To Casablanca,
I have only recently become a patron of your facilities, and I honestly do not know what took me so long. Your film selection is so impressive, that I get vertigo just browsing the shelves and trying to decide what to take home with me.
Your Kurosawa selection is unmatched, and your Woody Allen collection assisted me in my 2011 goal to watch every available Woody Allen film, including his attempt at Sci-Fi, Sleeper, which I could only find at Casablanca ever.
Your staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and I know that if I came in not really knowing what I wanted, they would probably be able to dish out some solid recommendations.
I love you very much already, and I hope that you stick around forever. Your business story is amazing, and gives me hope for other independent and emerging businesses in this city. I will choose you over Canadian Netflix (aka. Real Netflix's abandoned orphan little brother) anyday. ANYDAY.
Thank you for being so great.
Love,
Sarah LouiseListed in: a list for book worms,…

This place has a lot of great classic movies and a real mix, especially compared to other video stores which just seem to have movies released in the past 5 years. I always find there is something good to watch but am sometimes a bit surprised when they don't have some of the more obscure films I'm looking for, which even the library has. I'm not always impressed with the staff who range from wonderfully helpful to bored and apathetic. One staff was shockingly inappropriate to my husband and I and when we looked horrified he gave us extra stamps on our card as an apology. I think he should have plain not just said anything but well, at least he is only one of the 10 or so staff.
Certainly worth a visit, especially when video stores are becoming pretty scarce these days. -

Well, goddamn, it's not like me to have to revoke a poor review I delivered last year, but I've yet to encounter a business owner in this city who took responsibility for his employees' poor work ethic the way Jon Lord at Casablanca did.
If you read his rebuttal of my previous review on this page then you understand this is a man of uncharacteristic integrity in a city full of assholes and cheap businessmen. I contacted Jon after his rebuttal and told him something along the lines of, 'let's see if you're as good as your word'.... He was. He found a movie for me on DVD that I didn't even think existed on DVD. And he went about it as a true professional, keeping me updated on his progress in obtaining a copy.
Now, Jon and I share a few 'old-style' philosophies on customer service that we didn't get into during our brief chat the other day, after he located the movie for me. But I think it's worth a word or two here, so tag along...
Long before a venue like Yelp existed, we [the customer] used to take our service complaints to the manager of a particular store under the impression the manager would exercise an inherent common sense, see things our way and accommodate us with some sort of satisfaction. Those days are gone; perhaps a cause of those tumultuous times way back a few years ago, when money mattered little out here and everyone looking for customer service was forced to shut up and take whatever the fools doled out to them. Owners found an easy hiding place in the store rooms, as they counted stock and money....
In this case, Jon stood up openly for his business in this new public forum. The quick way out for him would have been to resort to pretenses -- which is easy on Yelp -- where untold numbers of managers and owners find it more convenient to pretend they're actual reviewers, than take responsibility for poor service.
Jon deserves any and all service awards he's won in the past. All I can offer is the approval of a satisfied customer.... And after all, Casablanca does have a great selection of films and -- as certain recent events would dictate -- they have the tools to locate just about anything you want.....1 Previous Review: Show all »

Casablanca is a pretty interesting movie store. It's not like your regular Blockbuster or Rogers Video in that it doesn't promote new releases and chart busting hits. Casablanca has the gems and classics that movie buffs will love.
They have a wide selection of old movies from the 40's, 50's, 60's, etc. It's really neat to just browse around and take a peak at all the films you missed growing up, since they were out of your era. I never know exactly what to rent since there are so many to choose from.
The staff members here are extremely knowledgeable and seem to have a passion for the unusual. If you have questions about something, or just need a recommendation, they don't hesitate to offer their opinion and lead you in the right direction. It's like they've watched and analyzed all the movies in this place.
Casablanca has a good selection of occult movies as well as the classic... the oldies, but goodies. And yes, you can find the movie Casablanca there, as well. -

Casablanca is my go-to for unusual movies. If you stray from the box office hits, I recommend asking Ben, the goth with longish black hair to recommend a pic. He's never led me astray.
