was delicious! We also tried the satay skewers & they were ok -- only complaint is that they are too small. My 1.5 yr old son ate 3 skewers to himself, so if you are ordering, please keep in mind that 3 of these equal to 1 average satay skewer compared to other places. The pork ones were tastier than the chicken ones.
Solid food, but quite chincy on portion size. Great central location and very convenient parking. -

* Looks can be deceiving *
This little restaurant in an unlikely setting in a Safeway anchored strip mall is serving up some excellent Hainanese chicken. You wouldn't expect it from looking at the location outside.
They started off with a clear soup that was infused with rich flavours. Looks can be deceiving, and this soup had much more complexity than expected at first glance. It also had some nice surprises inside like boiled peanuts and beans. Great start. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
Although the rice looked straightforward upon first glance, it was nicely oiled. It was nicely infused with flavour and cooked perfectly. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
The star of the dish was of course the Hainanese chicken. They provided a very generous portion, and had taken the extra step of deboning it for you so that it was an even bigger portion than I thought upon first glance - those initial looks can certainly be deceiving! Yes, that plate of chicken you see in the photos is all meat - no bones propping it up! It was prepared perfectly. The chicken had the perfect amount of gelatinous skin and tender gentle ginger flavours. Of the two provided dipping sauces, the diced ginger one truly enhanced the flavours. Overall a very solid offering. Photos: http://www.yelp.ca/biz... and http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
Looks really can be deceiving! (And that is true for people too - I don't look too much like my photo either - it is much more flattering than reality!)Listed in: Thanks, Yelp!, Vancouver…

I agree with the first two reviewers, the Hainanese chicken was tasty, especially the rice. The laksa was also very yummy. We tried the curry chicken and the curry was very flavorful. There were nice touches to the dishes like toasted sesame, fresh cilantro, and ginger.
I would stay away from the onion pancake and the roti. They seem like something I can get frozen at T&T and make myself at home. The roti did come with a great dipping sauce though.
This place just opened December of 2011, so they might be working out the kinks still. I'm glad for the added food choice in my neighborhood. -

Delicious! Their dishes are packed with tons of spices to flavour the meats and their soup bases.
My co-worker and I went out for lunch and she had the curry chicken. She said to the waiter "I can't handle a lot of spiciness" and the waiter was first hesitant at answering her because it depends on how people interpret the level of spiciness each person can take in. It came and she said it was fine. The nice thing was that the waiter came back periodically to ask about our food & fill our tea. I had the Laksa Noodle Soup (it's my kryptonite). it was yummy!
I find that they have a huge selection of dishes, however, the menu isn't very detailed. For example my Laksa Noodle Soup. I was expecting an assortment of veggies & maybe a few tofu puffs. I didn't expect that it also came with chicken. Other malayian restaurants that I've been to have a variety of Laksa like chicken or seafood. So that's the drawback. How can I really complain about the place when the flavour is so over powering. flavour always win! -

I was craving for Hainanese chicken rice for lunch, that's why I went there and tried.
It located on King Edward Ave and Oak Street (inside King Edward mall), the interior is very simple but clean.
They served Malaysian and Singaporean dishes, their signature dish of poached chicken infused with ginger with rice cooked in chicken stock served with and fresh ginger, chilli and kecap manis sauces. It was so good and tasty!!
The Malaysian pancake was great and the satay was delicious too. The deep fried tofu was ok not smooth enough.
The Malaysian white coffee was milky and smooth..... awesome!!
