Woo, Calgary Farmers Market! You helped me earn a Domestic Badge :). How awesome is it that Sarah Louise and I can come here and try out so many things? Vegan Empanadas! Vegan Curry! Flavored Nuts! Dippy Dips! Fresh fruit samples everywhere I turn!
Man, am I glad that we came here after a vegan buffet, or I would've eaten the entire market and there would be nothing left. Nothing but dust and hydrangeas. I heart you, CFM. If there was a real beach here, I'd write your name in the sand.Listed in: F, F, D, HK, Delightful WPF, Calgary 1Ups

I have to give this place a five!! It's fun and lots of good eats to behold!!!!!
I love coming here for lunch on a Friday, the place is bursting at the seems with lively people and the smell of love in the air. It's just a fun place to mosey around, taste lots of food, buy some boutique meats, get good coffee, eat fabulous dumplings.... I could go on! I like it here.
The new location is quite nice, perhaps a little more generic than the previous but it's still cool like stools.... Yes the kind of stools you sit on.

Between their move and my travel schedule I haven't been to the Farmer's Market for quite some time and this is my first trip to their new location.
I'll admit that I had high expectations given all the hype and excitement their management attempted to create around the move and grand opening. Unfortunately those expectations were for the most part dashed.
I've trying to be as objective as possible when making the comparison between old and new but I can only come up with one positive thought on their new digs. They're cleaner and (obviously) don't show the wear and tear from the old site. But thats where it ends for me. Many of my favorite vendors are no longer there (Sourdough Bakery and Hoven Farms to name two); the parking is abysmal.
My impression is that its a newer, cleaner, slightly better organized version of the Blackfoot Market (which I find to be a rat trap) and is bordering on a flea vs. farmer's market with all the crafts and chotchkies. -

Holy negativity, Batman!
I am surprised by how many "dissapointed" reviews there are on here from patrons of the former Farmers Market.
I really don't get the "mall" comparisons.
From the first time I walked in, I only saw the new location as an improvement; a cleaner space with more lighting and an increased amount of interesting vendors.
Granted, I miss the old location. I spent many, many, MANY Friday afternoons in that old spot, just having a late lunch, picking up some veggies or taking in a free bbq during stampede time.
It is one of the first places I really felt "familiar" with when first arriving in Calgary, and over the years it offered a great deal of comfort (particularly when I was unemployed!), like meeting an old friend regularly for coffee.
But we cannot simply hold on to "what was" forever. We have to accept and embrace "what is!" It still feels like the place I knew and loved so well, only with a new makeover and a few improvements! -

This isn't a Farmer's Market, it's a shopping mall. It's a gourmet food shopping mall with overpriced fruit and vegetables. It took everything I disliked about the old location, stripped it of any redeeming qualities the old location did have (like the old location) and created a bland, hard to get to, disappointing waste of an afternoon. Sorry to be so harsh, but it's honest to god like a group of people sat around a board room and thought "How can we bring the Farmer's Market experience to people who don't like ACTUAL Farmer's Markets"?.
Crossroads, Better.
Kingsland, Better.
Fruit stand on the side of the highway. Better.
I made my first and final visit to the new location last weekend and can't wait to not visit again! -

Now that the Calgary Farmers' Market has moved to its new location, it is starting to develop a cool atmosphere and vibe. Now located on Blackfoot Trail, the Market has less of an old, boring market from the '60s military hangar feel, and now it is a great place for lunch or to do some shopping.
Although it is only open Thursday-Sunday, this is a great place to grab a bite on the weekend or during your lunch hour. All sorts of amazing sandwiches, pies, salads are available along with fantastic coffee places and a whole lot of dessert options.
Of course there is the grocery side of things, with farmers selling fresh produce, meats, cheeses and so much more.
There are some crafts and homemade goods available, which gives the market even more variety, but the real reason to go is for the food. With plenty of places to sit and eat, this is actually a really good place for a relaxed date.
I don't think they advertise nearly enough because a lot of people don't know about it. These people are missing out. -

I'm not an experienced flea market explorer by any means. Typically it's a cool little place for me to take the kids on the weekend. The Calgary Farmers Market has a vast selection of fresh fruit and a ton of little food stands. Parking is never an issue even though it's almost always busy. The only thing keeping this place from a 5 star is how expensive it is.

