Absolutely delicious roast chicken! You can find this charming family run Portuguese restaurant on the corner of Ellice Avenue and Wall Street. They had a previous restaurant a few years back by the same name, located on Sargent Avenue. This part of town is more of an industrial area but there are pockets of family owned restaurants but you have to look hard to find the good ones.

As I got out of my car, the delicious aroma of roast chicken filled the air near the restaurant. It's a small, clean and modest restaurant that can probably serve about 20 people. The menu is pretty small and is filled with mostly Portuguese fare and of course roast chicken.

There were cod cakes, shrimp, mussels on the appetizer menu. The lunch menu offers about 4 sandwiches ($8.95) that comes with a side of roasted potatoes - ranging from roast chicken, steak, pork etc. My friend had the steak sandwich and loved it - he said it had a ton of flavour.

The main entrees range between $12.95-$18.95 and all of them come with bread, roast potatoes and a house salad. There's the standard Portuguese dish called bacalhao (cod with shredded potatoes and eggs. There's also a grilled pork  medallion dish with sauteed onions. But I came here for the roast chicken and man, was it good! I ordered the quarter chicken dinner ($12.95) - the chicken was seasoned perfectly. Crispy skin, tender and juicy meat inside. You will never want to go back to a grocery store rotisserie chicken after this!  But it gets even better, the roasted potatoes are possibly the best potatoes I've ever had anywhere. They were so crisp on the outside but so soft and fluffy on the inside. And the potatoes were so packed with flavour...I wouldn't be surprised if the potatoes were soaked in drippings from the chicken, roasted and then deep fried to get that perfect texture and flavour. I'd go back just for those potatoes - they were that good. The house salad was nothing special (tasted like an Italian dressing) but it added a nice tang to a very savoury dish. The bread that came with the dish had a thin crust and a fluffy and light centre to it. Definitely ask for a side of the piri piri hot sauce. It has the same tang as a tabasco and provides a good amount of heat.

There were a lot of desserts on display like cakes and cookies but I was too full to try any of them.

Apparently, you can order the roast chicken as take out if you give them 2 hours notice - I think the take out price for a  whole roasted chicken with side of potatoes goes for $15. Pretty good deal when the half chicken dinner is about the same price.

Service is very nice and warm. And there's a few parking spots behind the restaurants, or else you'll have to park on Ellice or Wall.

    They're open daily from 10am-3pm and from 5 pm-8pm.

Something must have changed here! Over cooked mussels, dry pork medallions, salad from a bag and tasteless chicken!! One of the worst meals I have ever had in Winnipeg

We enjoyed our dinner completely. Chicken was succulent even though the white meat was chosen; we kinda expected it to be dry but it was wonderfully moist. I was not sure what to expect but even though the pork loin looked like Salisbury steak it tasted great. Great wine (we accepted the recommendation and had a portuguese white wine called Terres de Paul).
The atmosphere wasn't great. I hate it when restaurants with a particular cuisine have "BOB FM" playing. This should have had some music from their country. Some better colours maybe. The owner (and chef, I gather) served us and it was like being served by a Portuguese mama. When we asked for our bill she said, "No, no! Relax, talk".
All in all a good evening. I will go back again to try their fish (it's portuguese for pete's sake!) and the steak. They also had some desserts but we were full.
I would easily recommend this place to others.
