Now that I've tried to really stop eating eel, this has opened up even more delicious rolls to me at Chin's! My loves:
- Tootsie Roll
- Daniel Roll
- Red Roll
- C&J Roll
- Sumo Roll
- Heather Roll
- Godzilla
This place really knows how to slather on the avocado. Like melt-in-your-mouth butter.

San Francisco, CA
First time I came, not so good service. We stood awkwardly in the front while no one greeted us and waited for what seemed like a lifetime. I was bear hungry so I flagged down one of the female servers with a desperate "can I just sit on the ground?" look. I remember making a mental note that I would not return. But during a sushi craving, I already forgot the name and proceeded to buy a second Groupon. It was only when I started recognizing the liquor store next door that I realized my mistake.
But then again, it was actually pretty good the second time around. We were seated at the bar promptly (maybe we lucked out on a slow night?) and ordered sake bombs, garlic udon noodle (NOM!), Hamachi carpaccio, sashimi salad, and Daniel roll. All were delicious and very much worth it with the Groupon. I'm not so sure I would come back if I did not have a Groupon though. -
Review from Nicole S.
My friend purchased the Groupon deal after we saw Chin's 4 star rating on Yelp. Although their menus have a good selection and portion size for the rolls, their food rated average.
SUSHI:
*Spider Roll Maki($10.50) - Good. I tend to favor rolls where the rice is inside the roll. The roll contained deep fried softshell crab, tobiko, cucumber, and avocado with sweet unagi sauce drizzled over each piece.
*Shrimp Tempura Maki ($7) - Good. it was a basic roll cut into eight large pieces containing avocado and shrimp tempura with the rice on the outside rolled over tobiko.
OTHER FOOD:
*Dungeness Crab Garlic Noodles ($16) - Disappointing and bland. This was the main dish that sold me on coming to the restaurant. Thick noodles had pieces of crab, slices of shitake mushrooms, and sliced mustard greens tossed together and sesame seeds sprinkled on top...but where was the garlic?!
*Crab & Shrimp Gyoza w/Veggie Salad ($9, 3 pieces) - Ok. Although the gyozas were decent size, you could only taste the shrimp filling. Make sure you use the vinegar/soy sauce for extra flavoring. It was a bit odd that salad was served with the gyoza though...
On the plus side, a large nigori sake was $7/bottle.
SERVICE:
The older lady who took our order seemed a bit short and not very friendly. The younger waitress was the complete opposite.
PARKING:
Difficult. Do check the bus stops signs as some allow you to park there after 8pm. -

I went for a groupon deal. The food is OK, for a groupon price. But the regular price is pretty expensive for the quality of the place in my opinion.

Went here on a Groupon coupon.
I passed this restaurant all the time but never knew it was Chin's--only discrete artistic Japanese characters outside identifies the place.
The restaurant deserves at least a strong 4-stars.
Great atmosphere, good service, soothing music. Food costs a little more than most Japanese sushi restaurants but it's worth it. Their entree offerings are interesting. We had a delicious dungenes crab udon which was so generous, we easily split it for 2. Also, a really delicious chicken soup made of a clear broth with perfectly cooked slices of chicken breast, asparagus, carrots, shitake mushrooms, and onions. The hamachi was wonderful & fresh.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and plan to go back. -

Clean and comfortable dining environment + and responsive staff+ good quality food, what else to ask for when dine out? I will go back after my first attempt with groupon.
We ordered the usual- recommended by fellow yelpers:
- asparagus inari avocado roll
- simon roll
- crab garlic noodles.
all of them were yummy, my favorite is the garlic noodles, really, lots of crab meat and it is not greasy-- my tummy liked it and digested it well afterward, so it is a good sign. -

I came here with a Groupon last Tuesday. The serving staff was very nice, and so was the decor of this 1-1/2 level restaurant. The chirashi was good, $17 for a order that was said to be nine pieces (I counted more but maybe one of the pieces got cut up smaller). Worthy to keep in mind to come here again.
I read certain reviewers complaining about parking. While it may be tough, the best idea is that, if you're coming 8pm or later, look for parking around Clement and 8th, especially since the bus stops open up for parking. -
Review from Jonathan L.
San Francisco, CA
Came here with my family with a groupon. Ordered a a roll (forgot the name but it had something fried in it), garlic noodles and teriyaki chicken. I expected the food here to be japanese but it is actually Chinese/Japanese fusion. I honestly don't think this is a good combination. Two different conflicting flavors.
The roll was ok. It wasn't good enough for me to remember the name or what was in it.
The garlic crab noodles were pretty good. This was the only good dish of the three. It came in a pretty large bowl and his huge chunks of crab. They were extremely generous with the crab meat.
The teriyaki chicken isn't Japanese style at all. It is more like thick slices of frozen chicken breast with some sauce on it. It wasn't marinated at all. It was under flavored and bland.
Overall, the service is really great but the food is mediocre. The design and ambiance of the restaurant is really nice and the prices reflect it. The food quality (besides the crab noodles) reflects a lower end restaurant like Kikis but the prices are double and sizes are smaller. The restaurant definitely has potential but I think improvements to a few menu items and adding a thicker, more flavorful sauce to the chicken can make this place better. -

