Another great find! Just off the beaten path and a nice neighborhood place to grab a beer or cocktail. Haven't tried the food yet but seems to have a following.
Great outside patio (Hurry up Spring!) Think this and The Lookout will be the neighborhood nice-weather outside beer spots for me.
OPutside seating, nice staff, good bar, cool crowd... I like! -

Atmosphere- the deck? One of the best on the hill. On sunny days there's no better spot.
Service- no table service, but the bartenders are super friendly.
Drinks- strong and well priced.
Food- OK, so my last time here I was in heaven, sunning on the patio with a decently made gimlet, so my buddies and I ordered some fried okra, chicken and waffles, and a shrimp poboy. The okra was good, nothing special, but tasty as a snack. The waffle was insanely bland. The chicken was actually good. But the poboy? Horrible. The shrimp was overcooked, the bread was stale, the dressing was overly sweet.
I would never eat here again, but I'll gladly drink on their patio. -

Would give 3.5 if I could.
I came over to grab some chicken and waffles to go and it felt like I was walking into a spring break hangout in Cabo....like a meat market.
The chicken was perfectly battered and fried but could have used a more seasoning. I really appreciated the butchering of the chicken pieces so that it was easy to eat. The waffle was on the denser side...not particularly special but it didn't disintegrate in maple syrup, of which far too little was given.
Value-wise, I thought I would get a wee bit more. -

Oh man - I looked at the menu online before buying the StrangerMart certificate. I wouldn't have purchased it had I known the menu online was not current. We went in hoping to get field roast sandwiches to find they are no longer on the menu. Oh well. Kind of a bummer really.
I know, I know, it's a stupid move as a vegetarian to go somewhere like this. We ordered the fried okra, hushpuppies, and a smoked mushroom sandwich. Also two beers. Holy crap, it was expensive for the quality of the food.
I eat pretty healthy, but I do go to Honeyhole and Highline for some good sandwiches. However, I felt so fucking disgusting after eating here, I never ever ever want to eat here again. It was just an overload of fried everything and grease to the max. Duh, right. I should have known better!
It was really smelly when we walked in too. I wanted to leave, but we had to use up the certificate. We were too broke not too. It smelled a lot like piss and poo and ammonia. It's possible that we just walked in at a bad time. Like after someone pissed and poo'ed and used some ammonia.
Was intrigued by the back deck, but I really can't stomach even thinking about stepping foot in here again.
Probably good for beer and maybe drunk food. Make sure you're already drunk when you go in. If you're vegetarian, don't bother with getting any food. -

LOVE the deck. Perfect on a Seattle summer day. I had their cheeseburger and it was DELCIOUS, I must say. That is about the only think I eat on the menu though lol. This place is tough to find I will admit. They seemed to have a good happy hour too. WARNING: Watch out for captiol hill hipsters :P

No table service -- you have to get your own forks, napkins, water, and go to the bartender and wait in line to order. I don't mind doing this at a fast food joint, but when I'm paying $12 for a meal, and sitting at a table made of wood, I think it calls for having a server.
Their sandwich offerings consist of a pulled pork sandwich, a burger, and two po' boy options: mushroom and shrimp. ??? Does this seem strange to anyone else? No chicken? No oysters? No catfish? No etc? I asked if they had a fried chicken po' boy and was told they took that sandwich off of their menu recently. ??? I asked if it might be possible to sub fried chicken for the mushrooms or shrimp and received a one word response: "No".
Only one of the two dishes we ordered came out. The food runner immediately returned to the kitchen before we could ask where the other dish was. Went up to the bartender and asked about the other dish I ordered and was told the second dish (a pulled pork sandwich and fries) might take a few minutes longer to come out than the first (fried chicken and waffle). Not sure why that would be. Fifteen minutes later my lady friend's meal comes out. I think he forgot to put it in the system but just didn't cop to it when asked. There were tots instead of fries, too.
The chicken and waffle was pretty good but it was $12 and there was not that much there, just one good sized piece of fried chicken and a waffle. I'd pay $7 for it on Tuesday, though. -

Everybody should know by now that this is the spot to be on a sunny day. Conan fucked it up with his answer to the question, "what is best in life". While I'm a fan of crushing my enemies/seeing said enemies driven before me/listening to the women lament I'm probably more of a fan of crushing an order of cheese curds with my teef, driving ungodly amounts of fairly priced booze into my expanding gullet and listening to beautiful Seattle women I'll never have a chance with talk about the newest electro thrash grunge pop collective. Also sun. It's still weird to me that there's such a paucity of places with rad decks in this city but as long as there's a shortage Captain Black's is the deck to be at.

