I can't believe how long it took me to visit the Choco Cafe, considering its proximity to my apartment. Maybe that's a good thing though, since the chocolate is delicious and I want to return every day for the rest of my life. Must. Show. Restraint.

There are lots of different kinds of chocolates, and generous samples are available to help you make your selections. Plus there's coffee and other tasty baked goods. I hear the hot chocolate is out of this world, so I'm *almost* wishing for a cold day just so I have an excuse to try it.

I adore this place. The coffee is delicious and always fresh. They once explained that they never put on huge carafes of coffee because they want to make a better cup of coffee for you. When someone explains this to you, it makes it ok that you sometimes have to wait while they brew a fresh batch of coffee. (And for coffee lovers in the know - they use Java Blend beans).

In addition to delicious coffee, they have super tasty chocolate and you'll never leave without a sample. The baked goods are also tasty and they'll even offer to warm your cookie for you (not a euphemism. Pro-tip: get the heated chocolate chip cookie).

And if that wasn't enough, the staff are delightful and they offer a 15% discount to students/folks working nearby.

So if you haven't been already, you really need to change that.

Okay. Tonight I had this grand plan that I was going to write this review as I sat munching on the Choco Café's delicious chocolates, so that I could describe to you exactly how good they are.
Problem is... every time I get home, the entire bag (no matter how much I buy) is always empty... Mystery for the ages.

From memory, I can tell you that this is just about the best chocolate that I have experienced anywhere. Every variety is inherently delicious. From creamy chocolate nougat with honey to the addictive milk chocolate with hazelnuts. Every type is a winner. Each chocolate is at the affordable price of around 5$ for 100g worth.

You may have some trepidation when you first meet the wall o' chocolate, but the thing is, samples are almost thrown at you to nibble one (something that very very very very few stores of any species do).

I have not yet tried the hot chocolate varieties, but that just gives me an excuse to go back!

Even if you do not like chocolate (and I won't judge you if you don't....too hard), there are a multitude of other drinks to try out.

When you are down in the Water Street area, make sure you stop in!

Another happy side effect of my travels on Open City and the shop keeper met us with a dish of complimentary chocolate. Winner! I had the small hot chocolate made with dark chocolate and it was delish, rich and not too sweet. The interior is larger and lusher than you'd think certainly enough room to curl up with a hot drink or lunch. The selection of chocolate for purchase seemed complicated but the clerk was glad to chat and provide samples to customers.

I walk on Lower Water Street on a regular basis, yet somehow had never stopped in to take a look around the Choco Cafe until last night. Well... I'm glad that oversight has been resolved, because Choco Cafe is a wonderful little spot. True to its name, the store is half candy/chocolate shop (which is a-ok with me) and half coffee shop. Upon entry we were immediately greeted and offered several samples of their tasty wares. White chocolate-covered mango? Milk chocolate wafer? Chocolate-covered cheesecake bite? Um... yes to all of the above. They have a great selection of pre-packaged items which I think would make great Mother's Day and Grad Gifts, and the service is certainly top-notch as every employee in the store said hello to us and asked if there was anything they could do to help. I'm very happy I finally went in.

What a great place to work and people-watch while munching on chocolate and croissants, surrounded by picturesque shelves of dainty treats!  I am impressed by the excellent quality of the coffee, as well as the really nice sized mug it's offered in and the fact that it is really actually steaming hot and stays that way for a while - - I don't find this happens often in this town.  I was offered a beautifully wrapped piece of delicious chocolate too, and the hand waved easily over the bowl brimming with more of them as if to say 'help yourself'.  Some innovative gift ideas here with his/hers mugs full of treats and jars of multicoloured pastel bites and baby shower packages.  Pleasant, informative staff - lots of windows and sunlight - a view of the water -  what more could I ask?

Chocolate + coffee shop = heaven. Seriously. This place has two of my favorite things all wrapped up in a cute atmosphere that is warm, welcoming and super cute. (Did I say it was cute yet? It's very cute.) I've been there twice in two days - possibly due to the enticement of free chocolate samples at the door, but it's really about the incredible service you receive.

Delicious samples aside, the staff are extremely attentive and the gift offerings look simply charming. If you like hot chocolate, this is hands down the best hot cocoa in the city.

