Being married to a Québecois, one would think I'd have had the chance to become a connoisseur of poutine. But, not so. The only specimens we'd had on our many travels to the great North were not the kind to write home about - soggy, pasty fries in a salty, acrid, burn-the-back-of-your-throat gravy. I wasn't so thrilled.

But, on our latest visit to the area, I got it in my head that I wanted poutine. Good poutine. I wanted to see what it was really about, and so we asked around, and in visiting friends in Limoilou, were told that *this* was the place to go for the real stuff. We weren't disappointed. The fries were tender, not mealy, and cooked in such a way as to repel the gravy a bit, not become overly saturated. The cheese was soft and all melty-like, and the gravy was savory without being too overpowering.

The restaurant is a little greasy spoon that seats about 20 patrons, if you were to stay for your meal. The menu on the whiteboard consists of hotdogs, pizza, hamburgers, and fries, so you won't be finding sophisticated fare here. But I recommend you do as we did, buy a poutine to go, and eat it on the riverbank down the street. Your arteries might regret it a bit, but your tastebuds certainly won't.
