I have always been a sucker for really good Mexican food. A well made guacamole and salsa, moist meats drizzled with hot sauce all wrapped in a soft shell or crispy taco. The perfect meal for hot summer nights. Not too heavy but delicious and filling.Vancouver hasn't exactly been getting the summer they were hoping for this year. So in the interest of positive thinking, I highly recommend you plan dinner at Chronic Taco today. Why? because it is Taco Tuesday! Add on a margarita to your tacos and we can pretend that we are actually getting that sweltering heat that we have to seek cool refuge from.

My first encounter with these guys was three weeks ago and I am totally hooked. Like pretty much all of my favorite haunts, Chronic Taco keeps it fresh. They make their guacamole and salsa right in house. This has become probably the most important detail of any Mexican food I eat. You can't imagine what a difference fresh vs jarred makes in these items. Once you cross over to fresh, you won't go back.

My local Chronic Taco is located on 382 W Broadway. More like a Mexican sports lounge than a fast food style shop. The bar is fully equipped to facilitate you and your crew with margaritas, coronas, and numerous drink specials to accompany their amazing fare. With multiple T.V.s covering the walls, it is no surprise how these guys are packed on Canuck game nights. The walls are covered with graffiti with a "Taco Thug Life" style. They have even provided a cooler filled with ice water and lemon slices for those looking for a virgin beverage option besides their fountain drinks. Their menu is pretty vast and offers a ton of options. But my focus today...is Tacos!

Saunter on up to their counter and choose your filling. You can choose from Carne Asada (Marinated Grilled Steak), Pollo Asada (Marinated Grilled Chicken), Carnitas (Slow Cooked Pulled Pork) Al Pastor (Spicy Marinated Pork with Pineapple and Onions), and is also available with grilled or beer battered fish and shrimp. After choosing your meat, you can then have it topped with fresh guacamole and salsa (yes to both!) Then have fresh lime juice squeezed over your veggies and cheese and your taco is ready.

Although I did manage to try all of them over the last couple weeks. There really wasn't one flavor that I wouldn't have again. If you have been following my blog, you know I am addicted to pulled pork, so yeah I needed to try the Carnitas, which were juicy and awesome. The beer battered fish taco is also particularly good and should be ordered "Baja" style. It will come stuffed to the brim with veggies and drizzled with an awesome Baja sauce. It has the perfect kick and amped up flavor. Chronic Taco have been able to fill the perfect niche in Vancouver for super fresh and delicious Mexican food. As I am typing this, I have begun to fantasize about them and pull together a group of people for dinner there tonight.

Being spoiled by Chipotle in the states, we weren't expecting too much from this place, but wanted to give it a try as there have been a bunch of mexican joints opening up in the broadway area. Overall the food was ok - I had a pollo burrito and my wife had the pollo tostada bowl. Portions were decent, but a bit on the salty side. Probably wouldn't go back.

In terms of the actually place, it's actually a pretty chill hang-out, with tons of TVs, plenty of seats, jammin carribean/reggae music, and they serve beer.

The food is still only okay, but great place to take in a game.

Lots of tv's all the way around, and you can always grab a pitcher of beer, or bottles of Heineken.

We used to hang out here all the time before moving to Burnaby.  The waitresses are a blast and remember your name and drink order on future visits... the food is awesome, they have booths for big parties of people and there are so many TV's for watching a game.  The pricing is great and the area is local to west side and downtown. They do close at midnight which is kinda' lame but everything else about this location is great. We have tried the Chronic Tacos on Granville and in New West and they are not nearly as awesome.

    I'm not going back.

There's nothing but empty shells of people working there.

The ordering line was so slow - obviously they were not organized and it looked as if no one knew what they were doing.  It took almost an hour to wait for 5 people in front of me to ORDER (not to get their food, just to order!!).  2 people in front of me left for Wendy's.

After waiting for almost an hour, waiting & getting my order was a challenge because after they take down your order, they don't take your name, so when an order is ready, people are rushing to the counter claiming watever comes out to be theirs.  Chaos.

The staff behind the counter is expressionless and wont even look at you when you order - how do they run a business?

When I finally got to eat - the food wasn't that great - it's ok (probably because waiting hour for food - everything tastes good) but it's not worth waiting an hour for more.  Red Burrito and or Mucho Burrito would be a better choice and less hassle.

I note that there is a LOT of seating available, but when I was there, I doubt there was any time for people to actually sit and eat after they get their food - most people probably had to leave once they got their food.

Big sets, tasty food and a great nod to the local surf/board culture in the city.