With the move, it seems to be more of a glorified mall & food court than a farmer's market now.
I guess in Calgary's mall culture a market with real farmers would confuse the crowds because despite the lack of variety and lack of authenticity, the place is always packed.
It is nearly impossible to get to via transit, and if you drive, there is nowhere to park.
I can't see the draw at all. I rather go to the Crossroads market. -

Checked out the new market last weekend, and it's pretty wonderful! Row after row of food vendor, both ready to serve and stuff to cook later. The biggest problem was deciding what to eat first!
I did notice there seemed to be fewer non-food vendors than in the previous location, but I think the abundance of food makes up for that.
It was pretty chaotic opening weekend, but they had parking attendants out and everything seemed under control - and I'm sure the chaos will die down after a couple weeks.
The Market is a favourite of many when the weather's gorgeous, but I'd even recommend checking it out on a stormy day - it's all enclosed, and I bet you'd have to fight fewer crowds! -

Whenever I get sick of hearing people brag about how great working downtown is, which is ALL OF THE TIME, I don't hesitate in mentioning that I work right near two of Calgary's Farmer's market.
This relatively new Farmer's Market has been a great place for lunch hour treks, as well as weekend forays for fresh ingredients and unique fares. The Food here is a little expensive, one gentleman working in the food area even noted this as he talked me out of dropping serious dough for his pasta salad for a work potluck, "it's the farmer's market, it's supposed to be expensive. No complaints, one certainly deserves a treat once in a while.
The parking is a bit tricky here, on weekends can drive you a little insane but on weekdays it's pretty good. The drive here stinks thought because you have to make the weirdest of turns from heritage drive and it can be easy to miss.
Still quite a bit of areas left to explore and mark. -

I figured the new location would get mixed reviews. Hey, I miss the old Market, too but Calgary is all about change and moving forward.. though not always in a good way.
The good: if you drive it's less confusing to find and it's paved parking.
The bad: if you rely on transit be prepared for a walk.
The new market has wider aisles to accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. Lots of free samples. Live music. Kid's play area.
If I could make one improvement: more privacy in the men's restroom,
My favorite eats:
Simple Simon Pies
Big D's Smokehouse
Le Peitie Mousse Crepes & Sandwiches
Sweet Spot Donut Shop (make your own custom donut!) -

This is a great farmers market, and as we live in Deer Run we're here every week. It has it's growing pains, and it's crowded at certain times, but overall there is a TON of produce, and some great deals. Last weekend I got ORGANIC spartan apples from BC for 88 cents a pound!!! It doesn't get better or cheaper than that people. Here's a news flash, we live in the desolate north pole, tropical fruit doesn't grow here, so of course most of the produce is not LOCAL, we can't grow apples or peaches either but there is some kick ass carrots from Beck's farms at the Innisfail Growers booth...I dare you to find a juicier tastier carrot to eat raw...
How many of you have actually taken the time to TALK to the growers? They're at the market every day, and I have learned some incredible things, such as the BC grower who uses olive oil diluted with water to spray his strawberry plants in lieu of 'organic' chemicals sprayed on the 'organic' strawberries...Organic is not always worth the money, and is not always better. Get to know the growers. And seriously don't expect to find the crappy produce available at superstore at rock bottom prices here. I have bought mushrooms, same price as superstore, so you really need to use your brain and shop wisely. I can say categorically that the quality of the produce is miles higher than the crap at big grocery stores.
If you've been going lately you will have seen the two Hutterite booths selling their great potatoes, onions, garlic (oh the amazing garlic...) last week I even found beets with TOPS at the Cherry Pit. If you've never eaten beet tops you're missing out on the best tasting, most tender green ever created.
Give this market a chance to get their crap together, and work out the wrinkles. The food court is amazing, the crepe place, Main Dish, the curry place in the corner..OMG have you had the naan bread? The mexican place Los chillitos has unreal home made nachos.
But the 88 cents per pound organic spartan apples were the best deal yet... The more demand for small growers, the lower the price will get and better quality...keep shopping at superstore if all you care about is saving a few pennies per pound. My dad said he hasn't had a REAL Mac apple in decades, but there was some at this market...they don't look like the nasty plastic looking BC mac apples in the bags at superstore either.
Good job Calgary Farmers Market!! I've stopped shopping at grocery stores completely, I estimate I spend around $70/week on produce from the Calgary Farmers Market. The amount of nutrition per dollar is totally worth it in my opinion. Oh yeah the $4.75/doz eggs from Sylvan Star are a must too...what a great price for incredible eggs. -

