Review from Arabella H.
Calgary, AB
The centre of hope in Calgary holds up to 400 residents, and also has a woman's center, emergency housing, and mental health services, food and life skills training, counseling to help people get back on their feet and a chapel and recreational services.
The center of hope is called the center of hope, because it gives people a chance to make their life better, a hope of what can come from small changes. It gives homeless people a chance to regain their foothold in modern society. It encourages the homeless to become either clean from drug or alcohol abuse, and to encourage them to get jobs. For example if someone comes to the center intoxicated, they are given a mat and they are able to sleep on the lower level of the center. As they improve, they are able to move up levels and access more of the center. It gives them something to look forward to, a reason to get clean. Instead of knowing tomorrow you will wake up on the street, you know that when you show signs of improvement, you will be able to not sleep on a mat, but in a bed.