San Francisco, CA
This place is a pretty solid Japanese restaurant. The restaurant itself has a very homely atmosphere. The back seating area is carpeted, which one does not typically expect. The service was very good.
I ordered the grilled chicken teriakyi with seasonal vegetables. The gf got some type of roll with what seemed like a "fiesta" on top. We also shared panko crusted scallops with salmon. The chicken dish had a very delicious sauce, and the vegetables tasted excellent. The scallops tasted a bit too gamy, but it was alright. I kind of tasted like fish sticks. Haha.
Server gave us crabcakes instead of the scallops so we had to wait a awhile to get our order corrected.
All in all, I would recommend people to try this place. -

We came here with a groupon last week. The food was actually quite delicious, and we really enjoyed almost every roll (except the salmon skin roll - NASTY. tasted like it was full of grains of sand...but I won't hold that against Chin's, since I've heard that's just a bad idea roll to order anywhere.) The waiter was nice, too, and checked up on us an appropriate amount of times. The reason for the knocked off star is completely for the value factor. This place is OVERPRICED. I would pay half the price at my usual sushi joint and still have high quality food. Wouldn't come here without another groupon, unfortunately. Their specialty rolls (we had the Godzilla, the Heather and one other I think that has been mentioned on Yelp a zillion times) were fantastic!

After reviewing the Yelp reviews and seeing the "4-stars" - I was really shocked at the poor level of service - my God, the servers were completely in a different time zone!
The Bad:
Service (you saw this coming right?) there was never any consistency to either the person "serving" us (it was like by committee) or the frequency of coming around - they just forgot about our table and our requests. My entree came with rice....and the rice showed up after we finished our meal (I asked two different servers about it but it came waaay too late). Not good. We couldn't pay for a bill because no server would come to take our money - we could of just walked out and nobody would have noticed. Sushi was just slightly above what you would find pre-packaged at trader joes or whole foods. Some of the dishes are very pricey but....
The Good:
Had the terriyaki chick entree - very large portions of meat. Also had the Garlic noodles - very large portion was well. That's about it. The ambiance is just bland.
The verdict: Unforgettable (in a really bad way) service, in an unauthentic "Chinese-style" sushi bar with large entree portions, and sushi you will find "blase." -
Review from Alyssa G.
Chin's was on my list for about 6 months, because it was recommended by someone at work, as being one of the "best sushi bars in Inner Richmond." To be honest, I ate here about 3 weeks ago, and already forgot what I ate. Not because it wasn't good, more like it was forgettable.
Prices are a little higher for the quality. Decor is a bit random, and so is the music. Service is great, but a little too fast, our dishes were all sent around the same time, so I felt a little rushed.
One thing I would recommend because it's different from other sushi bars:
Dungeness Crab Garlic Noodles - $16 - Big chunks of crab over garlic noodles and stir-fried veggies. This dish easily feeds 2.Listed in: SF Ethnic Restaurants, Sushi-dom

Best sushi EVAHHHHH...
We love this place. Nothing too fancy or too pretentious, but it really is good sushi.
I think Chin's is a good place to keep in mind if you have a sushi novice around who's not into raw fish. They have a lot of sushi rolls with cooked fish inside that are really delicious. Personally, I judge a sushi place for the creativity in their rolls. Anyone can cut sashimi!
My short list:
1. Simon Roll (I think this is kind of their signature roll, and very rich and delicious)
2. Joey Roll
3. Sashimi salad
4. Lizzy Roll
5. Catipillar
A great sushi spot in the Inner Richmond!! -

