The family went to this restaurant last Mothers' Day and were happy with the food and service.  Of course, being Mothers' Day the place was crazy busy, but we had a reservation, were seated immediately and had a great view to the marina.  The server did a very good job taking care of us and I have the Coal Harbour Burger, with mushrooms and beacon, which turned to be a better choice than the bunch menu.  Someone else had one of their eggs benedict meals and was envious of my big burger versus their two eggs.

An interesting thing they do is use marine flags to help people that are waiting for their tables know when it become available.  First of all, if you don't have a reservation your name goes on a list with an associated boat flag.  When your table becomes available, they raise your flag for everyone to see, ring the ships bell and that is how you know your table is ready.  I thought this was cool versus using the hand-held units that vibrate and light-up when your table is ready.

My review is directed at the lounge area. Food is always above average, prices are not great...but not bad for what you get and the location. The staff is always very welcoming with a positive vibe. That alone would warrant 3 1/2 stars.

However what takes it to the next level and separates itself from the pack is the quality of live music offered by a solo act. Not too loud so you can still chat with your guest. I particular love Jim Foster who plays Monday to Wednesday nights. The only problem is that I always stay there far too long on school nights.

Definitely a great place to mingle after work or weekends, nice view. For this, I cut the food standard a little loose, they're not bad! I had their burger, not my favorite but trust me, you will be 130% full. Huge plate.

The only annoying thing is the line up. They have this different country flag going on to indicate when it's your seating turn but I find it's just messy. In the end, I found my own table because they didn't figure out how to maximize their space.

The food is great but the noise level is way too intense. Restaurants tend to be loud, but this place is just too over the top. Love the view of Coal Harbour though.

A popular restaurant along the seawall in Coal Harbour with a beautiful view overlooking the water with young professionals and the afterwork business crews.

A bunch of us came for some TGIF drinks, chilled and watched as the placed filled up for  Friday night. Accompanying my drinks, the spinach salad with pecans, dried raisins, goat cheese and beets I had was delicious. The managers and servers were friendly and the restaurant seemed very well-managed. The only improvement I`d suggest is to set the vibe with good music, which tonight, it was inconsistently on/off.

    What's more:
    - Surprisingly, very reasonably priced (unlike what I remember when I here 5+ years ago)
    - Bar area is great for mingling
    - Restaurant area is perfect for a date and is family friendly
    - Similar to: Sandbar on Granville Island (sister restaurant)

When I travel alone, I tend to sit at the bar.  I do this for lots of reasons, but one of the benefits is that I typically get to peer into part of the food-preparation world.  Typically, if you sit at the bar, what you are looking at is... the bar.  At Cardero's, when you sit at the bar by the kitchen, you see everything.  What makes for a lot of entertainment makes for slightly awkward service (they are peering over you to take your order), but it is worth it.

A Mario Batali-like chef was directing everyone using humor and multiple languages with his busy kitchen team.  This is a really efficient group.  To have an exposed kitchen is a dangerous and brave thing; this group was clean, did not have any extra movements and got dishes out that appeared well-executed. They were amazing and exhausting to watch.

To start, I ordered the spinach salad with goat cheese, beets and a peppery flavor was good, if not good intense in some bites.  Next, I thought about ordering the mussels, but ordered the linguine (with seafood).  Linguine was exactly what I wanted to eat.  It had a nice buttery sauce and the linguine was cooked perfectly.  Their wine pours are also long, which is really nice.

I have come to Cardero's often because of its close proximity to the Westin and it has always been a good decision.

    Best dining experience ever!!
A friend & I traveled to Vancouver for the weekend for a conference.  This restaurant was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel.
Let me start out by saying that my friend & I had happy hour before leaving the hotel lobby, so we were already in a great mood!  When we arrived, we were greeted and seated immediately (we had reservations made by the hotel).  Our waiter, Pete, came to us & asked us for our drink order & brought it out promptly.
I didn't know what to order, so Pete told me his favorite item....I was not disappointed!!

Cardero's in Coal Harbour is located on 1583 Coal Harbour Quay, Vancouver, BC. It is brought to you by the Sequoia Company of Restaurants  - home to The Teahouse in Stanley Park (mmm yummy brunch), Seasons in the Park in Queen Elizabeth Park (mmm lovely romantic ambiance), The Sandbar on Granville Island (mmm such delicious sable fish).

