Review from Josh D.
On February 21, 2010 an entire SilverCity Mission theater, minus 3, simultaneously booed Team USA.
We were the minus 3, wearing our Team USA gear which clashed against a sea of red from EVERYONE wearing Team Canada apparel. We received boos of our own upon entrance into the theater. A young boy about a half-dozen seats from where we settled was dressed head-to-toe in Canada's colors, armed with a pointy stick bearing the Canadian flag, and excited like it was Christmas day. The boy made a gesture with the flag, a possible ode to Harry Potter but I'm certain meant, "You're going down!!!" Under his breath I believe it was finished off with, "You stupid head."
We risked life and limb to watch what ended up being Team USA's best game of the 2010 Olympics. We cheered as the Canadian audience was silenced. We then sunk quickly back into our seats hoping no one would throw anything. No one did and it was an absolutely wonderful time. Afterward, still happy with the results of a 3-5 win for the Americans, I acknowledged to the guy behind me either team starting a different goaltender would have resulted in an entirely different game. Being very sportsmanlike, our neighbor's to the north let us savor this victory, some correctly predicting revenge would come in the medaling round.
This is not just a story about a hockey game. It's a story about the desire to watch this game on a giant Cineplex screen. A memorable event such as this could not have been wasted planted in front of my 32" television! We'd planned this well ahead of time knowing the Cineplex theaters would be televising the Olympic Games. With the real thing going on just an hour away in Vancouver but being too poor to afford tickets, this was our opportunity to take part in the Olympic spirit.
Talk about spirit. Canadian patriotism was electric. It knew no borders. When we purchased our Team USA gear in Bellingham we were told they couldn't keep the Canadian stuff on the shelf.
Cineplex harnessed some of this energy and put it all on a giant screen with surround sound. A booth was setup inside the theater so people could get drinks and snacks without missing anything. The guy running the booth wore a Canadian flag as a cape. By the end of the game, his booth was surrounded by other Cineplex employees. Who could blame them or anyone else from watching the event taking place. I'm surprised employees from the Canadian Tire next door didn't pop in as well.
I'll forget about other movies I've seen but not this game and not where I was when it happened.
The opportunity to experience what I did is no longer there. However, everyone from Bellingham north should be crossing the border to experience the girth of a Cineplex screen, not to mention the amazing sound quality. Once you have it's impossible to sit in a rundown theater like all the Regal Cinemas in this area and have a good time.
I'm going back in 2014 for a Team USA vs Team Canada gold medal rematch. Until then, thanks for letting us watch our team win the preliminary game without any bodily harm. -

Comfy seats. Competent staff (95% of the time). Its a toss up if you end up with a mostly empty theatre or a packed one. I miss NY Fries/KFC/Pizza Hut but now that I'm not eating carbs it doesn't leave me quite as sad as it used to. It would be nice if they had juice or milk options for their kids meals, but that's cineplex corporate I imagine.