Five stars all the way.
Fried food, good vibe, funky music. This is my kind of place.
Decided to go last night (Tuesday) with a few friends. Happy hour from 10-12 was on point. Got a good selection of drinks and we ended up getting a second round of food. Make sure to go on Tuesdays cause they got live DJs and last night he was playing some funky breaks and hip-hop. Perfect. Chicken and waffles was bomb, fried okra was better than Ezell's (seriously), and the Fried Mac&Cheese blew my mind.
Go here. Do it. Do it now. -

The venue is pretty cute and there is outside seating. I had a po' boy and I don't think I'd recommend getting that particular item because it was small for what you pay for and it wasn't all that spectacular. I'd definitely go back to try their other food items though.

Don't let it's subtle outside fool you. Inside the food is delicious! I had what was probably one of the best burgers I've ever had and I have had many. The atmosphere was nice and if you go there on a nice day go out on the patio and enjoy a nice view while you eat. Great place I'd reccomend to anyone who eats food in the Capitol hill area.

I wanted chicken and waffles... no, that's not true, I was CRAVING chicken + waffles. And the chances that I was going to be at Roscoe's any time soon? Well, they were slim so a dear friend and I came here to get our comfort food on.
It's not a large place by any means, there is a small inside bar with an outside and rooftop decks. And ordering food is simple, head to the bar to start a tab or pay all at once, snag a table if there are any and your food will arrive shortly afterward. If they are busy, you might want to send a scouting party to secure that table while waiting to place your order.
During our visit, the weather was pleasant enough so we snagged a spot on the back deck with a lovely vantage point to people watch below. Our food arrived quickly: fried pickles with a spicy aioli and an order of fried okra. I enjoyed my chicken and waffle though I had to ask twice for butter that never arrived. My friend enjoyed her pickles and her Po'boy. I wished the okra wasn't frozen but it wasn't greasy.
Parking can be tricky. It's the Hill, it's just the facts of life. Bathrooms were clean and the bartender was nice. -

After visiting captain blacks last night I need to update this review.
A challenging situation occurred....but the employees stepped up.
The bartendress and the other employee where so outstandingly friendly and caring! They where truly empathetic and went far beyond the call of duty to help us out.
Excellent service is few and far between on the hill and employees such as those two make their establishment one of the best on the hill.
Everyone should stop in and partake in the great atmosphere and great specialty drinks.
I feel this business deserves 10+ stars but, sigh, I don't have that option.
Thank you Captain Blacks staff for being amazing!Listed in: Summit area...

Possibly the worst bar on Capital Hill: it stank of sewage the few times I've been, the drink selection is minimal, there's no seating unless the weather is nice and the decks are open, and why did they replace the old menu? That was good bar food, this new one is just sad. The only reason this dive gets a second star is that the both of the bartenders I've dealt with there were pretty cool.

Captain Blacks is one of my favorite bars.
I love the front and the back decks. I love the city view. I love the food offerings - po boys and fried okra! I love the HH. I love the mojitos. I love the friendly bartenders.
The only thing I don't love is the inconsistency in quality of drinks, but it seems only 1/10 is weak, so probability is on your side.Listed in: I love Capitol Hill, Yes! Yes! Yes!

Getting drunk in a nautical themed cottage is fun.
Getting drunk in a nautical themed cottage while eating $.50 cent wings? That's a hell of a way to spend a Saturday night.