The problem with not working downtown is I miss out on a lot of Happy Hour gatherings; namely because I can not make in on time before it ends at 6pm. But when I do, it is always special. Why was this occasion so special? No reason really. TGIF? Nope! It was just a much needed after a long day and I required some mid-week TLC from some honey lager and mussels. Loaded with cilantro and green onions. Curry cream base.

Cardero's has been around for a very long time. It existed during our UBC days early Y2K and it still excites me when i arrive. I love the wood exterior and the gorgeous view of Coal Harbour. I remember one time we came for a friend's birthday or something and someone's boat lit fireworks! Happy Whatever day!

It's hard to sum up the merits of this place, mainly because so much depends on the mood you're in when you come in. Long story short, if you're looking to have a fun, relaxed meal with friends in a lively setting, this place easily warrants four stars. If you're looking to be very exacting about culinary preparation and want to make sure you're squeezing every penny of value out of what you buy, this place is closer to three stars. We were after the former, so four stars aren't hard to offer.

This place sits on a pier along the waterfront, flanked by some very impressive yachts. And some very tastefully understated yacht-for-sale signs. Stupid economy. The staff is bubbly and efficient from the first face you see. The whole place really bustles, booked solid for hours on the weekends, days in advance. The bar is a comfortable place to wait. When your table is ready, they ring a big nautical bell and run "your" flag up a rope.

That's both the charm of the place, and the problem with it--the working to death of the nautical theme. There are pretty wooden toy boats everywhere, and lots of little decorative touches that suggest you're maybe shipping off in the merchant marine or something. The staff don't wear nautical clothing, thankfully, so it feels like a regular restaurant if you squint a little. The bar has TVs, there are sports autographs on the wall. It's a well-done mainstream effort.

The beer list is solid, plenty of local craft options. Same goes for the wine--nice BC presence on the list. We had a Mission Hill Shiraz, which seemed like a bit of a fruit bomb at $53, but was certainly pleasant. The liquor and spirits lists are merely functional, though not really limited. They get the job done.

As far as the kitchen, they're not pressing too hard to stretch your boundaries; they want broad appeal. But they clearly stock fresh ingredients of high quality. We had Fanny Bay oysters to start, which were great, and a hummus plate with good pita. For dinner, the arctic char special was nicely flavored and well prepared, and both the ling cod and the steamed shrimp dumplings got positive reviews. With the char, the vegetables (parsnip, broccolini, roasted red pepper) were a bit on the oily side, though the flavors were good and the cook time was close to the mark. Desserts around the table included the pecan tart and the warm brownie, both getting high marks.

In the end, it depends on who you're with when you come here. If you want to relax, have fun, and eat decent food, this place will treat you right. If you really want to explore the culinary offerings of the city, you're probably better off elsewhere. If you're feeling festive and don't mind lots of chatter and bells ringing, this could be the place for you.

The food here is above average, had the three course lunch $18 CAD special for restaurant week.  The starters, had the tomato based clam chowder, it was not bad, had good amount of clams with a healthy dose of veggies.  For main course, had the salmon and it was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of seasoning.  For the dessert, had the tiramisu and had a good strong coffee flavor, not too sweet.

I was here during a mining convention, so it was packed!  The view was awesome, too bad it was raining.  So if you are going here for a good casual meal with a great view, this is the place for you!

Would return anytime.  The fireplace is also pretty cozy if you go with a date.

I came here for lunch and dinner while visiting Vancouver and enjoyed both visits very much. Cardero's has it all--a great harbor view, great food, nautical ambience, and competent, friendly servers. The menu is extensive and international, with an emphasis on seafood. Seared ahi, local oysters, and prawns were all excellent. The lunch scene is fairly quiet, in contrast to the more noisy, festive bar scene at night. Highly recommended!

The food were uh-ma-zing!! We went for a family lunch on a Sunday and this place has got a great atmosphere, casual and comfortable yet classy. Service was above average but not the greatest.

Nonetheless, the food deserve 5 stars! We tried all the three different menu options for Dine Out - Grilled salmon with risotto, glazed chicken and the short beef ribs. They each had a really rich flavour to them which I like since most other places have really mild, subtle flavour.

Ambience was great, open space with a dockside and marine-like feel and decor. Will def return when the occasion calls!

As part of a trip to Stanley park, we ventured to Cardero's for some drinks and appetizers.  It obviously has a wonderful location and it is very scenic.