This place is good but ordering always seems to be a problem for me here as seemingly every thing you can order has a few other options to hastily be decided when you find out/ remember them at the counter. As you're thinking the line behind you huffs and the Burrito Joe looks on at you indignantly like "Dude, you really should know this." I'm sorry Joe I really should, but I'm still kinda stoned and beans or Spanish rice options sound like a big deal.

Certainly worth a grab if you're around Broadway city hall, but beware there's sometimes a whole line of people like me.

First of all, there were about 7 people in front of us. It took us more than 15 minutes to get through the line. They had one person at the grill, one at the register, and then a really really slothlike slow person making the actual burritos. He was so painfully slow to watch I was getting an anxiety attack standing there! Mr. Sloth would take about 45 seconds to squish all of the burrito contents into the middle, another 15 to stretch the wrap around it, then another 45 seconds to roll it up. Have you seen those guys at Chipotle? They make a burrito in about 12 seconds. I love it!

The lady at the register would just stand there talking to the customers waiting for their food. I think she really needs to start making things go faster and learn how to make a burrito or a taco!

Slowness aside, I was really hoping it would be worth the wait. The rice was bland, the beans were bland, and overall it just wasn't that good.

Sorry Chronic Taco. You need to learn how to make things speedier and more efficient!

This place reminds me of a mix of Mucho Burrito and Red Burrito; between the two restaurants, almost the entire menu, fixings and sauces at Chronic Tacos are covered. Taste-wise though, I thought it leans more towards Mucho than Red.

I ordered a grilled fish tostada bowl (no dairy), and it was incredibly beautiful. Everyone in line ooh'd and aah'd at my bowl and it made me feel quite proud of m'self, I must say. I almost didn't want to dive in, but you know, then I waited half a second and started stuffing my face. It was pretty good, but the fish was completely, totally, rock-hard overcooked. What a waste! I also wasn't thrilled with the bowl itself, I found it a bit greasy. Everything else was good enough.

Despite just so-so food, the service was amazing. I was waiting for a friend to show up and one of the staff brought me water and a newspaper while I waited! For a self-serve restaurant, that kind of blew me away.

Walking towards the skytrain station afterwards to head back to my office, my belly distended in a not-so-pleasing manner, I passed La Taquera and found myself kinda wishing I'd eaten there instead. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to return to Chronic if the mood strikes...

Having a husband that's from California, it seems that there is a constant mission in our household to find authentic, delicious Nor-Cal style Mexican food in Vancouver. When we passed the Chronic Tacos on Broadway one day, the huzz got particularly excited because this is a chain he recognized from his hometown (although, admittedly, he never ate there due to countless other Mexican options). At last, we thought, our search was over.

One evening, while hanging out with another Nor-Cal expat, we decided that it was high time to give Chronic Tacos a whirl. (Pun intended. You're welcome.) Although the others opted for the classic burrito, I tried one of their tortas as I had never had one before. The burrito-eaters thoroughly enjoyed their meal, although I can say I wasn't overly impressed by my torta. It tasted like a white, floury bun stuffed with taco fillings, which in retrospect is pretty much how it's described on their menu. I guess I was hoping it would be closer to a tamale, which sadly it was not.

All in all, the food is not bad. I'd say it's in the same class as Red Burrito, although their menu has more options, including more authentic Mexican meat options. I'd be willing to give Chronic Tacos another shot, although next time I will stick to a more classic menu choice.

Chronic has a good thing going. Tacos at not bad price and big-ass burritos. For best flavour, I highly recommend ditching the wrap and shoot for the taco bowl. Not because of a tasty deep fried bowl. Those are kind of shite at the best of times. But I pulled apart my wrap and just ate the inside.

HELLO TASTINESS!! Where have you been hiding the whole meal? The tortilla blands down what is otherwise awesome flavour.

Go for the Al Pastor (marinated pork). By far the best thing on the menu. Fish was okay, but had that 'fishy' taste (IE frozen).

This is a place for buddies. Wives are not feeling the taco love.

This place is awesome if you realize you're going to a place owned by Wee Man and called CHRONIC TACOS!
The staff seem baked fairly often but they're nice enough.  If you're in a huge hurry or looking for the most professional taco slingers in town, this might not be the place.  That being said if you want a good value (Sometimes the portions I get are so massive I KNOW the person making them has the munchies) and some decent food this is a good place.  The fish tacos are great and the chicken is decent.  The steak can be quite tasty but I'd avoid the spicy variety.  I like spicy but the time I had it there was no flavour to it, just spice.
They show the games and have some beers on tap and the environment is really friendly and casual if you want to hang out.  That's not so much my scene though....
I usually either cook at home or go out for a real "experience" unless I've been busy all day and am in need of sustenance.
For me this place is great because its open late and its an option that's slightly healthier and even cheaper than getting pizza or food form a chain like McD's or Wendy's.
Gotta also mention that the Taqueria down the street (on Cambie)  has some tastier tacos... but the value isn't even close to the same and they aren't open for extended hours.  If a friend were visiting I'd take'em to the Taqueria, if I'm on my way home from a show or am strapped for cash Chronic wins.

