A friend of mine took me here yesterday.  Let me tell you that this place didn't disappoint in the least.

I had the New Yorker.  The meat was tender, the bread was spectacular.  Honestly, if that wasn't the best sandwich I've had in my 31 years, I'm REALLY trying to remember what could've topped it.

Call in advance to save a little time, but to say I'll be a repeat customer is a gross understatement.

Okay - so I grew up in this neighborhood.  I used to play video games in this liquor store about 30 years ago.  Then - I may or may not have bought beer here before I was 21.  But that isn't important and likely wasn't me and was probably different ownership.  But what is important is the great deli counter.

Turkey, bacon, avocado, red onions, mayo, lettuce and cheddar on a roll.  Stupendous sandwiches.  The sandwich I described is the TBAC and it is awesome.  Why four stars then?  No dill pickle?  Come on - a deli always gives a dill pickle with their sandwiches.  Right?

Holy shenanigans! So I randomly searched for a sandwich shop in my area and decided that a place called Cheers can not be bad.

When you walk in it will have an old school feeling to it, the neighborhood I grew up in had a deli/ liquor store like this. The guy at the deli is nice, helped me out, and when I asked for extra pepper jack on my sandy he didn't start groaning about it, he smiled and said "no problem! I'll throw some extra pepper jack on there for ya!"

I walked around, got myself a soda and some chips, and sat for a few minutes while they toasted my sandwich to perfection.

I got the southwest chicken sand, the chicken is tender, they didn't skimp on the avocado. Speaking of which they didn't skimp on anything, I could only get through about half of my sandwich and the other half is gonna be lunch tomorrow! The sandwich has a nice heat to it, great crunch, the buffalo ranch has a nice definition to it.

As Guy Fiere would say "ON POINT!", but I'm not guy, so I am gonna say that this is . . .

"DISCO". That is what this place is. Trust the other reviews, trust this review. If you want a good sandwich from a locally run shop... bam!

Would I send my friends there? Yes, I would send the President of the USA there... Goodness gracious great balls of fire I am stoked I found this place!

What a MAJOR letdown Yelpers! I went way out of my way for the "best sandwich" in San Diego and was met with an average experience. First of all, the deli uses Dietz & Watson meat which is about 25% less expensive than Boars Head, and well, you get what you pay for. Sprouts grocery store sells similar made to order Dietz & Watson sammies for $4 each - just sayin'.

The customer service was seriously lacking. There were three people ahead of me and I waited 10 minutes for my sandwich. Then it just sat on the counter ready to go and I didn't hear them announce it. When I finally realized the sandwich sitting there was mine and I grabbed it, they didn't say sorry or acknowledge I'd been waiting for 10 minutes. None of the employees smiled or acted friendly. We're in SD people, not Detroit!!!

I'll take my $7 to Chris' Liquor and Deli in OB where they serve Boars Head sammies and smiles.

This place is amazing! Best sanwhiches in town. Everyone we take there falls in love with it.
Sandwhiches run between $6-$7. Drink isn't included, but you can purchase drinks and chips or whatever from the liquor store.
Everything is made to order, so it can take a while. Calling ahead saves time.
This place is a must if you are in the neighborhood!

Wow what a good reuben! The corned beef was moist, flavorful with just the right amount of fat. The Ambrosia fruit salad is a nice treat too it almost tastes like custard with fruit in it! Unfortunately my pastrami sandwich got mixed up with someone else's chicken club and I didn't discover it until I got home. However,  they were so nice when I called in and said my next pastrami sandwich is free any time I want it. Will take them up on that soon! Delicious deli food!

    Simple short and accurate review:

    Pros:
    * Everything I've had there has been exceptionally delicious
    * Ingredients have always been fresh
    * I CANNOT say enough good things about their sandwiches, I absolutely love them. I could eat them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner... or all three.

