Review from Jennifer P.
Edmonton, AB
I once had the most incredible experience meeting with an intervener and client through The Canadian National Institute for the Blind in Edmonton. It helped me not only to gain insight into the life of deaf-blind people, but I learned about a profession I had no idea existed and hold the utmost respect for the people who choose to train in this area. I spent an afternoon with Rita, a deaf-blind woman in Edmonton, and her intervener, Marie, who helps her live independently in a silent, black world, despite her disability.
It was absolutely incredible to see them interact. Marie, who was trained by CNIB after studying to be an interpreter, is Rita's eyes and ears. She gives Rita her undivided attention, but not her opinions, so that Rita has the information she needs to make her own choices and stay connected to the world. Marie's like Helen Keller's teacher, and Rita, Helen Keller. Before the dynamic duo raised the profile of this double disability, people with it suffered in silent darkness. There interveners like Marie, they find their voice and the light of life again, and amazing organizations like the CNIB make all of this possible. Women like Marie have got good karma for the next 1,000 lifetimes and should be honored for their work. If you're looking for an organization to work or volunteer for and help make positive changes in the world, the CNIB is one of them.
