finding a hairdresser is like finding a good pair of jeans, it takes several tries to find the right fit but once you've found the pair, you've never looked better. okay, i need help with my analogies but bear with me. the mixed reviews seems to be very dependent on the range of stylists. some stylists have their specialities while others are able to "tackle" all sorts of hair from sleek to frizz, asian to african, male to female. as for my experience, amy is lovely, she is  somehow able to tame my not so tame-able waves into something i can maintain on my own avoiding my pet peeve (hair looks fabulous post salon but would take me hours to "re-create" on my own). she also fixed my sister's hair after having a semi unpleasant experience with another stylist. i find a good stylist will ask you how you want your hair styled post hair cut (the newbies style it the way they want because they don't have the breadth of experience to give you choice..or at least that's my perception).

you wear your hair everyday, invest in a good haircut. my 0.02.

It was recommended to me by a friend, so I decided to check it out. I've been there twice for a cut with two different stylists.  Verdict: They do not do Asian hair well, specifically bangs. First time, the stylist - great in every other way - just stepped back and said, "hmmm" and "ugh, I'm not sure" when it came time to do my bangs - what I ended up were way thicker and longer bangs than I had asked for that hung heavily in my face after the styling products were washed out (had written on the questionnaire that I don't use any). Decided to go back and have the bangs redone. Big mistake. Got this stylist that kept asking me while cutting my bangs, "Like this?" I'm not a hairstylist. I know what I want my hair to look like, but I don't know how to cut it to get it there...Anyway, ended up with super short, thick bangs that could only be pinned back to avoid looking like Suzy Sunshine.

Hive on the other hand is great for cutting Asian hair, Especially bangs - just watch out for the stylist that likes the frizzy, super-layered Jon Bon Jovi look in the back.

I am a regular at this salon.  The stylists are very nice and I can't say that I've ever had a terrible haircut here.  The hair cuts turn out pretty nice.

You get a haircut card where they stamp it every time you get a cut.  After 10 cuts, you get one free.

As for the tip, prepare to bring cash as there is no add-on option when using a card.

I came for the cut-a-thon because I needed a good hair cut I could afford. And I'm happy that it went to a good cause.  How many other salons donate their stylists' time to raise money for the Vancouver food bank?

My stylist, Andrea, was awesome.  I got along with her will and she listened to how I wanted my hair cut.  One of the things I find is that it's hard for me to connect to my past stylists.  Not that they're awful people by any means, but you know that chatty relationship (that I envision) most people have with their stylists where they talk about all sorts of gossip and personal stuff?  I've never had that with any stylist in recent years. But Andrea was awesome--I clicked with her. She's very friendly and talks openly.

To respond to someone's past review--they don't have stylists that rent the chairs. All stylists there work for Caramel.

They also have pretty good products from Bumble and Bumble and Davines.

    ummm...NO
I hate giving a review based on ONE experience that made me SHRIEK but poo- i'm doin it.

(This stylist probably just rents the chair- so I'm gonna try not to HATE on the entire place BUT)...

    1) They do the "standard" questionnaire, i.e. "What kind of product do you use.. what is your styling routine..."
    2) I made it VERY clear that my product use is NONE and my styling routine is "I don't even own a comb"
I made it VERY clear that i needs something LOW maintenance and I don't want them to fuss- just something EASY
    3) When I meet the guy stylist he asks me what I want and I say, "pretty" and he replies, "uhh..well i dunno..."
    -seriously..even as a joke that's not cool.
    4) he proceeded to do a terrible cut, AND THEN put a shitload of product to grease it up, and THEN USE A STRAIGHTENER on me.

ok seriously, I have freaking STRAIGHT hair- it seriously doesn't do anything else- won't even hold a wave- and he pulls out the STRAIGHTENER?  yeah..no.

    -rude
    -doesn't know he was doing
    -doesn't listen

Apparently you've got to get the right stylist here -- and I really did not.  Based on the good things I'd heard about Caramel I booked an appointment; after moving back to Vancouver I'd tried a number of salons recommended by friends and had either spent $100+ for a good cut or $60-75 for a bad one, so I was still in the market for a replacement for fabulous Vain in Seattle.

I called, told them I needed someone good with fine, short hair who could fix a bad cut (Jamie at J'aime les cheveux had started cutting bangs even after I explicitly said I didn't want them and then it was too late...bleh).  Caramel set me up with Lucy, but didn't mention that she's apparently a junior stylist (I would have vetoed a junior stylist had I known).

