The cupcake gods must have found favor on me, because this shop is an easy breezy walk down the street from our home.

We have been huge fans of Tiny Cakes downtown, but I'm always happy to support different local businesses, especially when it's a cupcake shop!

I'll start with the minus: On my second visit, I tried their red velvet cupcake and OH BOY was it a bust.  I was so disappointed, being that red velvet is my favourite cupcake. Their cheesecake icing though, was exactly how I love my red velvet icing - light and not too heavy. I would prefer their cheesecake icing over Tiny Cakes'.  But even with great icing there is no cake to enjoy it with. The cake didn't have that nice red colour you see in most red velvets AND I found little tiny balls of cocoa powder that were not fully incorporated into the cake. That's what sifters are for.

Another thing is their buttercreams seem to all have a buttery almond aftertaste.  It didn't matter if it was chocolate icing or what the girl had told me was a plain vanilla icing, they all had that same almond taste. I don't know? Did they get their butter creams all mixed up? I will check again on the next visit if this is still the case.

The plus: the cupcake flavours they make are pretty unique to what you'd normally find in other cupcake shops. They have a piña colada cupcake which was one of the yummiest coconut cupcakes I've had. The strawberry daquiri I also enjoyed. They also have this crazy cupcake called the kitchen sink which is pretty much a fully loaded chocolate cupcake with a whole bunch of toppings. They still have the standard fare of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes for the kiddos who like it simple.

Will I go back? Yes because I really did like some of their unique cupcakes and after all it is just down the street. I'll even go back and try their red velvet one more time and cross my fingers that they get it right. Who knows, maybe someone made an oopsy in the kitchen.

I will add that the owner is really warm and friendly.
