Honestly if they just served the crispy tofu, I would still come here. The service, food, and uniqueness of the flavours you can have here are what keep us coming back.
I can be a bit scared of spicy food sometimes, though I have gotten a lot better, and the food here is never just spicy it's extremely flavourful with heat, there is a big difference.
I wish there were more Malaysian restaurants in Ottawa, but I am glad we have one excellent place. -

I did the cardinal sin of trying out a new restaurant and not trying the food that the restaurant is named for. I did not really try to much of the Malaysian food and stuck more with the Indonesian food.
The shrimp rolls which were small and ok. I really hated the ketchupy hot sauce that came with them. It tasted like ketchup, fish oil and something smokey I couldn't make out.
The Beef Rendang (Malaysian) was my favourite item that we ordered but for some reason had this slightly dry texture. It was pretty good but I wish it was a little spicier.
The Bali Beef / Bembu Bali (Indonesian) could be amazing because the sauce is really good! I didn't love it though and really only loved the sauce.
The Chef's Special Tofu really fell short. I love tofu and this dish was just boring and flavourless, sorry chef!
The service was pretty good and I'd definitely try this place again as the dishes seem interesting. I've had some great Malaysian and Indonesian food and this place has some pieces of a dish that are great...just none of the dishes as a whole were, but it could have just been the ones I tried. -

Based on Yelp reviews, my wife and I made a special trip after work today to have dinner at Chahaya Malaysia.
Oh my gosh! We had a wonderful---in fact an extraordinary meal---from traditional appetizers, main dishes, through to desert and different teas.
Upon entering, I had a big appetite. Their variety of dishes, quality, flavor and heat of the food (temperature and spice) was ideal---I'm lost for words to describe how tasty everything was. We both savored every bite---portion sizes were completely satisfying.
We were served by both the owner/operators---a wonderful couple. The lady, who was our primary host, was sincerely interested and responsive to our every need during our meal and to questions about choices/recommendations. I can't tell you how many times I said thank you for her being so very good to us during our stay.
Right to the end---even after after paying the bill---my words echoed again and again to our hostess and host---Thank You! Thank you!
If you haven't yet been to Chahaya Malaysia---plan to get over there as soon as you can! -

Spicy? Yes. Delicious? Yes. Friendly? Authentic? Yes. Prepared with care, and served with genuine warmth, Chahaya Malaysia remains a beacon to home-cookin' Malaysian-style. With an owner/chef who is meticulous about quality and cares deeply about his menu, he speaks lovingly of #25 (beef rebnang), #39 and many others.
The location is convenient for east enders, but its location shouldn't deter anyone looking for a pleasant and delicious dining experience. -

For good authentic Malaysian and Indonesian food, Chahaya Malaysia is definitely worth checking out.
Make sure to try out the spring rolls and chicken satay for appetizers. Their various selections of soup are also really good. The five-star beef is an excellent main course selection.
Chahaya Malaysia is a family-owned restaurant in the east-end of the city, and has been a staple here for decades. The husband and wife who own the restaurant are very helpful and knowledgable about Malaysian cuisine. Prices are reasonable. -

Really, really, really good, authentic food.
Super hot and hearty main dishes with more flavours infused in every bite that I could figure out.
The curry was so good that after the meat/veggies were gone, there was a fight to finish the left over sauce on some rice.
The owners are really great too, super friendly and great to ask for menu suggestions. -

As a vegan I can only vouch for the veggie options but I can assure you this is some of the best Asian food you will find in Ottawa, particularly if you love spicey food. A knowledgeable and friendly staff that will be more than happy to recommend something. The wheat noodles are incredible.

The food here was great, and well worth the trip from one side of the city to the other. The service was good, everything was delicious (and hot! Believe them when they tell you that you should be prepared for some burning when you go for the highest level of spice.), and the portions were extremely generous. A great introduction to Malaysian food.

Awesome food. They have truly spicy food, but you can order most dishes to suit your taste. Everything I have had at Chahaya has been delicious!

Will never go here again. The "lady" (owner's wife/waitress) pushed one of the customers entirely without initiation. Read full details below.
Today was our second trip to Chahaya Malaysia. We had my sister and her family of husband and two kids visiting us from Toronto. My sister had a craving for Asian food and so we decided to take her here. We reached the place around 8 and indeed it was pretty crowded. We were a family of 6 (4 adults, two kids) and my sister was concerned about the kids falling asleep. First we had two wait about 20 minutes at the door despite the lady knowing we were standing there, and despite there being at least two places right in front of us where we could sit. After that, another bus boy (who was just hired) came and took us right to the back of the room to this table in the far left corner that is almost hidden (you can't see or call the waiter). We then waited again, for about another 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the lady came and served all the tables around us, didn't even serve us water or chips like they usually do, or even pay attention to us. In order to get a better view of the room and to see if the other waiter was less busy, I moved back in my chair, momentarily ending up on two legs of the chair. The lady came and without warning, without saying a word, pushed me in with force and went to another table. My wife and my jaws dropped! We couldn't believe what had just happened. She then came over a few seconds later while we were talking about leaving and said, "I'm not ignoring you just so you know". To which I replied, "I know you're not, but there's a way. You just pushed me! If I was in your way you could have said 'Excuse Me' and I would have moved". I was totally calm and not rude even at this point. To this she said sarcastically, "Excuse me sir!" and left. We had obviously had it at this point and got up to leave. She gave me a look when going out as if I was the one being inconsiderate to which I said, "For someone who is in the service business, you're pretty horrible!". She replied, "You were rocking my chair sir". I didn't reply and walked off. When we were leaving there was another party waiting at the door.
Now I know that this restaurant has already established a name for itself and they know that no matter how they serve or treat people, people will come. So they don't care and disrespect people. If she was an employee, she would have been fired long time back.
We had a bad experience the first time around as well, when she insulted my wife saying, "You're not at a chinese restaurant!", when all my wife had asked was "Do you have something with nuts?".
We ignored and went back coz we thought the food was decent. But the only thing good here is the chef special chicken, and even that's not worth the bad service.

You have been in business for 25 years because of your husband's cooking, who I've also heard is a great person. You've only done damage to his business by mistreating clients. Come down from cloud 9, stop resting on your husband's laurels, and treat people with respect.Comment from Margaret A. of Chahaya Malaysia 7/1/2009