    "Blame it on the cho-cho-cho-cho-cho-choc-o-late."

Okay, it's not as catchy, but I swear I might as well have been drunk during my first visit to Choco Café across from Bishop's Landing. From bright-eyed first reactions like "It looks like the Bombay Company but everything's made of chocolate," to sugar-fueled revelations that have since been forgotten in a sweet, delicious haze, this is not a place I will be able to go unaccompanied.

This new café slash hand-wrapped chocolate shop is currently open for business from dawn (actually, a little before...) to well beyond dusk (midnight - I'm serious), to fill just about any need whether it's espresso drinks, drinking chocolates, baked goods, Lebanese specialties like thyme wraps, gift packages...I mean, the list just keeps on going.

To start, the owner offered us each a sample of their chocolate. Except it wasn't a sample...it was a full, hand-wrapped piece of dark chocolate with whole almonds. Then he started feeding us more samples. And more. And then even a few more. Each one is delicious and that's coming from a non-chocolate lover. The imported Belgian chocolates are made differently than most, reducing the sugar content and allowing the sweetness to come from the chocolate itself. No more scratchy back of the throat! Also, they're cold-pressed instead of melted into shape which makes for a better product, as I learned.

While gift arrangements can be put together for every occasion (they're gorgeous but pricy), you can also get the chocolates for $5/100g. Now, that might not mean much to you...but it's essentially your pick of six to eight specialty chocolate creations (you can mix and match) for five freaking dollars. I went with more of the dark chocolate and almond, a couple of the milk chocolate and coconut, and my favourite, a milk chocolate around nuts that have been caramelized with brown sugar. RIDIC, you guys!

For those of you who can't stand Canadian chocolate after experiencing the wonders of the European approach, it's time to get your fix.

There was a great article in today's paper about Choco Cafe, and it took me no time to get down there and try this new spot for myself. It was fantastic, the decor is warm and welcoming. And their products are amazing. They have a great selection of specialty chocolates, which they let me try. Each chocolate is wrapped and decorated, which makes them perfect for gifts and special occasions (would be a perfect hostess/host gift).
I then tried one of their hot chocolates that is made from melted chocolate, topped with fresh whipped cream. They have a great little cafe, that offer coffees, teas and bakes goods, which looked great. I will have to go back another day so I can sample so more of what they have to offer.

"Wow, wow, slow down! No more samples." Yes, it was I who uttered these words, as the most generous purveyor of individually wrapped Belgium chocolates continued to lead us through a sampling that Willy Wonka would be green with envy over.

I couldn't help but think that this lovely man with a wall full of chocolate drawers could dole out samples in a wiser way, perhaps cutting them up instead of offering whole pieces. Just a suggestion though, it was pretty impressive to be treated to all of these delights. Oh, and at $5 for 100 grams-- steal! I would love to see more dark chocolate on the offer. For now, dark chocolate covered almonds, hazelnuts and "nut crunch" bars will do. (Sighs, eats a grape, fans herself)

The custom designed sets are a hoot: chocolate cigars, baby boy and girl arrangements, autumn colour palettes, including peach flowers (oh how my mom would love this!), teddy bears.. oh and a magical rhinestones Hello kitty's. Wow! You can have custom creations made for any occasion.

The cafe side is an intriguing mix of coffee creations, hot chocolates and light meals. It still looks a bit sparse, but they've just opened, and I have a feeling it will get busier as word gets out about all of these sweet treats.

The only negative I could find here, and it doesn't even count, is the lack of background music to break the deafening silence....but that is in the works! The staff are not only friendly but really know their product as well, and that goes A LONG WAY with me. They offer you free samples of their chocolate, which is made with Belgium chocolate and is divine. They have a comfy seating area, where you can choose a table and chairs, bistro style, or a comfy fabric chair where you can gather with friends. They offer light fare so lunch can happen as they have brought in some yummy items from the Golden Bakery in Bedford, and you can't go wrong there. The Hot Chocolate is THE REAL DEAL as they steam up the hot milk and add chunks of Belgium Chocolate and pour it into a big mug....AMAZEBALLS!  This place is a must try!