We went into the bar and ordered drinks.  The drinks were delicious and very strong.  Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt.  We also ordered the Wok Squid and Wok Chicken.  Both were very tasty although we preferred the Wok Squid.  The chillies give it a nice little kick as a finish.  We also got some oysters which were very clean and fresh - and the first time I liked them! I really enjoyed their cocktail sauce as well.

All in all, it was a great experience.  I can't speak to the restaurant or their full menu, but it was delicious and was exactly what we were looking for.

This restaurant was recommended to us by the hotel staff. Located on the water, it has a great view, I recommend taking a walk down the waterfront, beautiful boats, sea planes, buildings, and shops! Cardero's of course had a very nautical theme, it provided a welcomed warm environment for weary travelers. The food was great, we all left full and praising all of it! Staff was very nice.

We wanted a quick bite to eat on our first day in Vancouver. The hotel where we stayed - the loden hotel (which is a fantastic boutique hotel btw) suggested this restaurant.

It was boxing day and they were quite busy during peak lunch time. We didn't have any reservations, however the host managed to seat us within a few minutes.

Decor is great - casual and comfortable. The service was very attentive.  I ordered the manhattan clam chowder and the pan fried fanny bay oysters. Both were succulent.

    Overall a great experience!

Cardero's is a solid 3. They've got a great space, in a great location. For sure it's fantastic, but the food and service are average. I had the fish tacos, which were good but not as good as those you can get at Chronic Tacos. Also had the spinach salad, which was good, but not as good as a similar salad at Branas, Oysters were okay, but nowhere near as good as Rodney's. The warm bread was a nice touch though.

With a space like this, I expect to be floored by the experience (similar to the problems I had with Seasons on the Park). This is my third or fourth stop at Carderos and although there wasn't anything wrong with any of the visits, I always left feeling like there was a place better for the meal/drinks/appies I had. Same goes for the service, it wasn't bad, but I've definitely had better.

Carderos sits solidly in the middle of the pack for anything you want. Which is fine if you strive for mediocrity. That said, it definitely is a great space.

Menu was very interesting and the quality stood up to the claims

    Perfect vibe

The owner of this restaurant NAILED it! I'm a foodie with veteran experience and everything was perfect. You never had to wait for someone to clears your plates, pour you more wine or replace your silverware. Very attentive staff and very reasonable prices (including wine). The view isn't terrible either. The thing I liked most about Cardero's was the five star service and food without the attitude.

Would love to see the owner open a restaurant in Seattle - it would far surpass most "great" restaurants here!

Try the spinach salad & the ribs.

I wish 2.5 stars were an option . . . No better than last time

Four of us came for brunch. Arrived at 11:30 - only three other tables were busy and still the service was barely passable. How hard is it for the many servers to remove our empty soup bowls BEFORE bringing our mains? We sat with the empty bowls for a while before the food arrived, but nobody thought to clear them to make room for our main dishes until the awkward moment when our plates arrived and they had to juggle the dirty dishes off the table in order to make room. Again, for the price, Cardero's service is just not appropriate.

Now their feature desert, a lemon ice pie was delicious. Again, great food, disappointing service.

Crazy busy on a Saturday night in the summer with people clamoring at the door to get a table in this over-the-water joint in Coal Harbour. We had a bit of a "seating issue" with our reservation and where they were sticking us, but it was quickly resolved.

Coconut curry mussels as an appetizer were delicious ... but they had to bring a second order because the first had at least six unopened mussels. The second batch still had three. That's what I get for ordering shellfish in a month without an 'r' though. They handled the situation very well, I will say. I just think the kitchen needs to inspect mussels a bit before they are plated.

    Oyster burger ... very good.

Clint was our server. Very handsome, personable, and fun guy ... not pushy, not fake.

Overall, one of our stand-bys in Coal Harbour.

I love the Cardero's deck. A few years back a friend and I had a really great Fall lunch there. The heated patio, the misty water, and the Fall colour across the marina in Stanley Park really made it a great day.

The other night I went back for supper with two friends. It was a cool Spring evening and the deck was much busier. Incidentally though we had the same server and the service was great.

The difference this time around however was the ambience. A Spring evening is prime deck time for Vancouver-ites and the Cardero's deck was packed. I think that detracted slightly from the experience.

The food is good and the prices are more reasonable than a seafood place like Coast. Incidentally, the service is less pretentious than Coast too. :)

If you're going to Cardero's, go on a quieter night and ask to be seated on their deck. It's worth it!