Well, I am disappointed. The atmosphere is not the same as the former location, which I was excited about every time I pulled into the parking lot. I wasn't excited to be here at all and I walked through in probably 10 minutes, snagging a few samples along the way. It's mostly food and few artisans. I won't be going out of my way to stop by. I prefer more of a small town feel rather than something so commercialized and for this reason alone, I'll go to other markets in Calgary.

I really think Mark Burnett really missed his chance with a great reality show about Calgary's infamous Farmers Market. Who knew farmers could also produce drama? It seems like this market is in the papers every other week. Whether they are fighting with their vendors, fending off protesters or fighting with the media themselves.
Besides Speidi-sized fights, this market does have some great choices. Simple Simon Pies and Phil & Sebastians immediately come to mind. But the best thing about a farmers market is that everyone can have their very own favourites.
Avoid going there for breakfast, it can end up being really expensive especially when you consider its location. Plus the fruits and veggies aren't as cheap as you might think. Sometimes I think vendors are taking advantage of the "farmers market" price association.
Sadly, this location will be closing in December and opening in a new location next Spring. Vendors are also using this opportunity to get our of their contracts and new markets are opening all over the city. More markets, more choices, what's wrong with that?Listed in: The parents are coming, the…

Whenever I'm in Calgary, the Calgary Farmer's Market is an absolute MUST. I spend a very big chunk of my money here, they have the juiciest, most delicious organic carrots and great organic blueberries.
Some of my other favorite vendors:
1) Simple Simon's Pies: best pies I have ever had.
2) Yum Bakery: Yum-worthy Macaroons!
3) Buzz: Love their honey sticks, they come in tons of delicious flavors.
4) Going Nuts: I've been going nuts because I can't find these things anywhere in Toronto!! Raspberry Almonds and orange pecans, how I miss thee, might actually have to order some online.
5) The Stock & Sauce: the owner is a super friendly guy, and unlike other places that discourage you from seconds when you go to try their samples, he encourages you to pile it on, and try all of them! My cousin and I buy a whole bunch of their dips every time we go. Artichocke Parmesan, Olive Tapanade, Chocolate and Cinnamon Mousse are just some of my favorites, I just can't remember all the names. -

As one who relies on public transportation, the new location is a huge disappointment. It is literally in the middle of nowhere. At the old location it was a quick shuttle bus downtown or to the C Train on the number 20 bus. It took minutes and the stop was almost at the door. No so anymore. Even the bus stop is a trek. It is about 3/4 of a mile from the stop to the market.
The new location takes close to one hour from downtown and one and a half hours from the near North West. That is three hour return trip. One visit and that is all for me, regardless of the wonderful vendors who have worked hard to present their wares to Calgary and its visitors. Simply put, it is far far too inconvenient.
I used to see many seniors at the Currie Barracks location who had arrived by way of Calgary Transit. Few familiar and regular faces graced the new location. For a senior, it will now be an expedition rather than an easy jump on the bus. -

