I was going through a "My body is my temple" phase a few years back, and decided to investigate meditation and buddhism. It was a very "Stuff White People Like" moment in my life. My explorations found the Calgary Buddhist Temple, which was in english and close to home. Perfect.

They offer Services, Introductions to buddhism and buddhist practices, meditation classes, a dharma school for children and a variety of community initiatives. All in all, a pretty admirable place. And for those wondering, they are authentically buddhist and very serious about it, though I did spot a few fellow trendsters hanging around.

I started with the meditation classes, which were very relaxing but also very painful. Sitting completely still for half an hour is very difficult for me, and my legs went numb after about 15. Nothing like a "I can't feel my legs!" panic to break you out of deep introspection. The meditations themselves were wonderful, starting with a chant, and then people sit on the provided meditation cushions and chairs and, uh, meditate. I had difficulty clearing my mind too, but it is fun to try to be at peace. I really enjoyed the thoughts and ideas presented, and the meditations were meant for people of all religions which was nice too. They were taught by a Religious Studies Professor from the University of Calgary.

In the end I learned a lot about buddhism, though I am not a dedicated practicer. I'm glad that there is such an accessible resource available in Calgary, that can correct assumptions and teach people something new. The temple contributes to the diversity of my community. Excellent.