San Francisco, CA
The food here is great, and the fish is relatively fresh. I used to order from here once a week when working late, and they were always courteous and delivered on time. So why the 2 stars?
First, I would probably never order from here if it had to come from my own pocket. My late nights at work allowed me to use the expense account, but the prices are fairly high for what you get.
Second, the last and final time I ordered from here was a nightmare. I called in around 8pm and put in my order for Naruto Roll, Tootsie Roll, and California Street Roll (all absolutely delicious and flavorful). The girl on the phone, who had a relatively hard time understanding my English, told me it would take ~an hour to deliver, and because I'm usually very satisfied with the sushi, I decided to wait. An hour and 15 minutes later, the food arrives, and I literally tear the plastic bag apart because I'm a) starving, and b) annoyed that I'm still working at 9:30pm.
Imagine my disappointment when I realize the rolls are completely different from what I ordered. My Naruto Roll turned into the Sumo Roll (I despise garlic), Tootsie into the Lily/Lizzy Roll, and California Street into something that sounded nothing like it. Called in and the manager was very apologetic. To compensate me for my inconvenience, he said he could re-run the order. I'd have to wait another half hour to an hour, so I declined. He then offered $15 credit on my $25 order that was entirely wrong. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice gesture, but I expected something a bit more--a partial refund might've been more appropriate.
Thirdly, that last and final time I ordered? My boyfriend and I got sick from the fish. Talk about icing on top of the cake. -

Ordered on Eat 24 Hours tonight at 7:12PM. After an hour we called to check the status of our order. We were told it had already left and will be there in a few minutes. 15 minutes later we call again and the women calls the driver. 5 minutes she says. Another 15 minutes goes by the driver calls us to tell us he doesn't know how to get to our address??? How does this happen? We give him our cross streets and he FINALLY arrives 10 or so minutes after that. That makes for a grand total of an hour and forty minutes!
The driver was very apologetic and at that point we thought to ourselves.. ok well we will let it go.. lets just enjoy the food.
Open our food up.. and it looked like someone shook the hell out of it.. everything was a mess.. rolls were almost unrecognizable...
We couldn't eat much of it.. so unappetizing.
I called to speak with a manager. The women told me there wasn't a manager around and trailed off on some tangent of excuses.. So I tell her we are very unhappy with the service and quality of food. She then says to hold on. I can hear her telling someone else about our complaint. He says in the background "well what do they want?".. I said I would like a refund. She says she can give us a discount on our next order. I tell her we will not be ordering from them again.
She then tells the guy my complaints. He says in the background .. "Well do they want to send the food back?".. UM I CAN HEAR YOU! She offers to refund us half of the bill. I say ok that is fine. When will this happen?
Hangs up on me. -

SPECIALTY MAKI
Rolls are the winners here. We got a bunch to share.
DANIEL ROLL
So fatty with the avocado spread and they don't hold back. Hamachi, shrimp, avocado... yumminess
SIMON ROLL
This is actually my favorite. Tuna deep fried tempura with spicy crab. Simple and flavorful.
LILY ROLL
Seared tuna shrimp tempura with spicy lemon sauce. Pretty yummy roll as well.
POKI SALAD
We asked them to do a salmon poki salad but it was very below par. The salad was not mixed well and the ingredients were so bland. Just get salmon sashimi. The dressing was almost non-existent and i didn't enjoy this very much.
HOT TEA
Kept coming, which is always good.
Nothing about this place stood out. The rolls were all good, service was fine, but I will not likely come back unless I'm close by and really craving for some good rolls.Listed in: SAN FRANCISCO, JAPANESE

OMG SOOO GOOD!
I have blown so much money ordering from this place. I would take a star away since the prices are a little high, but they are so worth the price.
What to eat:
-Simon roll, try it...seriously, right now...you need it
-Godzilla roll - also tasty
- Sushi dumplings - normally I don't like things that are too fishy but this was actually really good...try it!
I will continue to order. They are pretty much always early when I order delivery and the delivery kid is kind. -

super busy, so service was slow. i suspect it's because of the recent groupon.

Pretty pricey spot for a sushi, but my favorite was the Spinach Leek Cannelloni (you get the bang for your buck on this dish). I really liked their crab cake dish and stuffed shrimp dish also. Anything other tapa plates you order is too pricey and the portions are way too small.
I'd only go to a place like this once in a longgggggggggggg while. -

