This review comes after only 1 visit (take-away), but I plan on coming back!

NOTE TO SELF: They prefer credit card use only if your order is greater than $20 CAD.

So, this must be the lunch spot for the locals! By the looks of it, you wouldn't think to walk in here for lunch. It looks like a hole in the wall, and you may almost miss it since the driveway is quite small into the parking lot. (Thankfully, I went with a local Chinese-Canadian.)

Since this Chinese-Canadian brought me here, I figured it should be good. Once I walked into the restaurant, I was a little overwhelmed because the writing I saw on the whiteboard was all Chinese! I wondered how I would be able to read the menu, but they had a menu in English. Plus! There were tons of people in the restaurant ...

So, since I had no idea what would be delicious here, the local recommended their General Tso's Chicken. He said it was a hit! So, I went for the General Tso's Chicken Lunch Special (general tso's chicken, rice, and hot & sour soup) + spring roll (which I had to pay extra for).

General Tso's Chicken -- I agree. This was good. Different, but good. The breading was medium thickness (not too thin, not overly thick because there was definitely chicken and you could see it!). The sauce was a reddish sauce that (call me crazy!) had a hint of some sort of barbeque sauce -- or so it seemed! mixed in with whatever other sauce, of course. It was interesting, but good. If anyone else orders this, let me know what you think!

Hot & Sour Soup -- I was never a big fan of hot & sour soup. Unfortunately, I still was not. But it must be good because this local Chinese-Canadian enjoyed it. Right? Next time, I would prefer egg drop, if they have it.

Vegetable Spring Roll -- This was good. Fine. I'm not sure how good a vegetable spring roll can get, so I will just leave it be.

I've been studying the to-go menu to see what I want next. Can't wait to go back!

You would think that in a town with a huge Asian student population that the Chinese food would be more superior?

We checked out China Garden after a gradution ceremony at Waterloo.  It was an odd time - 3pm (too late for lunch, too early for dinner) but we were starving from the 3 hour long ceremony.

We ordered a 6-item set menu that included:

    - house soup
    - spicy tofu
    - deep fried tofu pot with sea food
    - beef and Chinese broccoli
    - sweet and sour pork
    - half a white chicken

And I believe the rice came with the set menu as they brought us out a family sized portion to share.  All in all, the food was decent but nothing outstanding.  And it did not come with dessert at the end, not even sliced oranges or fortune cookies for the White guys.  Humph.

Can't comment on pricing as someone else in the party took care of the bill.

Service was a bit slow, even though the restaurant was empty.  The owners kids were running around playing tag.  My parents use to own a restaurant and if we did that, they would have chopped our legs off with a meat cleaver or given us the beats with a feather duster.  I didn't really mind the kids but just saying'.

Me and my family go to this restaurant frequently. The food quality is great. We usually like to get their "shao-ban" (hot plate) dishes along with a veggie dish. The dishes come very quickly.

Service is pretty good and you get to know the manager pretty well. He speaks mandarin, cantonese, and english, with cantonese being his most fluent. They have TVs that are usually playing some Cantonese channel. If you desperately need wi-fi, there's a William's right next door.

They have many large and small tables, so it's suitable for both small and large groups. It usually doesn't get too crowded, so the noise level is low most of the time. Not the best interior decor, but the food and service make up for it.

Overall a great place to have Chinese cuisine.

This is my "go-to" lunch Chinese food restaurant.  The place isn't a fine dining restaurant, but is great for a quick meal.  Michael and David run the place and they are efficient even when it is busy.  There are 26 lunch specials and there is plenty of variety (I have tried most of them) for a reasonable price.  As a bonus, there is wireless internet next door at Williams and it works great in the restaurant.

A few underwhelming experiences of egg rolls that tasted like mushy wet newspaper, mucousy (not a word, but I'm going with it) soups, and disappointing dishes, have made me a little gun-shy of the Chinese restaurants in the K-W area.

    But China Garden was different.

It's not much to look at inside, but the food is delicious - and *consistently* delicious. No matter what you order off the menu, you won't be disappointed.

I'll confess that I'm not too adventurous when it comes to Chinese food, but I have tried everything that my (way more adventurous) partner orders and I love it all. China Garden is so good that I trust whatever they make will be tasty.

If you've been disappointed with other K-W area Chinese (-Canadian) take-out, give China Garden a try.
