So, I'm not that huge of a fan of Chicken Scratch, but I came here towards the end of last semester to find a thank you card for one of my professors, and was totally blown away by the selection of greeting cards and customer service that I immediately became a fan. Subsequently I wondered why I hadn't bought anything from Chicken Scratch before. I mean, it is one of those stores that I always stopped in during those lazy afternoons when I walk up and down Whyte Avenue with friends. We'd always stop in and check out the kitschy things Chicken Scratch carries, like Einstein bobble heads, located in one of the corners of the store. Funny how I would always gravitate towards that corner, even though half the store is dedicated to greeting cards. Anyway, my quest to find a suitable thank you card for my professor was a success. In the end, I did purchase a card of my own choosing, but was grateful for the staff's helpful and appropriate suggestions. The card was also reasonably priced, unlike some of these glittery, artsy-fartsy cards out right now. Next time I need a card, I'll be sure to visit Chicken Scratch again!

Chicken Scratch, I think you have the cutest name of any store on Whyte. Plus, I'm slightly obsessed with greeting cards, so this store is definitely one I think is worth checking out for any crafty gal or Whyte Ave wanderer.
Nestled in near When Pigs Fly (also one of my favourite-named boutiques), Chicken Scratch houses a whole ton of great greeting cards. Not just any occasion, but any style, too. Birthday, sympathy, divorce party? Sure. Humorous, serious, whimsical? They've probably got it.
I enjoy that Chicken Scratch also offers a bunch of cards made by local artists, too, although I usually don't buy any. Local is great, but these ones aren't anything special. Plus, they tend to run pretty expensive for such average cards.
In addition to cards, there's lots of other neat gifty things here, so take a good look around the store! -

I like to come to Chicken Scratch for gag gifts and other unexpected items. Whenever I think of this store, I think "rubber chickens", and indeed, they always have rubber chickens dangling from their ceiling.
They've got a great gift card selection, the quirky ones you can't find at Hallmark. I also noticed on my last visit that they have edible undies and bras in stock -- you can eat your way to passion the next time you, uh ...well, you know! They look like your standard underwear, only they're made of candy (the ones you find on edible necklaces).
I always love their window displays too, which never fail to catch my eye. They usually have a few baby jumpers that say cute things like "i-pood" while the jumper looks like an ipod. How adorable is that? Chicken Scratch has a lot of vintage-looking aprons too, also with sassy phrases on them.
This is where I got my favorite David & Goliath wallet that I treasured all throughout high school and university ... it said "Boys are smelly." Now that I'm a little more mature (or at least, I think I am), I've upgraded my wallet, but I still come back for neat little things like edible undies ... I mean, vintage aprons!Listed in: Best Gift Shops

This is the coolest little store ever! I suppose you could classify it as a stationary/card shop since the aisles are full of really neat greeting cards. I like doing a lap checking out everything on the walls.
I was SO excited to finally have found poetry magnets!!! I picked up a luggage strap for my parents - something you put around your luggage to easily identify it - that says "Not Yours."
I seriously have to set a time limit for myself in this store otherwise I spend way too much money. It's such a kitschy store that is something new each time you look at it.
This is the ultimate place to look for a unique, cute gift for someone or even just for yourself. -

Chicken Scratch is a small store on Whyte Avenue that sells cards, journals, wrapping paper, goofy books and gifts. Most cards are made of recycled paper and illustrated by local artists. Because of that they cost a little more than your regular cards sold at Hallmark. The selection of cards is good, and you will find a card for any occasion; the selection of journals and address books in limited. What this store has an abundance of is humorous books the titles of which I am ashamed to write here. Let's just say that if your friends have wacky sense of humor, give them these books as gifts. This gesture will never be forgotten: ) Also, check out games and novelty items sold here. They would make inexpensive and fun gifts.
Despite the fact that Chicken Scratch is a rather cute store, Notables and Le Papier still remain my go-to places when I need cards or stationery. -

This is one of the best shops around, and definitely on all of Whyte, for greeting cards. They have a large selection and there's a card for every personality here, whether sentimental or funny, sappy or blank. Cards are not of the dollar-store variety here. I saw art cards for $10 each. But if you want a card to make a statement, Chicken Scratch has it. I love the name. It's so whimsical and fun. This shop has a sense of humour.
Unsurprisingly, they also sell gag-type gifts and items that are silly, sexy or cute. I liked the aprons that said "Will cook for shoes." They sell an edible candy bra, ironing board covers with naked men, plastic raw chickens (what do people do with these, anyway?!) and other fun stuff. That's what just jumped out at me. They have some decor and other gifty items and staff are friendly. Right now there's lots of Christmasy stuff in the shop, and the sales people were busy setting up displays. Take your time picking a card here. They are happy to have you and the vibe here is very unrushed. -

Chicken Scratch is a really neat store and a great place to get a gift. The cards here are really unique, many of them made by local artists. A lot of them are actually funny, unlike the more generic ones you'd get at Hallmark or Carlton Cards.
The gag gifts are fun to look at, and they are way better than the kind you would find at a store like San Francisco. I love the baby soothers with full sets of teeth--hilarious!
Chicken Scratch can be a bit expensive, especially the journals. They have some of the most beautiful journals I have ever seen; the nicest ones are priced at over $20. I plan to buy one someday. I'm not sure why, but it makes a difference, when I'm journaling in a really nice book; it's like it's more inspirational.
I also love that they have imported chocolate bars and candy here. I think these make good gifts too, especially as a little something extra. They carry my favourite British imported chocolate bar, Lion. Although I'm sure my friends would appreciated the chocolaty goodness of Lion, this is usually a gift to myself. -

One of the other reviews stated that this place is like a higher end San Fransisco. I think they are right.
They carry a lot of off-beat novelty items here and plenty of things that would make nice little gifts. They also have wacky books that are great for a laugh. They carry tons of greeting cards too. Pretty cool store to check out with tons of little things to find.
The gag gifts they have here are pretty good too. -

This is a fabulous stationary and card store. I love all the cards here. They are all original, some of them are handmade; none of them are generic. They also have beautiful wrapping paper, gift bags, journals, paper and also bizarre little gifts.
They have rubber chickens, cute little bags, Napoleon Dynamite gum etc.
Definitely a great place to shop for tiny gifts and great cards. -

This store reminded me of a higher class San Francisco. I loved all the random knickknacks and interesting books ("What is Your Poo Telling You?" and "DIS-missals"). My favorite item in the store had to be the Jesus action figure - with posing arms and gliding capabilities! The Obama action figure was pretty great too. There a was great selection of greeting cards (some just as funny as the novelty items) and a ton of other great little treasures. I love Chicken Scratch! I picked up a couple funny gag gifts for a friend's going away party and I can't wait to see what a big hit they are!

Chicken Scratch has been a long time favorite store for birthday cards and interesting gifts you can be sure no one else thought of. This store carries some of the funniest and least politically correct birthday cards you will find anywhere. They also carry journals and some very fun wrapping papers. I wandered in today to find my best friend a birthday card for her 28th birthday. I found many that would make her mother cringe, and couldn't decide on just one, so I bought three, all of which Im sure she won't put out in public. I also picked up some miniature rubber chickens and magnetic poetry. This is definitely the go to store for rubber chickens and really everyone should have at least one. They have three different sizes of choose from so you can get the right chicken for you. I love this store for the crazy gag items which keep me going back whenever there is a birthday coming up. I also go back for the Junior Warheads which I haven't been able to find anywhere else! If you are a fan of disgustingly sour candies then this is the place to pick up a pack of mini version of the sourest candies around.