We were staying right down the street at the Westin Bayshore so it was close and the menu sounded yummy so I called the pub for a pick up order of a burger w/salad, pizza with chicken and calamari. However, sadly i was Not impressed-

Upon arrival the host was busying himself and so after i stood around for awhile i wandered off to the bar where friendly staff greeted me. My order had just came up and i paid and left.

The food for the price was nothing special. The burger had wilted black lettuce on it. Beyond that it was very forgettable. The pizza was undercooked and i could of got a frozen pizza and it wouldn't of been much different. The squid was over cooked and nasty in general.
My boyfriend however said other then the fact it was over cooked he would of liked it - but he likes garlic and chili's where i do not.

We went here because our hotel is only a block away and we wanted a good view. The view is so so - the deck faces the side and the view is mostly of the open space to the side not the water.

We shared the mussels in curry sauce, deep fried oysters, fish tacos and linguine vongole.   Mussels were very small considering Vancouver is a seafood capital.  The sauce was ok. Oysters were again very small and the breading was just so so.  The fish tacos had good halibut in them. But the salsa is not what I'd call salsa.  My wife's linguine vongole had these micro sized clams in it. Come on. For $17 lunch entree, you can serve up some decent clams!  The pasta was ok - a bit past al dente.

Best part of the lunch was the Canadian draft beer I had.

    Service was good.

Fantastic location with beautiful views. We were here in July 2010 and had dinner on the patio. We were seated right by a fireplace so the chilly evening didn't matter. It was a Monday so there was a business crowd here for happy hour/dinner.

Next time I come to Vancouver I'd probably come here for some drinks on the patio, but want to see what else Vancouver has to offer for food.

Not Bad.  Went there with a large group of guys to start a night out a month or so ago.  I really cannot say any of the food other than maybe the french fries stood out as special.  Wok Squid was not as good as I remembered it from years gone by; but perhaps I am just expecting more.  Definitely a great place to go with a large group and were very accommodating to reservations and splitting of bills.  I would likely go again with a large group.

I visited Cardero's last night for a dinner with work colleagues and was impressed by the location and view, but not too much else.

The ambiance in the evening was nice, bustling with a busy bar and nice low lighting. I can see from Cyndi's previous review that this might fall flat in the day time when it's a little quieter.

The service was nice, the prices were a little pricey and the food was OK.

Nice fresh seafood but not a lot of flavors going on in general. I had the wok seafood and there was a nice selection of salmon, scallops, shrimp and fish, but the sauce was a fairly nondescript, glutinous mess. I couldn't single out any particular flavors.

The flat bread we had to start was tasty and everything else was inoffensive, but certainly wasn't memorable.

I think that Cardero's is a good place to maybe take a client for a standard work meal/meeting. Fancy (read: pricey) enough to be impressive and conservative (read: boring) enough to be safe.

If you're investing your own money and not hitting the company plastic, invest your hard earned dollars somewhere else that has more personality, flavor and passion.

Cardero's is ok, but just ok.  The food is overpriced -- why is a burger and salad $15 when it's $11 everywhere else?  Why is a sleeve of Granville Island $6 when it's $5.25 anywhere else?  I suppose there's a nice view of Burrard Inlet...  but only if you're next to the window (and most of the tables aren't).  There was live music...  but nothing better than the acoustic guitar cover rock that you would expect at a less expensive place in a different neighbourhood.  Also, I found it a little too loud and a little too dark for quality conversation.

That being said, the food is all right, and the service is decent. In my opinion, though, it's not worth the price.

You couldn't ask for a better location in the city-surrounded by hotels, the waterfront, and close to Stanley Park. A very modern exterior nestled amongst the 60+ ft yachts in Coal Harbour. Situated right beside the Westin  Bayshore Hotel. There is meter parking all around, but an underground parking complex is just 1 minute away across the street at the end of Nichola St.

The interior is very open, almost cafeteria like. So quite accommodating for large groups. I liked the concept. It was a Saturday night at aprox 6pm on a cool February night. It started out 1/2 full then it quickly filled up by 7pm.
I had the Wok Squid for an appy which was crisp and spicy.
I wasn't looking looking for a filling meal so I then ordered the oyster burger. Very flavorful. Over all though, I have had better and the food a little overpriced. but still enjoyed the whole experience.
All in all, I great place for a group of friends.
If I could give a 3 1/2 that's what my ideal rating would be.

Looking for a spot with a nice view of Coal Harbour, and fresh oysters, we settled on Cardero's. It was a Friday afternoon at about 3:30pm. We managed to score a table on the patio, overlooking the harbour.