    Con:
    * You may encounter a long wait if you're a walk-in. This is easily remedied, however, just call-in your order in advance. 619-463-9991. They have menus that you can take home.
    * I don't like their Macaroni Salad (the side that comes with the sandwich), so I request Potato Salad in its place. Their sides aren't the best in my opinion, but who gives a sh*t when you're sandwich tastes like it was made by the gods!
    * Not the best for a group. I mean, it's located inside a liquor store, so don't expect much. It's more of a take-out place, or feel free to sit inside (or out) on tables that are made to fit two people (comfortably).

Recommendation: The New Yorker (hot) - take it how they recommend it, I think it's on the French Roll, but don't quote me on that.

A deli in a liquor store? wtf?? i'll admit. at first i was apprehensive.

solid 4 star rating. good hangover food, decent prices, and a few tables/chairs to sit down in.   They have a veggie section in their menu as well for us vege heads. I had the veggie burger and it was full of sprouts, etc. and actually tasted healthy because of all the vegetables.  all the sandwiches taste good as well, and you get a hearty portion.

    done.

This is my FAVORITE place for sandwiches.
I wish I would have known about this place, it is just that phenomenal.  I go at least once a week, especially if I'm tailgating-they even have a San Diego Padres Chicken sandwich which I have yet to try but it's definitely on the list to try!  Also they have the Chainsaw! Which is a roast beef sandwich with black pepper garlic and whipped cream cheese! ON THE SANDWICH! They even have a few breakfast items that I have yet to taste.
They have a big selection of sammiches ranging from roast beef, ham, chicken, turkey, salad, and veggie sandwiches.  There's at least 8 kinds of breads, LOTS of different cheeses and extras to load up on your sandwich.  Each comes with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato and red onions, standard.

I've had the TURKEY BAJA-turkey, avocado, jalapeno jack cheese-YUM on a french roll. You can really taste the jalapeno in the jack and the rest of the sammich is awesome too.

I've also grown close with THE GODFATHER-capocollo, cotto salami, Italian salami, provolone cheese on a french roll with delicious dressing.  Man-it's been a long time since I had a sandwich THIS F-ING EXCELLENT.  Each sandwich is in between $5.49-$7.49 and well worth it.

Along with the deli, Cheers has wine, liquor and beer along with a fine selection of chips!  I am encouraging you to check this place out.

I remember coming here once after my clinicals at API (yea, the crazy ppl place). Another student suggested it to me and a friend. There's not much food choices around the hospital if you didn't bring a sack lunch. From outside it looks like an old liquor store. Inside it looks like what you would expect plus a small deli inside with chairs and tables. Not sure if it's still the same now as it was a couple years ago.

So. Ordered a sandwich (don't remember what I got though) and bought an Arizona iced tea from the fridge. Picked up my order and took off. Little did I know what was waiting for me in the bag. Yummyness. Yes. Almost forgot about this place til I saw it on the Yelp welcome page. I think I would be a regular if it was closer to home. But I'm seriously thinking about paying them another visit. We shall see...

For a deli / liquor store combo I am always a little skeptical. Is it clean? Up to code? etc. This place sets the standard for a deli / liquor store combo. Seriously you won't find a wider selection of beers, drinks, chips, and tasty deli sandwiches under the same roof in SD.

I would suggest eating in the little area in the wine section, not the busy deli area, it's classy and quiet ;)

My first time to experience this deli and it's sooooo gooood!!! I had the S.D. Padre chicken sandwich and it was on a french roll which had great flavor. The sandwich is pretty big, I could've shared the second half or saved it for later. It comes with a side of macaroni salad and compliments the sandwich. I will definitely go back to try the rest of the menu.

I used to live down the street from Cheers liquor deli and they have simply the BEST sandwiches.  I have tried most of the sandwiches on their list and they are ALL AWESOME!  I love hot sandwiches and they really take their time to make sure you're getting the best.  I like their Chicken Cordon Bleu and their Chicken Santa Fe the best.

