Review from John Paul T.
Montréal, QC
The food was delicious! I had the steak frites--fries were to die for (not over cooked, perfectly salted), and the mushrooms were tasty. The steak itself (with some sort of butter on top) was mouthwateringly delicious. My friend had the duck confit and it was perfectly cooked and succulent served in a Le Creuset casserole dish. I noticed several others had ordered the duck and it seems to be one of their specialities. I had a small house salad to start, with a delightful vinaigrette and chevre fromage. We shared a bottle of wine (a little pricey at $49 for a comme-ci comme-ca pinot grigo). Also, try the Mango Cosmo. We ordered one before we were seated for dinner and they're quite tasty. Not overly strong on the booze but enjoyable none the less.
The atmosphere is FABULOUS. There is nothing like exposed brick walls! and from the window seat you could see City Hall and Market Square. my only complaint was that at around 10 some of the other diners got ROWDY. and I mean ROWDY. like drunk yuppies with too much money to spend and too many glasses of red wine. they started chatting loudly to the table next to us and ruined the atmosphere for me and my boyfriend. we enjoyed the food but were in a hurry to leave after these goons got drunk. I guess you should expect this later in the evening and this is more a reflection of the people who were at the restaurant, and not the establishment itself.
The service was attentive, efficient and discreet. The perfect combination.
I will be back to enjoy this little gem.
oh and PS this place is not cheap. like $200 for two (without dessert). but worth it if you enjoy amazing French food. -

I'm truly sold, this place is the best dinner in Kingston. Tell your relatives, your friends, I've been hitting up places around town for a few years and the best meals come from here.
What can I say to convince you, a great atmosphere with the option of a beautiful patio in the back for brunch. Excellent selected wines and cheeses, with great service staff. Recently updated menu with an excellent duck and ribeye.
If you're in town, plan to make it here one night and Woodenheads another and you're set for experiencing the best dining in Kingston.Listed in: My Best Meals, Kingston Hang-Outs

If you love French food and some interesting (read Canadian) twists on French food look no further.
We had a wonderful mean at Le Chien Noir.
The one thing that hands down I recommend is the Duck Poutine. OMG -- I absolutely crave this now (and being from Toronto -- well -- need I say more - I can't run around the corner to get it).
The decor is nice too -- brick wall on one side - tin ceiling -- nice touches with the french posters and also a patio out front. It is close to many of the downtown hotels (read walkable).
I also had a fish of the day for my main meal (the poutine being an appetizer). It was wonderful lake pickerel and was done in a light manner so it actually complimented the fish instead of over-powered it.
So -- bottom line -- don't be afraid to try this place -- you won't be sorry! -

What a great place to have dinner with a spouse and I highly suggest that you make reservations. We went there on a Saturday and even the bar stools were reserved. We especially enjoyed our appetizers and the mussels. Great wine selection. Attentive service without being too much. Would go back again.

OK is how I would like to rate this place, and it's unfortunate, as the food was really good...but to me...food is only part of a restaurant review. The service, atmosphere and overall experience is what I would like to comment on.
I was in Kingston for the weekend, as I was visiting a former University gal pal. We decided to hit up the downtown social scene for some food and people watching. The first few places that were on her list were full...she underestimated the draw of a Saturday night in downtown Kingston I guess ; )
So, we ended up here. Looked nice enough and we got to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful evening weather. However, we were seated and then ignored. Finally our server came over and asked what we wanted to drink, we had not decided and then she said that she'd be back with water....No specials were mentioned, she didn't ask if we had any questions about the menu...nothing. We weren't ready...so she was GONE!
The bus-girl came back with our water and about 15mins later our server appeared. "Ready to order?" she asked..."uhhh...I guess so" So we ordered and THEN she mentioned some specials and talked about their "prix fixe menu"...which would have been fun 20 mins ago...
Whatever, we ordered, waited for our wine and got some bread. I saw other bread baskets go by with artisan buns and yummy things...we got a piece of french baguette...
I was a little taken aback by the prices. $30 for my pickerel? Maybe it's because I grew up in NorthWestern Ontario...but pickerel should NEVER be this expensive!
We had to wait forever for her to acknowledge that we were done and to bring us the bill and then told my friend to go inside...ooops no wait outside...nope go inside....to pay by debit...THEN THE DEBIT MACHINE WAS DEAD! She looked at us with a deadpan face and asked what we'd like to do..."uhhh...pay by debit?" So, my friend trudged up to the bank and cam back with cash...
The food is what saved this experience and I would like to give the chef's a 5 ***** rating and the server a 2** rating...which is why I settled on 3***.
My pickerel was yummy, melt in your mouth amazing!