Calgary Farmers Market is located in the corner, south of Blackfoot in the SE. There is a ton of parking, as well as addtional parking in the rear.
Spence and I use to go to the Calgary Farmers market located right near Mount Royal, but since it moved we haven't been to any farmers markets until this month. I heard about the M for Macaron in the Kingsland market so we went there one weekend. Great Macarons btw (see review). They didn't have Simple Simon Pies at the Kingsland location so I posted a thread, and found out the pies were at the Crossroads market so we went there another weekend.
This weekend, we decided to hit the farmers markets for macarons and pies. Since they were at two different locations that we knew of and we were already in the SE, so we were thinking of working our route, farthest market first (Crossroads market) then on our way back come around to the Kingsland market. While on our way to the Crossroads and Kingsland markets we were passing blackfoot, and I was just being aware of my surrounds and notice "CALGARY FARMERS MARKET" as we drove by. I said to Spence, "Hey, Calgary Famers Market!" And as he was driving he looked but didn't see the sign I saw.... BUT THEN! he saw a smokin' 458 Ferrari parked near the market and asked if I wanted to check out the 'market'.
Luckily there was a close turn off to the market or else we'd have to make a detour around to get there. We just parked in the first spot we saw with a little walking distance to the market. When I first walked in the market, there were a ton of people...but not SO MUCH that it was too crowded. The first think I noticed was "YUM BAKERY"...YUM Indeed. They're display is cute and fresh, and I saw MACARONS! :) I got 6: vanilla cappucino, peppermint, two salted caramel, raspberry and pistacio. (Review coming soon!). Then we walked around to see what was offered. It was seriously not a culture shock, but a FOOD SHOCK. There was just different foods EVERYWHERE. I really didn't know where to start. I saw bubble tea, donuts, cupcakes, pies, macarons, cakes, fruits, vegetables, meats, dim sum, candy....AHHH.
Everything Spence and I wanted is there!!! Macarons + Pies!! :) So it was a one stop deal for us! We didn't have to go to the other markets!! First we went to get some food to eat, we went to the chinese place beside the Calgarys donuts to get some dim sum and then we went to the donut place to get some donuts for Spence. "I didn't get these at the Stampede this year! :( Sweet! I can get them now!! :)" The Calgary donuts have such a cute display, with mini donuts as well as regular donuts, funnel cake and churros! We got a bag for $5, which was a HUGE tin foil bag filled with fresh hot donuts over filling. It was simply a great heartattack in a bag. We then walked to get something to drink and decided to go to the Vietmese place beside Buttercream bake shoppe to get some strawberry mango bubble tea. I do not recommend the bubble tea! Small portion, doesn't seem fresh and it was ~$6! THEN we went to buttercream to get some cupcakes. We got red velvet and chocolate. (Review coming soon!) After all that, we got some pies at Simple Simons Pies (4 raspberry, 1 blueberry and 1 pumpking @ $11 or $2 each). Lastly, to make us feel a bit better, we picked up some cheese and fresh green peppers. :)
The Calgary Farmers Market is great! Depending on the vendor you visit, the prices vary. Some vendors can be a bit too pricey, and some can be just right. In my humble opinion, Calgary Farmers Market is a great place to stop by over the weekend, just to browse around, pick up some fresh produce/desserts or even just have a seat and visit with your friends!
I will be back again! :) -

I've been to the Calgary Farmer's Market a few times, but I've yet to be blown away by it. They have a good selection of pies and other home made-like things, but nothing phenomenal that makes me want to go back every weekend or every second or even third weekend....
In fact, I haven't been there for a long time. It gets crowded and I just don't find it worth the time and patience it takes. And the meat pies are not worth the price. Who eats meat pies, anyway?
I've experienced better farmer's markets in other areas of the province. If you require real farmer's markets, go for a drive outside the city.... -

