So, I've been chicken to donate blood for as long as I can remember, but as a goal for 2012, I wanted to face my fear and do something good.
I had a complete blast donating blood this past weekend at the Bayers Road location! The staff are amazing and extremely helpful, and the feeling of doing something good totally outweighs any fear I previously might have had. And, I took along some willing friends, so we kind of made a party out of it, to the amusement of the staff!
When you arrive they will do a finger prick to check your iron levels and ensure you're good to donate. After some questionnaires with a qualified nurse, you're off to donate and while you sit back in the comfy chaise lounge (that's what they most closely resemble, I guess), you can watch TV, chat with the staff and "race" your friends with the speed of your donation. In all, you'll probably spend about an hour at the clinic, but the time to actually donate is about 10 - 15 minutes.
I asked a lot of questions while I was there, and I learned that every blood donation can save up to 3 lives, so WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? In total you donate about 0.5L with one donation and can give blood every 56 days. And, it should be noted that you can either walk-in, or pre-book a time online. Once you've donated once, you'll receive a donor card that will have you in system and make check-in speedy.
And, you'll get free cookies, chocolate milk, and the knowing feeling that you've done good. I'll be heading back again as soon as my 56 days are up!Listed in: It's a Party!

I actually like donating at this clinic, after years of donating on Gottingen Street. The CBS clinic in the Bayers Road Shopping Centre is very clean, modern and comfortable. Also, the people who work there are well qualified and take good care of you.
The first time I went to this new location at Bayers Road, I had a hard time finding it in the mall. But now I know exactly where to go. It is located near the Treats and Mindful Mango Cafe in the middle of the mall. Past Fabricville and before Zanzibar. If you come at opening hour, I think it is 11 AM, you will be served quickly, with minimum waiting.
You can use either your blood donor card, or your drivers licence as identification. Also, drinking water beforehand helps you give a fast donation ) At the end they gave me a little container of fruit cup which I appreciated. As I am not a frequent cookie eater, I find it hard to eat a bunch of cookies, i.e. sugar! after donating, so the fruit was a more balanced approach to renewing my energy cells.
I try to go every 56 days, which is the minimum. Giving blood is helpful to people who are ill, and you are well taken care of at the Bayers Road blood clinic. -

How has anyone not rated donating blood yet! It's a free way to spend an hour to do a great cause, and they give you unlimited cookies for doing so!
To note, though, it's now at the Village at Bayers Road, not Gottingen Street.