Been on a delivery kick and decided to try Chin's. Ordered online and got a call a little later saying they didn't have any uni. No problem. I understand that people run out of things. They asked if we wanted anything else instead and we said a couple sides of rice would be great. Delivery came less than an hour later, but instead of swapping out the uni charge for the 2 sides of rice, they ended up giving us an edamame and a miso soup to make up the difference. I didn't really like this, but whatever. It wasn't that much money so we didn't make a fuss. The thing that bothered me was that we didn't pay by credit card, we paid cash. So it should have been easy to amend the amount. Now on to the food...
Edamame: Overcooked so incredibly mushy. I don't mind if it's a little overcooked, but we ended up tossing this cuz it was so mushy.
Seaweed Salad: I looked at their menu online and it said this was $4. On the online delivery site it was $5. A little small for the price, but I liked the salad.
Miso Soup: I love soup and this was so disappointing. Very bland. I also wish this had some seaweed or green onions in this cuz with just the tofu and broth it needed a textural element.
Dungeness Crab Garlic Noodles: I actually liked this. It could have used a little more Garlic flavor, but the portion was huge and we got a good amount of crab. Also comes with broccoli, onions and mushrooms. Yum!
Amaebi: This was good! The heads were fried nicely and I enjoyed every bite!
We also order the Hamachi Kama and Daniel roll, but I didn't really eat those so I don't have any comments. The Hamachi Kama came with a good portion of mushroom garlic rice and the Daniel roll was 8 pieces. All in all I enjoyed everything I ordered. I would have given this place 4 stars, except for the two things they gave us to make up the difference in uni price were awful. Also, we asked for extra wasabi and ginger and all we got was what came with the sushi. Not sure if that one leaf of wasabi they made was larger than your normal portion, but I wanted more. -

We've been searching for a new sushi delivery spot in our neighborhood, and we tried Chin's last night. I appreciated the fact that, when I ordered through Grubhub and got an estimated delivery time of 95 minutes and protested, they promised delivery in under an hour instead and delivered within that timeframe. My husband really liked the salmon skin and spicy tuna roll, and I liked the shrimp tempura roll and shitake mushroom and spinach roll.

Yum Yum! Probably my favorite sushi place in San Francisco. You'd think there'd be amazing sushi in the city, but there really isn't. It is really nice though.

Sushi chef at the sushi bar used his cell phone while preparing food. No hand-washing after.
I'd forgiven Chin's for the higher prices and small portions in return for their quiet(er) ambiance, but this was just plain gross.
They might has well have served us everything on a toilet seat. -
Review from Mike L.
If you were to ask me a year ago what I thought of Chin's, I would have told you it was an awesome Japanese/sushi restaurant that was a sort of hidden gem in the Richmond district. Today? It's still a solid neighborhood spot...just that it doesn't seem to be quite as good as it used to be. Sad.
Now don't get me wrong - the food is still pretty solid, and they still have their menu going for them. The fact that they offer a more unique array of items has always been my favorite thing about Chin's. While most Japanese places will offer the standard types of sashimi and rolls (Rock N Roll, Rainbow, Dragon, etc.) along with bento box combos/specials, they offer a bit more. Beyond the usual sashimi/rolls, they also have over 20 or so house specialty rolls, along with a bunch of large and small plates and entrees.
Both the entrees and the rolls are good for the most part, with some a notch both above and below average. The Lizzy Roll (fresh salmon, avocado, and lemon), Daniel Roll (hamachi, shrimp, avocado, and spicy seared tuna, and crab), and Simon Roll (tuna deep fried tempura style with spicy crab) come to mind among the ones that are pretty good, although the Daniel roll wasn't that great the last time I had it. Similarly, I've noticed that the handrolls can be a little hit-and-miss as well.
In comparison, their hot foods and small plates are a little better and more consistent in comparison. The Hamachi Salmon Tartar has become a new favorite, while the crab cakes and Grilled Hamachi Kama are mostly steady. My favorite dish of everything though, oddly enough, is their Sashimi Salad. Real simple and not particularly unique, yet they do it better than any where else that I've had it so far.
Beyond the food, I like how the ambiance is pretty mellow and that the restaurant never gets packed and noisy. It does kinda suck that the prices trend a little on the high side, but I appreciate that they serve up a little more than the usual staples. It's sad to think that they may potentially be regressing a little, but they are still good nonetheless. For a time, this was actually one of my go-to date spots...let's hope I don't have to find a replacement. Or maybe let's hope I do? -

GROSS!!!!! The roll I ordered was gross, the nigiri was gross, and even the wasbe was foul if that is even possible! The sushi was so mushy and not fresh! I actually spit out the roll I had and threw it away. What a total waste of money! Don't bother!