I like going to bars. I like to sit at the bar, have some whiskey and a cold beer, maybe some food that is good. I like to have stimulus around me that I can enjoy looking at or watching. I like it when the bartender is pleasant and easy to get along with. I don't mind when, weather permitting, there is the option of sitting outside, maybe even enjoying a smoke. I like when there is good music playing and not too loud. I do not like having to shout over music to be heard. You could get me to do stuff, weird stuff, if you put some fried okra in front of me to enjoy. I like a good pour and reasonable prices. I like bar stools that do not wobble. I like easy navigation to the bathroom.
Every damn thing I like about going to a bar can be found at Captain Blacks, which is why, more often than not, you can find me there.Listed in: Swish Alps

Wow... I felt like I needed a hipster membership card to get in here.
The space is tiny and cute, the two porches definitely seemed to be where the vast majority of hipsters were congregating, leaving enough tables for my friends and I to sit. I can see why ordering at the bar is necessary, there just isn't enough room for table service.
While the chicken and waffles were very tasty, I couldn't work out the math for pricing in my head. One waffles- maybe a buck for mix, syrup, and butter. One chicken breast... maybe$3 if you get it from QFC... Okay, figure 4 dollars per plate, plus labor, I could reasonably pay maybe $8 for such a dish, but I couldn't justify spending 11. It was tasty and well prepared, maybe I'm just a cheap poophead. The bartender seemed really ticked he had to work that night as well, my whiskey and soda was mostly soda. Great, 8 dollar soda. Thanks. I'll come back, the waffles were really good. -

Dropped by and got a couple of drinks with friends for Halloween Night.
The bouncer at the door was humorous in a dry way.
For the occasion a slasher film was playing on all the TVs. It creeped me out so I focused in on the only corner of the room in my peripheral that didn't have a TV. It was like roadkill. My friends kept watching it and getting freaked out.
I had my first Manny's lager here. A local beer of Seattle's. Very very very comparable to Anchor Steam. A local beer of San Francisco. I'm a fan.
The other bar goers were friendly and the dj spun some good music. In sum an all around good time. -

Favorite bar on the hill. If Linda's is packed, and Redwood is packed, then I can usually count on Captain Blacks to still be reasonably comfortable. The back patio is awesome in the summer, and drinks are always pretty cheap. You must try the food here, especially the fried mac n' cheese.

Known for both their Po' Boys and their Chicken and Waffles. Skip it I've had both done way better. Check out the Chicken and Waffles at Skillet diner. Way better there, but thats't not saying much. The enviroment is fun, the staff is friendly and the drinks are good. Great watering hole that's about it though.

Yes...the rooftop deck is indeed awesome!
Went here yesterday for happy hour and we got a fried chicken po boy, fried cheese curds and a ceasar salad.
The po boy was for my boyfriend and it looked a little dry but he said it was good. He did finish it within 5 minutes and while he was eating he probably said only a few sentences, so that means he really liked it. The po boy also came with fries, which were nicely seasoned and crispy and good.
The cheese curds were nicely fried, stringy and delicious. I've had fried cheese curds before and these were actually very very greasy, don't know what oil they fry them in but then again...it's fried cheese curds, so of course it's gonna be greasy.
The ceasar salad had too much dressing for me but I should have ordered lightly dressed so I don't blame them. It did have awesome big slices of parmesan cheese in it.
Great spot and I'm so happy I can get fried cheese curds 8 min walk from my house!! -
Review from Marc M.
The best feature about Captain Black's is the one thing that will keep me coming back here over and over and that is the rooftop deck area that features a great view of Seattle from Capitol Hill. On any type of decent Seattle day, this is a great spot to hang out with friends enjoying some good food and a few drinks while checking out the local scenery.
The inside of the bar is also a pretty fun hang out spot, especially if you want to watch a game or two as they have a few TV's showing whatever sports are on at the time. There is also a smaller deck right outside the entrance for more outside seating options, but the real party is definitely out on the main deck facing the city. There is always a good mix of people in groups, couples, or even a few solo flyers.
The happy hour here is above average with a good selection of food and drinks at decent prices. The main item on the menu they are known for is the chicken and waffles although I have to say I wasn't all that impressed when I took the opportunity to give it a try. It wasn't bad by any means, but it also wasn't anything to write home about which was a little disappointing for what is supposed to be their signature item.Listed in: Capitol Hill, UYE's