I wished I could rate this market with five-stars because then it would mean that I could go here every weekend to get my grocery shopping done. But the reality is that I hardly ever go here and even if I do, I find myself walking out with a small bag of locally grown mini-carrots (that is, if I'm lucky as the situation gets worse during winter).
What puzzles me the most every time I visit the market is, why is there so little produce from the local/Canadian vendors? Okay, I'll let the avocados and some of the tropical fruits off the hook but what about the rest? To make things worse, everything is over-priced here.
Paying almost $5 for a small bag of carrots and $4.50 for a loaf of bread makes me wonder if it is really worth it.
You can find plenty of organic products from your community organic stores and sometimes even the same fruits and veggies from the big name stores for cheaper... sigh -

While I don't always buy a ton of stuff when I go to the Calgary Farmer's Market, I always leave with a little something and some revitalized energy. The Farmer's Market has such great vibes and is always packed with great people and families. Live music outside when it is nice out, chestnuts roasting on a fire pit, kettle corn, fresh produce, and more.
Its the perfect way to spend your Saturday or Sunday perusing the stalls with a Phil & Sebastian coffee and enjoying the company of your friends and family. -

Great place to get decent prices on fresh produce, mainly. I like that it's a permanent fixture, but then they dont' get the traveling farmers who go to the little towns.
DON'T go in the morning on a Saturday. It closes at 5pm, so I recommend going in the last hour. The produce will still be good, and you won't have to fight through so many people to get to it. -

This farmer's market is situated off Crowchild Trail, close to Glenmore Trail S.W.
It has alot to offer, but I often get the feeling that it is a bit over priced. The majority of the locals that shop here seem like the least likely person to stop at a u-pick for fresh saskatoonberries or strawberries, if you get my drift. so, it's like a 'farmer's market', but not.
All of the stalls are very coiffed and slick, there's nothing earthy or grassroots about this farmer's market, which is a shame, as if this place looks so great you know that you're helping to pay for it through the higher prices produce that is offered each Friday through Sunday.
There's lots of produce, organic meat & dairy, baking, gift items, and usually some entertainment. I do love the variety of food booths that are offered, thought, makes for a nice selection for a late lunch with a few friends.
Beware, this place can get frantically crazy about mid-day. My advice - go early or go late, do a walkabout and compare prices before you buy anything and take some cloth bags for your purchases. -
Review from Emma G.
I really like the atmosphere here, and there are tons of quality products/shops. Phil and Sebastian coffee is AMAZING, it tastes nothing like any latte I've had before or since. I like Simple Simon's Pies, and now there's a little Macaron stand that is amazing.
That said, the produce is usually only sort of local (from BC, etc) and is overpriced. I love the idea of a farmer's market, but the produce (while usually higher quality) is often more expensive than Safeway's, so I guess it's out of my budget.
Still, it's a fun place to walk around and enjoy samples, especially if you go early or late. -

Nearly the same as the old currie barracks one. Terrible parking and no public transport that I could find. More expensive, but it has a good food court selection. Not my favorite farmers market in Calgary. I think it comes in third.

I love the feeling that the Calgary Farmer's Market elicits in me, but I everytime I visit I can't help but compare it to those in other cities. It's no match for Montreal's Jean Talon Market, that's for sure. I wish there were more local farmer's who could afford the high rents so we could get an even more diverse selection of fresh fruits and veggies to pick from and locally produced items. It has a great layout though.
In the winter, the produce is sourced from further away, but are very open about telling you where something came from. In the summer, there are lots of fruits from the okanagan, and corn and potatoes and carrots grown locally. Because they are so so fresh, they seriously taste delicious. Most of the produce is pretty highly priced, which I believe is an unfortunate result of those rents.
There are a ton of other things in the farmer's market though. The... "food court" has a ton of different stalls, with stuff from sushi and bubble tea to chinese to south american fare, and of course: Simple Simon Pies. The market is also home to Phil and Sebastian's and a ton of adorable little arts and craft stalls.
It's only open from Friday - Sunday, and is really far away, so a visit means that I need to plan my day around it. In the summer, I prefer to stop off at the sellers along the sides of the road, or head out to one of the towns around Calgary to score some sweet fresh produce (and it only takes a little longer). It's a great idea with alright execution. -

