Review from Rick C.
On this rainy Friday, Sophia and I decided to get some Taiwanese cafe goodness at Cattle Cafe in Richmond.
We both ordered the specialty set menu noodle combinations with milkshakes. I went for Mango and she got Strawberry. It was tasty and had a good consistency and blend.
With the choose your own beef noodles, you choose your type of soup broth, two toppings, and noodles. Sophia went with a peanut broth, beef brisket, fish cakes, and udon noodles. It had a solid peanut taste.
I ordered satay soup with beef brisket, beef balls, and rice noodles. The broth was really hearty and not too spicy. It was a big bowl and portion yet we both wanted more noodles.
After a full meal, we still had to get some egg waffles. There were very crisp, delicious, and better than Bubble Queen's. It was a pretty solid meal all around. -

Guess it's considered HK-style cafe but without the typical food like the baked pork chop over rice haha. It's more noodle bowl style, and geared towards the younger crowd. As I write, there's about 15 tables, out of 20, and only one family.
Tried the fish bowl soup base consists of beef & pumpkin, chose the vermicelli, comes with fish balls, tomato, cabbage, have to admit it's one huge portion for $8, which included a hot drink. Just ok. enough for 2 meals.
Also tried the satay beef w/ hand-made fish noodles, which was unique, and different. kinda thick, kinda airy, and wavy--almost like a spaghetti blown up, and quite heavy. that was a better soup base, w/ cabbage. apparently, it's the only place that makes it.
Looks clean and quite modern decor. much nicer than a typical HK style cafe. -

Cattle Cafe is your (slightly pricier) run of the mill HK-style cafe.
Parking is available in the nearby lot, but that lot is nowhere near big enough for this mall. Street parking is free after 2100.
There's usually a line-up here because the restaurant stays open later than most other places along Alexandra.
Food prices here are a good $2 or so over the competition. There's a decent soup combo where you select the soup base, noodle, toppings, and drink for $10 or so. The tom yum soup I had tasted mostly authentic, but the base was way too salty. I could feel my blood pressure rising.
Maybe the other dishes are better, but I'd recommend Deer Garden Signatures upstairs in the same mall, for better taste and value. -

I came here for lunch with my 4 year old daughter and ordered the usual faves :
* Parsley & Century Egg soup base, with chicken balls, fish tofu, and rice noodle. Plus, a side of crab claw balls (+ $1.50) and a regular cold drink (+ $1.00).
* Peanut & Chilli soup base, with basa fillet, fish tofu, and instant noodles. Plus, a side of chicken wings (+ $1.50) and a regular cold drink (+ $1.00).
And, when my daughter accidentally spilled her drink all over the table, they came and cleaned it up pretty quick AND gave her a new one, free of charge! That's above and beyond for us. Now, that's awesome service!
Just one of the reasons we keep coming back here. The food is awesome and the service is great!
High chairs, yes. Please note, straps are broken or missing.
Strollers, I wouldn't recommend it -- at all.Listed in: Family Friendly Places

XO Turnip Cake (I don't like turnip but I love this stuff)

I needed the spicy Szechuan soup again.
Great for those days you are feeling a bit of malaise. The spiciness helps to kick out that cold you are feeling and replace it with a Szechuan warmness and numbing tingling (warning, some of you may really not like it) sensation.
Funny after reading Stephen writing about his tapeworm thingy.
hahahaha. but I guess, I've got one too for their soup dishes.
My buddy Vincci had something that looked yummy too! And so Did Hubert Y and Kenneth N! Wow! I was at a table full of Yelpers!
That's got to be a good thing.
Deep fried chicken wings weren't so good today. I'm not much of a fan of feathers in my chicken wings. I had to push that thought aside and just eat it and then enjoy it.

Damn you Cattle Cafe!! Why must you make you're food choices so plentiful and tasty (most of the time)? Why?
It keeps me coming back. It makes me think of you all the time and so I find myself through some excuse or another that I am there.
Nomming my way through a bowl of noodle soup.

Review from Stephen Y.
Richmond, BC
So, after waiting for my slumbering wife to get out of bed, it was a bright and early 2PM in the afternoon and I needed to get some food in my belly as my tapeworm was getting hungry.
We got there at 2:45 and it was packed! Waited about 10-15 minutes to get a table and lucky for me, just in time for the 3pm specials.
They have the create-your-own bowl of noodles that are great. My wife ordered the spicy thai soup for the broth with enoki mushrooms and beef. The broth was really good and had a decent amount of kick. I should have ordered noodles but I was stupid and wanted to try something from their 3pm menu.
Not to say my baked pork chop on rice was terrible, but compared to the noodles, it was a bit of a let down. Too much rice and there wasn't much to the sauce (very little onions or anything else). The pork was okay, not dry or anything but there wasn't much of it.
That said, my lemon iced tea was quite good and refreshing and the meal itself wasn't expensive at all. $17 including taxes and tip.
I would go back again for their noodles and maybe try some of their other specials.Listed in: Noodles Pour Toi.

