Review from Heather V.
We had heard great things about this restaurant and came all the way from New York to check it out.
It is tucked away behind beautiful old brick buildings in a quaint courtyard. The outdoor patio was hopping and very inviting. We were seated upstairs where the tables were set very creatively- and the walls were adorned with old pictures of the restaurant & catering business. It was nice- but not fine dining, which was OK by me.
The food was very good. I ordered a chilled avocado soup & shrimp salad with sunflower seeds and their homemade vinaigrette. The food which my family ordered- namely, their seared scallop salad, was also very tasty.
All in all, here are the ratings:
Ambiance: 4/5 pigs
Service: 5/5 pigs
Food: 4/ 5 pigs
Price: 3/5 pigs
I'll give it 4 pigs & I'd come back. That is, if I'm ever in Canada again. -

A real downer.
Service was terrible.
I had the local tomato salad - quite good. And the "SEARED SEA SCALLOPS" also quite good.
However, my wife tried the "SMOKED WILD SALMON SALAD $15
Boston Lettuce with Beets, Potatoes, Green Beans, Heirloom Tomatoes and Crispy Fried Shallots, Lemon Chive Dressing". It was quite the disaster. Skimpy on the salmon, uncooked potatoes, uninspired beans and lettuce.
The restaurant was unwilling to adjust the price of the salad - offered lame excuses about not being able to do anything.
Their attitude at this restaurant really put me off - and they're off my list of recommendations. There are quite a number of good restaurants in Kingston. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. -

Great patio and a lovely brunch. The food was mildly inventive and very well prepared. The service was excellent. Highly recommended on a nice day for a patio lunch.

Fantastic Dinner!!! Everything from appetizers to dessert was delicious. Really enjoyed the dry rubbed ribs with Elvis sauce and the sea scallops with soy butter. Service was fantastic and the atmosphere and decor beautiful. The outside patio was gorgeous and looks like it would be a lot of fun on a warm summer night. We were visiting from the States with children and they also enjoyed themselves; not to mention the grilled cheese on the "kid's menu" was fantastic, lol! Would definitely recommend!

I've eaten here a couple of times, and it can be trusted to deliver a decent meal each time. The food is mostly French and well prepared. The service is quite good, but my favorite part about this place is the room. It is a gorgeous venue.
If you are looking for a home run in Kingston, this place is a safe bet. -
Review from Robert O.
Dining as part of a group of 4 adults and 5 children I was prepared for anything. Initially I was charmed by the restaurant's interior (old world) and pleasant staff. My host informed me that the restaurant served as a stable many years ago and was a fitting choice for a great dining experience. I went with a duck confit that included mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Other diners had a variety from scallops to ribs, all done to perfection. This was a home run and I would love to return. Also they make a very good classic martini! Oh Canada....

I'm going to have to agree with Jonathan when he says if you're a real foodie, you'll be sorely disappointed.
I was expecting a lot from this place, and while my steak was cooked as I like and my roasted potatoes were roasted potatoes, it didn't live up to the hype. This is not the fault of Chez Piggy...but the quality of the food in Kingston. I suppose I've been spoiled living in New York and Toronto, but this place just didn't do it for me.
I will say that the patio is pleasantly lit by sophisticated Christmas lights, and that the way it is nestled between buildings is romantic, but the whole place just feels really casual. If I'm paying $23 for steak frites, I want to feel like I'm at a place where I should be paying that much. I felt like I was eating in a bar patio a lot of the time, and not a restaurant, or at least one of the calibre that they claim to be at. -

We stumbled into a magical greystone courtyard, and were somehow drawn to this place. It must have been the name, and the warm glow emanating from within.
We were lucky enough to arrive during the restaurant's 30th bday celebration, so we figured this place had stood the test of time. We were not disappointed.
The prix fixe was an incredible value. He had a bacon cheddar soup followed by stuffed pork. I ordered a delish curried shrimp salad of heaping proportions and a creamy main of scallops, coconut yams and spinach. We were beyond satisfied-- my chocolate mousse was overkill, but his espresso cheesecake was light and fluffy and tops.
Whenever I happen to be in Kingston again, I'll for sure make a point of going here. -

(I wrote this review for my blog in April 2009, but have visited a few times since then and it's always been fantastic)
On Friday evening I visited Chez Piggy to celebrate my girlfriend's mother's birthday. I'd eaten at this acclaimed restaurant a few times before and it has yet to disappoint. I recommend it to anyone in Kingston looking to enjoy some excellent food.
2009 is the 30th anniversary of Chez Piggy's opening and to celebrate they have a special $30 flat rate for an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. I took full advantage of this promotion. Our table ordered a few appetizers to share. The guacamole was my favourite; it was spicy and creamy and served with whole wheat tortilla chips. The Cha Gio Vietnamese spring rolls were a table favourite and I would certainly order them again. The only minor qualm I had was with the daily pate--it was little liqudy.
For my entree I ordered the Pancetta-Wrapped Berkshire Pork Tenderloin with maple peach glaze. It was served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes (that could have used a bit more garlic), and sugar snap peas. The pork was cooked absolutely perfectly and the saltly flavour of the pancetta played off of the sweetness of the maple peach glaze wonderfully. This is something I might try to make at home for a dinner party in the future.
The highlight of the night was dessert. I'm a complete sucker for hazelnut so when I spotted the Mocha Hazelnut Apricot (cake? I think it was a cake) I had high hopes. Words cannot describe the decadence of this dessert. There were a few thin strips of apricot wafer in between the creamy mocha and hazelnut mixture giving the dessert a very unique texture. Yum! I plan on visiting the Pan Chancho bakery (owned and operated by the same people responsible for Chez Piggy) to try and track down this dessert for home consumption.
All-in-all everyone agreed that we had a great meal. Kignston has many great places to eat; you'll always be able to satisfy whatever craving you might have by walking downtown. Chez Piggy remains one of my favourites. -

