Saw Spring Awakening at the Canon today, for the second time.

Last week, my mother and my sisters took me to see this play for my birthday (for most families, going with your mom to a play where masturbation-set-to-song, we-try-our-best-abortions, gay make-out sessions and on-stage sex scenes; nipples, asses and all, written in 1800's Germany, set to modern-day rock, would cause some discomfort, but for my family, it makes for an entertaining sunday birthday gift). I LOVED it. I've seen so many plays, and this musical was so different and the cast was so talented, I decided my musical, creative, ambitious boyfriend would appreciate it as well.

Okay, so not so much. I'm sure he'll review all on his own, but in short, he didn't see the connection. Perhaps being raised in a very conservative, religious environment, I got it a little more, but, overall, ignoring the juxtaposition between 1800s Germany and 2000s modernism, I may never sing again for fear of hearing their voices in my head and feeling so ridiculously inferior. goosebumps.

Blondy gay dude made the play, and his lovers' voice shut me up for the rest of the play. Incredibly talented cast.

    Different + talented = amazing.

Squeezed between stag shop and a Hard Rock cafe, you wouldn't know how elegant it looks inside. This theatre is famous for Wicked and Billy Elliot, and some small limited run performances. I had pleasant experiences there each time I've attended a show. Seats are comfortable with generous width. The space to stretch legs is decent at best. But there isn't enough slant on the floor to eliminate blocked view caused by a tall person sitting in front of you.

Barbarian, a restaurant on Elm street, offers after-theater menus.

Beautiful theater with lovely architecture. Was here to see Billy Elliot which I thoroughly enjoyed.

We were on the Mezzanine level and the biggest irritant was the angle at which the seats were laid out. I am a pretty tall guy and had a hard time looking over the head of this guy in front of me who was average sized. Ended up doing a dance and needing to move every time he moved which was annoyingly very often.

The Canon surprised me with how good it looked!! For something that I see all the time and looks like nothing special from outside, the new interior certainly packs a punch!!

The staff and ushers were very friendly, I won the lottery to see Wicked, so we ended up on the first box to the right of the stage, so while the view of the production was not as great as it could have been, a the 4 seat box provided so much room for legs that it was hard to feel grumpy about our view. Despite our partly obstructed view the experience was still fantastic and we didn't miss out on any significant parts of the show.

It misses out on 1 star because while the big and beautiful lobby area is very nice to look at, it gets extremely crowded during intermission and can get complicated to navigate through.

To be honest, I don't see any major Toronto theatre being below 3 stars and the Canon does not disappoint!

The Canon Theatre is a venue that really speaks volumes when it comes to the history of Toronto.

Built back in the 1920s, this theatre may have switched names and ownership over the years, but it still remains a very popular venue for some of the biggest shows in musical theatre and is definitely one of the most beautiful theatres with a stunning interior.

My first experience with this theatre was back when I was 6 years old, when the theatre was "The Pantages" and my parents took my two siblings and I to see The Phantom of the Opera.

Since the Phantom ended its ten year reign in this theatre, the theatre became "The Canon" and was restored again to maintain its original beauty.

Just last week, I went to see Fiddler on the Roof there and it was a wonderful production. What made it so wonderful was the great acoustics inside the theatre, the comfortable seating and the fact that there were no pillars blocking my view!

Before the show even started, I was mesmerized by the opulent decorations of the stage and the interior, along with a very detailed painting design on the ceiling.

Like any other theatre, the only downfall was the lack of bathrooms, particularly for the ladies.

Overall, this theatre is wonderful. Also, it is right across from the Eaton Centre and Dundas Square, so you are close to restaurants and shopping to keep you busy before and after your performance.

The Canon Theatre is great for plays and musicals. Most recently I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Spring Awakening there. I always look for affordable seats, considering I always take 'opera' appropriate binoculars with me, that way I can see more shows on the cheap. The best way to get tickets to a show is to phone Mirvish Productions directly. The seats I enjoy and are affordable are only available by phone. They are the single seats all they way at the back of the theatre, almost like bar stools. The other are the box seats which are great. The theatre considers them 'obstructed view' due to a row of speakers that are near you,  but they only obscure about 1/10 of the stage, and thus are cheap, affordable, and give a great view (not to mention extra leg room, and your own box!)

The theatre has the old world charm, lovely plush seats, great ceiling and common area details. A great theatre to see shows in.

Are you looking for bas-relief, ormulu, greek columns, amazing appliques, great plaster work, stunning ornate chandeliers, decorated balcons and a whiff of what movie theatres and theatres used to be like? Then this is the place for you.

I just saw Riverdance there last night, and what a setting. The seats are relatively comfortable and there are very few bad seats.

The only sour note was that they were hawking popcorn and ice cream in the venue during intermission. I think the people at Mirvish should examine the marginal contribution of these paltry sales. Better yet add higher end items were the concessions are sold and achieve the same return.

Just great eye candy for all to enjoy!

What a beautiful theatre.  Even the ceiling is completely decorated.  It is also huge in comparison to some of the other theatres in town.  I sat in the balcony, near the back (cheapest seats!) and I had no problem seeing or hearing anything.  I even noticed that there were bathrooms right off the seating area in the balcony (how convenient).  However, the biggest problem was the common area was too small to accommodate everyone at intermission.  We were literally squished in like sardines.  They also only had a small stand selling souvenirs, not like the larger 'store' that they have at most places. They have a coat check and even check parcels for free, which was convenient as the theatre is located right across the street from the Eaton Centre.  The only thing I found odd is the whole 'lottery' ticket system that they use for 25 tickets for each show.  Show up at a certain time, get a wrist band, and if your name is pulled you can buy up to two tickets, cash only, for that days performance for a cheap price.  Bizarre....especially since I was trying to buy tickets for a show that I was told was 'sold out'....but not really.....