I'm only rating their sandwiches on this review, but if you need liquor, beer or wine they have a great selection but their prices aren't so great.  I suggest you go next door to Keils grocery store where they always have alcohol on sale.

Easily one of the best sandwich places in San Diego, and as others say, it is very unassuming tucked inside this run-of-the-mill liquor store.

Actually-- I take that back. The Liquor store end of it actually has a great selection of Beer, Wine, and Booze.

The sandwiches here do not disappoint. These guys are PACKED with meat, cheese and all the fixings. Bread is always great, and they have a great variety of it too. They have a wide selection of sandwiches, or will be more than happy to make up what you want.

The service is always outstanding. With as much traffic as this place gets, I wouldn't even mind a little sub-par service now and again, in this day and age, I'd almost (sadly) expect it. Not at Cheers though. The staff are always VERY friendly, and helpful. It's also nice to see people hustling behind the counter when it's busy, I have a great appreciation for places that show their A-Game when it's needed.

My only bit of advice (which is also a little common sense) is if you go during the lunch hour, I would call ahead. This place gets VERY busy, and after you visit you'll know why.

Cheers Deli, what a place.  Could have ordered pizza last night, or thai, or anything... but decided to get a real sandwich.

Called them up and ordered a hot pastrami sandwich (I will upload a photo) and it came with a small helping of potato salad.  Not sure if they make the potato salad there or not, but regardless, it was awesome.

I ordered jalepenos on the pastrami and was kind of expecting the standard kinda warm jalepenos and not the spicy ones, but I was VERY excited to REAL jalepenos! I took a huge first bite and as I tasted them I was searching my fridge for milk... while that only lasted a second or so, it was so great to have good jalepenos for this chili-lover.

The sandwich came on an 8" french roll. The bread was quite good, and soaked up some of the juice pretty well without making it mushy. The pastrami tasted great and the finely diced lettuce made my sandwich that much better.

The guy behind the deli that I spoke to was as nice as could be when I picked everything up. So for customer service, A+.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars vs. 5 stars is that comparing it to other places I have been, it wasn't the top of the top... But honestly, if you want a sandwich anywhere around the San Carlos area, go here!!! I really think you will be very happy with the food and the liquor store associated with it. I will certainly eat here more often and can't wait to see this place continue to get rave reviews and make all the deserved money they can!

I swear some of the best meals in town can be had at liquor stores...

Cheers is an amazing find. I lived about two miles from here for a year and consumed at least 365 inches of their sandwiches in that time. Here are some examples of what they offer:

    1. San Diego Padres Chicken. (My favorite.) Marinated chicken breast with bacon, avocado, melted cheddar and jack cheese on a toasted french roll.

    2. The Godfather. Capocollo, cotto salami, Italian salami, mortadella and melted provolone on a toasted french roll.

    3. Chainsaw. (Shockingly delicious.) Roast beef with melted provolone cheese, served on a french roll with whipped cream cheese and bacon.

Go there soon. If you like sandwiches this place is worth the drive. Also, they take their time -- perfection takes time -- so call ahead.

Hands down, the best sandwiches in San Diego. There is always A LOT of meat on the sandwiches and they are very reasonably priced ($6-$8). This place is usually pretty busy around lunchtime (20-30 minute wait, yikes!), so I recommend you call ahead to order a sandwich or go at a less busy time. I also highly recommend the Malibu Turkey sandwich, it is so delicious!!

    EXCELLENT.

Truly remarkable little hole in the wall Deli in San Carlos.

As a liquor store, you seen one, you seen em all (mostly), but inside this little store lies a hidden gem, a jewel of deli deliciousness.

They serve up exceptional sandwiches, and you SHOULD go.

Perfect after a summit of Cowles Mountain for a refreshing bite.

If you are nearby, you SHOULD stop in.  It is worth it.

So it was a rainy afternoon, and was contemplating how badly I wanted a sandwich. After my roommate so callously said, "why don't you just go to Subway?", I figured she wasn't the one to ask advice. But I didn't have to worry: Yelp! was on the way!

