One of my favorite restaurants in the city. Great spot, interesting set up includes a private table in an old freight elevator, nice ambiance, and fantastic food. Restrooms are tidy, party room, view of kitchen, street parking, as well as, a small parking lot.
Good service. The servers are knowledgable and the owners are 'hands-on'.
You must try the S'mores for Two - complete with your own private fire at the table. Veal was AWESOME. I've actually never had a less than great meal here.
The lunch menu is far better than its competitors. You can get a proper meal instead of sandwiches, tapas or lighter fare. Show me the meat! -

My first impression of Character's was, "Holy crap, this is fancy. Am I even going to like this food?"
For my birthday, my boyfriend treated me to a night of fine dining in Edmonton. This swanky little place is a great combination of cozy, classy and modern.
The menu at first glance is overwhelming. There was alot of foods I definitely don't eat often and to be honest, it had me a little concerned.
But then the appetizers came - bacon wrapped scallops. And it was the tastiest appetizer I have ever had.
By the time the main course arrived, I was warming up to the lofty-feel atmosphere where the kitchen is visible from almost all angles of the restaurant.
The main course was delicious. I branched out and had sea bass with black rice and pesto and I was more than impressed.
The service was 10/10, and for dessert: smores for two with your own mini-campfire to roast marshmallows. Awesome? I think so.
For the entire experience, the prices were reasonable.
I would go back in a heartbeat.
Two thumbs up. -

"Dinner for one" isn't so lonely after all! Friendly staff sat me in a plush seat in this warehouse come resto. Wood beams, fireplace, wrought iron fixtures warm up the space. A friendly service, fast presentment and tasty dishes: it started not with a bread service but with a potato chip and gourmet fry service (with spicy sauce). I tempered myself as the beef tenderloin was arriving: tender and moist and delicious on a bed of mash with fresh cooked greens... The fried macaroni ball was a curious but welcome suprise! Add to the meal the most amaZing bread pudding and I slept like a baby....

It wasn't the first time I went to Character for dinner (or lunch). I truly prefer the food at lunchtime I have to say, their salads are quite good andwhen the weather is ncie, the patio is very enjoyable.
We had a delightful evening, mainly due to us following the waiter's recommendation for wine. It was very good indeed, the first bottle and then the half bottle that followed.. wine by the glass are not fantastic though.
The food is not fantastic i have to say although the main courses are much better than the starters. The salad of octopus was a bit bland. My beef fillet was very good but then we are in Alberta! The cheese platter could improve in quality.
The decor could be fantastic if they changed the furniture. The place has a very warm feel to it, and a cool NY feel too (especially if they changed the chairs for something more modern).
Overall a good place for a nice evening which would be great if the food was better. -

Close to being a really good restaurant but it's just missing something. The mains were prepared properly (we tried the Flat Iron Steak and Tuna) but the entree sides seemed to be off. I realize it's a fusion style restaurant but serving a nice cut of Tuna cooked perfectly with Ratatouille and a Balsamic Glaze just didn't go. The steak was done to perfect medium rare and flavored nicely but again the potatoes were not flavored at all and the carrots were raw. A $40 plate should be a taste explosion with flavors that meld together seamlessly. I believe the chef is talented and is capable of doing a better job of putting together a better menu plan. This restaurant is so close to being great but not quite.

Characters is probably the best "fine dining" in Edmonton both in respect of food quality and atmosphere. That being said, the food can be inconsistent (though the steak is solid (being Alberta)), but I believe it's one of the top two or three meals you will have in the city. The room is a very nice converted warehouse, but the furniture needs an update (it could actually be a fantasic space if they did so - get rid of the big old chairs). The service is good, and we have some very nice wines - ask for a recommendation that might not be on the wine list. It was a bit dead on a thursday evening, but I understand this is their transition season (it picks up in fall and winter).

over all i was very please with this restaurant. I went on valentines day. I felt comfortable and relaxed. and the food was excellant. i really love the big chairs that you sit in. i felt like royalty.I had the duck, it was soso. They didnt ask me how i wanted it cooked so it came out a little undercooked. but not a huge deal. it was still very good

Characters has gone downhill... this used to be one of my favorite restaurants in town so we figured this would be fun to come back for our family GTG... boy, were we wrong! Used to be a solid 4 stars up to 2007, but this is max a 3 star now.
Service is poor. There were enough servers in the restaurant but ours was terrible. Our drinks went low several times during the dinner and he didn't even know any vegetarian or dairy-free options on the menu. One main dish came much later than the others and he had difficulty splitting the bill and put incorrect items together, even after we divided it up for him! Duh.
In terms of the food, the bread service is now gone. They do this french fry and potato chip with miso gravy instead which is pretty tasty. The food itself was OK. My beef tenderloin was quite nice and the meat was very flavorful with nice presentation. Other dishes ordered were the duck (great feedback around the table) and a few pasta options (average).
For dessert, the chocolate belgian waffle with ice cream and chocolate dipped oranges sounded like a no-brainer for me... unfortunately, the batter they used made the waffle quite dry so it didn't have the crisp shell and light interior that I usually like.
All in all, a big disappointment to come back to what used to be one of my favorite restos when I lived in Edmonton. Perhaps I've become a Vancouver snob, but this is definitely skippable, especially when your entrees are $35-$40 each. -

It's been a while since I've been to Character's and I SWEAR the next time I go, I will have some of that bloody Glenfiddich.
Managed to get the Shaft...apparently that's a good thing but I felt a little claustrophobic, so we only closed the doors a weeee bit.
Being between Christmas and NYE, the place was understandably empty that night. I was told I HAD to have the puddaheh = Perogies. They were good perogies, but they perogies so that is all I'm going to say.
Having consumed my weight in Alberta red-meat that week, I wanted something different. My main was exquisite: the ahi tuna was the perfect specimen. Well cooked with a nice glaze. I had no trouble finishing that - side was ratatouille I believe, which was nicely prepared as well.
Wine selection was strong with a great selection of reds. -

I wanted to plan a special New Year's outing for my boyfriend a few years ago, so I took him to Characters for dinner. It was a small, classy place, with sleek flooring and modern decor, soft lighting and an elegant feel. I was impressed, for the most part, but after spending a good deal of money on a delicious meal that left us hungry, I was disappointed the experience wasn't a bit more memorable. There should have been something to distinguish Characters - like great character, for starters?! - but it was just another high-end trendy restaurant that had enough cachet to overcharge. I got a steak that was perfectly cooked, but so small I had to consciously eat slowly to make the meal stretch. It's too bad. I'll never go back or recommend it to others when there are so many other fine dining experiences in the city with more personality, personable service, signature dishes and ambiance than here.