this place has gotten worse.
cabbage salad
- found a piece of hair in there
scallop and crab cake
- one wasn't as uniformly shaped as the other
- still a nice golden brown
- drained well
- didn't have the same crab sweetness as last time
dragon roll
- former times i wasn't able to tell if the crab was real or imitation, but this time it was clearly imitation
- presentation of the dragon wasn't as detailed as previously
- shrimp shrunk in size a bit
dungeness crab garlic noodles ($16)
- obvious crab was not fresh. from a jar perhaps? didn't have crab sweetness either
- mushy
- noodles had a bite to it. another diner thought it was undercooked
- didn't care for the florets of broccoli in there
teriyaki chicken ($11)
- DON'T GET THIS!!!!!!!!!!
- every single teriyaki chicken i've had had the signature teriyaki sauce on dark meat. this one was salt and peppered breasts with little to no sauce.
- it did have more chicken overall then others
- rice came in a separate bowl
tea
- used to have the roasted rice flavor, but now it just taste like lipton tea bags
service
- food tends to come out slow
- appetizer came out last (for those who care)
the reasons that i return to this place keeps disappearing one by one.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Chin is by far the best sushi place in the city, and I've lived here for over a decade. For selection and quality of speciality rolls, this place is a hands down winner. We try to branch out a little every time we go, but my absolute favorites are
--Lizzy
--Red
--Sembei
--Tootsie
--Simon
The rolls all have a great amount of fish, but they're not too big to eat in a single bite (ginormous rolls are a pet peeve of mine). The ambiance is modern, usually quiet, and service is great. Definite hidden gem, I'd recommend it to visitors, sushi novices and locals alike. -

Sigh. I was excited to try this place after seeing it had four stars. I ordered in and underwhelming doesn't quite cover it. I ordered super simple rolls - they were falling apart, too much rice, really mushy (kinda smelly too) fish inside. Blech. I had two bites and in the trash it went.
Sushi is a pretty food. And chefs who take pride in their work wouldn't serve this. The nigiri was just really thrown together looking, and was NOT fresh tasting at all. Anyways, needless to say I ate the seaweed salad and called it a night.
Also, miso soup should have a little salt in it, otherwise its super bland.

Wow - there are some Great Sushi places in the City, and there are ONE's like Chin that are BAD!! Do NOT order from here EVER!
worst Service Ever!! Driver was 25 mins late for delivery thru GruHub, and was going to take 20 mins more! ( didn't even call to let us know they were running late )
Ask for adjustments ( it was already 9pm, and we were starving ) - and when I called to find out, they said won't give discount, and to cancel order, and hung up the phone on us. Definitely passing the word to not order with friends and family. Shame on them. -
Review from Tina A.
*Reasonably priced well-executed sushi*
- here are a few of the rolls we tried
Dragon Roll:
- tempura shrimp - fresh and flavorful, and still crispy! [unlike most other sushi places that have soggy tempura batter inside your dragon roll by the time they deliver it to you]
- unagi - fat slices and not overly sauced
- avocado - fat slices to match the amount of eel
- impression: the best roll of the night - all the flavors and textures were perfect, it also comes with a mini seaweed salad!
Double Star Roll:
- unagi - snuggled somewhere inside the roll - not too generous of a helping
- maguro + hamachi - fresh raw 1 inch cubes of fish
- snow crab topping - sweet and a hint of savory
- impression: a good tasting roll, however it was a small and skiny roll. also it has an overall mushy soft texture because of lack of cucumbers or fried stuff
Joey Roll:
- miso marinated tuna + unagi : could not really taste
- avocado - wrapped all around the roll ...lots of avocado is always yummy
- impression: not much of a memorable roll because there was not really much flavor to this roll
Service:
- persistent staff
- missed a roll on our order, however portions were filling enough for our party
- tolerant staff - they did not kick us out even though we sat there long after we were done - however it was not the busiest of friday nights
Overall:
- the sushi rolls all had fresh ingredients and looked amazing, however that does not mean the flavor will amaze you. some rolls are good, and some are better, but none were bad.
- Curteous staff and a clean place to have a nice dinner with a small group of friends. -

Late review.
Sushi dumpling (salmon, balsamic, sesame)
Double star roll (snow crab, unagi)
Hamato be chi tamaki (hamachi, tobiko)
Can't say it was terribly memorable. There are better sushi options in the area. Food is kinda hit/miss. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, lots of time mediocre.
But it's still nice to change up the pace if you live in the area. Not really worth a drive to try out. -

1. Great quality tuna.
2. Menu items should be more descriptive with the contents of the roll; not all items have a listing of the contents.
3. I'd like to see a better selection of rolls with tuna on the menu.
4. Good service.
5. OK ambience; good privacy between tables.
Bottom Line: I'd go back if my other preferred sushi restaurant isn't open. -

What kind of restaurant that could overcharge people? I had to dig my receipt in the trash can because of you, Chin's sushi! I saw the charge on my credit card and I knew I was overcharged.
I went with my friends and we split the bill. She paid the full tip so I zeroed mine. Maybe they think I was stingy or something and they just somehow managed to add the tip. Either that or they typed wrong amount. Who cares? I had to dispute it.
No matter how good the food was this is no way to treat a customer. I'm very disappointed.