Initially, I was inclined (by the ratings) to try BMH... but it was a little further than I was willing to drive. I called them, and after a VERY rude phone convo, I decided to throw that plan out the window.

Then, what's this? A liquor store/sandwich shop with glowing ratings that's only A MILE AND A HALF from my house?! To the batmobile!

So my boyfriend and I pull up, and immediately I get "the look" from him, you know the one: "why are we at a liquor store for food?"

After all, we've both seen our fair share of skanky liquor store delis, so I was a little concerned.

    And then we walked in.

The smell of delicious baking bread, coupled with spicy veggies hit my nose. A friendly older man at the center counter (who ran, presumably, the liquor store AND sammy shop) smiled warmly and greeted us. We walked to the IMPECCABLY clean counter (I'm a stickler for that), and were greeted again by the deli crew, then told to take our time to order.

...good thing, too. My GOD these  people have a lot of sandwiches.

I ordered the hot chicken cordon bleu sandwich; my boyfriend chickened out and got the Reubin. Our sandwiches came quickly (around 10 minutes for two BIG hot sammies), and were steamy with goodness.

They were still hot when we got them home!

Chicken Cordon Bleu: Maaan... this was good. LOTS of hot honey mustard, marinated chicken, tomatoes and what have you, gooey swiss cheese and ham piled high. My GOD.

Reubin: Good, even for a Reubin (what can I say, I'm biased). But my boyfriend downed that bad boy like it was the antidote!

Pros: GREAT service, clean establishment, cool vibe, great selection, super fresh ingredients, ample parking, liquor store attached to purchase your drink.

Cons: It's in a tricky spot on the corner; the sides seem to leave a bit to be desired (but I liked my pasta salad just fine).

Overall: This is my new sandwich shop, bar-none hands-down. PLUS, while you're waiting, you can go grab yourself some beers to take home with you for when you enjoy your meal! And who can beat that?!

I live about a mile away from Cheers and I did not even know that it existed until Mikey from the Mikey Show gave it a shout out, and I can't believe that I've never been there.  Every sandwich that I have had here is amazing.  The Garlic Chicken Parmesan and the Corned Beef are my favorites.

The only negative thing that I have to say about Cheers is that it takes about 15-20 minutes for them to make a sandwich, but if you call in your order it will be ready waiting for you to pick it up.

I also came here in highschool after having passed by it many times but never going in. I never thought that a liquor store deli could be so delicious. Its pretty much famous in the area. The sandwhiches are huge and come with a pickle and side of macaroni salad. I always get pepperonchini peppers instead of the salad.

They also have pretty much every chip known to man to accompany your sandwhich and fountain soda. Strange, but for some reason the dr.pepper here tastes better than anywhere else.

Order the Padre - Hot.  Dude.  Its the shit.

Gotta play the lotto too while there.

And must sit in the wine room in "the back".  Awesome.

I have had the best sandwiches San Diego has to offer.  It helps when you've lived here your whole life.  I've lived in La Mesa for the last 9 years and I just discovered this place.  I had the Chainsaw, genius by the way putting Cream Cheese on a sandwich, and my wife had the TBAC.  Mine was toasted and the RB was fresh and hot.  The bread was perfectly toasted not like when you make a sandwich with toast at home.  The outside was crunchy and the inside was soft and delicious.  The bread must be from a local bakery cause it was perfect.  Even my wifes untoasted sandwich was fantastic.  Great bread, Great meat, fresh thinly sliced onion.  It was absolutely excellent.
If you are a sandwich aficionado this spot is for you.  DZ Akins you are dead to me.   Ok so DZs sandwiches are great they're just double the price of this place.  All the sandwiches at Cheers are about $7.

Oh and the staff of the deli and liquor store were super friendly.  I will be back about 1000 times.  I need to try every sandwich!