With La Taqueria so nearby, Chronic Tacos has only got price going for it -  you get massive piles of rice and beans with any given meal but the quality of everything is definitely sacrificed.

Personally, I'll take quality over quantity.

Huge piles of food =/= good.

"These tacos are seriously addicting!"  "OMG, Chronic Tacos is SOOO good!"

I'm not sure what the fuss is all about.  These tacos were seriously average.  The tortilla or taco shell could have been grilled a little longer.  The chips tasted a little stale as well.  The meat was tasty and I wouldn't say no to eating here again, but it's overrated.

This is not your average taco chain. Chronic tacos in my opinion is healthier, fresher and just well over amazing compared to taco bell etc. my boyfriend and I walked into this restaurant not knowing a single clue what to order! The lady in the back where you order recommended two of the best and most popular tacos. One taco was baja styled beer battered prawns in the soft taco the other battered shrimp! Honestly we thought it was going to be revolting but to our surprise it was fantastic. It met as well as exceeded our expectations. This place def should be given a chance.

Surf shack themed fast food joint slash sportsbar. OK, whatever. I think one of the owners of the chain is on Jackass. But I've been hooked on the Baja-style fish taco (deep-fried) since the first time I came here. I've tried their other tacos - Carnitas, Al Pastor - but I always have to get a fish taco too.

The best value strategy for Chronic Taco-ing to go with someone and share the combo meal add-on: a big bag of tortillas and salsa and bottomless fountain pop. If we're really hungry, we get the Spanish rice and refried beans  too. The boys at the counter will let you get half-and-half black beans and refried beans.

The guys making the tacos are all really friendly, although the cashiers are a wild card. One guy gave us a "public service worker" discount because my husband works at the hospital. One guy was a little stoned and tried to charge for three burritos instead of three tacos. Another girl asked whether I wanted salsa with the chips. Duh. Moral of the story, pay attention when you pay your money at Chronic.

A group of us ended up at Chronic Tacos when the line at La Taqueria was complete insanity.

I was pretty excited, because I've been hearing how good it is for months but hadn't had a chance to stop in yet.

After standing in the slowest line I've ever stood in IN MY LIFE for food, I finally got up to the front to order and went with a Bean Burrito. I could barely hear the guys working the counter because I'm pretty much deaf and they were mumblers, plus it was kind of loud inside. Eventually some kind of burrito was made for me, paid for, and I went to eat it.

It was okay. I've definitely had better but everyone really seemed to like their tacos, so maybe that was the trick. I'm willing to go back and give it another shot because the burrito was pretty dull, but only if someone else wants to go.

Chronic Tacos didn't impress me in the slightest and I can't see myself wanting to come back on my own when La Taqueria just opened a location down the street and the magnificent Budgie's Burritos is off in the other direction.

    Their burritos here are monsterous!!!

Ok, for people that have never stepped foot in here... Walk in, line up, and as you approach closer to the counter you'll see the menu.  Order, pay, and then fight for your seat!!!  Not sure how how busy this place gets, but it was packed when I was here.  I guess most of the credit would go to Groupons cause it they were expiring.

Huge burritos stuffed with rice, beans, choice of meat (I got the fried beer batter fish), and veggies.  Eh, it was alright.  It was much more enjoyable looking at this novelty giant burrito than eating it, however they do have a good selection of bottle hot sauce that you spice up things with.  Much better with the hot sauce in it.

It is a pretty hefty meal for one person if you get the burrito.

Oh btw, they have water (with citrus fruits in the jug) at the separate bar that you can serve yourself.  And yes, separate bar to order your drinks as well.

Chicken in the enchiladas was desert dry.
    Carne Asada Burrito was bland.
    Salsa was pretty good.

I guess it's an option if you're into cheap, large portioned, mediocre food.

    Five stars for flavour!  --that's flavor for my U.S. friends  ;}

Yes I was a Chronic virgin.  While I had read countless reviews, I just never got around to check it out until today and it was worth the wait, let me tell you.
I was so stoked to see the words "gluten free" written up on the side board, but of course I was cynical about what I would get.  I had the chicken, re-fried beans and rice on a bed of lettuce. That doesn't sound very exciting but let me tell you it was ! The minute I dug in I moaned "mmmmmmmmmm...!" Oooh baby.