Everytime I come here it's always busy but turnover is quick enough. I ordered:
Chicken and ham in a coconut sauce with rice (it was creamy and flavourful with plenty of meat but I didn't know they had mushrooms - I don't like white button mushrooms =b)
Total = ~$6.75
filled my stomach and with an extra $1, I got a cold lemon tea =)
Service is alright, the waitress spilled the noodle soup onto the table and my friends chair - luckily no one got hurt.
Overall, good selection of food - next time I wanna try their "make your own noodle soup" option! -
Review from Vincci L.
Being now a regular at this place, I must recommend several other dishes that are quite good..
We've noticed that during the lunch rush, it comes in waves, so if you time it right, it will minimize your wait time. 12:30pm seems to be a safe bet.
Back to the dishes. Their baked seafood dish is quite good. Lots of seafood (fish, mussels, squid) in a cream sauce, baked in a casserole dish with fried rice. Even better, they have a 'half-half' rice, which is half baked pork chop and half baked seafood all in one dish. For my indecisive days, this is the one to get.
There's been a recent price increase of about $0.25 per dish, which isn't too bad, since you could still get lunch there for just under $10.Listed in: Lunching in Richmond, Noodle-ing., Laksa Love.

If anyone tells you Cattle Cafe and Deer Garden are the same thing, defriend them. Cattle is good, but definitely one step down from their upstairs neighbour. The great thing is they never have a line up, so if you're really hungry, you should go to Cattle. If you can wait, go upstairs. Their fish soup base is very good, but their noodle fixins' are not as good as Deer and it doesn't taste as fresh. Overall, it's a good HK Cafe; but it's just alright.

Slurp slurp! Gotta love their combo noodle soups! You can choose the soup base, what kind of protein, and the type of noodle. The combo comes with a drink. Add a couple dollars more and you can upgrade to a specialty drink or add in an appetizer.
I loved my fish broth. It was really tasty. Can't wait to try out all the different options and combinations. Their regular menu looked good as well. -

I came to this place for lunch with my mom the other day because someone posted a picture of french toast from this place on Facebook and it looked delicious. This little gem was so busy at lunch hour that people had to line up outside of the restaurant.
When my mom and I sat down, each of us ordered a noodle in soup which you get to pick the type of soup you want, the noodle and 2 toppings (if you want additional toppings, it's $1.00 for each topping). It was $7.50 for each bowl while we ordered the french toast that was for $4.50. This french toast was not like one BIG toast like other restaurants; it was 5 or 6 mini pieces with some butter on the top. Along the side, it has this honey syrup where you can do a slam dunk with each mini pieces...let me tell you, it was delicious! However, we couldn't finish this because my mom and my bowls were so large! The food was pipin' hot and that's a must when it comes to having noodles in soup - it must be hot (temperature wise).
I enjoyed the food very much and I would come back again to try the afternoon tea which goes from 3-6pm. 4 out of 5 stars! -

My friend and I just had manicures and pedicures done, so we were wearing flip flops in the middle of November. Hmmm... where to go eat dinner where there is no dress code and not get laughed at? Cattle Cafe!
Surprisingly good service. I've been to the Metrotown location before and expected the same service, but the waiters/waitresses at the Richmond location are pretty friendly.
I usually order the Noodles with 2 toppings with a drink for $8, but decided to try the fish and tofu mini hot pot this time. It really hit the spot on a cold night. She had the pork chop with rice. The sauce had pieces of bacon in it... you can't go wrong with bacon!
Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals! -

This is a good place to go for causal lunch. You can pick your own combination of topping, soup base and noodle.
Under $10 for soup of noodle with drink. What you can expect more? -

I love their noodle soups - esp the one with tomato and pumpkin sans msg. (I have trouble with msg because it leaves me extremely thirsty after.) It's great because the whole bowl is completely customizable, from the type of noodles to the choosing of toppings and of course you get to pick your own soup base!
The staff are fairly friendly, not extremely attentive though as with most Chinese restaurants. Price is fair since most of the meals include a drink.
This is a great little late night place; They are open until 11pm on most nights.
PS: They also have 'bubble waffles' which is what I usually get to-go as a snack for the movies. -

Last time I was here was in Apr 2011 & ordered some kinda chicken steak item with their rendition of cajun sauce that left me with indigestion. Wasn't my choice but I got out voted since I was already leary of Chinese cooks making western food. Now I think of it that sauce was kinda gross...very heavy on the fat / cream & gave me indigestion. That same thought now prevents me from going to places like these. Typical quality u can expect from an HK grease pit featuring a mainly unappealing selection of western food but some of my Honger friends seem to love this stuff partly bcuz it's cheap...u get what u pay for! I'd rather pay a bit more for food that is more palatable to me. Wouldn't be surprised if they use ketchup instead of tomato sauce & paste as the base for their pasta sauce. The thought is disgusting & the results look like vomit. They shud stick with Chinese food. I can cook better western food than most of these joints! My advise is avoid places like these unless u have a cast iron stomach or u are walking garbage can.

We first went to the cattle hot pot and noticed there is a sister restaurant called cattle café and we decided to go and try it.
The place is nice, clean and comfy. The waitress is very friendly and helped us to order the same dish with less costs. The price of the food is good and almost all menu items are bundled with a hot drink which is nice. We ordered the pork chop rice, noodles and a sandwiches. We cannot say we are impressed. Almost all the items we tried out are having issues like the pork chop is not tender enough, rice is under cook. Noodles soup didn't have enough soup in the bowl and the food is just OK. My daughter ordered an egg sandwiches and the egg is overcooked and burnt. It doesn't taste and having the fluffy way it suppose to be.
If you are in a hurry, fuel it up and go, this is the place for you. But if you want to have some decent HK style café food, then you may want to go try somewhere else. -

We all ordered noodles of some sort. Noodles is noodles is noodles. There wasn't anything that stood out about this place. It was reasonably priced. Service was not the swiftest as they kept forgetting things, like our drinks.