The view went well with fresh Fanny Bay oysters from Vancouver Island and a bottle of Pinot Gris. The staff was friendly, attentive, and conversational -- but they also gave us our space.

That we stayed until midnight that night is pretty telling of the great view, the great service and the delicious food (we also sampled the seared albacore tuna as the night went on).

Cardero's is a great spot for food, drink and views. The staff is exceptional and the prices are in line with the quality of food and service. If you're staying in downtown Van, or even if you're a long-time resident, Cardero's is a great spot.

    I got punked!

Ok, so Cardero's, right? You've seen it, nestled cooly in Coal Harbour, with it's sweet crisp logo that looks like it's from a spa. Well, I walk in anticipating white tablecloths, or at the very least, some kind of funky-modern decor and my senses are shocked. My first thought is, "What is this--a school for ants?" Just kidding. My first thought was ''Am I missing something here?'' For those of you who haven't been, be warned (and maybe you'll have a good experience) Cardero's feels a bit like a cafeteria. A cafeteria on a waterfront mind you, but a cafeteria just the same. The whole interior ambiance just isn't congruent with the promising exterior. Cardero's is leaning a bit too much on its location. The food, well it's ok, but I could pay the same at a nicer place.

Pack yourself some sammies to go and have a picnic on the beach. It'll be nicer.

One of my dislikes is things that are "fine" and this place is "fine". It's nothing special and nothing terrible. The food is "fine", the service is "fine", everything is just "fine".
So if your looking for somewhere "adequate" to go then this is really up your alley. But if you want a memorable experience, good or bad for that matter, then this is not the place for you.

Oh, you won me over. The squid is just so divine, and pints of Granville Island winter ale seated next to the fire is often just the right prescription for the day.

A day in Stanley Park capped off at Cardero's is a new tradition!

Clearly, this place gets automatic bonus points for location, location, location. It is amazing to look out the window and see spectacular views Stanley Park and the mountains, and I can only imagine it gets so much better in the summer.

The food is also decent. My friend and I shared ahi tuna salad and the spinach salad so we could both have some variety, and both were excellent. The ahi tuna salad wasn't overly huge because it didn't come with greens (just tomatoes, basil and cheese) but they do give you a nice portion of albacore tuna, which was delicious. The spinach salad was much larger and came with goats cheese, walnuts, craisins and a light citrus vinaigrette, all of which nicely complemented the spinach.

Our server was good and sorted out some bill complications at our table without a problem. Absolutely a good place to cap off a day in Stanley Park, especially in the summer.

    Sunday prime rib= AMAZING.
I had been to Cardero's a few times and sat in the bar area. It was my last weekend in vancouver before moving back to the states so I decided to go all out and finally eat in the dining area.  Views are amazing and the staff is always friendly.  For my last visit we came on Sunday for the prime rib $25 special.  Such a great deal and it's a good sized portion.  It's served with asparagus and mashed potatoes.  I was surprised at the cost because everything is expensive in Vancouver.  So $25 for all that I was happy and satisfied.  I also love the mussels here.  There is a good happy deal during the week: mussels and beer for $10.
I would definitely recommend coming here if you're in the area.
Also, the bar area is much more interesting to sit in.  Better views and ambiance.

Pretentious resto, AMAZING patio view PLUS a cozy pub?  Yes please!
It's everything you want out of Vancouver, no wonder tourists love it.

Alhough I'm born and raised here I don't go to Cardero because well, it's a pricier version of the kind of Vancouver you want to expereince when you don't  know Vancouver very well.
    Know what I mean?

Yeah, people come here because it's a great allround resto+pub+view.  But can you get the same elsewhere?  of course!  But you'd have to know the city as well as I do ; )

    The restaurant:
Excellent service, friendly for yuppies and families alike.
Food.  Good, not VERY good but you don't feel ripped off when you pay the bill.

    Pub:
Nice narrow room beside the resto.  Has a good combination of cozy and social.  Good drinks, but there aren't a lot of perks to this bar.  Meaning there is no use being ultra friendly in hopes of a special mixed drink or any extras.
But if you want egalitarian?  You got it.

Nice place overall.  Go call it a favourite if you're a tourist.  If you're a local?  Go once just to see what its all about but you probably know better places to take yourself.

I agree with most of the other 3 star reviews. The location is awesome if you can get a table outside. It has pretty good views of the Park and the mountains. But there is nothing else much to say really, food is average and it serves bulk standard drinks.