This is the best we've had north of the 49th parallel. The big guy has been craving a 'real' burrito lately, and we started to think we'd have to go over the border for it.
Not only does the food excel in quality but it's also one of the smartest business ventures I've seen on a smaller scale. There's a bar in there for one thing, and about 9 flat screens!
    Holy cow.

    We'll be back.

*ps. to the 4 insanely 'cute' (-er I mean 'frighteningly handsome')  boyz on the Harley's who left because the line was too long, to go to Flatburger.  -Mistake!

2 fatty taco's later and I was full. The meat is flavourful and they stuff those taco's to the brim.

What bugs me? The name. That's just me. All I can think of is a bunch of high kids cooking my food, which, really I wasn't far off. But that's okay, it was good. And also, don't order the margarita! Weakest one of my life.

Obviously not the best mexican food I've had in my life but pretty tasty and satisfying. Friendly staff that seem like they're having a good time. They also have longer hours and wicked drink specials every day of the week.

I wanted to like this place.  I was in the area with a friend doing some shopping and we stopped in.

Unfortunately the atmosphere of the restaurant prevented us from even trying the food.

There was some extremely loud, weird dance music blaring.  It was hot, and neither of us felt like sitting in that environment for 30 minutes.

There's definite a vibe present.  The question is do you want to alienate potential customers by creating this vibe?  They definitely lost out on our business.  A few years ago I probably would have stayed and tried it, but I'm at the point now that if I find something unpleasant, I move on.

Hard to peg the place...definitely not Mexican, more Mexicali... Some people call it the Subway of Mexican food, and that's not too far off.
I've had some good burritos there and just average ones.  Lots of quantity, ok quality....something just fails to make this a fav though, but if I had to put my finger on the reason...  I would say it was the inconsistency.

I'd heard a lot about this place from friends. I bought a couple of their groupons and we figured we try it out. For $16 we each got a pulled pork taco loaded with trimmings and a plate of cheese nachos with a side of guacomole. We were both stuffed after eating.

The tacos were good, soft shell which I like. The nachos were just chips with cheese melted on them but hey, it's chips and cheese so nothing wrong there. I make Mexican style food at home quite a bit and I think my cooking rivals this. That said, it's the best fast food I've ever had. Everything tasted very fresh. Well, it's kind of fast food. The staff all look like they've been toking in the back and nobody's moving with any great speed but they're all smiling like there's no tomorrow!

I just saw that a Chronic Taco's opening on 4th at Burrard which is in my hood. I can imagine making a pit stop here once in a while. The price is definitely right.

So. It's SORT OF good value for the amount of food you get but it's too much food, and it's a little bit pricey for what it is: pretty average fare. That's why I say "sort of good value".

We ordered 3 tacos (pork, shrimp and fish) and some burrito, which was massive as is, and then my friend decided to get the meal as well which was ridiculous. But with three of us, we managed to eat most of the meal. It seems like a decent place to watch a game and if you're really hungry. But now with the new La Taqueria around the corner, there's no reason to come here if I had a sudden craving for Mexican. Our group collectively considered rating this place 2 stars because of the staff though.  While he tacos and burritos were alright, the service was pretty lacking. It was oh-so-slow despite the half a dozen staff milling about, and there was a lot of communication fail and mix ups going on. Very inefficient. The food was okay, the location is convenient, the large TVs look promising but so are a lot of other places.

It's good for what it is.  Is it my favourite place?  No.  Would I go out of the way to come here?  No.  Would I go if I was in the neighbourhood?  Yeah, sure.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Indoors Toque Wearing Dude at the counter had been partaking in at least the Chronic part of the establishment's name.  Perhaps he also had a Taco to round things out after he got the munchies.  Whatever the case, he was a bit out to lunch.  But at least he was friendly.

I had a chicken taco and a fish taco, as well as a small tortilla soup, just to try a bit of everything.  The soup was forgettable, and by the time I finally got through the line and paid and sat down to eat it, it was practically cold.  I wouldn't recommend the soup.  My tacos were okay.  They were good for what they were.  Mexi-cali tacos.  These aren't your authentic Mexican tacos, but they are a lot better than Taco Bell.  The choice of topping was nice, and I liked the mix the other counter guy suggested for my tacos.  The medium salsa wasn't hot in the slightest, so I'd go with the hot next time.  Thank goodness they had my dear Cholula at the table.  I do appreciate that they have corn tortillas for your tacos, which make them slightly more authentic.