Now don't get me wrong, Lucy is very nice.  And she seems to be right out of beauty school, so I'm sure she's still learning and with coaching she will become a confident, competent stylist.  But when you say you need a stylist to fix a bad haircut, the salon probably shouldn't set up you up with a newbie who spent 15-20 seconds weighing each cut of the scissors.  My cut took 90 minutes; it was the longest cut I've ever had.  At the end, she didn't even bother to style it, just left it where it had dried and sprayed a little product on it.  I had to go home to wash and style my hair before going out to dinner.

The redeeming factor was that since she was a junior stylist, and it was my first time in the salon, I got the cut for half price -- like $20 or something.  That was about what it was worth.  I fled to Seattle to have my hair recut at Vain the next weekend because I was sick of trying new people.  My Vancouver stylist search continues...

Despite the plethora of salons, estheticians, beauty parlors, etc in Vancouver, Caramel still manages to stand out. Located on South Granville, the convenient location is ideal should your fringe need a quick fix in between shopping jaunts or when scavenging the neighbouring art galleries.

I've only been there twice but both times, the stylists listened closely to what I wanted done and were careful to make suggestions when needed.  While hip to current trends, they won't reproach you when all that is needed is a simple wash-and-wear style.

The salon is clean and sparsely decorated with hardwood floors and light flooding through the front windows, creating a very warm and welcoming effect. Tea and (very strong) coffee are on hand to complete what was overall, a very pleasant experience.

Caramel currently stocks Bumble&Bumble, Daviness, Pureology and Statik, their in-house brand.

Personally, I have had my hair cut here numerous times by two different stylists and I've always been extremely satisfied with the results. The stylists, in my experience, have been willing to listen and respect my wishes while also providing helpful suggestions. As another reviewer mentioned, they do seem to take a while to finish the job, but it's worth the 60-90 mins in the end.

If I remember correctly, they charge around $40 for a cut by a master stylist.

I believe they give you a 50% discount on your first visit to the salon...check out their website for more details!

Not a good experience with the treatment, but good experience with the stylist. I had a Coppola Keratin Complex Smoothing treatment which is a chemical free way of smoothing and straightening curly hair for 3 to 6 months. I have very, very curly red hair and thought it would be nice to try it out for a change. I did my consultation with Randall who was very knowledgeable and had great energy. I then went home and did my due diligence to check into the treatment on the internet and ask around as to what I could expect. It all sounded like I should expect some good results so I braced myself for the $400 bill and the Saturday afternoon it would take to complete, and made my appointment.
This service takes a long time and a lot of work. My hair is medium length and THICK so it took the better part of 4 hours. It also hurts after awhile from all the constant tugging and pulling on your head. When I was done though, my hair was beautiful and straight and silky. I was enthused.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it just didn't take to my hair. Two weeks later I had exactly the same head of hair that had previously belonged to me and I was gutted about how much money I had spent for nothing.
I called the salon and left a message about my experience and they got back to me immediately. They took one look at it and agreed that I did not have a good result and gave me a refund of the service cost. They really were more worried about me being happy overall. I am very happy with the professionalism and respect they showed me in the rather fraught experience of having to lodge a complaint. Hopefully, someday, there will be a chemical miracle to give me Julianne Moore's hair, but in the meantime I'm sure I will still see Russell, as the man knows what to do with a pair of scissors.

Caramel has a really good reputation and seems to win "best of Vancouver" awards, but I didn't have a great experience here.  When I first moved to Vancouver, I went to Caramel twice and saw two different stylists, and wasn't very happy either time - oh my poor bangs.  I'm guessing that there must be some very good stylists here, or they wouldn't get so much attention, but I'd be wary.  If you go here, I'd suggest that you get a personal recommendation of which stylists are the best and which are not.

OK. I have to explain my three stars here, because I'm combining my experience with my boyfriend's experience here. I had a fabulous experience at Caramel and will continue going there. I went to Ayma, who listened to what I wanted and gave me an edgy yet easy to style cut, something difficult to achieve with my waves, and which I had been dying to have after too many awesome but high maintenance haircuts from other stylists. My boyfriend, confident after seeing my hair cut, went and had an AWFUL experience. He told the guy (a junior stylist, I believe) that he wanted a DeeDee Ramone esque haircut, but the stylist had no idea who the Ramones were. First of all, that's a bit frightening. Regardless, Stefan showed him pictures of what he wanted, which were definitely of shoulder length hair. Not only did this guy cut all of my boyfriend's long, luxurious locks off, he BUTCHERED it. No blending, nothing, it looked like he had literally hacked into his hair. I actually had to try to blend it myself when he came home. He did not listen to what my boyfriend wanted at all and just did what he wanted, which was some hacked version of a hipster haircut, very NOT what he wanted. So, Ayma - five stars. Whoever this dude was who cut my boyfriend's hair - zero stars, if it were possible.