Finally was in the right place at the right time... visited Chez Piggy after hearing for years from various sources that it was THE restaurant in Kingston. On the way up to Ottawa, stopped by for lunch on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon and sat outside. Very pleasant.
The food however, was not great. How in the world do you make fish cakes that don't taste like fish???? The only discernible flavours were onion and oil. My wife tasted them as well, agreed and I sent them back (can't remember the last time I did that, but it was a while ago). Replaced with a no-brainer smoked salmon plate... easy, except the featured ingredients of the accompanying salad were disappointingly sparse and overwhelmed by an unadvertised pile of red onions.
My wife had this bizarre spring roll salad thing that came with an rather disturbing (seriously, won't say what it smelled like) dipping sauce. She ate it, but let the dipping sauce sit it out after the first try.
We weren't expecting foodie heaven, just an enjoyable (and edible) meal. Considering that the waterfront area is almost teeming with other worthy-looking restaurants these days (haven't been in Kingston in many years), next time we'll give one of them a try.
Sorry Piggy... -

I have been to Chez Piggy a few times. It is very clean, and always welcoming. Seems good, right?! The food is okay. Nothing great, just okay. I also find it is overpriced for what you get.
Of all the things I bought, I got some great tea towels! True...loved them! -

How I long to love you, Pig. I was so excited to come here for the umteenth time, and bring my friends, eat on the patio, have some beers and enjoy the place. To say that this time they ruined it, is the grossest understatement I have made in ages. We specifically asked the host around 3:30 what time the lunch menu was served until, as the burgers and beers and sandwiches sounded perfect for our early dinner. They said to show up at 5:15 and it would be fine, they served it until 5:30. We had a party of 6, and not wanting to be a pain, we showed up at 5.
The waiter repeatedly pushed the dinner menu on us, and when we had told him for the third time we had come specifically for the lunch menu, he ignored us for a half an hour. He then talked about us the the waitress he handed us off to, and they sneered and laughed at us. From 15 feet away. Ew. I was getting mad, but was going to let it slide until after the meal. I NEVER complain at restaurants, but this was insane. We had to struggle to order drinks, and literally wave the new server down. I was completely embarrassed to have brought my friends there. After I had talked so highly of it. My burger must have been sitting under the heat lamp for the whole extra hour it took to bring it out. The bun had turned into mush and literally stuck to the plate. Horrid. I finally had to get the manager after our waitress told my friend to wait when she asked for a drink, and then purposfully skipped over her with the fresh parm. We were punished and ridiculed for 2 hours, and we got a round of drinks comped and my burger, which was a joke, as well. The manager was very nice, but I am permanently soured after that circus. I had to get up in the middle of my meal (which I couldn't eat) to talk to the manager. The waitress then told my friends she was sorry I had a problem with the service. They had to inform her that it was not only EVERY ONE of us that was mad, but we heard other tables complaining. This also is furthered by the fact that on their amazing patio, which is dog friendly, there was a dog dry heaving and throwing up for 10 minutes. YUM! Just what everyone wants to see when they are paying $30 for a plate of food. Just sad. My family has been going there since I was very young, and we have always raved about it. This was hands-down the most disappointing dining experience I have had in years. You would get better service at TGI-Fridays. Seriously. -

Okay...if you're a real foodie, you'll be sorely disappointed in this place. It defies logic to consider this place as a great food spot. The atmosphere is great in the courtyard but "grandma's house" inside. Most of the food seems from a diner kitchen and is of little value. Everytime I go here, I'm disappointed.

Food is good...atmosphere is better. As usual the offspring have a difficult time maintaining the hard work of their parents. This is true here. It's reputation is simply on Zal's name and quite frankly..the food might wow an Ontario tastebud....but for folks from serious dining cities this is quite ordinary with a great courtyard.

I've only been to Chez Piggy once, but I'll never forget it, and I hope to reinforce the memory with many future visits. The setting was charming and the food and service were wonderful. As an appetizer I ordered oysters on the half shell. I wondered if I was taking a chance by doing so, but they were outstanding, along with everything else I ordered. (For some reason Yelp currently categorizes it as a breakfast and brunch restaurant, but Chez Piggy does serve dinner.)

Our favorite restaurant in the area. We drive all the way from the u.s. to eat here. Of course there isn't much to be had in Alexandria Bay. Our daughter also likes sneaking bread to the birds which is frowned upon. Sitting in the outdoor patio with a glass of wine is just perfect.
