Ottawa, ON
It's hard to really appreciate the downtown core lit up with Christmas lights until we've had our first snowfall.
Regardless the Christmas lights that are strung from posts to trees and across a few buildings and projected on Parliament Hill are a really nice touch to the holiday season in the capital.
Several different colours are used and although I sometimes find Christmas lights to be a bit a tacky, I must say the way these are displayed is quite nice.
The projection on Parliament's Centre Block this year is giant snowflakes that look really cool, especially on evenings when it is snowing. There are lights on the treets all over the main lawn at Parliament as well as the War Memorial, Supreme Court, NAC, City Hall and various parks downtown.
After dinner in the market or a show at the NAC in December, a nice snowy walk around downtown is made that much more charming with this seasonal festival. -

I LOVE Ottawa in the winter. It's beauuuutiful!
The entire downtown area is lit up! They even have an illumination ceremony during the first week of December every year on Parliament Hill to begin the holiday season.
They say that there are over 300, 000 lights all over the city. Some are very simple, while others are much more extravagant. They dress trees, outline sculptures, and are made into designs on the lawns and atop buildings.
Taking a walk around will really show you the beauty and charm of the Nation's Capital. -

Every year around this time, downtown Ottawa is possibly at its prettiest. From December 4th to January 7th, the NCC illuminates approximately 60 sites in the National Capital Region with 300, 000 Christmas lights. Each site's colour scheme is usually intentional and unique to the area's significance. It's very much worth it to take a walk along Major's Hill to look at the lights from Gatineau, Parliament, the Art Gallery's huge Christmas tree, the park itself and all the other areas that surround it. It's a simple and free pleasure that's quite possibly the best out of all the Canadian cities that participate in Christmas Lights Across Canada at the same time.
The official illumination ceremony is on December 4th this year at 6pm on Parliament Hill with Beaver Tails, hot chocolate and carol singers.
