I cannot believe I am doing this review, but I am.

The only fried chicken I used to eat was my ex mother in law's puerto rican style fried chicken. And the chicken/waffle combo at Hash House a Go Go. THAT IS IT.

Darcy and the kids eat here once in a while, I would refuse and eat a chicken burger instead. It's not that I didn't LIKE fried chicken (even though I would say I hated it), it's because I was afraid that I was going to like it and have to say "OMG THIS IS GOOD". Well, Superbowl Sunday came and Darcy ordered some chicken. I had 2 pieces. It was good. It was greasy. Really, how can fried chicken not be greasy? And then he had to go and make his own biscuits and gravy, so I mean how could you not eat the chicken?!

I will not be indulging in this fried chicken too often, but now I can say I like it and not 'ewwww' when I see them eating it.

I've noticed the decline in quality lately.  The skin is not so crunchy anymore.   The last four times I was there, I had a huge tummy ache after eating their chicken.
I have this chicken once in a blue moon.  It is good when made right.
I usually go through drive-thru or take out.  The restaurant is very dirty and you stink like chicken fat when you leave.
I find it a crock of shiat that they ask you to do a survey then ONLY give you free chicken dinner IF and only IF you purchase an item and drink.  RIPOFF!
There used to be a crabby old lady that worked there, but did not see her recently.  YAY!
I find that the price keeps going up and we are getting less value.  It's now $19 for 10 pieces.  It used to be $13 for 10 pieces.  Why the big jump in price?
    It's now open 24 hours.

There is a lot of bad fried chicken out there.  It's too bad because chicken is the perfect meat to fry, it comes with its own coating of fat between the skin and the meat.  The most common problem is that the breading is heavy and needs to be cooked more to be palatable.  Unfortunately, this leads to overcooked meat.  Leave it under a heat lamp and the situation gets worse.

This chicken kitchen knows to dredge the meat in seasoned flour to dry the surface of the skin then use very hot, day old oil.  A good fry cook knows that fresh oil is weak oil and Church's knows this too,  Now you are talking about a very crisp crust and soft, juicy meat, where the fat between the skin and the meat is rendered but not rendered useless.

If you don't believe me, take it from the toughest critic.  My 10-year old Natalie, says "If they serve chicken in heaven, they get it from the Kingsway Church's".

Went here at around 11pm.  To be honest the chicken is pretty standard.  Good, not the best ever chicken.  The fries were nothing to write home to and the gravy is subpar.  Worse than KFC.  If I had done the drive thru, I'd probably give higher stars.  But this time, for some reason, I decided to eat in.  The place has a distinct smell of bleach.  Also, don't bother using the bathroom.  It's disgusting.  Highway rest-stop gross.   I know it's east kingsway and all, but still.

Lately, I've been harping on friends and tweeting to strangers to try to discover the best fried chicken in the city. No establishment seems to want to lay claim to this territory, but three places consistently get mentioned amongst people I know: L.A. Chicken, Duffin's and Church's. I usually steer clear of fast food, and for over 20 years of living here had never been to Church's. Last weekend I gave it a try.

In the back, racks of previously fried chicken pieces laid waiting to quickly fill the next walk-in or drive-thru customer. Every customer knew exactly what they were doing. No dawdling, no indecision.
I ushered myself aside, and when I was ready: "Two pieces, spicy, upgrade one to a breast please." This upgrade, I discovered, would take 15 minutes to complete.

I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't overwhelmed either. The taste is all in the coating. The chicken itself is a bit bland, the outside a bit over-fried. Spicy really means spicy, and it had a good amount of bite.

I was confused by the sizing of the pieces, until I realized that it seemed that they cut the breast in half. It was smaller than the thigh.
I then remembered that they called it "white meat" on the menu and not "breast" so I'm sure they can get away with it (although the cashier called it a breast).
I tried the corn on the cob, and it was the worst I've ever tasted. Soggy, dissolved. I think they have it sitting in water all day, trying to turn it into polenta. The corn deserves zero stars, but I'll consider this a chicken review only.

Do yourself a favour. Skip the combo meals, and go straight for the individual pieces. Two pieces will cost you just over $3, but the combo with fries and a small pop is $6.99.

I'll continue my quest for chicken, but I don't think I'll be making a habit of going to Church's on Sunday.

I love this place. The chicken is better than KFC in my opinion. I love the new 24 hour drive thru (It's great for those late nite cravings considering the golden arches are the only alternative in this neck of the woods at 3 AM). The chicken is juicy and not overly battered. The fries are OK not great. The combos are decent considering you can can 4 pieces, fries and a small drink for under $10.

Church's chicken has the BEST deep fried chicken. If you like spicy food, you have to try their spicy chicken drum sticks and thighs. It's not just the lightly spiced ones - they can get quite spicy!

Church's spicy thigh burger is quite the yummy one. There's a tang of spice to it - but it's nice and juicy! If you order some zucchini sticks to it - SO GOOD!