Captain Blacks (Seattle)
I am not sure if we are talking about the same Captain Blacks here, however, I saw this place in passing the last time I was in Seattle across from B&O coffee shop and was intrigued by the anchor in front of the shop. This time on our way to Devo, my best friend and the guy I am dating decided to have lunch here.
It got 4.5 overall star reviews, therefore, I feel that I must be missing something here. We didn't do the drink thing as it was well before noon and decided to have something to eat.
It was dead slow, it was just us three which was kind of nice 'cause this meant that we could sit in our pirate plush hats in ease (yes we dressed up for this place 'cause dressing up is fun).
The menu had little choice, nothing that I could eat giving my culinary restrictions, however, settled for fries which were nicely spiced. My best friend had a country fried steak with poutine. He seemed happy with it but then again, he eats anything. The guy I am dating had chicken and waffle. He seemed happy but mentioned that it was nothing stellar.
The service was meh, they weren't social and seemed like they could care less if we were there or not. I can't blame them considering that it was dead and they must have been bored.
It was small and cute and nicely decorated without being to Kitch. -
Review from Gary W.
I read the reviews on the Oyster Po-Boy and was hoping for an incredible delight that would remind me of New Orleans or back in Little Rock at the Oyster Bar. But Meh, not even close.
It took me a few minutes to figure out "Your on your own" and need to be able to take care of yourself. No table service and you go to the bar to get your drinks and make your food order. I'm not shy so that's not a big deal to me. But, if you're looking for to be serviced, you need to plan on taking your order and going to the bar to get your drinks.
Of course, I ordered the $11 oyster po-boy and it was 4 oysters on a soft Wonderbread type hoagie roll with some shredded lettuce, tomatoes and chopped pickles + some fried french fries (the frozen / deep fried type). It was basically, just work cafeteria okay.
That said, if it's a nice sunny day and you just want to drink, and drink, and drink and lounge outside on the deck. This could be a good place to hang out and after a few pitchers of beer or rum drinks the food might be pretty good.
As for ambiance, remember the movie "Animal House"? Well, if it was in Seattle and they built on a deck on back and got some lawn furniture from Home Depot ... that would be Captain Blacks. -

Love this place. Super hip, but has a great Happy Hour and an excellent selection of beer/wine/liquor. In the summer the outdoor seating is perfect to check out a gorgeous view/soak up some sun. During the other 11 months of the year it's a solid bar with solid food and great staff.
Definitely a Capitol Hill staple. -

So I knew this place had to be good, since I've seen bartenders from other trusted establishments hanging out here on their off days. What I did not know is that the back deck makes you feel like you're at a sexy house party. Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was the $2 pints of Rainier, but EVERYONE (bartenders & customers alike) activated my Perv Response™. Sorry for all the eyesex, guys.
The deck is fantastic even if you're not a lech, though. Good music choices by the bartenders and just big enough, with people filling up all the tables and standing around with their beers and their dogs and their fried cheese curds and their sunglasses and their tight jeans and their...aaaaand I'll just leave it there.Listed in: My Girl Wants To Party All The…

It's a bar! And it's fun, usually a lot going on. Nothing too special - I was there one night and some sort of game thing was going on, which was super loud and not very cool seeming, so I left, but the people involved seemed to be enjoying it a lot. I did really enjoy their jello shots on St. Patrick's Day... They also have a nice patio in the back. Bonus!

This place is pretty cool. Only been there once but I'm definately convinced it's a good spot to be at. Berr at a cheap price with chicken and waffles was great. Waffles are flavored with a hint of cinnamon and the chicken was fried just right. It was flavorful and the combo with the waffle was excellent.
The fried mac and cheese bites are a little too Kraft tasting. Yet, they're still really good. Creamy. And when dipped in the jalepeno sauce that is served with it...amazing!
Not to mention the view and ambiance on the deck. Very chill, yet social.
I'll be back very soon for sure!

