I went to Cilantro for the first time last week. I was so glad I finally checked this restaurant out - I had a delicious meal! We sat in the upper level and found the place so cozy. I love that I can watch the chefs prepare my food from scratch; I was observing all the fresh ingredients that were putting in my meal. The pizza oven is adorable too!
For my appetizer I had the goat cheese. It came with Crostini, arugula, sliced pickled onions and a delicious spiced pistachio sauce. It was delicious, best comfort food ever.
For my main I had the seafood pasta (cannot remember what it was called though) - with prawn, lobster, giant scallops and a lemon sauce. Soooo good. I couldn't finish it all, as it's rich, so I took some home and ate it later that night.
The meal was very filling and prepared well. My friend had a BLT on pesto flatbread with arugula and really enjoyed it as well. Meal with a glass of wine came to about $75. A bit on the pricier side, but for the fresh ingredients, the preparation and the ambiance - it's about on par with any other similar restaurant in the downtown/beltline. Our server was attentive and gave me the recommendation for the lobster pasta, which I was definitely glad I picked. I'll definitely come back - if even for the goat cheese! I'm drooling thinking about it right now! -

I saved Cilantro for my 100th review on purpose so I can say this:
I LOVE YOU CILANTRO
At the risk of repeating myself, Calgary has a tendency to abandon it's history which is such a mistake because it's so wonderful to have places to go to that can survive the evolution of a city and provide you with a sense of nostalgia. Cilantro's has been in Calgary for 22 years!! I have a specific memory of my mom and dad taking my brother and I there it's first year open and therefore always associate it with the movie "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" as that's what we watched after our dinner out.
I of course can't remember what I ate then but I can speak to what I ate the other night. We had a very simple meal which is probably what I like best about Cilantro, the surroundings are beautiful, the patio is to DIE for, and the food is spectacular, and rightfully so after 22 years. You don't have to spend a fortune to be dazzled by your meal! I can think of very few places like that in Calgary who offer that experience.
We shared a smoked salmon and rye bread appetizer which was absolutely divine and then split a famous Cilantro wood fired pizza which make all the new fancy pizza places in Calgary look like amateurs. The service was wonderful and both times I have been there in the last few months that has been the case.
I would say if you were looking for your next meal and want to skip the hype and buzz of Calgary's newest and prettiest spot (which often leads to disappointment) make a reservation at Cilantro. You won't be disappointed!Listed in: Why go new when you can go…, Get What You Pay For!

Review from Melanie J.
This place has the honor of being the possessor of the first wood fired oven in Calgary....
The atmosphere is very intimate and with candles lit, very romantic. I hear there is a great patio, but it was a little too cold to check it out the night I went.
Just to let you know, everything is a la carte on the menu. In addition to the variety of pizzas available, the wine selection is quite extensive and the waiter very well versed as to the pairings. We decided to order several appetizers and have our meal "tapas" style and finishing off with the pizza. When you want to try a little bit of everything and you're with a willing partner, this is the best way to go....in my opinion.
We started with the wild mushroom vegetable cream soup....rich, creamy, yummy. Then we followed up with the fresh mussels in the black bean cream sauce....can I just say scrumptious? Then our greens....young spinach greens, tarragon vinagrette, crispy pancetta, figs, toasted pecans and goat cheese - lemme say I could make my meal out of this refreshing salad....never had figs in a salad and it was just right with the tarragon vinagrette. For pizza, we had the cappicola ham, tomatoes, roasted peppers, provolone cheese on a pesto crust....the crust could've been crispier, but it was still very good.
The only drawback was the amount of time it took to get our food and check...I guess it was really okay because we really wanted to take our time between the dishes and just enjoy each other's company....anyone else who may be starving may be quite annoyed.... -

The food was great!
I also agree with previous reviews about slow service. I think it took 15 minutes to be asked about drinks from when we sat down, and took about 20 minutes to be asked for our order. I also had to flag down the hostess for our bill because our waiter disappeared.
I will probably go again if I had a lot of time reserved for dinner. -

I hate when a waiter destroys a nice evening out. Is it hard to say, "Hi" when you come up to the table, return to ask how to meal was, and promptly return once bringing the bill so we can actually pay and leave. I won't let him ruin this place for me though! It was great food, good ambience. The clientele was a little, well.. they were calgary, and I know you know what I mean by that.
Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu, this would be a great place to hang out with a couple of friends in the summer for good food and great conversation. -

I'm a big fan of their pear and gorgonzola pizza with pine nuts. It pairs really nicely with a nice glass of wine. They have a woold burning oven so the pizza is pretty good. I've also tried their capicolla, tomato and pepper pizza. It was good.. but not as good as the pear and gorgonzola.
I love the ambience at Cilantro, both inside and outside on the patio during the summer.
The only downside is that it is hard to find parking around this place. They have very limited parking at the back. -

Great night out here, everytime. Some tips:
1) Eat upstairs - or on their patio in the summer. Much cooler, less formal atmosphere.
2) Chicken and Panceta pizza - DO IT! Unreal.
3) They have some sort of hot-chocolate cakey dessert that was mind blowing. -

Always a favorite on my list of places to go. Sitting upstairs is always entertaining and cozy! Wine list is incredible, and food is even better. We always have the same server, which is nice. I guess it just tells you that the owner's value him as much as the clientele does.

I am obsessed with the spinach penne and turkey meatballs at Cilantro as well as the pizza. They are excellent. The food is great, simple but fresh ingredients and good presentation. The interior of the restaurant is very comfortable and a diner can easily spend a few hours here. The wine list is good.
