Review from Joanna F.
Absolutely brilliant improv with multiple acts a night presenting a variety of sketches.
The performers take a basic idea, add on suggestions from the audience and then goes full out trying to enact an up to hour long improvised skit.
This is laugh until you die funny stuff, but is definitely for an older audience as the material can get quiet suggestive!
Bring your sense of humor and wear comfortable clothes, otherwise you might just burst out of them from laughing so hard!
Shows start at 11pm, run two hours, and cost $10. These shows are popular, so you should show up about 10:30 to guarantee seats!Listed in: Whyte Ave & Old Strath favs

So I got to spend my Saturday night at the Varscona Theatre for Chimprov this past weekend.
I was initially a little apprehensive agreeing to go since my first improve comedy experience at the Varscona theatre a few years ago was on an amateur night...think lots of awkward laughing and slow pity-clapping.
But I gotta say, not too shabs this time around! These guys are pretty good! And the comedic talent is top notch. This was a two act show (an hour per act & an intermission in between) and was of the typical improve template (ie: Who's Line Is It Anyway) where the audience provides ideas and suggestions that the actors run wildly with off the cuff. The first act was definitely an "opener" with a number of funny moments...but the 2nd one was a howler; a gut-busting, knee-slapping, oh-no-you-didn't type of laughs.
The only catch with the show is that it starts at 11pm which actually worked out quite well allowing the few of us to go for some drinks on Whyte before making our way to the Varscona theatre.
All in all a pretty fun night. I had a great time and it was good to be reminded that there are fun evenings to be had around town that doesn't involve a head-pounding hangover the next morning with random cravings for an egg mcmuffin.
If you're looking for an easy night out and some solid laughs - this is a great option.
In the vein of Russell Crowe in Gladiator, "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??"
The answer will be yes. -

I love going out to the theater and nothing beats improv!
Last night 15 of us went to check out chimprov, hoping to get a glimpse of Nathan Fillion but were sadly an evening too late.
We have gone to chimprov and theatersports on multiple occasions at Varscona theater. It's a great location, just off of Whyte and the theater is quite nice.
Tickets are only $12 (which is a steal!!!). There is a concession with licorice, chocolate bars, and alcohol! You can get a Steam Whistle for $6 and I got my wine for $4. Which would have been a great deal if my boyfriend hadn't spilled my entire cup of wine on my lap during the second act. =(
Anyways, the actors are always brilliant, quick witted, and very funny! It's great to be in the audience and be involved. They often ask for ideas from the audience to construct their scene.
However, last night the beginning started as a debate, trying to decide who was better: Lil' Wayne or Dr. Suess. This was really a funny sketch but it had no audience involvement, and was scripted. That was slightly disappointing.
Chimprov is a really fun night out, but I think I prefer Theatersports which is more fast-paced and brings more involvement from the audience. -

Chimprov goes on on Saturday nights at 11:00pm at the Varscona theatre and it is always a good time.
If you've ever been to an improv show, you'll know what to expect. The audience makes suggestions and the comedy troop acts on them - it's a simple, but hilarious, concept.
Chimprov introduces a few different comedy troops to do their thing and the whole show lasts about 2 hours. There is an intermission half way through though so don't worry about being cooped up for too long.
The small concession sells coffee, hot chocolate, beer, pop, and Twizzlers - all at very good prices.
Tickets are $10 and they are worth every penny!