The best place for drunk eats!! Captain Black's satisfies your inebriated need for fried mac & cheese and bacon waffles (that's right! Bacon IN the waffle!) Because really, the only time you should be eating those types of foods is at 1 am after a couple of pitchers.
The bar used to be a house and has a great back deck that overlooks the city. It's definitely a neighborhood spot, but is filled with nice, friendly neighborhood hipsters (not the bitchy, snotty ones). The one at the bar with the hobo beard recommended a can of Hamm's, which is now probably one of my favorite canned beers, right up there with Olympia.
The bar has a great laid-back atmosphere--a nice break from the more raucous places in Pike/Pine. -

Me : where should we go eat gina bear?
friend: let's go to captain blacks and get some chicken and waffles
Me: ugh, I am so over chicken and waffles and I want a seattle dog
friend: No, I swear it's really yummy
Me: ok, let's go!!!!
-stumbling in at late hours of the night-
two plates of chicken and waffles plus two beers :) thanks,
plates arrived, and I am not quite sure if it was the fact that I was drunk, or they were really that good. Nonetheless, it was scrumptious :) a must try, and I noticed that there was happy hour too!!! -

Love Captain Blacks - friendly enough bartenders that make good drinks, great happy hour food and prices (fried okra I loooooove you!) And the deck! best place for a sunny afternoon happy hour.
I guess that would be my only qualm - if it's sunny, you better get to that deck fast. You snooze, you loose at Captain Blacks. -

Our bartender is awesome I keep forgetting her name. She has dark hair and also works at chop suey on saturday. She's awesome, engaging and very friendly.
This place has Beecher's cheese curds, holy hell- so freaking delish.
Happy hour is GREAT.
The last time I was here there was a lot of gay guys, super cute ones! So to all my gay men, I know where the hotties are hiding!
It's actually really clean in there too. So you got cheap eats, drinks and a great bartender in a clean and not too busy place. -

There is a lot to like about this little 'hole-in-the-wall' on Capitol Hill. Located on a side street, it's easy to miss, but well worth taking the effort to find. The compact bar has a modest selection of beers on tap, but there was a well thought-out mix of microbrews & cheap beer to please all tastes.
Two areas where Captain Black's stands out from the crowd is, as Yelper Corrina K. pointed out, a great 'house party' vibe (younger hipster crowd, but not the pretentious, 'too-cool-for-you' types), and a delightful menu that features yummy 'trailer park' cuisine, especially fried chicken & waffles (!). As counterintuitive as this entrée sounds, it works, and works very well indeed!
The only potential downside is that this place may well be very crowded most of the time. I was there on a Tuesday evening, and it was pretty full. I can't imagine what it could be like on a nice Friday or Saturday evening!
But don't let this discourage you; you really should go, if for no other reason, to try the chicken & waffles for yourself. -
Review from Paul B.
I've always walked past this dark cottage in the alley and thought to myself, what the hell types of ritualistic sacrifices are goin' on in there?! Far from my imagination, this place is actually pretty hipster infested when you walk inside. Your expectations are even further shattered when you see all of em' eating chicken and waffles. Hahaha. Wait there's more: this place is sailor themed.
So confusing haha.
Either way, the place isn't big. The service is good enough. And it was an overall quite average place. Don't come here in the late hours after cap hill roaming and expect chicken and waffles to soothe your appetite. Kitchen closes at 12am... -
Review from Clover A.
My 2nd time back and it was delightful.
The clientele is a bit 'off my beaten path' but everyone seems friendly enough and we were able- through my powers of persuasion and aggressively sweet requests- to snag a table on the deck at 9pm on a weekend night.
SCORE!
My drink was good, the prices were great and overall, I like it here. The bathrooms, as other reviewers mention, are clean and well appointed, the staff is friendly and there's little to no hassles with any method of payment and/or special requests.
We had just eaten this time so it was liquor only for me, but I ate last time after the Mustache Bash, and if I remember correctly, the cheese curds, were yum-yum. I will be trying the chicken and waffles very soon now that I'm a total convert. -