The Calgary Farmers Market is an upscale year round occupant of the Currie Barracks in the southwest.
The vast warehouse space is filled with the wares of local farmers, meat producers, craftsmen and artisans, food vendors and buskers, all housed in quaint wooden stalls. Because it's local, you're getting your produce at its peak, so the quality and flavours are far superior to that of the "ho-hum" they sell at the grocery store.
It's always busy whenever I'm there on the weekends, so I've learned to take the first spot I see in the enormous gravel parking lot and hoof it.
It's a great place for young and old alike. Most vendors serve up tons of samples to tempt you with their goods. If you still have some room after all that eating, the Market has a diverse food court serving up a variety of tasty creations made by locals - Indian, Greek, Chinese, - you name it.
I try and get down here a couple times a month to pick up produce, and you should too. But do it quick before it moves from the current location to somewhere deep in the southeast. -

Like other reviewers, I agree that this is a swell place to exercise your legs and get out of the house on a weekend. My gal and I do most of our shopping here, but we try to stick to the stalls represented by the producers directly, rather than importers. Spragg's bacon is the best (and a fair price too!), Hoven Farms is a very friendly destination for all things Beef, and Jammin' It has homemade horseradish and mustard that I would stab someone to get to.

I found the new market a huge disappointment. I walked around and almost felt like it was just a massive food court with a few splatterings of the old vendors. I was extremely disappointed to not see Sunwork Farms there and when I went to Hoven Farms to buy chicken I was told that due to "politics' they weren't allowed to sell it. Huh? After continuing on I realized that quite a few places weren't even selling local or organic veggies and fruit. I do understand our disgraceful growing season and that you can't base a farmers market on potatoes and root vegetables alone but I would at least expect vendors to have to support sustainable growing practices if they weren't selling local. At the end of the day I ended up going back to the Kingsland Market which I love!

Went to the new market this weekend for the first time. Enjoyed seeing many of my favourite establishments that were at the Currie barracks location. Excellent quality and selection of goods. The one negative which may keep people from going back is traffic in and around the market as well as parking. Thought I was leaving a Flames game which can put a damper on this shopping experience.

Some of my best late Sunday mornings are spent at the Farmer's Market. Today I visited and loaded my canvas bags with loads of things: kale, red cabbage, red peppers, macintosh apples, hummus, sourdough bread, basil, parsley, zucchini, eggplant. What really impressed me was that even come November, there is such a large selection of organic and local produce. Yay for not resorting to imports that taste like cardboard from Safeway! All of my finds were from various vendors, all very friendly. There is this really positive energy I find at the farmers market that I do not find anywhere else in this city.
There is something really awesome about being able to go into a giant market alone, pick up a Mexican Spiced Cocoa with soy milk, and galavant about, listening to Bluegrass buskers and conversing with local vendors. I always leave feeling very positively after the farmers market. I hope that the new location they move to in February is just as lovely and cozy feeling. It always feels like autumn in there.
The only thing I have to complain about is moronic yuppies who get in the way. Particularily bored housewives who bring their children in strollers, and stand right behind my car talking to another bored housewife who is in their care while I am trying to pull out of the parking lot. If any of you reading this are like this, I hope you are offended, because this left me in a very awkward predicament. Go create suburban sprawl in the far off quadrants of the city where you belong.
I love you sometimes Calgary, regardless. -

The traffic is bad on the weekends and the parking is extensive so be prepared to walk.
A great selection of locally grown produce along with meats, fish, honey, baked goods and sorbets.
I've been to farmers markets all over the US, Canada and Europe. This one has a good selection and about average prices. -

I went to the new market Sunday May 1, 2011. It was very busy but most people were there because of the food. Several important venders have not returned so I was disappointed to find a number of my old favourites are gone. If this market does not attract more fresh fruit and vegetable stall and some of the farmers who provided free ranch chichens, organic beef, lamb and pork, it is doomed to be just a food court.
