Review from Jessica O.
Vancouver, BC
My family has been frequenting this small, homey Szechuan place since I was a kid, and it makes me feel like I am at home as a result. I have watched a generation of this family grow up while they watched me do the same - this is a real family affair!
There is NOTHING fancy about Capitol Hill - it is devoid of interior decorating of any kind and the food is simple. But I kind of think that the genius is in the simplicity, as the food arrives to the table hot and fresh and spicy, and you really stop caring about ambience.
Now, if you go all "sweet and sour pork/chicken chow mein" here you do get some pretty average takeaway Chinese fare. The real winners are the truly Szechuan items like the spicy green beans and spicy tofu. When I was a carnivore, the garlic pork and ginger beef were favourites as well.
But if there is truly an item on this menu that seems hellbent on breaking my no mammal/bird rule, it is the wonton soup. Simply the best I have ever eaten, rich with pork and shrimp in a sesame oil infused broth, studded with broccoli. I miss it so! This hearty soup (with lots of extra added chilis and chili oil) has nursed my mum and I through many a cold and break-up.
They do deliver, but I have never lived close enough to take advantage of this. Instead you will find me here on cold Winter evenings after decending the hill from school, slurping hot and sour soup and chopsticking rice and noodles as I study.
Oh - and it's cheap! :) -
Review from Reena M.
Went there this evening, and everything is still tasty! And they gave us oranges at the end to cleanse our palate. Ordered same as usual: Veggie lettuce wrap, spicy garlic chicken wings, honey garlic spare ribs, vegetarian spring rolls, honey bbq pork (with real honey), chicken chow mein and curry chicken with rice.