Service, when I went, was very odd.  It wasn't clear what you were supposed to do.  So we lined up with everyone else.  You can't get your drinks paid for at the same time as your food, so if you want a beer you have to go to the bar before or after you pay for your meal.  Some reviewers mentioned servers... I saw none, maybe one... but it wasn't clear if that person worked there.  Nobody came by the tables, no water was offered, and extra cutlery was non-existent.

Next time I will try a burrito the size of my head.

I came back from San Diego where I gorged myself on deep fried fish tacos.  I thought I could leave my lust for them in California, but it followed me to Vancouver.  For weeks all I could think about was fish tacos.  When cars drove by me they morphed into roaming fish tacos with wheels.  Birds became flying tacos with soft shelled flapping wings.  It was clear I needed to get my fix, and after several attempts I was having trouble getting it in Vancouver.

Like some form of black Taco magic, Chronic Tacos opened and they served SoCal style fish tacos.  I think I ate 57, maybe it was only 54.  I think there may be other things on the menu, but why would I care?  Fish Tacos Baja style is where it's at.

One thing stops me from giving the home of the fish taco a 5 star review, and that's the restaurant confuses me.  You give me a tray with my food, and yet you come to me and clear my plates.  If my food is not ready you sometimes bring it out to me.  Are you fast food or a proper restaurant?  Long ago I devised a plan, a lifestyle if you will, that if my food involved self transport by tray, no tip was needed.  Forget the news of horoscopes shifting, this tray thing has shattered my entire reality.  What is the proper etiquette here?  Who am I?  Really, someone tell me.

The moral of the story is:

    1. Good fish tacos
    2. Anyone know where else I can get good fish tacos in Vancouver?
    3. What is the tipping etiquette when you delivery your meal on a tray, but they bus your table?

This is my fave local hangout/taco place. I usually don't eat Mexican food in Canada. Usually go across the border for "decent" mexican food.
After dating a Mexican from LA I would say this joint is the closest taco/burrito place that's actually good next to going to a hole in the wall in LA!

The grilled fish burrito (baha style) is fantastic.

The line-up however, is consistently brutal.

They have a few parking spaces out the back but customers are not allowed to park there. They would get higher grades if they allowed that - at least for take-out customers.

I loooove tacos and burritos and now I loooove Chronic Tacos!

I tried a chicken taco and a potato taco. The potato taco was interesting, mashed potatoes in a deep fried corn tortilla...I won't order it again but for $2 I didn't feel so bad that I didn't like it. My chicken taco was amazing, pretty big for $3 and the meat and sauces were nice and flavorful and tasted fresh.

The staff were clearly coming down from their reefer when I was ordering (1 employee was leaning on a another employee just to keep himself in the upright position while they both stood there with their mouths open.) I found ordering to be an amusing little experience, dinner and a show!

I will be back for many more tacos!

If I was rating this as a Sports Bar, it would probably be higher. But as a restaurant, this is a bit of a dive.

I was under no illusions that California Mexican would be the best food, but this place is convenient and I was looking to fill the hunger gap. Having visited twice, I can say that the food is at best bland. They overstuff everything, which would be great if I was a starving student. But it also makes it impossible for them to assemble the food.

The al pastor filling is a definite miss. The beef is okay, but the chicken is probably the best. If you're hungry, you could do worse. But in Vancouver you can do so much better.

I really love the concept of a counter service taco cafe inside a chill, young sports bar.

As for the food, tacos are just one of the dishes, but they're certainly a good one. These tacos are a bit bigger than La Taqueria and a bit lighter than Don Guacamole's. They're big on toppings and nicely flavoured.

My favourite flavour is Carnitas -- aka pulled pork.

I also tried the baja style shrimp but I didn't enjoy it because I found the deep fried batter was too heavy. I guess I've just grown too used to nice, light, tempura batter.

5 stars for a quick meal/fast food-ish type of setting.

Food: try the beer battered shrimp tacos, baja style. So good! But definitely not a light lunch.

Great for watching games and hanging out with friends (large groups).

Tons of drink specials daily (except Fridays).

Mexican fast food place. You get to see them make your food right there and you can take it to the booths to eat it. Portions are huge. They also have a bar with cheap drink specials.

The veggie tostada bowl is awesome.  So are the veggie fajitas. I can't say anything about the meat though.

The guys making the food are really friendly, but the girls who are the cashiers are usually pretty stupid. Just be really clear to them what you ordered and make sure you're looking at the little screen so you know what you're being charged for.

Bottom line: Definitely worth checking out! They've also got locations in Kits and downtown.
